KZN-based artist Ricollin Moodley is a force to be reckoned with. The 24-year-old started his journey by creating art using materials such as old lipsticks, stale food colouring and charcoal. He is a self-taught artist with humble beginnings. Even so, his talent has been appreciated globally. Moodley has sold his artwork to people in the Netherlands, China and Australia. The Shelley Beach resident joined Stacey and J Sbu in studio today to discuss his journey into the world of art. Speaking to Stacey and J Sbu about his journey, Ricollin shared how he took up art as a means to earn money to purchase food for his family. "I took a pencil and found paper, went to the beach and started sketching," he explained. There, he met his first customer who commissioned a piece from him. Ricollin is known for his unique use of lipstick, he explained that this began after digging in bins. He was unable to afford art supplies and took the 'risk' of using lipstick. "Little did I know, I could actually create pieces of art with this," he shared.

Asokan Moodley is leading Nedbank's drive into the world of AI – and it is already starting to have a meaningful impact on productivity in the bank. In this episode of TechCentral's TCS+, Moodley – Nedbank Group Technology's head of end user and communication experience, infrastructure and operations – unpacks what the bank is doing with Copilot for Microsoft 365 and the lessons learnt so far from the deployment of the technology. Nedbank, which is one of the first organisations in South Africa to deploy Copilot for Microsoft 365, has made the technology available to select employees, including senior management, ahead of a planned wider deployment. In the interview, Moodley discusses: • Why Nedbank decided to be a relatively early adopter of Copilot for Microsoft 365; • Which employees the technology has been deployed to initially and why they were chosen; • The business challenges the bank is hoping the technology will address; • The important lessons learnt so far, and how other companies should be approaching their deployments; • The potential pitfalls of using advanced AI tools in a highly regulated industry like banking; • The security concerns, and how Nedbank is addressing these; and • How the bank helped employees embrace AI tools in their day-to-day work, and the feedback they have provided regarding their use of the technology. Moodley also shares his views on whether AI tools, including Copilot for Microsoft 365, provide a competitive edge in both the short and the long term. If your organisation is thinking of deploying AI technology to its employees – and especially if it's considering Copilot for Microsoft 365 – this is a conversation you shouldn't miss, especially as Moodley shares his views on how leaders in other organisations who have embarked on a similar journey should approach this. It's Wednesday, March 6th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British police admit their restrictions against Christian preaching were wrong Authorities in the United Kingdom agreed to a settlement with a Christian leader in a free speech case. Dia Moodley is a pastor in Bristol, England and has evangelized on the streets for years. In 2021, police issued him a warning notice. It banned him from criticizing other religions and worldviews. With the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, Moodley challenged the notice. Recently, the Avon & Sommerset Police Force finally acknowledged their restrictions were “disproportionate.” Moodley said, “It isn't for the police to decide which religions or worldviews can be free from criticism. When I preach, I am committed to speaking about the Good News of Christianity in love, grace, and truth–but that doesn't mean that I will never say something that others may disagree with.” Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Religious people had less depression during COVID lockdowns Speaking of the United Kingdom, a new study from the University of Cambridge found religious people suffered the least during COVID-19 lockdowns. The survey covered nearly 4,000 people in the U.K. It found religious people had far lower rates of depression during lockdowns than people who said they did not believe in God. The study noted, “If one were to ask if religious people cope better in a crisis, an examination of the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic would suggest that the answer is yes. … The findings of this study may then also have policy implications for future pandemics in terms of what to do about closures of places of worship during a pandemic.” France is first country to enshrine abortion as a “right” France is the first country in the world to enshrine abortion as a so-called “right” in its constitution.  Parliament members voted 780-72 in favor of the measure on Monday. The killing of unborn babies has been legal in France since 1975. The recent push for abortion as a constitutional right came in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the U.S. In Psalm 94:20-21, David asks, “Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with You? They gather together against the life of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.” Super Tuesday: Donald Trump close to claiming GOP nomination Here in America, 15 states held their primary elections yesterday collectively called Super Tuesday. The Worldview will break down the presidential results and ballot measures on Thursday's newscast. Fox News reports that former President Donald Trump is likely to capture the lion's share of the 854 Republican delegates up for grabs as he moves significantly closer to locking up his party's presidential nomination over his last remaining rival: Nikki Haley. Midlothian Texas becomes 68th sanctuary city in America Meanwhile in Texas, the city of Midlothian became the latest sanctuary city for the unborn. Last Tuesday, the City Council of Midlothian outlawed abortion in a 5-2 vote. It's the 51st city in Texas and the 68th in the U.S. to pass such a measure. Mayor Justin Coffman said, “I am proud to be a part of passing an ordinance in the city of Midlothian to become a sanctuary city for the unborn. I believe in affirming life and protecting the health and well-being of our current and future citizens from the womb to the tomb.” Tennessee protects God-honoring wedding officiants from homosexual agenda People in Tennessee cannot be forced to perform a marriage against their conscience under a new law. The state's Republican Governor Bill Lee signed the legislation last Wednesday.  