The process of taking a new product from concept to reality is one of the most difficult in the beer industry. With questions of type, scale, promotion, production, delivery, and sales in constant tension with each other, it can create a paralysis that can cripple the potential of even the most promising innovation. Moreover, in an industry built upon a foundation of new product creation and novel flavors, failing to master the art of true Release Management can be a fatal flaw for otherwise successful organizations. In this seminar, attendees will learn how to manage a product release like the Project that it is. Processes for obtaining approvals and buy-in from disparate departments, creating a timeline, coordinating actions in multiple silos for maximum effect, and following through for success will all be explained and demonstrated in detail. With more than a decade of sales, retail management, and business analytic experience in the craft beverage industry, Aaron MJ Gore loves the opportunities that he has every day to make a difference for small business owners across the country. It's all about Michigan beer on this episode of Behind the Mitten, with guests both old and new joining us to talk about what's happening at our breweries and beyond. We start off interviewing one of the most exciting and prolific women in the Michigan craft beer scene, the always interesting Annette May. She holds many titles, but she might be most proud of having achieved certified Advanced Cicerone status, a pretty cool thing and not easy to do. She is also an instructor at Schoolcraft College in their brewing program, and one of the founding members of the women's craft beverage collective Fermenta, which is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit trade group initiated by women, committed to education, networking, diversity, and empowerment within the fermented beverage and food industries. She and her husband Mike Bardallis are working towards opening their own brewery, Full Measure Brewing Company, in Detroit's Eastern Market soon. One of our regular guests, David "Rings" Ringler stops by to catch us up on what is happening at his two German-inspired breweries located in West Michigan. Cedar Springs Brewing Company is where you'll find two sides to both the food and beer menus, both American and German. Indulge in traditional dishes like jagerschnitzel and spatzle, or pub-favorites like house-smoked pulled pork. You'll find the same beers here that you'll see at Kusterer Brauhaus on the West Side of Grand Rapids. Here, you'll find a tradtional German beer hall, with snacks and soccer to enjoy. We love his traditional style beers, including the always lovely Marzen. Now my mouth is watering.Pigeon Hill Brewing Company in Muskegon just celebrated their ten year anniversary in 2024, and co-owner Michael Brower stops by to share some of their recent developments. The brewery now has two locations you can visit, the Brewer's Lounge taproom located on 4th Street right downtown, and the new Socibowl by Pigeon Hill. Socibowl is an entertainment complex right downtown that features duckpin bowling, darts, pinball, oversized yard games, food, and of course, plenty of great craft beer. Michael shares some new and old favorite beers from Pigeon Hill, which you can find in distribution throughout the state. We are always excited when we get to meet new friends, and the owners of Elder Piper Beer and Cider did not disappoint. Trace and Eeva Redmond opened their Petoskey brewery in 2023, and were quickly named a "brewery to watch" by a national publication. The Redmonds bring years of top-level brewing experience with them, both here in Michigan and nationwide. When it came time to open their very own brewery, they decided to head back to Eeva's hometown, where they have been met with open arms. The Redmond's picked their Beach Grass Helles Lager as our selection for BEER OF THE WEEK this show.

Some people know early on they're destined to be their own boss. Rachael Hudson is one of these people. She's the co-owner and head brewer at Pilot Brewing Company in Charlotte, North Carolina, a small brewery that's made big waves in her local scene and beyond since opening in 2018. Since then, the business has racked up accolades at the Great American Beer Festival, the US Open Beer Championship, and the North Carolina Brewers Cup Competition, including being named North Carolina Brewery of the Year for 2023. But for as nice as the awards are, Rachael says opening a brewery isn't about fame (and it's definitely not about money). It's more about being an outlet for her ability and desire to teach curious consumers about what it is they're consuming. She's an Advanced Cicerone who plans to take the Master exam again later this year, as well as a national and international beer judge and co-host of the False Bottomed Girls podcast with Master Cicerone Jen Blair. Needless to say, she knows what she's talking about, and she's passionate about sharing her knowledge with absolutely anyone who will listen. In this episode, Rachael shares when and how she knew she had to go into business for herself and why education is such a critical part of what Pilot offers to the community. She also talks about her “less is more” mentality when it comes to recipe development, and how their ESB tends to outshine even their IPAs. Pilot probably isn't going to get much bigger, but that's not what Rachael wants anyway. She'd rather focus on perfecting what they put out and keep figuring out ways to show other people that they too can turn their passion into a profession.

