How does social media challenge or reinforce our own biases? On this episode, we sat down with the University of Pennsylvania's Desmond Upton Patton to discuss his research on social media and adolescence. We talk about the many roles social media has for young people and how they have taken advantage of social media as a storytelling mechanism and a tool for navigating safety. We discuss how social media can also be reductionist, reinforce negative stereotypes, and even perpetuate misinformation, revealing the flaws in AI and similar technologies. Desmond talks us through all these facets of social media in relation to his work and challenges us to think about what it would look like to recognize social media as increasingly integrated into our reality. We were so excited to have Dr. Desmond Upton Patton with us for this episode. Desmond is not only a great friend, but an incredible scholar. As a social worker, researcher, and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Desmond has published groundbreaking research on the linkage between grief and aggressive behavior on social media platforms, and now his research focuses on the topics such AI, social media, machine learning, empathy, and race with the goal to create unbiased and culturally conscious algorithms. In addition, he serves on the research and safety advisory boards of Twitter, Spotify, and TikTok, and he has been chosen as part of the inaugural cohort of Obama Foundation Leaders for his research. Now, he is the director for the research initiative known as SAFELab at the Annenberg School for Communication, a project we will hear more about in this episode! We also had with us songwriters Alissa Abeler and Hannah Smith from the Americana duo The Daily Fare. They shared amazing insights not just on their own experiences with social media, but also on songwriting and the storytelling process. We were so thankful to have this group of people in discussion with us, and we hope you enjoy the episode! Thomas Balmès and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his beautiful new film Sing Me A Song, Bhutan and the West, universal stories, our addiction to technology and realities that you cannot write.TrailerSynopsis:Sing Me a Song is a new documentary feature by acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Balmès(Babies, Happiness). With Sing Me a Song, Balmès returns to one of the subjects of his award-winning Happiness.A nuanced portrait of a young man’s introduction to the world, the film follows now-teenaged Peyangki, who lives and studies in a picturesque monastery deep in the mountains of Bhutan.Several years have passed since TV and the Internet have been allowed into the remote country, and now the structured daily rituals of candle lighting and recitation of prayers compete with the powerful lure of smartphones. Privately, Peyangki is passionate about love songs and forms a relationship with a young singer on WeChat named Ugyen, from the capital city of Thimphu.Disinterested in study and often reprimanded by his masters, he sells medicinal mushrooms to make enough money to leave monastery life in search of “the one he dreams of night and day.” Unexpected and profound, Sing Me a Song provides an eye-opening lens on the effects of technology and challenges us to reassess our own perceptions of relatedness and self-worth in an age of unparalleled connectivity.About Thomas:Thomas Balmès (Director; Producer; Cinematographer) has been working as an independent director and producer of influential nonfiction films since 1992.His film Babies surveys one year in the life of four babies — in Mongolia, Namibia, SanFrancisco, and Tokyo — and was released theatrically worldwide in 2010 to much success. His next film Happiness was made in Bhutan, and introduced audiences to Peyangki and his village of Laya. Happiness premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Documentary World Cinema Cinematography Award. His initial projects included studies of filmmakers James Ivory and Michelangelo Antonioni.Mr. Balmès’ first film as director was Bosnia Hotel, about U.N. Kenyan peacekeepers in Bosnia. This was followed by Maharajah Burger, Mad Cows, and Holy Cows; the latter took up the Indian perspective on the mad cow crisis. His, The Gospel According to the Papuans, following the conversion to Christianity of a Papuan Chief, was honored with the Silver Spire Award at the 2000 San Francisco International Film Festival; he would return to Papua for Waiting for Jesus.Mr. Balmès’ 2004 feature A Decent Factory centered on a Nokia executive whoinspects a mobile phone factory in China and was screened at more than 50 film festivals and received honors including a Europa Award. He next directed Damages, a.k.a. How Much Is Your Life Worth? filmed at a Connecticut law firm specializing in personal injury, for worldwide broadcast.Mr. Balmès has conducted lectures and master classes in France; and abroad at Brown University, the Watson Institute, and the Lisbon International Film Festival.Image Copyright and Credit: Thomas Balmès and Gravitas VenturesF2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. Next in our mixtape series comes with Prairie, the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Marc Jacobs who has prepared a mix to submerge our minds into a semi-awake state, where senses are heightened and we experience sound and reality in a different way. Jacobs, with his Prairie output, has recently published a new album in Denovali Records "And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me", his second release on the experimental German label. With a sound that some have acquainted to a space between Bohren & der Club of Gore and Sunn O))), his releases are infused of a vivid cinematographic narrative. Sonic landscapes provided by layers of synths and instruments that remind us of the passing of time and the persistence of memory. "And the bird