Today is the 36th anniversary of the opening of Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World. As Rick continues to look at the tenure of former-Disney chairman and CEO Michael Eisner, the creation of Disney-MGM Studio is an important part of that story.
Last fall saw the release of a massive new autobiography from legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Weis, who ultimately led Walt Disney Imagineering as its president toward the end of his career with the company. Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering recounts Bob's amazing time with Disney Imagineering, working on new theme parks like the Disney-MGM Studios and Tokyo DisneySea to conceptualizing projects that never materialized. It's a wonderful look at not only one person's career, but also the major endeavors that they contributed to. Today there are over two dozen major shows that have played on Broadway, The West End, and across the globe. I'll share with you some of my favorites and why--along with some stories you may not have heard about these phenomenal shows. And we'll step over to Epcot to talk about a new exhibit that has just opened up at CommuniCore in World Celebration. It's just one component of a very popular time of year in this park. Angie Schworer is a Broadway stage actress and dancer who got her start working at Walt Disney World, where she performed in 15 Years of Magic and the Diamond Horseshoe Revue, and she opened Disney MGM Studios! From there, Angie headed to New York where her Broadway career started in 1991 when she booked "The Will Rogers Follies." She went on to shows such as "Crazy For You," "Sunset Boulevard," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Young Frankenstein," "Catch Me If You Can" (where she was an Astaire Award nominee), "Big Fish," "Something Rotten!," and most recently played Minnie in "Some Like It Hot." Despite these amazing credits, Angie's probably best known for 2 shows. The first was "The Producers" in 2001. She was in the original Broadway cast an ensemble member and was the Ulla understudy. She also did the national tour for a year, and then returned to Broadway in 2003 and served as the permanent Ulla replacement until the show closed in 2007, making her the longest-running Ulla. She was also in the 2005 movie starring Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, and Will Ferrell. The other show she's best known for is "The Prom," where she starred as Angie Dickinson. She was nominated for the 2019 Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Female Dancer in a Broadway Show for her performance. Enjoy listening to incredible Angie Schworer! o much of what was the Disney-MGM Studios over the years has come and gone. Only one attraction remains as it was largely designed during its opening. This park is perhaps more radically different than any other Disney park between its opening and the present. And yet there are some really wonderful gems that were there when the park opened, and they are still here today. We look at those timeless pieces and what makes them such treasured keepsakes of what is Disney's Hollywood Studios today. Each of them may have some surprises you may not have known until now. So join us for Disney-MGM Treasures From 35 Years Ago. ________________________________________________________ My new book, A Century of Powerful Disney Insights is available! On this weeks show we do a watch-along of an episode of WCW Nitro from July 1996! This unique episode was live from Disney MGM Studios!
It seems hard to imagine that Disney's Hollywood Studios opened 35 years ago! The first park to open under the leadership of Michael Eisner, the Disney-MGM Studios as it was known then has a storied past. How it got started, why it became the way it did, and how it competed with Universal Studios is the stuff of movie legend. Join us as we look at how an idea became Walt Disney World's third theme park; how it struggled to move from a half-day concept to a full-day park experience; how it came to add the MGM name; how it sought to imitate Universal and how Universal in turn sought to imitate Disney; and how the park was so popular in its first weeks of operation that it turned away guests before it even reached its official opening time. Disney's Hollywood Studios turns 35 at Walt Disney World this May, opening as Disney-MGM Studios in 1989. Over its 35-year history, the park has undergone a large evolution, so extensive that its five opening day attractions (including the Great Movie Ride and Backlot Studio Tour) are all no longer a part of the park. Nevertheless, this is a park that Disney fans of all ages adore, and it's full of interesting history and incredible Imagineering details worth discussing. In this episode, I'm joined by Tim Moore from WDW Magazine to discuss some of our favorite Imagineering stories and personal anecdotes about Disney's Hollywood Studios. Plus, sure to take advantage of a special promo code just for listeners. Promo code SKYWAY gets you 15% off the shop at wdwmagazine.com. In episode 16 ACEFIELD RETRO returns with MIKE BELCASTER to discuss the JULY 8th & JULY 15th MONDAY NITRO both emanating from the DISNEY MGM STUDIOS! We rear back and get ready to start the NWO era in WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING. As usual, we use the newsletter as it happened in real-time to tie in CONTEXT and bring us completely back to 1996 to understand the scope of what was happening in the world of wrestling. HOGAN is officially a heel and he addresses the audience for the first time donned in all black. REY MYSTERIO gets his first CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP win against DEAN MALENKO in what was another awesome display of wrestling that transcends time. By a streak of BAD LUCK, WCW is forced to run two taped NITROS in front of largely non wrestling FANS as they're follow up for the biggest HEEL TURN in history because of TURNER trucks all covering the 1996 OLYMPICS IN ATLANTA. WCW took a backseat and had to record in DISNEY STUDIOS. DID IT HURT THEM? As always, this episode is sure to be an absolutely incredible time with the main homie Belly to Belcaster. It's going to be hard to top that episode last week but you know we are trying our hardest on the build to HOG WILD. We are certain you will enjoy the ride with us taking our own drinks based on WCW BOOKING. Who knows how many DQ finishes will force us to take SHOTS OF NOSTALGIA live on air?! As for the tying-in, that's the best part. We place what is happening in 1996 and compare it to 2022's wrestling platform. Just a great discourse about retro pro wrestling! DIZNEY COAST TO COAST - The Ultimate Unofficial Disney Fan Podcast