Sandy Hugill is a Certified Cicerone®, a BJCP Certified beer, cider, and mead judge, she's on the board of her local homebrew club, SODZ, and she's the Sales and Experience Manager at Thunderwing Brewing in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to all that, she also offers guided beer tastings and consulting through her company, The Brewery Log. Sandy recently made a major career change, moving from project management roles in tech to the beer biz. She's a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) – every company in every industry needs strong project managers! Sandy took a very thoughtful approach to her career change, her plan included passing the Certified Cicerone® exam in order to gain beer knowledge and to strengthen her résumé. As a woman entering what has, at least in recent history, been a male dominated industry, Sandy wanted that leg up. She points out that learning about beer (or anything you're super interested in) is fun, so preparing for the Cicerone exams wasn't exactly an unpleasant process! She used both the Cicerone® Program's Road to Cicerone® material and Beer Scholar to help her prepare. In particular, she found the Beer Scholar practice exams to be critical for testing her knowledge and for lowering her exam anxiety when she took the real exam. Sandy reached out to me about coming on the “Meet a Cicerone®” show, noting there hadn't yet been a woman Cicerone® featured on it for the first few episodes. I was very aware of that issue as well and I was stoked to bring Sandy on for a chat! The Meet a Cicerone® podcast is all about sitting down with folks who are “all in on beer” to discuss their beer education journey and their careers. About nine months ago, AC Scott Fielder and I launched our Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program, the first of its kind, with an initial cohort of ten amazing beer geeks from all over the world and all over the beer industry. Jesús is the first of the bunch to pass the exam and get the title of Advanced Cicerone® on his resume! Huge congrats to Jesús! Jesús is based in Tijuana, Mexico. He's an electromechanical engineer by training and says, "what is brewing if not applied engineering?" He entered the beer industry in 2017 and spent several years brewing for Kaminari Brewing. He thought he was out of the beer game for a period...but a friend at Baja Canning pulled him back in with a great job offer! Jesús is currently the Operations Manager at Baja Canning in Tijuana, where he's managed the packaging of nearly 3 million beers to date! Jesús passed the Certified Cicerone® exam in late 2022 and passed the Advanced Cicerone® exam in early 2024, after going through our AC Coaching Program. Jesús is also a BJCP Certified beer, cider, and mead judge, an American Cider Association Certified Cider Guide, and he's got an Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) General Certificate in Beer Packaging, Can Specialist. Not only all that...phew, I'm running out of breath over here....Jesús is currently pursuing a Master's in Brewing and Distilling from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling in Scotland! Basically, Jesús is an absolute superstar. He's been traveling all over Central and South American to judge major beer competitions and he's now one of just five Spanish speaking Advanced Cicerones® in the world – though we're expecting to see several more Spanish speaking ACs come out of our coaching program in the next year! Scott & I sat down with Jesús to talk about his experience in the Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program, his career path, and what fuels his drive for knowledge. If you're thinking about pursuing some certifications in the booze biz, and especially if you're wondering about going for the AC, listen up! The “Meet a Cicerone” podcast is about sitting down with folks who are “all in on beer” to understand why folks do it, how they're applying what they learn, and how it has enabled them to make their own futures and careers. Let's do this. P.S. Flavor is much more than what something tastes like. It's aroma, mouthfeel, and flavors all mixed together to create a sensory experience that has the power to transport us through time and space. It's unique to each person, yet universal in scope; shared on some level by every human who ever existed.  In this episode, my guest is Mandy Naglich, a previous Good Beer Hunting contributor and author of “How To Taste: A Guide to Discovering Flavor and Savoring Life.” She's an Advanced Cicerone, a Certified Taster—yes, that's a real thing—and drinks educator who helps people dig into flavor to discover just how far our senses can go. Mandy says that anyone can be a capital-T “Taster”, explains what “supertasters” really are, and describes how familiarity with things like wine, beer, cider, or even sake can expand our notions of flavor through practice and group discussion.  You'll hear what drove her to dial into the world of flavor, when and why her book came to be, and the differences between craft beer, cider, and chocolate as they relate to existing guidelines and critical analysis. She won't teach you how to taste like her—simply, how to taste like you. With her guidance, we can all appreciate our senses a little bit more. So let's hear from her.

