After surging to victory in Oakland's special mayoral election, Barbara Lee is setting the agenda for her first 100 days in office. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Margie Shafer and Eric Thomas spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier.
Progressive icon Barbara Lee is Oakland's next mayor. How did Lee hold off Loren Taylor's upstart campaign, and how will she tackle the city's pressing issues? Like Oakland, Pleasanton is facing a significant budget shortfall. So why were Pleasanton officials so fixated on orange signage at a gas station? Horse racing is a thing of the past at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, and why was Shawn Wilson so persistent about wrapping up this episode?

Oakland's special mayoral election is suddenly a close race. We break down what Barbara Lee and Loren Taylor need to do to win on April 15. Later, the behavior of elected officials at taxpayer-paid conferences and the incidient involving a San Leandro councilmember. Plus, a segment on Oakland Councilmember Kenny Houston; and Shawn's late 80s rap knowledge.
It's time for our daily chat with KCBS Insider Phil Matier. Oakland Mayoral candidate Loren Taylor has gotten a surprise endorsement. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan says he's backing the former supervisor, who's taking on former Congresswoman Barbara Lee and several other candidates.
We look at the key players influencing the Oakland Mayor's race with Walter Riley, civil rights lawyer, activist and chair of the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund. Then, as some cities move to restrict surveillance, law enforcement takes to the sky. Fixed wing aircraft can stay up in the air for hours at a time and are often used in tandem with high definition cameras, heat sensors and cell-site simulation technology by law enforcement agencies. Does this type of aerial surveillance pose a risk to civil liberties? We discuss with Brian Hofer, Executive Director of Secure Justice, a non-profit that advocates against state abuse of power, and for reduction in government and corporate overreach. Hofer is also Chair of Oakland's Privacy Advisory Commission. Ousted Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. Federal officials are not commenting, but are planning what they're calling a major announcement tomorrow. For more, KCBS Radio's news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier.
Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been criminally indicted following an FBI corruption investigation two months ago. For more, KCBS Radio news anchor Eric Thomas spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.
Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury following a criminal investigation. Federal officials are not commenting at this time, but a source tells the San Francisco Chronicle it follows an FBI investigation which led to a raid on Thao's house last June. KCBS Radio's news anchor Steve Scott spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier, wo has been covering that investigation.
A truncated campaign for Mayor of Oakland is underway in earnest, with just three months until voters will choose someone to complete the term of recalled Mayor Sheng Thao. For now, City Council President Kevin Jenkins is serving as interim Mayor. But now retired Congresswoman Barbara Lee is running for the full-time job, and so is former Councilmember Loren Taylor, who narrowly lost to Sheng Thao in the ranked choice instant runoff in 2022. We had Representative Lee on this program on Tuesday. Today, KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Loren Taylor.
The campaign for a new Mayor of Oakland is underway now, after the recall of Mayor Sheng Thao. Former Representative Barbara Lee shook up the race by throwing her hat in the ring, making her the prohibitive favorite. Last week, Lee made her candidacy official, just days after retiring from Congress, and now she is the frontrunner in the April 15 special election for a new Mayor to finish the last two years of Thao's term. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart were joined by KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern. Sovern spoke with Congresswoman Lee, in one of her first major interviews since declaring her candidacy, to talk about her decision to run for Mayor.
Oakland has its third mayor in three weeks, and a big name politician is poised to try to take the job next. Longtime Representative Barbara Lee, who just left Congress, seems ready to announce that she will run to replace recalled Mayor Sheng Thao. For now, the interim mayor of Oakland is Kevin Jenkins, a young city councilmember and former Peralta College Board trustee, who was unanimously elected temporary mayor by the newly seated Council. That makes veteran councilmember Noal Gallo council president while Jenkins serves as Mayor, until the city can hold a special election in April. Sheng Thao stepped down three weeks ago after she was recalled by voters. Then council president Nikki Fortunato Bas acted as mayor for three weeks before moving to her new seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Now it's Jenkins' turn. A complicated and confusing sequence of events, and it isn't over yet, because Oakland will get its fourth mayor in the span of four months when someone is elected in April to finish Thao's term. Who will that person be? It's looking more likely that it will be Barbara Lee. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern.
As the future of Oakland hangs in the balance, Representative Barbara Lee is making her case for the Mayor's office. For more on her platform, KCBS Radio news anchor Eric Thomas spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier and former mayor of San Francisco Willie Brown.
It's the changing of the guard in Oakland today, as Mayor Sheng Thao leaves office after being recalled by the voters. The City Council President will serve as interim Mayor, while the Council gets ready to approve deep cuts in public safety spending. Mayor Sheng Thao, overwhelmingly recalled by the voters in November, steps down today after less than two years on the job. She remains defiant and unrepentant, despite presiding over a tumultuous regime that saw a fight with the police chief, the departure of the Oakland A's, stubbornly high crime and persistent homelessness, and now a massive budget deficit. Thao will be replaced for three weeks by City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, and then the council will choose a new temporary Mayor in January. Meanwhile, expect a contentious meeting of the Council this afternoon, as city leaders and constituents fight over how to close this huge deficit without hurting city services. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is under a federal investigation. Today, an Oaklandside reporter talks about what we know so far. Then, we hear the deep thoughts and feelings of a teenager with apraxia. And, we hear how a blind woodworker helps other visually impaired artists feel comfortable in the woodshop.
The Duong family owns the city's recycling company, California Waste Solutions. In the subpoena, investigators specifically name the company's CEO, David Duong, and his son, Andy Duong. The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office remain tight-lipped about what — and who — their investigators are investigating. When asked about the grand jury's subpoena on Tuesday, a USAO spokesperson told KRON4, “I am not permitted even to confirm the existence (or non-existence) of a grand jury investigation.” In a 1-on-1 interview with KRON4 last week, Thao maintained her innocence. The mayor also asserted that she is not the subject of the federal investigation.

How did Colorado pay for Deion? (23:20) Review: Past Lives. (27:40) We have another Oakland update. It never stops. This time Oakland mayor Sheng Thao has taken the gloves off against Athletics owner John Fisher. (36:35) NPPOD. (39:40) The pitch clock is here to stay in the postseason. Players didn't want it.