Disney fans rejoice! With season 11 beginning, I have to start things off in a big way. Or shall I say a little way, as I have one of the stars from the hit 1989 Disney classic, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” joining me on the show. I'm absolutely delighted that Amy O'Neill, who played shrunk daughter Amy Szalinski in the movie, joined me for a chat. In our discussion, you'll hear Amy talk all about what it was like shooting such an intensely special effects heavy movie, the unforgettable experience premiering the film at Disney-MGM Studios, the “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” sequel focusing heavily on Amy Szalinski that never came to be, and some Rick Moranis talk. This mini-episode is a compliment to our 2022 holiday episode. We promised we'd eventually track down the fellow responsible for bringing the Lights of Winter to EPCOT Center. Brian and Todd talk to Jim Heffelfinger whose 20 year career with Walt Disney World began as stage manager at the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Review at Pioneer Hall (where he met and shares a great story about our friend Billy Flanigan). Over the next two decades he worked with Disney Legend Ron Logan and the rest of the entertainment team to bring Christmas as we know it to EPCOT, Fantasmic to Florida, the Muppets to Hollywood Boulevard, the holidays and a parade to Animal Kingdom and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights to Disney-MGM Studios. Some of his shows, like Beauty & The Beast Live on Stage are still running today much as he designed them while others are very fondly remembered. This is a fun interview where you'll learn a lot and, of course, we ask him for memories of Ron Logan and Dick Nunis and invite him to a future RetroMagic event. Jim Heffelfinger is an unsung hero of holidays in Walt Disney World and many beloved live shows. Enjoy the interview.
Jen and Frank chat about the Epic Universe announcement, when Disney-MGM Studios joined Magic Kingdom and EPCOT in 1989, and the hype behind Islands of Adventure in 1999. Welcome to Episode 87 of the RetroWDW Podcast: Hungry For Hollywood - We appreciate your support and hope you have been enjoying each and every episode. Be sure to check out some of our previous shows from over the years. We have visited multiple parks, resorts, and just about everything else in between. Listener Mail We open the mailbag monthly and are ready to hear from you. Be sure to reach out with questions, stories, memories, and more. You never know if your letter will be read on a future episode: podcast@retrowdw.com Our first letter is from Mike and he is curious about a particular stairway at Magic Kingdom. We need some experts out there to help Mike out with this stairway and what happened to it.... Amy is our next letter and she is a new listener, welcome! Amy gives us some great information about working at The Disney Institute and how she was able to take courses for free as an employee. Thanks for the fun stories Amy. Another Amy, another letter. This Amy is talking about Episode 32 which was all about Universe of Energy. She gives us some information on the dinosaur song we spoke of, which can be heard here. Enjoy! Sylvia is up next and she is curious as to what happened with the Cigar Store Indians from Magic Kingdom. We give some insight into those and where they might have ended up. She also wanted to know where this photo was taken... Thanks for your letter Sylvia! Emily is the next note we received, she was showing off her Dreamfinder Watch, which you can still get for yourself or as a gift. Visit our LBV History page for more information. Paula wrote in with another vintage family photo taken on Main Street. We have been collecting these gems where you dress up and it looks old timey. Thanks Paula! Finally, our last letter is from Donna and she speaks about the Room with a Skew and how her son loved playing in there. Donna is a former Gold Key Member along with Todd and she has some fighting words for Brian, which leads to a little history about The Pretzel Belt. Who knew? Main Topic Buckle up because we are going back to Hollywood, well the way it was in your memories, but never was. Brian is leading us through the early years of food and drink at the Disney-MGM Studios. One of the last great theme parks on Disney property and one that always has fascinating stories coming to us about the opening days and how things were drastically different when compared to now. We get to go through the different eateries that existed in the early years, including the Hollywood Brown Derby. How as very disappointed that it wasn't in the shape of a derby hat. We also discuss the Echo Lake restaurants, highlighting that the Fifties Primetime Cafe and the Hollywood and Vine cafeteria share a kitchen. The team discussed the unique dining experience offered at these restaurants and the challenges faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our handy Birnbaum's guide is utilized throughout the episode, as is our good friend Reimund Pitz, who you may remember joined us during RetroMagic 50. Take a trip with us and Reimund around the Disney-MGM Studios, discussing each restaurant and how each menu has been changed over the years. We lost a ton of great options over the years and we even get a little history along the way about why some of these