She tastes widely and adventurously, and shares her experiences with us in this book which comes out June 27, the day this episode goes live. I talked recently with Mandy about some of the amazing things she experienced and learned while writing the book, how we both approach the tasting process, and why tasting with other people can be so impactful. We tasted a beer and a chocolate together, and she also read a couple short passages from her book.Listen in as we talk with Mandy Naglich about her book How to Taste. The music for Bean to Barstool is by indie folk musician Anna ps. We recently finished off graduation season, and speakers at these ceremonies often talk about education as the doorway to better opportunities and experiences. Is this also true in beer? Does a higher beer education deliver on the promise of opportunity and experience?  My next guests and I discuss this question and how we're trying to answer it. If you ask me, the models have been proven and the signs are there that better beer education is the path to better experiences and better revenue. Just like getting an advanced degree from a university, the diploma is not the end but just the beginning of something better. We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 129 of Good Beer Matters with Advanced Cicerone's and Beer Scholar Team, Chris Cohen and Scott Fielder Show Links The Beer Scholar Cicerone New Brewer Article - The Value of a Beer Educated Staff  GBM 118 with Advanced Cicerone® Anudeep Mutyala Subscribe to the Good Beer Matters Monthly Newsletter for practical beer education. The Good Beer Matters Podcast comes to you with support from BreweryDB.com, your digital destination for brewery experiences! Chocolate has long been viewed as a childhood treat or a pick-me-up on a bad day rather than an agriculturally-rooted, craft-driven product displaying variety and nuance. A new wave of craft chocolate makers are doing for the chocolate world what craft brewers have done for American beer. And the really good news? Beer and chocolate pair great together. In this presentation, beer writer and Bean to Barstool creator and host David Nilsen will share everything you need to start a beer and chocolate pairing program at your brewery. David will discuss how the flavors of beer and chocolate can pair together and walk through the logistical and technical details of setting up both stand-alone pairing events and an ongoing retail pairing program. Along the way, he'll discuss the partnership opportunities with bean to bar and other craft chocolate makers, and how these can be utilizing in marketing and parlayed into other forms of collaboration. David Nilsen is a beer writer living near Dayton, Ohio. He is an Advanced Cicerone and an award-winning member of the North American Guild of Beer Writers, as well as a member of the National Book Critics Circle. In 2020, he created Bean to Barstool, a podcast and blog celebrating the intersections of craft beer and craft chocolate. He leads beer and chocolate pairings at breweries and bars, and in 2021 published the Pairing Beer & Chocolate zine, the only printed guide to pairing beer and chocolate, and the zine was included in Forbes' year-end list of the best beer and booze books of 2022. When you know you are an entrepreneur and plan on opening a business, and then fall in love with brewing and the community that surrounds it, there's nothing left to do, but open a brewery. And when your partner in life and business is a pilot, and your brewing style is to create small batch brews, again there's nothing left to do, but call said brewery, Pilot Brewing Company.Welcome to the first episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenemonal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Rachael Hudson, the Pilot Behind the BreweryStarting in the service industry at 19 in a restaurant that served a lot of beers, Rachael quickly learned that she wanted to know more about craft beer and set her professional career in motion doing exactly that. Not only is this her story about rising up through the ranks, eventually opening up her own brewery in North Carolina, but this is also a story about education, community, and innovative practice in a world that needs all of the above.Join us as we chat about the story behind the name, the Cicerone Certification Program (Racheal is an Advanced Cicerone), Pilot's small batch system (Can you guess the name of it?), her love for community brewing, Pilot's Charity of the Month program, malts and ingredients, and much more. Pilot Brewing Company is truly a neighborhood brewery - the kind where everybody knows your name.Oh, and she has a podcast where she and her friend, Jen, "separate their listeners through this crazy world of beer knowledge to help them figure it out." Heading back to Southeast Ohio, Brewery Travels makes a stop in Dayton this week! David Nilsen, a Beer Writer and Advanced Cicerone, and David McKinney, a brewery traveler with multiple beer podcasts, both hop on to talk with Joel about the beer scene in Gem City. Many breweries are discussed, including Carillon and Branch & Bone, as well as a variety of topics such as why many of the breweries are around the downtown area and how Dayton compares to other cities in Ohio. You can follow David Nilsen on Twitter: @davidnilsenbeer or beantobarstool and his sites are davidnilsenbeer.com & beantobarstool.com. You can follow David McKinney on Twitter: @MMAMcKinney and his website is MMAMcKinney.com Joel has visited over 700 breweries across 44 states plus Washington D.C. and has been able to make connections with many amazing individuals because of his travels. He is currently living on the road with his family, constantly “exploring more content and doing extensive research” (which just means visiting breweries and drinking beer)! The goal of Brewery Travels is to provide more information about craft beer scenes from around the country and shine a light on some of the excellent individual breweries that call these cities home.  