For Washington media, the decade of Donald Trump has proved to be challenging, unnerving and rewarding. On a special edition of Washington Week with The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg speaks with Kara Swisher, one of the great analysts and interpreters of our communications future, about the Trump era and the future of the media.
In March, The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, began receiving top secret messages from national security officials in the Trump administration after he'd been inadvertently added to an internal Signal chat. Many of those same officials oversaw recent military strikes against Iran. On this week's More To The Story, host Al Letson sits down with Goldberg to discuss what “Signalgate” taught him about the Trump White House and his concerns for the future of American democracy.Producer: Josh Sanburn, with help from Steven Rascón, Artis Curiskis, and Julia Haney | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Nikki Frick | Interim executive producers: Brett Myers and Taki Telonidis | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Listen: In Fallujah, We Destroyed Parts of Ourselves (Reveal)Read: The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans (The Atlantic)Read: All the Ways Trump Officials Are Downplaying the “War Plans” Group Chat (Mother Jones)Read: New Report: Trump Administration Just Got Hit With Another Signal Chat Scandal (Mother Jones) Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
President Trump and key members of his administration claim that U.S. airstrikes "obliterated" Iran's nuclear program, despite the leak of an initial intelligence report contradicting that assessment. Join moderator Jeffrey Goldberg, Shane Harris and Ashley Parker of The Atlantic, David Ignatius of The Washington Post and Andrea Mitchell of NBC News to discuss this and more.
Once upon a time, Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, set off to make a name for himself in American political commentary … only to discover that some other guy had the same idea. At long last, Jeffrey and Jonah Goldberg convene at the Agincourt of podcasting to discuss the tenuous ceasefire between Iran and Israel, the mystical Obama Doctrine, and that SignalGate debacle. The Remnant is a production of The Dispatch, a digital media company covering politics, policy, and culture from a non-partisan, conservative perspective. Just as U.S. airstrikes against Iran's nuclear program seemed likely, President Trump found a temporary off-ramp, saying he will make his decision within two weeks. Join moderator Jeffrey Goldberg, Jonathan Karl of ABC News, David Ignatius of The Washington Post, David Sanger of The New York Times and Nancy Youssef of The Wall Street Journal and The Atlantic to discuss these stories and more.
On a special edition of Washington Week with The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg is joined by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times to unpack the start of President Trump's second term and his efforts to address critical issues around the world. Friedman dives into his own recent trip to Israel, the parallels between Trump and Netanyahu and the rise of authoritarianism in both nations.
Jeffrey Goldberg has been a thorn in President Donald Trump's side since the real-estate developer–turned reality-show host first ran for office in 2016. Back then — ten months before he took over as editor-in-chief of The Atlantic — Goldberg wrote a piece headlined “A Brief Exercise Meant to Illuminate the Prejudices of Donald Trump.” The magazine has continued its unsparing criticism of Trump ever since, and Goldberg's recent Signalgate story was just the latest in a series of blockbuster scoops that have nominally embarrassed the president. On Friday, Goldberg sat down with Kara for an on-stage interview at the WBUR Festival in Boston. They discussed Trump's corruption, the unserious people staffing his administration (as well as with the very serious Russell Vought, a Project 2025 architect who heads the OMB), the Democratic Party's travails, and the state of the news media. Most presidents wait until they leave the White House to cash in, but President Trump takes a different approach. If there's a way to make money off the presidency, he's on it. Join moderator Jeffrey Goldberg, Peter Baker of The New York Times, Leigh Ann Caldwell of Puck and Stephen Hayes of The Dispatch to discuss this and more.
Presidential legacies tend to be debated for decades, but in the four months since Joe Biden left office, a consensus seems to have emerged that his decision to stand for a second term all but guaranteed Donald Trump's return to power and that efforts to hide his infirmities were disastrous and dishonest. Jeffrey Goldberg speaks with Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson about their book, “Original Sin.”
After being welcomed in royal style by Gulf leaders, President Trump announced enormous deals and made dramatic foreign policy decisions on the fly. He also advanced the cause of his family's businesses. Join moderator Jeffrey Goldberg, Peter Baker of The New York Times, Stephen Hayes of The Dispatch, David Ignatius of The Washington Post and Andrea Mitchell of NBC News to discuss this and more.
