This episode was recorded in Reno, Nevada, during the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference. The panel is reviewing a presentation given by Dr. Rick Grant, who was unable to be on the podcast. The presentation was based on the idea that crowding is a subclinical presence. If you manage it with people and resources, a dairy can do very well. But if something happens in that crowded situation, like a disease or heat stress, it can tip performance over the edge. Evaluating time budgets for cows can allow for the identification of places to improve. Beds are vitally important. If a cow doesn't have a bed due to crowding then she's not lying down, chewing her cud, which is what allows her to be as efficient as possible. (3:19)Jason thinks about time budgets as a tool for managing stress. Jim agrees and notes that crowding is part of every cow's day, but we can manage to minimize that time in most instances. Jason and Jim talk about some of their approaches to evaluating crowding when they work with a dairy, and where pain points are often located. (5:57)Jason liked Dr. Grant's takeaway message that the cow doesn't necessarily care she's overcrowded as long as she has a bed she doesn't have to fight for and room at the feed bunk she doesn't have to fight for. He describes a very successful client who is overcrowded, but everything else is managed well. All other stressors have been removed, so the only stressor remaining is the overcrowding. But when additional stressors compound crowding, then dairies experience issues. He adds there is a huge opportunity for error when feeding to slick bunks in an overcrowding situation. (16:15)Jim talks about different measures of efficiency. Is it milk per cow, milk per free stall, milk per parlor stall, or milk per pen? He thinks the real answer is “it depends,” and the answer might be different for each dairy. Jason notes that the bank wants to see assets on a balance sheet, and the cows are the assets. (19:24)The group discusses geographical differences in overcrowding. Jim's observations show crowding increases as one moves east in the US. Tom agrees and notes 20-30% of the available stalls are in his part of the world. Overcrowded cows eat faster, and this impacts rumen efficiency, probably leading to lower de novo fatty acid synthesis and overall lower components. The panel talks about whether or not there is such a thing as an “overcrowding ration.”(20:59)The panel relays some real-world examples of crowding where dairies would cull cows to decrease milk production, but production would remain the same because the cows were now less crowded. They talk more about other management strategies that need to be on point if a dairy is going to overcrowd. (27:50)The panel wraps up with their take-home thoughts for dairy producers and nutritionists. Jim and Jason share their contact information with the audience. Overcrowded and understaffed-- that's what critics say has been the state of affairs at Washington's Reagan National Airport -- and Wednesday night it turned deadly. But in the wake of the tragic crash between an army chopper and that American Airlines jet, we've learned of a number of near misses between helicopters and planes. And for family members of those lost, the grief is only beginning to set in. And among the losses are two 11-year-olds who became best friends doing what they loved most - competing in skating events. Plus, Health Secretary nominee RFK Jr. makes no bones about the fact that he was a heroin addict for 14 years. But questions are being raised about some small pouches he was popping in his mouth during his confirmation hearing. And gold medal Olympic track star Gabby Thomas is afraid she's being stalked. Thomas says a group of strange men has been following her when she travels, showing up at airports all over the country. And it turns out she's not the only star athlete saying she's being targeted. Picture this: A quiet New Year's Eve at home, swapping the chaos of clubbing for a cozy night in with fireworks and "90 Day Fiancé." That's how we kicked off our latest episode, packed with laughter and nostalgia as we navigated everything from political musings to the delightful chaos of our everyday lives. We speculated on potential election candidates, tossing around names like Gavin Newsom and Vivek Ramaswamy, and even had a chuckle over the show "Designated Survivor" to imagine the political whirlwind that is succession. Politics aside, we spared no critique for Jaguar's controversial rebranding, reminiscing about the brand's high-performance days while sharing a hilarious tale of BMW i8 ownership that included a memorable run-in with the law. Our conversation took another turn as we switched gears from the high-energy days of clubbing to the serene yet curious world of drones and government conspiracies. Amidst the memories of wild nights out and the shifts in our personal priorities, we found ourselves laughing about East Coast drone conspiracies. With the new year in full swing, we tackled health and fitness resolutions, humorously recounting the gym rush that inevitably happens