From Portland, Maine to San Diego, California. Austin, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota. The bright lights of New York City to the farmland of rural Iowa. Brewery Travels plans to run the gauntlet of locations, providing in-depth information on as many places as possible. With episodes coming out weekly on Thursdays, Brewery Travels is where you can get your fix if you enjoy a craft beer or traveling. Cheers! I met David through my mentor and great friend Mackenzie Rivers of Map Chocolate. David has his own podcast called Bean to Barstool and it is all about craft beer and craft chocolate. These are truly two of my favorite things in the world.I love to daydream. Listening to Davis podcasts bring the same type of inspiration I try to put into my chocolate bars. I want people to take some time, slow down and let their mind travel to the places where the cacao is grown. When I listen to David speak of hops, malt, barley and yeast my senses get filled with the smells of the brewery or the first smell of a beer when you open the can or the bottle. I often try to picture the setting of the brewery or the chocolate shop and imagine what it is like.I have listened to all of David's podcasts, and I am entertained with each episode. More than being entertained, I learn something new each time. David is an Advanced Cicerone which is the beer equivalent of a sommelier. I love learning from people who are willing to share their knowledge and David is one of those people. With so many styles of beers and types of chocolate it is very refreshing to have someone in the world who is willing to dive into all of this, be open and honest with his thoughts and opinions and help to spread the word of craft beer and craft chocolate to whoever will listen.David hosts beer events both in person and virtually so make sure to check out his website www.davidnilsenbeer.com You can also find him @davidnilsenbeer and @beantobarstool on Instagram. Also, make sure to find his podcast Bean to Barstool on all the streaming platforms. My favorite is episode 30 wink wink. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In a nation with nearly 9,000 breweries, serving good beer is no longer enough to claim your piece of the pie. In order to survive and thrive, breweries, pubs and on-premise must evolve to provide "Better Experiences". But, what does that even mean? In this conversation, we will explore different ways to define and provide "Better Experiences." Once upon a time Jeremy Storton didn't know the difference between an ESB and an IPA. Now he is an Advanced Cicerone®, IBD certified brewer, BJCP judge, beer educator, content producer for the beer industry, and an award-winning beer writing and podcaster. What happened in between is a total mystery. His podcast, Good Beer Matters, serves to educate professionals on the craft and culture of beer. Besides the world of beer, he is also a waterman who sometimes writes and photographs about food, travel and aquatic adventure. Chris Leguizamon - Beer Educator

Beer Edge

My guest today is Chris Leguizamon, a beer educator and marketer living and working in San Diego and one of the new voices of craft beer. Chris has worked at several of southern California's top breweries, including the aforementioned Stone and Alesmith, as a tour guide and brand ambassador. From his earliest work in the industry, Chris recognized the importance of education, both for himself and for visitors taking his tours. He has honed his approach to beer education tour by tour, helping to engage with his audience. And he's pretty good at it. Or at least his girlfriend must think so. They met on one of his tours.San Diego is one of those beer cities that has incredible significance in the history of American craft beer. Heavyweights such as Stone, Port Brewing, the Lost Abbey, Alesmith, and others helped define what beer could be. But beer drinkers are a fickle lot and many of these OG breweries are struggling to redefine themselves in the new world of craft beer. Staying relevant isn't easy, especially when you've been in the game a while. And while these folks try to figure out whether dry, bitter West Coast IPAs have any place in our new hazy world order, the undeniably positive side to all of this is all of the new voices we're getting to hear from. For San Diegan Chris, beer education is the key to keeping the audience engaged.Chris uses his popular Instagram account (chris.thebeereducator) to promote knowledge about craft beer and to deepen connections to beer. Education is core to Chris's beer identity, both personally and professionally. Through his hard work he's even managed to achieve the Advanced Cicerone designation after studying on bus rides to his beer job. When the pandemic hit, Chris had to figure out how to migrate his beer education efforts, which had largely relied on tangible and in person events, to a new reality of learning at a distance. With the blessing and support of his employer, Pure Project, Chris took to hosting Instagram Live events and started a Virtual Book Club. Focused on taking his audience through beer writer Jeff Alworth's The Beer Bible, Chris teamed up with a local beer store, Bottlecraft, to curate a monthly six-pack to accompany each episode of his book club. He also worked with Alworth's publisher, Workman, to provide e-copies of the book to his audience at a discount. His education efforts are engaging, interesting, and creative, just the kind of energy that craft beer needs to sustain itself in an uncertain future. In our conversation, Chris and I discuss his beer education efforts, his success on social media, how he manages to avoid burning out when things get tough, and what makes a good tour guide. I start Chris out with a tough question and it leads to a loooooong pause in his response and some confusion. For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge.