said", Jacobs says, "was inspired by the silence of the birds, the tone between a mother and her daughter, the Sandsnipe twins, constant wailing sirens... the memory of a Vangelis track". Composed in several locations from urban in the city, or in his studio Les Lacs and in the mountains of the French Cévennes, the producer integrates his various recording locations into his sound design, creating this ample and revealing sound, resembling the sights of vast fields in the early morning hours, when life is awaking surrounded by a layer of unknown mystery yet to be unveiled. Jacobs also works as a music consultant and as a curator of experimental and electronic music for various venues, events and festivals, among which the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (Bozar) and he is also the founder of Le Bureau Electronique, a platform dedicated to the promotion of leftfield music and arts in Belgium. This mixtape consists of various approaches to sound and music, where the artist has combined the different forms of production of the tracks in order to create a feeling of a narcotic or hypnagogic state: "It is a state I particularly enjoy, it enables surprising auditory connections and stimulates the imagination. I have chosen the tracks according to the connections they created with one another, like a cadavre-exquis – or how you can fall into a cascade of images or ideas just before you start dreaming". Tracklist (in order of appearance) Plastikman, Robert Ashley, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mt Gemini, Aymeric de Tapol, Francisco Lopez, Simon Fisher Turner, Lionel Marchetti, Kate Carr, Lawrence English, Niedowierzanie, Ernest Hoood

The Sing Me a Story Foundation believes that the greatest gift in the world is the gift of giving. If we can give the children we serve the opportunity to give the one thing they all have regardless of circumstance, their imagination, and bring those imaginations to some of the largest microphones we can find in an effort to remind us all that we have more in common than we often attribute to ourselves, we will have accomplished our goal. We believe our world is a world destined to be united and if Sing Me a Story can be one small part of that - we will have achieved our mission. How It Works1. Children involved with organizations serving children in need are given the opportunity to write and illustrate stories about ANYTHING they want.2. Those stories are then distributed to our SMAS Songwriters through our website,www.SingMeAStory.org, who view the stories, turn them into songs based on the ideas presented in the stories, record them and send them back to the children by uploading them back to the site.3. SMAS Jukebox Campaigns are then created for each song uploaded in an effort to raise money for the Partnering Organizations and Sing Me a Story. When fans contribute to the SMAS Jukebox Campaigns, they receive the song as an Mp3 with their donation receipt.Giving Tuesday campaign featuring 8-year-old Jeremiah, Stephen Kellogg + Tyrone Wells (songwriters), Numotion (sponsor), United Cerebral Palsy of Central Florida (nonprofit partner)$65 provides a song for a child in need.Learn more: www.singmeastory.org

Talking Through Sing Me a Song Sing Me a Song is the title of the next episode of The Walking Dead, also known as season 7 episode 7, and the penultimate for this year. It is also another way that Negan shows how he is a prick because he makes Carl, our little serial killer in training, do just that. While the seemingly budding bromance between Carl and Negan was the main focus of this episode, we also checked in with Rick and Aaron, Spencer and Father Gabriel, Rosita and Eugene, and Michonne. It seems that our characters are going off in all different directions, both literally and figuratively while they all try to cope with their new Savior situation. Michonne and Rosita are both hell-bent on getting themselves killed…er, I mean going after Negan. While Michonne doesn't need anyone's help so no one really knows what she is up to, Rosita drags Eugene into her plan by bullying him into making her a bullet. He tries to save her from herself by talking her out of it, but she is having none of that. Spencer is off being a whiny baby and actually makes Father Gabriel wish he hadn't come along with him, so much so that he chooses to walk back home. You know when F.G. is fed up with you, it's bad. Meanwhile, Rick and Aaron are actually being useful by getting something interesting. Now that was a long episode! Whew, it seems like a lot went on this episode, but since it was 90 minutes…not really. While this episode wasn't my favorite by a long shot, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. There were only a few scenes I enjoyed; however, Brian enjoyed this episode way more than I did. To varying degrees, we were both a little disappointed by it, even though his rating doesn't really reflect that. There is almost always room for improvement. Unless you're talking about the season 5 premiere. That one seems to be the gold standard for both of us. Gareth really was scary, but it was mostly because of his indifference to human life. For this episode, though, there is nothing scarier than seeing Negan holding a baby. Send in your feedback! It's your last chance to give us feedback for the year, and we really want to know what you think about this first half of season 7. We seem to be getting less and less each episode, and we don't know if it's because less of you are watching, or less of you are listening to us. In any case, let us know by sending us some audio feedback! It's our favorite! Please send in your feedback for Season 7 Episode 8, titled Hearts Still Beating by Tuesday 6 PM/5 PM Central. Ratings are up!!! Sing Me a Song got a 4.98 in the 18-49 demographic, with 10.481 million viewers, which is up just a bit from 4.90 and 10.403 million viewers last week.