every January. Overcrowded equipment, gym etiquette fumbles, and the funny reality of midnight bathroom trips peppered our lively discussion, as we explored the balance of staying fit amidst life's unpredictable challenges. The episode rounded out with a spirited debate on electric versus gas-powered vehicles, touching on the environmental and economic puzzles of oil dependency. We reminisced about the joy of gas station stops and even pondered the mysteries of electricity's origins. Our personal anecdotes continued with dog training escapades and the ongoing battle between indulgence and frugality in our spending habits. [SEGMENT 1-1] Glad to be back I'm glad to be back. We took our son on another trip to prepare him for life in the real world. During the trip he thanked us, and said that his eyes were opened to how great we have it in America. Where we visited, people make 50 CENTS an hour. He simply couldn't fathom it. Just so you know, we were able to go, because we fly almost free. It costs us $30 each to fly out of the country. And we stayed almost for free. That being said, we still overspent because that's how other countries treat Americans. They tax us. I rented a car for $10 per day. But I HAD to get insurance that costs $250 for the duration of the visit, as a tax they put on Americans. No joke. I did this, because a taxi ride of about 10 miles cost $50. We asked what it would cost to go from our hotel to a location about 12 miles away, and we were told $80 EACH WAY. Anyway, we never expected to have to rent a car, but did. The good news is my son was impacted, and that's the reason for these trips. It's his senior year, and we will be empty-nesters soon. Last chance to imprint. I'm back, and we have so much to look forward to… First of all, YOU'RE WELCOME to all the Leftists out there. I and all of the people who listen to me saved your sorry butts from yourselves. Democrats are starting to realize how stupid Kamala Harris is. Did you see her video. It was bad. They paid over $1B to try to get that alcoholic elected. I guess they figured, “At least she's not totally brain-dead!” Andrew Gillum and Kamala Harris. Remember Gillum? [SEGMENT 1-2] What I Missed The Times is reporting that President-Elect Donald J. Trump has prepared an Executive Order for his First Day in Office, which would see the Medical Discharge of over 15,000 Transgender Servicemembers from the U.S. Military, as well as a Ban on Transgender Individuals from joining any Branch of the Armed Forces. Reginald Denny is FREE. The guy who stopped a crazy man in the NYC subway system… Now you can rest assured that for the foreseeable future, things will be much better. America is a safer place, and in fact the WORLD is a safer place. [SEGMENT 1-3] Democrats backing away from stupid policies 1 80% of asylum-seekers went on vacation to their countries of origin… [X] SB – Democrat Congressman publicly wants to stop illegals A New York City Democrat Councilman, Robert Holden is now publicly calling to repeal the City's sanctuary status so President Trump can deport the enormous amounts of illegals currently occupying the city. "I love Tom Homan, the new border czar." "We're shielding [illegals]... The governors, the Democratic governors, and the mayors of these sanctuary cities are shielding criminals and terrorists." - Councilman Robert Holden. Bravo, sir, for having the balls to defy the DNC. I hope they don't start investigating and indicting you for going against their narratives. I bet there are many more Dems just like him who can't come out and say what they know is true because they fear political retribution. https://www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2024/11/hochul-ill-be-first-call-ice-deport-immigrants-accused-crimes/401333/ As President-elect Donald Trump promises mass deportations of millions of immigrants across the country, Gov. Kathy Hochul indicated on Tuesday that New York state will cooperate to at least some extent with federal immigration authorities. Hochul said that while she supports legal immigrants, including asylum-seekers, she would be “the first one” to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport undocumented immigrants who break the law. The governor would not say what steps, if any, the state would take to protect the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who are not recent arrivals seeking asylum. During an unrelated press conference in Queens, Hochul drew a distinction between immigrants with “legal papers” and those “who commit crimes or are known to be criminals before they arrived here.” “Someone breaks the law, I'll be the first one to call up ICE and say, ‘Get them out of here,'” Hochul said when asked how she would respond to Trump's plans for mass deportations and whether New York would be a sanctuary state under her leadership. “When those are identified, I'll be the first one to help get rid of them,” she added. “I don't want them here. I don't want anybody terrorizing my citizens.” The governor said that she would allow the asylum process to play out for eligible, law-abiding recent arrivals, and she said that