The law states, “A person shall not be required to solemnize a marriage if the person has an objection to solemnizing the marriage based on the person's conscience or religious beliefs.”  Americans trust nurses and dentists more and journalists and clergy less Gallup released their 2023 Honesty and Ethics poll. The survey found American's ratings of nearly every profession is down. The most trusted professionals are nurses, veterinarians, engineers, and dentists. Among those least trusted are advertisers, car salespeople, senators, and members of Congress.  Labor union leaders were the only ones to see a slight increase in trust. Professions that saw the greatest decrease in trust include medical doctors, pharmacists, police officers, bankers, and journalists. Clergy members also saw a large decrease in trust.  20-foot Northern Green Anaconda: The largest snake worldwide And finally, scientists have documented the largest snake species ever discovered. They are calling it the northern green anaconda after finding specimens in the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. Professor Bryan Fry led the group of scientists from The University of Queensland. They found the giant anaconda with the help of the Indigenous Huaorani people while filming for National Geographic. Fry told USA Today the invitation from the tribe was “one of only a handful granted since the tribe's first contact in 1958.”  A recent video shows a Dutch biologist, named Freek Vonk, swimming next to one of the massive anacondas. It was 20 feet long and over 400 pounds! The Power Operations & Leadership Association of Southern Africa (Polasa) believes the famine-then-feast profile of Eskom's execution plan for the roll-out of new transmission infrastructure will starve an already embattled domestic industry to the point where it will be unable to make the manufacturing and skills investments required to participate in the later steep rise in grid expenditure. Chairperson Sagren Moodley tells Engineering News that the back-end-loaded nature of the execution plan for the ten-year Transmission Development Plan (TDP) to 2032 is of "great concern" to the industry as only 12% of the 14 218 km of powerlines proposed for construction under the plan has been earmarked for implementation during the first five-year window. From financial year 2023 to 2027, only 1 675 km of line is planned for construction, he notes, leaving 88% for the second five-year period from 2028 to 2032. "This feast-and-famine approach is unsustainable and will cripple many in the industry during the famine years and increase costs and project slippages during the feast years. "This is an untenable environment for both the industry and for Eskom's own internal resource management," Moodley says. Polasa is, thus, calling for an urgent collaborative intervention between Eskom, government and the industry to find ways to "flatten" the demand profile by creating more consistent demand in the current five-year execution window. The association, which has manufacturers, suppliers, consultants and professionals in the transmission and distribution value chain as members, describes the initial ramp-up as too slow, with the execution plan currently even showing a ramp-down from 326 km last year to only 165 km in the current financial year. "The obvious problem is that many companies throughout the value chain might not be able to survive the famine years, leaving Eskom with a smaller pool of suppliers in the latter years," Moodley adds. This point is also made in the recent Transmission and Distribution Manufacturing Value Chain report released by the Localisation Support Fund. The lack of workflow also threatens the survival of those startup companies currently participating in Eskom's incubation programme, which has been launched to support the transformation of the sector. "Whilst this is commendable and supported, the concern is that there is not enough work in the next five years to sustain the main contractors and sub-contractors let alone keep the incubation companies sustainably busy." Polasa is equally concerned that Eskom is not meeting even its modest roll-out targets, with the pace at which tenders are being released lagging not only the TDP, but the implementation timeframes communicated by Eskom. "We should have seen the projects in this first five-year window already in the market. This is not the case and therefore casts doubt as to whether we are going to successfully reach this 1 675 km milestone." As a consequence, more kilometres could well be pushed into the second five-year window, steepening the demand profile further in the latter years and potentially leaving gigawatts of much-needed new generation capacity unable to connect to the grid. Such a scenario could also trigger a vicious cycle, whereby local manufacturing and contractor capacity is lost to company closures, leaving the market dependent on foreign enterprises and skills once the programme truly accelerates. "As South Africans, we can ill afford the further de-industrialisation of a battered South African economy. . .The nature of the power line manufacturing and construction sectors is that we are a mass employer of both skilled and unskilled people [and] can make a significant contribution to employment." Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has confirmed that inadequate transmission spending poses a threat to government's plan to end loadshedding permanently and has also flagged the prospect of opening the market to private sector participatio...

