Bill would protect immigrant children from President-elect Donald Trump's stated plan for mass deportationsTorrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, introduced Assembly Bill 49, a bill that would protect immigrant children from actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers who enter school sites or child care facilities. The bill would prohibit school or child care employees from allowing ICE officers to enter a school site or child care facility for any purpose without providing valid identification, a written statement of purpose, a valid judicial warrant, and approval from the school district's superintendent or director of the child care center. The bill also would require that if an ICE official meets the requirements to enter a school site or child care facility, their access would be restricted to school or child care facilities where students or children are not present."All children have a constitutional right to attend public schools, regardless of immigration status," stated Assemblymember Muratsuchi. "Unfortunately, the threat of federal immigration officials coming onto school grounds to detain undocumented students or family members casts a shadow of fear over all California students. Students cannot learn if they are living in fear of being deported or separated from their family members. This bill is necessary because children should not be afraid to come to school, and parents should not be afraid to send their children to school."As during his first term, there is an increased fear of raids by ICE officials at schools and child care centers as President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to deport millions of undocumented immigrants across the United States. President-elect Trump has also threatened to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. According to the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction's office, this closure would risk around $8 billion in federal funds for California programs serving students with disabilities and low-income students.Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi represents California's 66th Assembly District, which includes El Segundo, Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, San Pedro and Torrance. Muratsuchi is Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace, and a member of the Committees on Budget, Budget Subcommittee on Education, Higher Education, Natural Resources, and the Joint Legislative Committee on Climate Change Policies.

In my 20 years living in Los Angeles, I've noticed a pattern. If you grow up on the West Coast, there's always a pull to return to the Pacific time zone. For Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy, coming back West wasn't what he initially envisioned as one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2022 out of Serra High School in Gardena, California. But after stops at Texas and Duke, the gifted QB has found his way back, now leading the Oregon State Beavers. With spring ball in full swing across the country, we're excited to welcome Maalik to the Y-Option podcast for the first time, presented by our founding partner 76.Oregon State football has always been built on successful quarterback play complimenting a strong run game with a tough defense and an incredible fan base. Now, in Year 2 under Trent Bray, the Beavers are in position to make some serious noise out West.I still remember my first trip to Corvallis. It was 2006, my 2nd year coaching at USC. We rolled into Reser Stadium as the No. 3 team in the country, only to leave with a 33-31 loss and the sound of chainsaws ringing in our ears. That game wasn't my first introduction to the Beavs, though. I had already faced them as a player in the 2002 Insight Bowl while starting for Pitt. We won, and freshman Larry Fitzgerald became a household name that night. But what stuck with me was Oregon State's identity - tough, disciplined, and relentless.Fast forward to today, and the man leading the Beavers is a familiar name. Bray was a linebacker on that 2002 team and now holds his dream job as Oregon State's head coach. And this offseason, he might have landed his dream quarterback. When the Pac-12 reshaped itself last season, skeptics doubted whether the Beavers could land an elite quarterback in the transfer portal. But Beaver Nation proved them wrong. Coach Bray, offensive coordinator/QB coach Ryan Gunderson, and the Oregon State staff made their pitch, and one of the hottest names in the portal chose them. As Maalik shared with me on Y-Option, he's never been happier, or more confident.Hearing that was special. Maalik Murphy is the type of leader young quarterbacks should look up to - a model of resilience and perseverance. We hope you enjoy today's conversation. And to those of you in our Y-Option paid community - thank you for your continued support.Back to spring ball film study!Much love and Stay Steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. On the morning of January 15, 1947, a woman walking with her young daughter spotted something pale and white lying in the weeds of a vacant lot. When the woman walked closer to get a better look, she made a horrifying discovery: the bisected body of a young woman, brutally murdered and like trash in the abandoned overgrown lot. The woman in the lot would soon be identified as twenty-two-year-old aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, who the press nicknamed “The Black Dahlia.” Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1947. For those of you keeping track of the handful of EV startups still standing, you may not have thought Faraday Future was one of them. The California company, established in 2014, made news in February when it was revealed that the automaker had been served with an eviction notice from its Gardena headquarters – one it narrowly evaded in the end after making some payments and agreeing to some fresh terms. In May, Faraday warned investors it could potentially file for bankruptcy – AND, that it was at risk of being de-listed by the Nasdaq.