she wants both asylum-seekers and those with Temporary Protected Status to receive authorization to work in the state. “Those who come here legally, we want to get them jobs,” Hochul said, adding that she supports keeping TPS for migrants who currently have it. Hochul has previously expressed a willingness to deport immigrants accused of crimes. She said in February that a number of migrants who were accused of assaulting police officers in Times Square should be deported, even before their cases went to trial. At least one migrant who was initially arrested in connection with the assault was ultimately found to have nothing to do with the incident. [SEGMENT 1-4] Democrats backing away from stupidity 2 The Democrats have always been tough guys when they're running the show. Why? Because that's how cowards operate. They rig the system, cheat openly, and then brag about their so-called “mandates.” But when their policies start crumbling under scrutiny. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston took what he thought would be a bold stance against the Trump administration on illegal immigration. He essentially challenged Team Trump to a fight, "Come get me, Bro!" But look at illegal immigration by the numbers. [X] SB – Mike Johnston on standing up for illegals Negotiate with reasonable people. Restricting entry at the border The National Picture: An Open Border Free-for-All Illegal immigration isn't just a line item on the evening news—it's a crisis that impacts every corner of American society. At the national level, Biden's open-border policies have resulted in unprecedented numbers of migrants flooding the U.S. In fiscal year 2023, more than 2.7 million migrants were encountered at the southern border. Add to that the untold number who slipped through, and it's clear we're dealing with numbers that rival the population of some states. The costs? Immense. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), illegal immigration costs American taxpayers $182 billion annually—a 30% increase since Biden took office. These costs hit everything: education, healthcare, law enforcement, and welfare programs meant for citizens. Colorado's Burden: A State Straining Under the Weight Colorado has felt the brunt of this influx. Sanctuary policies, like those proudly championed by Leftist officials in Denver, have turned the state into a magnet for migrants. The result? Overcrowded shelters, skyrocketing costs for social services, and increased pressure on local law enforcement. Denver alone spent over $20 million on migrant services in 2023—and that's just the official tab. Colorado voters aren't thrilled. In 2016, Donald Trump carried much of the rural state precisely because voters were fed up with policies that prioritized illegal immigrants over citizens. Leftists may call these folks “deplorables,” but they're the ones footing the bill for sanctuary policies they never agreed to. Denver: Sanctuary City Shenanigans Denver's self-inflicted wounds on illegal immigration are a case study in Leftist lunacy. Formerly proud of its sanctuary status, the city is Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Neha's project, centered around dogs and the issue of overcrowded shelters, led her to create a nonprofit called Pawprints. The nonprofit focuses on raising awareness about the importance of microchipping and GPS tracking collars to prevent dogs from getting lost and ending up in shelters. Neha shared her personal connection to the project, including her experience rescuing her dog Aggie, who was saved from euthanasia at an overcrowded shelter. She discussed the educational materials she created, which include information on properly registering microchips and options for GPS tracking collars. One of the biggest challenges Neha faced was her fear of public speaking, which she overcame by preparing thoroughly and diving into the experience. She credited her mom, project advisor Kelly Carey, and council advisor Marty Hall for their support throughout the project. Neha also reflected on her growth through the project, particularly in public speaking and time management, as she balanced her project with school and other activities. She encouraged future Girl Scouts to pursue their Gold Award despite the challenges, emphasizing the rewarding nature of the process. Neha shared her future plans, including her goal to become a dentist, and her hopes for the continuation of her nonprofit. We wrapped up with a fun question about how she makes her s'mores, revealing her preference for slightly burnt marshmallows. More About Neha: After adopting her senior dog from a shelter, Neha understood the severity of overcrowding in animal shelters. While most people focus on pet adoption as a solution to overcrowding, she wanted to address the problem of people losing their pets, which often end up in shelters until they are found. Neha identified microchips and GPS collars as an easy but underutilized solution for lost pets. She spoke at shelters and created pamphlets, social media accounts, and a website to share information on GPS collars and encourage pet owners to purchase one