David Scott is joined by Dia Moodley of Spirit of Life Church in Bristol. Moodley is the main preacher at this church and, together with his congregation, has been engaging with the public on the streets to discuss the big issues of belief and lack of belief, morality and how to view the world. Complaints from those who do not share a Christian worldview—including transgender and LBGTQIA2S+ people, some adherents of the Islamic faith, and some angry atheists—were received by Avon and Somerset Police. The police response, notwithstanding the lawfulness of the activity, was to engage in a year-long evidence-gathering process during dialogue with Moodley and then to serve him with a warning notice (evangelism ban) under the Public Order Act 1986, ostensibly for his own protection and that of of his congregation. In other words, the aggressive and threatening behaviour of those offended was used as justification for preventing street preaching—an entirely lawful activity. The police, it seems, became allies of the offended. Listen to what transpired: an ongoing fight by Dia Moodley and his church to be able to speak in the public square and engage in peaceful discussion about important matters. He is standing up for the Gospel, and also for critical thinking and the freedom to question any philosophy, belief or idea.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) believes South Africans can take heart from the recent arrest of several former Transnet and Gupta loyalists. Just in the last week, the National Prosecuting Authority's Investigating Directorate, together with the Hawks, effected the arrests of five high-profile individuals linked to allegations of state capture at parastatal Transnet. The accused include former Transnet chief executive Siyabonga Gama, former Transnet acting CFO Garry Pita, former Transnet Treasurer Phetolo Ramosebudi, former Trillian Capital executive Daniel Roy, and Regiments Capital shareholder Eric Wood. The five accused, arrested on 27 May, join Kuben Moodley, a Gupta-fixer and the director of Albatime, in the dock on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act. Moodley, however, was arrested in September 2021 already. The accused are all out on bail on various amounts of between R25 000 and R250 000 and are due back in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on 13 July 2022. On this episode of Free Range, Mike Livermore speaks with Deshen Moodley, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Co-Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research at the University of Cape Town. Moodley's work focuses on machine learning and probabilistic modeling systems. Moodley begins by remembering his first encounter with computers, and how that spurred a lifelong interest in programming and, eventually, led him, first, to a career in the private sector before transitioning to an academic career. Moodley compares the differing aims of industry and academia, in addition to pointing out the way in which the structure of a country's academic system influences the production of knowledge and the interaction between academia and industry (:55 – 8:53). Moodley then explains what machine learning is, where it fits within the broader field of artificial intelligence, and, after providing a basic introduction to Bayesian inference, offers examples of knowledge representation systems that the public might be familiar with in their daily life. Moodley then explains how these systems can be used to increase efficiency in areas like medical diagnoses and the subsequent relaying of that information to the patient (9:00 – 26:19). The conversation then delves into Bayesian networks, what they are, and how they are used in artificial intelligence research. Moodley describes how AI, using machine learning, might go about diagnosing an illness, before emphasizing the benefits of a hybrid system that combines Bayesian and knowledge-based systems (26:30 – 45:33). Shifting to one of Moodley's key concerns about AI, the conversation touches on whether machine learning has increased access to knowledge. Moodley argues that fear of autonomous AI is one of the major hurdles to the field, with the result that society has been slow to incorporate these systems (45:45 – 55:22). The conversation concludes with a thought-provoking hypothetical (featuring cameos from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie!) illustrating the difference between normative- and performance-based approaches to artificial intelligence (45:45 – 1:08:40). Professor Michael Livermore is the Edward F. Howrey Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law. He is also the Director of the Program in Law, Communities and the Environment (PLACE), an interdisciplinary program based at UVA Law that examines the intersection of legal, environmental, and social concerns.