And then, TEEN WOLF! Timothy: Yes, it's true. While we wait for THE WALKING DEAD to come back, we're going to give Mr. Adair a chance to talk about the show he's been watching and often reviewing since it began, as we turn our attention to the final season of TEEN WOLF. Dustin: It's going to be great. But that's in a couple weeks. Right now, we hope you'll enjoy this week's Zombpocalypse Now!

Sing Me a Song is the title of the next episode of The Walking Dead, also known as season 7 episode 7, and the penultimate for this year. It is also another way that Negan shows his prickishness because he makes Carl, our little serial killer in training, do just that. Michonne and Rosita are both hell bent on getting themselves killed...er, I mean going after Negan.

While Michonne doesn’t need anyone’s help so no one really knows what she is up to, Rosita drags Eugene into her plan by bullying him into making her a bullet. He tries to save her from herself by talking her out of it, but she is having none of that. Spencer is off being a whiny baby and actually makes Father Gabriel wish he hadn’t come along with him, so much so that he chooses to walk back home. You know when F.G. is fed up with you, it’s bad. Meanwhile, Rick and Aaron are actually being useful by getting something interesting. Now that was a long episode! Whew, it seems like a lot went on this episode, but since it was 90 minutes…not really. While this episode wasn’t my favorite by a long shot, it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. There were only a few scenes I enjoyed; however, Brian enjoyed this episode way more than I did. To varying degrees, we were both a little disappointed by it, even though his rating doesn’t really reflect that. There is almost always room for improvement. Unless you’re talking about the season 5 premiere. That one seems to be the gold standard for both of us. Gareth really was scary, but it was mostly because of his indifference to human life. For this episode, though, there is nothing scarier than seeing Negan holding a baby. Send in your feedback! It’s your last chance to give us feedback for the year, and we really want to know what you think about this first half of season 7. We seem to be getting less and less each episode, and we don’t know if it’s because less of you are watching, or less of you are listening to us. In any case, let us know by sending us some audio feedback! It’s our favorite!