for their pets. Neha has been in Girl Scouts since she was a Daisy in Kindergarten and plans to continue until she graduates from high school this upcoming school year. Through school, she is involved in the speech and debate team as well as the varsity bowling team. Outside of school, Neha enjoys participating in Krav Maga and playing the piano. After she graduates, she plans to pursue a career in dentistry. Key Takeaways from this episode: Addressing Root Causes: Neha's Gold Award project focused on addressing the root causes of overcrowded shelters by promoting the use of microchips and GPS tracking collars to prevent dogs from getting lost and ending up in shelters. Personal Connection: Neha's personal connection to the project stemmed from her love for dogs, particularly her own rescue dog, Aggie, who was saved from being euthanized at an overcrowded shelter. Overcoming Challenges: Neha faced and overcame her fear of public speaking through her project, which ultimately helped her grow and become more confident in speaking engagements. The catchment zone for Prince of Wales Collegiate includes Prince of Wales, Leary's Brook Junior High, Larkhall Academy and St. Andrew's Elementary. But grade levels in the zone have been reconfigured to stop overcrowding. Parents say this isn't enough, and it's the tip of the iceberg of problems within the schools. Amanda Power has two children attending Larkhall Academy, and another who will start next year. She spoke to the CBC's Katherine Crummey.
On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Louise Perry. A British journalist known for her commentary on feminism and gender issues, Perry is the author of the book The Case Against the Sexual Revolution. She also contributes to The New Statesman, UnHerd, and The Daily Mail, and has a Substack at Maiden Mother Matriarch. Perry is a graduate of University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, with a degree in anthropology. Perry and Razib first discuss Britain's current housing crisis, the reasons and possible solutions. Though the Office for National Statistics estimates the UK's population at 67.1 million, Perry believes that the true number is likely higher because individuals who are present illegally or have a “gray” status are unlikely to respond. But even this population would make the UK over eight times more densely populated than the US, with England being 13 times denser. In fact, England's population density is similar to India's. Perry also brings up the reality of massive immigration flows over the last few years; where before 2020 net migration was around ~200,000 per year, since 2021 the figure has been closer to ~500,000. Additionally, many of these immigrants are placed in “social housing,” subsidized or owned by the government. Perry also points out that the legal regulations in Britain stipulate that about 30% of new developments be allocated for social housing, which incentivizes incumbent homeowners to block construction. Additionally, the rate of population growth is much higher than the British construction industry's capacity to keep up with the theoretical demand. The UK does not produce enough bricks, nor does it have the labor pool of homebuilders. The conversation continues to a broader discussion of the ennui in modern British society. Perry asserts that a major problem driving the housing crisis is that the UK has only one major city, London, and any professional who wants to settle in a more affordable region must also take a major salary cut. Setting aside London, and its economic engines of finance and commerce, Perry characterizes the rest of the UK as more akin to a developing Eastern Europe nation. She also believes that the next decade will see a mass flight of the upper-middle-class, the primary tax base of the state. Perry herself has Australian citizenship through her parents (who immigrated from Australia to the UK), while her husband has an American mother. Her situation is common to many upper-middle-class Britons, who have connections to Canada, the US, New Zealand and Australia. Perry believes this is one reason the British political culture is not reforming itself: so many have in the back of their head that they can jump ship if it starts sinking. Ultimately, her thesis is that British openness and intellectual curiosity make the national character a poor seedbed for nationalism, and it may be inevitable that the UK is caught up and tossed about in a vortex of globalization. If you have a sibling with autism, your future child's risk for an autism diagnosis is increased by a factor of 2 to 3.5×. Orchid's whole genome embryo reports can help mitigate your child's risk by screening for over 200 genetic variants definitively linked to autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Discuss your situation with a genetics expert.

Through this thought-provoking discussion, you'll reconsider the value we place on those who dedicate their lives to educating our kids.As we critically examine the current state of the world, we discuss the impacts of greed and the challenges faced within the education system.