President Trump's leadership on the world stage is being put to the test and the challenge for America's allies and adversaries alike is figuring out what his actual policies are. Join moderator Jeffrey Goldberg, Susan Glasser of The New Yorker, Asma Khalid of NPR, David Sanger of The New York Times and Nancy Youssef of The Wall Street Journal to discuss this and more.
Is every day Watergate Day in the anti-Trump media? At a London event, Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg said "every day is a kind of Watergate at this point," implying Trump was a crook like Richard Nixon. Brian Stelter celebrated this "Truth Tellers" summit of liberals congratulating themselves for valiantly fighting against the Trump menace.

Truth Be Told with Booker Scott – On day 101 of Trump's second term, NSA Director Mike Waltz and deputy Alex Wong were dismissed following a controversial Signal chat that included journalist Jeffrey Goldberg. Vice President JD Vance insists Waltz's brief assignment aimed to clean up the agency before his UN ambassadorship, and questions still persist today.
On Sunday, President Trump tangled with NBC's Kristen Welker, after he had verbal combat with ABC's Terry Moran and Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic. Four years ago, President Biden granted no interviews to the liberal media. They didn't care. Once again, Trump is punished for granting broad access to hostile journalists.

This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower, Tyler McBrien, and Kevin Frazier to talk through the week's big national security news, including:“Aliens vs. Predators.” Despite forceful legal pushback—including by the U.S. Supreme Court—the Trump administration is working hard to continue its campaign to remove foreign aliens it accuses of pursuing a “predatory incursion” from the country using the Alien Enemies Act. How far will it go? And to what extent can the courts (or anyone else) stop them?“Aye Aye Robot.” Both the Biden and Trump administrations were fans of artificial intelligence (AI) and set out policies to incorporate it into government decision-making. But while the Biden administration focused much of its efforts on guardrails, the Trump administration has increasingly torn them down as part of a broader push to incorporate the nascent technology into government decision-making. What are the risks and potential benefits of this sort of government by AI? “For Pete's Sake.” Beleaguered Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is more beleaguered than ever this week, after reports that, in addition to inadvertently sharing classified secrets with Atlantic reporter Jeffrey Goldberg, he also passed them to his wife, brother, and personal lawyer on another Signal thread. Meanwhile, a former adviser (and established Trump loyalist) went public with allegations that Hegseth's management has led to chaos at the Defense Department and called for his resignation. Will this be enough for the Trump administration to cut bait and run? Or does his support in the MAGAsphere simply run too deep?In object lessons, Tyler, fresh from biking adventures abroad, hyped the routes, photos, and resources on bikepacking.com, if physical exertion is your idea of relaxation. Anna, finding other ways to relax, came to the defense of The Big Short in helping to soothe her anxiety amid more current market upheaval. Doubling down on the “no relaxation without tension” theme, Scott's outie binge-watched Severance while on vacation. And Kevin, very on-brand, was quick to bring us a feel-good story of a new community partnership to support AI skill-building in Austin-based nonprofits. This week on the Mark Levin Show, publishing classified information violates the Espionage Act, yet Jeffrey Goldberg, who has suggested he has published classified information, faces no apparent consequences. Despite confessing his awareness and emphasizing the information's classified nature, the lack of accountability—coupled with efforts to exaggerate an insignificant Signal chat—raises questions about the legal consistency. Nothing happened as a result of this Signal chat, but Democrats are attempting to spin it into something significant that it isn't. A Republican congresswoman pushed for proxy voting for pregnant women, but the vast majority of Republicans don't believe in proxy voting. Show up or don't vote. 9 Republicans got upset and voted with Democrats, which canceled votes for the week. A tiny minority shouldn't be able to derail President Trump's priorities. We can't have this constant blackmail. They have a budget bill to pass, and they need to get massive tax cuts in place. You can't believe the media. Additionally, ICE has deported over 100,000 illegal immigrants in the last 70 days under the Trump administration. While the illegal immigration crisis is improving, progress is hindered by the radical left as Judges continue to challenge Trump's efforts to remove illegal criminals. Radical district judges claim that illegal criminals have a right to due process, aiming to clog the court system. Trump is pursuing an unprecedented strategy in U.S. history by combining massive tax cuts, deregulation, reductions in government size and personnel, and tariffs, all with the goal of reindustrializing America. Do tax cuts cause inflation or cause deficits? No. Inflation stems from government actions, not the private sector. Tax cuts create economic growth, wealth, and prosperity - across the board. On