changes have happened. We hope you enjoy! RetroMagic Updates We are so glad so many of you could make it to our most recent event all about EPCOT Center and the 40 year anniversary. What does a lost black cat, angry neighbors, and a Supreme Court case have to do with one of Hollywood Studio's extinct attractions? In this episode of Distory, we bring back the much-missed Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights for one more glimpse of Holiday magic. Starting with its humble beginnings of 1,000 lights in Arkansas, this spectacle had its share of growing pains (and lawsuits) before it moved to Disney-MGM Studios and became a memorable Christmas tradition every year for thousands of Disney fans. From scavenger hunts to technological advances through the years, we dig deep into the meaning of this special attraction and explain where you can still (sort of) see it today. How do you approach investors in a time when anyone rarely makes money? What goes in your business plan? Why should you share the bad news first with your potential investors? Why should you use your own money to make your own film? Why shouldn't you pre-judge potential investors? Why is getting a mentor essential? We are going to dive into all that with filmmaker Scott DuPont in this episode about the five big shifts you must make to fund your indie films. (Episode 43) Hosted by Director/Producer Jenn Page. To join our private FB group for directors or to learn about The Working Director course that helps emerging filmmakers become working directors faster, visit TheWorkingDirector.Pro. More on Scott: Scott duPont was born in New Jersey (also lived in New York) is an award-winning actor with 3 Crystal Reel Awards based in Hollywood. duPont honed his craft in the Florida market living near Universal Studios FL & Disney-MGM Studios for 15 years working on 100+ short & independent films and TV pilots. In 2005, duPont was elected State President of the Florida Motion Picture & Television Association and to the Board of Directors for Film Florida. He was later elected President of the Florida Cast & Crew Association, served as Chairman of the Florida Alliance of Media & Entertainment and was a founding member of the United Film & Television Artists. Behind the camera, duPont is a member of the Producers Guild of America, the International Documentary Association. One of Scott's unique advantages to having successful film releases is his marketing skills which led him to pursue a Master's degree in Marketing with his thesis on Film Marketing. His obsession on marketing proved a great resource to exploit his company's films using creative strategies with smaller P & A budgets to get R.O.I. to his investors over the years. In between productions, duPont has written columns for several film industry publications including The Director's Chair, Focus In, and ChART magazine, and currently hosts the Podcast "Finance YOUR Movie!" which helps educate, inspire & empower other filmmakers to get money for their own projects. Making connections & reading scripts via the different film organizations he helmed, Scott optioned and purchased several sought after scripts & valuable properties. In 2007, with the backing of his most loyal investors, he formed Scott duPont, Inc. to acquire & develop additional film properties. duPont is now teaming up with existing investors and an investment group out of New York & Miami to raise a new production slate to produce & market several films (now in development). The 1st film belonging to this new slate is: "Ticket Trouble" expected to start production in 2024. WDW Radio # 712 - Interview with Former Imagineer Steve Kirk - From the WDW Radio Archives After visiting EPCOT this past week, and in thinking about the future of that park, specifically the Imagination pavilion, I went way back into the WDW Radio Archives to being you one of my earliest interviews. Let's go back to 2007 and Show # 30, when, as part of my Legends of Disney Imagineering feature, I shared my conversation with former Imagineer Steve Kirk. Steve helped come up with the initial concepts for Figment and the Dreamfinder, as well as the Journey Into Imagination attraction, and also helped develop some of Disney's most memorable characters, attractions, pavilions, and even complete theme parks, including being the creative leader of Tokyo DisneySea. We also talk about Epcot, the Studios and so much more. I would later come to interview his brother, Tim Kirk about his work at Imagineering, specifically at the Disney-MGM Studios, but that is another trip to the archives for another day. Kevin and Matt complete their two-part series on the never-built Muppet Studios Land at Disney-MGM Studios, including restaurants and attractions.
Matt and Kevin look at the tragic passing of Jim Henson and how that reshaped the planned Muppet Studios Land at the Disney-MGM Studios in the early 1990s.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster: Starring Aerosmith opened in July of 1999 at Disney's Hollywood Studios (called Disney-MGM Studios at the time) and has remained one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World and arguably one of the most popular roller coasters at the Disney Parks. This attraction has a fascinating history and came to life at a time when Disney was looking to add more thrill rides to Walt Disney World. This Disney roller coaster was the first in the United States to be built with a synchronized on-board ride soundtrack (featuring hit songs from the popular classic rock band, Aerosmith) and the first to include inversions (upside down maneuvers) at Walt Disney World. In this podcast episode, we discuss the history of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, including its design, story, music, and Imagineering, along with some fun facts, details, and audio recordings of the attraction. We also briefly discuss Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Avec Aerosmith (extinct attraction) at the Walt Disney Studios Park at the Disneyland Paris Resort.