On this week's episode of We Talk Dead on the HMC we review The Walking Dead Season 7, Ep 707 "Sing Me a Song". After Jesus tucks and rolls out of the moving truck, Carl stays on board to venture behind enemy lines into the Saviors compound. After some some savior ass kicking, he is greeted by his ol pal Negan. Unfortunately the giant factory he's about to tour ain't Wonkaland and he gets a lot more than he bargained for -- and we get a song (thanks Carl, you are our Sunshine too). Meanwhile back at Alexandria, Rick and Aaron have gone out foraging for Negan's tribute, Rosita browbeats Eugene into making her a single bullet, Gabriel shows his loyalty to Rick as Spencer tries to recruit him for a coup and Michonne is busy building a walker road block to trap a savior. Lots going on to the lead up of the midseason finale including getting to see Carl's empty eye socket and Negan cradle Judith on the porch. Will Rick and the Gang ever be able to beat Negan? Will we ever get to see that cool tiger again? Will the gang ever be back together!? Listen up and stay tuned for our midseason finale coverage. Liz and Lindi break down the intense episode and what it means for poor Carl. Could Jesus have been the one that slipped the note to Daryl? How much will Rick flip his lid when he sees Negan holding Judith? What exactly is Michonne planning to do? And when the f*** are we going to see Carol again? Talking about Swear… Without Swearing! Swear means we only have two more weeks of The Walking Dead this year, but it also means all Tara all the time. The sixth episode of season 7 caught us up on what happened to Tara and Heath after that fateful night at the Savior outpost. When they left, our gang still had no idea what was to come, but when Tara returned, she returned to a post-Negan world where everyone is a nail, and Lucille is the hammer. Fortunately, we didn’t have too much to be said about this episode, except feeling sad for Tara when she feels sad. Otherwise, she was a much needed bright ray of sunshine. One of my favorite things throughout this episode was Tara’s particular brand of funny. She is such a fun and funny character, I don’t think we really realized how much we missed her until she came back. Her optimism is infectious and by the way, what a difference lipstick makes! Yowza! Alanna Masterson is such an amazing actress who is also stunningly beautiful. But back to the lecture at hand. Oceanside, or the Amazons, as I call them, seems like a great place to settle down, but unfortunately, they have a shoot first ask questions later kinda policy. My question is, why did Cyndie decide to make an exception for Tara, again and again? Because of this, I think Tara feels obligated to swear to Cyndie that she won’t tell anyone, even the people she lives with, about the Amazons, but how long will that promise hold out? Also, what in heck happened to Heath? Ratings were down Swear got a 4.90 in the 18-49 demographic, with 10.403 million viewers. That’s down from last week‘s 5.17 and 10.996 million viewers. Law Blank wanted to be an artist for as long as he can remember. He was creating from the age of 2 and art was a part of his daily life. Law worked in mediums like chalk, pencil and even dirt as a child, finding his voice and honing his craft through the years. Today, Law enjoys success as an artist and balances it all with a busy day job and family. In this chat with Law, Aimee J. explores his passion, purpose, and dedication to art, as well as how he found success as an artist shown in galleries around the world. TWEET: How to turn your passion into a career, on today’s episode of #ChasingDreams Chasing your dreams in spite of negativity around you. When you find your purpose and passion, it’s likely that you’ll hear a lot of negative voices around you. Law discusses how he dealt with negativity and how it actually inspired him to pursue his dreams rather than give up on them. He shares why the negativity didn’t dissuade him at all from chasing his dream of being an artist and why he gained strength from it instead. Law also discusses the value of constructive criticism and why it’s important to share feedback with others, even if it’s not in your field. He gives insight into how he uses constructive criticism with his own children to help them find their own voice. Finding a mentor and using inspiration to hone your craft. For Law, inspiration was all around him growing up. He explains how his mother’s talent and creativity inspired him. Law’s mother was very creative, and he enjoyed watching her draw and paint as a child. It was hugely inspiring to him and influenced him greatly throughout his childhood. Law also discusses how he found his biggest inspiration not in a person, but in a place: the library. He shares how he would spend all of his free time in the library and why it inspired him so much. TWEET: The value of finding #inspiration from a young age as you chase your #dreams Networking to grow your business and share your art. As he got older, Law knew he needed to find a way to get his art into galleries. And so, at the age of 18, Law had his first show in a local gallery after spending time taking his portfolio to various galleries. He discusses how the process of submitting a portfolio changes as you get older and gain more experience, and why he still doesn’t have an agent. Law also talks about what it was like to have his art shown internationally and why it’s a must to understand how to network if you want to grow your business. He discusses the importance of having a website, but the reality that the real work comes with networking. Law offers a tip for fellow artists: LinkedIn is an awesome place to network with other artists and those with a passion for art. Finding balance in a very busy life. As they close out their chat, Aimee and Law discuss the difficulty of finding balance in a very busy life. Law talks about how he balances it all: a full time day job, being on the board of Sing Me a Story Foundation, running stART Talking Art, his art, and - most importantly - his family. He also shares some advice for fellow dream chasers: Nothing should keep you from pursuing your dreams; you’re the only barrier to making them come true. It’s clear Law has passionately pursued his dreams for most of his life and it’s inspiring to hear, with such honesty, the struggles and obstacles he’s faced along the way.
