Votes are still being tallied for Oakland's Special Election that will determine who will finish out the term left vacant after former mayor Sheng Thao was recalled last fall. As of Wednesday, former Oakland City Councilmember Loren Taylor held a narrow lead over former U.S. representative Barbara Lee. Taylor campaigned as someone who knows the local issues and politics and can move the city forward. Lee represented Oakland in Congress for nearly 27 years and promised to bring more funding to address the city's pressing needs. Final results could take several weeks using Oakland's ranked-choice voting system. We'll look at the latest results and talk about this unusual race and the future of Oakland. Earlier this week, Oakland Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins announced the firing of former Mayor Sheng Thao's city hall staff, starting with the canning of Leigh Hanson over an allegedly problematic note-taking issue, and followed by the rest of the staff that had been hired by Sheng Thao. Joining us is Brandon Harami, one of the staffers who was fired this week, who has also experienced homophobic threats and harassment online which lead to a legal settlement, which is disregarded as null and void now that Harami no longer works at City Hall. —- Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Oakland Interim Mayor Fires Most Staff w/ Brandon Harami appeared first on KPFA.

Ousted Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. Doug Sovern is away today. Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao pleaded not guilty today, Jan. 17, to the several federal charges she's facing. Now, it's not just the former mayor facing an indictment, three others are also headed to court. This comes just two months after Thao was recalled by voters. To talk more about it, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier.
Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury following a criminal investigation. Federal officials are not commenting at this time, but a source tells the San Francisco Chronicle it follows an FBI investigation which led to a raid on Thao's house last June. KCBS Radio's news anchor Steve Scott spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier, wo has been covering that investigation.
A truncated campaign for Mayor of Oakland is underway in earnest, with just three months until voters will choose someone to complete the term of recalled Mayor Sheng Thao. For now, City Council President Kevin Jenkins is serving as interim Mayor. But now retired Congresswoman Barbara Lee is running for the full-time job, and so is former Councilmember Loren Taylor, who narrowly lost to Sheng Thao in the ranked choice instant runoff in 2022. We had Representative Lee on this program on Tuesday. Today, KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Loren Taylor.
Oakland has its third mayor in three weeks, and a big name politician is poised to try to take the job next. Longtime Representative Barbara Lee, who just left Congress, seems ready to announce that she will run to replace recalled Mayor Sheng Thao. For now, the interim mayor of Oakland is Kevin Jenkins, a young city councilmember and former Peralta College Board trustee, who was unanimously elected temporary mayor by the newly seated Council. That makes veteran councilmember Noal Gallo council president while Jenkins serves as Mayor, until the city can hold a special election in April. Sheng Thao stepped down three weeks ago after she was recalled by voters. Then council president Nikki Fortunato Bas acted as mayor for three weeks before moving to her new seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Now it's Jenkins' turn. A complicated and confusing sequence of events, and it isn't over yet, because Oakland will get its fourth mayor in the span of four months when someone is elected in April to finish Thao's term. Who will that person be? It's looking more likely that it will be Barbara Lee. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern.

It's the changing of the guard in Oakland today, as Mayor Sheng Thao leaves office after being recalled by the voters. The City Council President will serve as interim Mayor, while the Council gets ready to approve deep cuts in public safety spending. Mayor Sheng Thao, overwhelmingly recalled by the voters in November, steps down today after less than two years on the job. She remains defiant and unrepentant, despite presiding over a tumultuous regime that saw a fight with the police chief, the departure of the Oakland A's, stubbornly high crime and persistent homelessness, and now a massive budget deficit. Thao will be replaced for three weeks by City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, and then the council will choose a new temporary Mayor in January. Meanwhile, expect a contentious meeting of the Council this afternoon, as city leaders and constituents fight over how to close this huge deficit without hurting city services. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern.

East Bay voters had their say on whether to recall Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, and it looks like they chose to send both packing. With all precincts reporting early Wednesday, voters supported both recalls by a clear and nearly identical margin: 65.2% to 34.8% for Thao, and 64.8% to 35.2% for Price. However, Price has not admitted defeat and urged patience while all ballots are counted. “This presidential election, which has been a pivotal moment for our country as well as our state, witnessed significant voter participation, resulting in a large number of ballots in Alameda County. There are still so many more ballots to be counted, and in areas that I know we did well in getting our message out,” said Price in a statement Wednesday. “I am optimistic that when all the votes are counted, we will be able to continue the hard work of transforming our criminal justice system.”

In the first mayoral recall vote in Oakland in more than a century, voters will decide in the November election whether mayor Sheng Thao should be removed from office.
