The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that investigations are underway following the death of Bacelio Alphonso on December 30, 2024, at Leeuwkop Prison in Johannesburg. Speaking on this program yesterday, Alphonso's family called for justice, expressing frustration over unanswered questions surrounding his death. The Correctional Services Department has confirmed the death of Danish national, Peter Frederiksen at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in the Free State. Fredericks was serving two life terms at the facility after being found guilty of rape and conspiracy to commit murder. An inmate, accused of stabbing Janusz Walus, the killer of anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani, has reportedly not been formally charged. This despite the incident happening over a year ago. The accused inmate, Mandla Madonsela, a former member of uMkhonto we Sizwe and sergeant in the South African Air Force reportedly stabbed Walus' just two days before his controversial release on parole in November 2022. The Department of Correctional Services says it has a handle on the Diphtheria outbreak at the Pollsmoor Correctional facility in Cape Town. The national commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, says an epidemiological investigation is underway to determine how and where the disease was contracted, which includes contact tracing. Mangaung prison officials have been accused of attempting to cover up the death of an inmate in April, last month. The infamous privately-run Mangaung maximum prison In Bloemfontein recently gained notoriety following the escape of convicted Facebook rapist and murderer Thabo Bester, reportedly with the aid of prison officials. Bester and his accomplices have since been arrested and are facing trial. Officials at the prison have now been accused of trying to conceal a recent death of an inmate to reportedly avoid further negative attention. The Department of Correctional Services says it has decided to terminate its contract with the Bloemfontein Correctional Center. The centre is contracted to operate the controversial Mangaung Correctional Centre, from which convicted rapist and murderer, rapist Thabo Bester escape last May. The department of Correctional Services says following the escape of SEVEN detainees from the Grahamstown Correctional Facility on Tuesday, investigations are continuing to ensure the re-arrest of the 6 still at large. The department says the seven are facing a range of charges including rhino poaching and attempted murder.  It is alleged that at 04:00 vam on Tuesday morning, an officer arrived for work at the facility and became suspicious when she noticed that the light was on in one of the holding units. Friday officially marked the end of former president Jacob Zuma's prison sentence for being in contempt of court. The Constitutional Court sentenced him to 15 months in jail in its judgment on 29 June last year and he was admitted on 8 July 2021. He was subsequently placed on medical parole on 5 September 2021. If Zuma had not been granted medical parole, Friday 7 October would have been his prison release date. "Medical parole placement meant that Mr Zuma was to serve the remainder of his sentence under Kranskop Community Corrections. Essentially, Mr Zuma complied with his conditions for medical parole as set out during his placement," said correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo. "All administrative processes have now been concluded and the sentence expiry date marks the end of him serving his sentence under community corrections."

Prison authorities say Jailed former South African President Jacob Zuma has undergone unspecified surgery and remains in hospital with more operations planned.Zuma was sent to a hospital outside for observation on August 6, days before the start of a corruption trial he has thus far avoided.Prison spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo says Mr Zuma underwent a surgical procedure on Saturday, 14 August 2021, with other procedures scheduled for the coming days.Last week, a high court postponed his corruption trial to September 9 after his hospitalisation.

The South African Sentence and Awaiting Trial Prisoners Organisation (SASAPO) has confirmed that prisoners have embarked on a hunger strike, following the alleged contravention of their rights during the lockdown. The organisation says the inmates are very frustrated, with certain rules and fear that their safety have been compromised. This comes after, some officials at East London Correctional Centre tested positive for the COVID19. The Judge in the rape trial of controversial Nigerian pastor -- Timothy Omotoso -- has refused to recuse himself from the case, following a request by the defence for him to do so. Judge Mandela Makaula has agreed to postpone the case till Thursday, to allow the defence time to prepare its argument for an appeal. Omotoso and two co-accused are on trial in the Port Elizabeth High Court, and are facing 97 sex related charges. Meanwhile, Omotoso remains in custody and his two co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sithohave have been granted bail, supporters of Cherly Zondi and other witnesses who are yet to testify have alleged that Omotoso is receiving preferential treatment while in custody. Two prisoners escaped from the Grootvlei Correctional Centre, outside Bloemfontein on Sunday. The offenders apparently fled through the prison's pig farm. One has been re-arrested. The Department of Correctional Services says it is working closely with SAPS to apprehend the other prisoner who is still on the run. The escape comes days after 6 dangerous prisoners escaped from the Kutama Sinthumule maximum prison in Limpopo after wardens abandoned their posts over pension payouts.