Monday's Mark Levin Show, publishing classified information violates the Espionage Act, yet Jeffrey Goldberg, who has suggested he has published classified information, faces no apparent consequences. Also, Sen Chuck Grassley introduced legislation to clarify the scope of Judicial relief. “The bill would limit federal court orders to parties directly before the court – ending the practice of universal injunctions and clarifying the constitutional role of the judicial branch.” This needs to be done. Later, Randy Fine calls in to discuss the importance of Tuesday's special election in Florida's 6th Congressional District, urging Floridians to treat it as a national election due to its potential impact on the whole country. Afterward, Elon Musk revealed that over 4.8 million noncitizens have received Social Security numbers since fiscal year 2021 under the Biden administration, with a significant spike to 2.1 million in 2024 alone. 1.3 million of these noncitizens were also on Medicaid, and some may have even voted. In addition, Democrats know what they stand for – they support socialism, open borders, a weak military, and electoral fraud, but their challenge lies in the lack of American public support for these positions. Rather than rethinking their stance, they are focused on finding better ways to sell their agenda – these are the American Marxism. Finally, Mark explains the biggest problem with Marxism. Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine's editor-in-chief, was mistakenly included in a Signal group chat featuring senior members of the Trump administration discussing highly sensitive information about imminent war plans. In an excerpt from the Insider podcast, Preet Bharara and Joyce Vance break down the hypocrisy and incompetence on display this week from Trump's White House. In the full episode, Preet and Joyce discuss: – The naming of Trump's former personal attorney Alina Habba as the interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey; and – The attacks targeting Tesla and DOJ's decision to investigate these acts as domestic terrorism; and – The latest in Trump's ongoing efforts to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members. No matter how hard Republicans try to spin the sharing of top secret military attack plans on an insecure app, the colossal f***up of an administration that claimed it was rooting out incompetence is plain on its face. And while Jeffrey Goldberg told Tim Tuesday that he was mulling over releasing the Signal messages, he went ahead and did so after the administration accused him of lying and sneaking into the Signal group chat. Plus, Russia pretends to agree to a cease-fire, Breitbart kind of grows up, and a new book examines Capitol Hill's craziness—including Trump's control of the House GOP, Nancy Mace's delusions of grandeur, and Schumer's infinite faith in the Republican Party of old. On Monday's Mark Levin Show, an Obama-appointed judge on the D.C. Circuit obnoxiously opposed the Trump administration's plan to deport Venezuelan gang members who entered the U.S. illegally. They are here illegally; there's no due process. These judges are overstepping their role by trying to create due process for these individuals when this is a national security matter outside their jurisdiction. These judges are protecting brutal gang members as part of a broader battle, with the ultimate war aimed at undermining Trump. Also, the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg claims he was accidentally included in a text chain about military plans to strike the Houthis. How can this be an accident? Secretary Hegseth Pete Hegseth came out and said, “nobody was texting war plans.” Then, according to left-wing Politico, NSA Mike Waltz's “future in doubt following accidental war plan leak,” which may be disinformation or a leak. There's a campaign to oust Waltz, most likely from the isolationists. This is a set-up. The administration must defend Waltz against this apparent push to remove him. Later, the Houthis “have attacked U.S. warships 174 times and commercial vessels 145 times since 2023.” That's 319 acts of war. That's why President Trump ordered military operations against the Houthis. They attacked us over and over and over again. Unprovoked. For the hate America First appeasers, why are you on the side of the enemy? Finally, Sen Ron Johnson calls in to explain the critical importance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, emphasizing that this race carries significant national implications. Smith explaining to Megyn Kelly why he could easily win the primary for the Democratic Party for the 2028 election; and much more. Senior members of Trump's Cabinet got caught sharing attack plans—down to details of who they were planning to kill, and with what kind of weapons, while also wishing Godspeed to our soldiers—and now they'll say anything to get out of the jam they put themselves in. Also, JD Vance openly questioned the judgement of the president in front of those very senior Cabinet members. Meanwhile, vengeance has long been a defining feature of Trump, but the habits of his heart have also infected his supporters. And they've become a moral freak show cheering on deportations of families and starving Africans. Jeff Goldberg and Pete Wehner join Tim Miller. show notes Jeff's original scoop on getting texted war plans (gifted) Pete's piece on Trump's insatiable appetite for revenge Trump's 1992 interview with Charlie Rose