Wendy and Shelley are doing a pod dump for the New Year due to holiday business and someone getting very sick! But don't worry they're back at it with the latest on the circuit!

In this episode of Chats and Tatts, host Aaron Della Vedova dives into a fascinating conversation about the evolving trends in tattooing culture with guest, the worlds best known black and gray tattoo artist, Carlos Torres. Born and raised in Gardena, California, during the 1980s and '90s, Carlos developed an early passion for art, inspired by the superheroes and fantasy illustrations in local comic books. Initially considering a career as an art teacher, he opted to pursue tattooing in his teenage years, a field where he is predominantly self-taught. A renowned tattoo artist with 27 years of experience, who has revolutionized the tattooing scene, Carlos and Aaron get into what younger tattoo enthusiasts are normalizing what they call "shitty tattooing," indicating a shift in appreciation for traditional techniques. In October 2017, Torres founded The Raven and The Wolves, a combined tattoo studio and fine art gallery located in Downtown Long Beach. This establishment serves as a collaborative space for artists and hosts classes and seminars led by Torres and other professionals The episode delves into a recent encounter with a celebrity's son who desires an aged-looking tattoo, highlighting a growing trend among younger clients who favor a more "imperfect" aesthetic. Aaron shares insights from a chat room where younger tattoo enthusiasts are normalizing what they call 'shitty tattooing,' indicating a shift in appreciation for traditional techniques. They also explore the intersections of tattooing with other art forms, such as painting and sculpting, and how these influences enrich the tattoo process. Tune in for insights on creativity, industry trends, and the future of tattooing. “It really has to do with this ability to, to dream and to live unencumbered.” — Dr. Dwight RadcliffSeeing justice, equity, and social transformation through the lens of hip-hop culture and Christian faith, Rev. Dr. Dwight Radcliff offers a vision of freedom and unencumbered life for the future of the Black community to which we can all bear witness.Raising challenging questions about the meaning of thriving in a culture dominated by fear, he speaks in a prophetic voice, interweaving the powerful, compounding effects of the language of the Gospel and the language of hip-hop.As a cultural theologian, community leader, and pastor, one of Dwight's many gifts is presence—presence to emotion, to the realty of injustice, and to the complexities of thriving in the context of race and gender. He speaks about the power of purpose and calling in his life, pointing out the unique insight hip-hop, rap, and R&B music can offer the human experience. He calls us to be attuned to the whole reality of pain, suffering, trauma, and struggle when discussing psychological and spiritual health and thriving. And he bears witness to fear, anger, and grief—re-sensitizing us to our pain and vulnerability—speaking truth for the sake of beauty and justice. In this conversation, we discuss:Thriving as the ability to dream and live unencumbered, and the ways the Black church embodies that thrivingThe grievous reality of Black double-consciousness that results from systemic racismAnd his personal experience as a Black man todayMental health in the Black communityThe power of sanctified purposeHow hip-hop culture and music help us understand thriving at embodied, emotional, and familial levels, beyond the horizon of rational understandingAnd how the prophetic vision of hip hop operates in the same tradition of justice spelled out by the Gospel that Jesus taught and lived.Show NotesCheck out Rev. #132: Continue our year-end roundup with us! Today, our episode about the 50th anniversary of hip hop. Original episode description below: Hip Hop officially turns 50 this weekend - Aug. 11th to be exact. As we all know by now, its roots are in New York. The west coast sound developed later but, when it finally hit, LA made Hip Hop its own. It's the late 1970s, disco is dead and funk is hitting the clubs in LA. Alonzo "Lonzo" Williams is at the center of it all — DJing, producing and bringing acts at his club, Eve After Dark in Compton. As a new genre borne out of funk and disco – hip hop – is taking over the East Coast, Williams wants to make sure his dance floor is packed. Run DMC performed there, the crowd went wild, and it clicked for him: bring hip hop into the L.A. club and music scene. He then started World Class Wreckin' Cru, and the West Coast hip hop sound took off. How to LA speaks to Williams, known as the "Godfather" of West Coast hip hop, about the beginnings of the sound. We sat down with him in his Gardena studio, where many of the greatest hip hop hits were recorded.
