In this encore episode from Christmas eve 2020, we celebrate the life and legacy of Tony Barrand who died on January 29, 2022. Tony Barrand was born in England in 1945 but has lived most of his life in southern Vermont in the vibrant town of Brattleboro—a place that shines all the more brightly because of him. This Cornell PHD and Professor Emeritus of Boston University is not just an academic, but also a singer, dancer, and story-teller. What first grabs you is his way with words—he can give them weight, or make them sparkle depending on the point he is trying to make, but he uses words to greatest effect when he sings. His handsome tenor voice really shines when joined by his singing comrades (John Roberts, Fred Breunig and Andy Davis) from the band Nowell Sing We Clear. This is top-notch exuberant music-making in a traditional style that will have you singing along, dancing, and entranced by the magic of the story-telling. Guaranteed to brighten your days during this darkest time of year. Executive director and co-founder of Sing Me A Story, Austin Atteberry, joins Wendy Snyder, filling in for Bob Sirott, to talk about how the foundation was started and how musicians can become volunteers.
Austin Atteberry noticed when a beautiful woman named Sara moved right next door to him in Nashville, Tennessee in 2010. Austin found out that she worked as a Child Life Specialist at Vanderbilt Hospital and Sara found out that he was a Singer- Songwriter. Sara invited Austin to the hospital, told him to bring his guitar and she would introduce him to some of the kids who were patients. As we turn the clock ahead 12 years Sara and Austin are married, have three children and Austin is the founder and Executive Director of the SING ME A STORY FOUNDATION. Austin will talk about this non-profit, which invites songwriters to read stories written by Pediatric Cancer patients and other kids battling diseases or other maladies, turn these stories into songs free of charge , and distribute them back to these kids, their families, and organizations which bring happiness to these kids who are going through so many difficulties,Over 5000 songwriters have participated in this venture and 1200 kids have benefitted from it. This Foundation promises even bigger things to come as time goes on.
“I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.” - Billy Joel “Sing Me A Story” is doing amazing work in a beautiful way, bringing together people all over the world to create music utilizing children's stories. Their mission quoted from their website is “to serve deserving families in need through the imaginative stories of their children and the power of music. With the help of songwriters, we create music inspired by the creative stories of children. These songs and stories remind us all of how much we have in common, raise awareness and financial aid for nonprofits around the world and, most of all, provide families with an unforgettable experience that brings joy and healing.” This conversation with Executive Director and Co-Founder, Austin Atteberry is bound to leave you completely inspired… from the very beginning of how Austin created Sing Me A Story with his now wife, Sara to the process by which SMAS has gone through to bring together several people to build this beautiful community creating this music and incredible experiences, their story is amazing! The Sing Me a Story Foundation believes that the greatest gift in the world is the gift of giving. If we can give the children we serve the opportunity to give the one thing they all have regardless of circumstance, their imagination, and bring those imaginations to some of the largest microphones we can find in an effort to remind us all that we have more in common than we often attribute to ourselves, we will have accomplished our goal. We believe our world is a world destined to be united and if Sing Me a Story can be one small part of that - we will have achieved our mission. How It Works1. Children involved with organizations serving children in need are given the opportunity to write and illustrate stories about ANYTHING they want.2. Those stories are then distributed to our SMAS Songwriters through our website,www.SingMeAStory.org, who view the stories, turn them into songs based on the ideas presented in the stories, record them and send them back to the children by uploading them back to the site.3. SMAS Jukebox Campaigns are then created for each song uploaded in an effort to raise money for the Partnering Organizations and Sing Me a Story. When fans contribute to the SMAS Jukebox Campaigns, they receive the song as an Mp3 with their donation receipt.Giving Tuesday campaign featuring 8-year-old Jeremiah, Stephen Kellogg + Tyrone Wells (songwriters), Numotion (sponsor), United Cerebral Palsy of Central Florida (nonprofit partner)$65 provides a song for a child in need.Learn more: www.singmeastory.org
