Send us a textOscar Pistorius was a legend.  Having had both of his legs removed below the knee, at the age of only 11 months old due to a congenital illness that he had been born with, Oscar was able to compete in both the Paralympics as well as the Olympic Games. He was a hero in his home country, South Africa.  When Oscar met model Reeva Steenkamp, the two fell hard for one another, and had only been together for a short period of time, then the unthinkable happened.According to Oscar, the well known, sky high, crime rate in South Africa, had him constantly on edge, and ready to defend his own, at any given moment, and because he was at a disadvantage due to his amputations, he relied heavily on his firearm.  and that was why, on Valentines Day in 2013, according to him, he accidentally shot down his girlfriend, who had gotten up in the middle of the night to use the washroom.  Oscar swears that it was a horrific accident, but the volatile relationship that he and Reeva shared in their short time together told a different story.....  was it a tragic accident, or did Oscar Pistorius kill his girlfriend in a jealous rage? This is the Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp case. Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! Hello Wonderful Readers,I felt a lot of resistance writing this piece. I'm very tired right now. Most of you reading this are not in high school, and any of my younger cousins or friends who might be are probably just scrolling on TikTok. You can see how my inner critic is already working against me! That's why it's important to me to challenge myself. I'm determined to write and publish this piece for you anyway.I'm stealing the idea of this list from Austin Kleon, who stole it from Debbie Millman. I listened to his story about it on Millman's podcast this week. Here, I've cobbled together the first six things I wish I had known when I was graduating from high school. That year was 2013, and a lot has changed since then. Instagram existed at the time, but it wasn't widely used. This was years before TikTok, when the first major sex scandal about Jimmy Savile came out, and Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter, had just murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.I was finishing up my A-Levels at my incredibly fancy and academically rigorous “secondary school,” Westminster School in London. I had gotten rejected from all the top universities I applied to and was on my way to taking a gap year. I had no idea what I was doing with my life (spoiler, I still have no idea what I am doing now). So, without further ado, this is what I wish I had known at that time.1. When Oscar Pistorius murdered his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, he was one of the most famous athletes in the world. A double amputee and an Olympian – he was dubbed “Bladerunner” – his trial made global headlines. He was released from prison in South Africa earlier this month having served over half his sentence. At his 2014 trial he claimed that in the early hours of St Valentine's Day, he had fired his gun thinking there was intruder in his home. The facts, however, proved he murdered the 29-year-old Steenkamp, a model and TV personality who had only been dating Pistorius for four months. Her death added to South Africa's staggeringly high rates of femicide and the levels of gender-based violence in the country have continued to climb. Bill Corcoran, who covered the former athlete's trial in 2014 for The Irish Times, explains the reaction in South Africa to his release on parole. Presented by Bernice Harrison. South African Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius, known for his inspirational journey as a double-amputee athlete, has been released on parole after serving nearly nine years of his 13-year and five-month prison sentence for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day in 2013.    The South African Department of Corrections made the announcement early Friday morning, confirming Pistorius' new status as a parolee. Pistorius was secretly moved from the Atteridgeville Correctional Center prison in Pretoria to a parole office before being released to his family. However, the exact time and location of his release were not disclosed.    Pistorius, who became eligible for early release after serving at least half his sentence and received parole approval in November, is expected to live initially at his uncle's mansion in an upscale Pretoria suburb. A police van and private security vehicles were seen outside the residence, highlighting the efforts to maintain privacy.    The Department of Corrections emphasized that Pistorius' parole details, including the time of release, would not be publicized to protect him from media attention that has followed him since the tragic incident more than a decade ago.    Under strict parole conditions, Pistorius will have limitations on leaving his home, a prohibition on alcohol consumption, mandatory participation in anger management and violence against women programs, and community service. He will also meet regularly with parole officials and be subject to unannounced visits. Additionally, Pistorius is banned from speaking to the media until the end of his sentence, and any breach of parole conditions could result in his return to jail.    South Africa does not employ monitoring devices like ankle bracelets for paroled offenders, but Pistorius will be closely monitored by a Department of Corrections official. He must inform the official of any significant life changes, such as seeking employment or moving to a different residence.    Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June Steenkamp, expressed her acceptance of Pistorius' parole, acknowledging it as part of South African law. She reflected on the absence of true justice, stating, "Has there been justice for Reeva? Has Oscar served enough time? There can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back, and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back."    June Steenkamp also reiterated her commitment to the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, dedicated to continuing her daughter's legacy.    Oscar Pistorius has maintained that he shot Reeva Steenkamp by mistake, believing she was an intruder in his bathroom. However, prosecutors argued that he intentionally killed his girlfriend during a late-night argument.    Before the tragic incident, Pistorius was celebrated as an inspiring role model, overcoming his disability to become a champion sprinter who competed in the 2012 London Olympics.    The reaction to Pistorius' parole has been relatively subdued in South Africa, in contrast to the initial public outrage that followed the killing. Advocates against violence towards women expressed hope for Pistorius' rehabilitation. Themba Masango, the secretary-general of Not In My Name International, commented, "We can only wish and hope Oscar Pistorius will come out a better human being. We tend to forget that there is a possibility where somebody can be rehabilitated."    As Oscar Pistorius embarks on his parole journey, South Africa will closely watch his adherence to the strict conditions imposed on him, while the tragic memory of Reeva Steenkamp remains in the hearts of many.

Reeva Steenkamp, a 29 year old South African paralegal who graduated top of her class and also had a successful career as a model, was murdered in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013, shot multiple times by her then partner Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius, who at the time was an internationally known professional sprinter and national hero, claimed it was an accident, that he thought he had been defending himself against an intruder breaking into his home. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide with a term of only five years in prison and a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction. That verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa who convicted him of murder and increased Pistorius' prison term to 13 years and five months on appeal by the state. Now, to the shock and dismay of Reeva's family and loved ones, after only serving half of his sentence, Oscar Pistorius is going to be released on parole with a number of conditions. We revisit this case (which we covered in depth back in June 2016) and the complex circumstances surrounding Pistorius sentencing, Pistorius' contradicting statements as well as new details about what may have happened that terrible night. In 2014 Audrey Brown told the dramatic story of the trial of the athlete Oscar Pistorius After becoming a Paralympics champion, Oscar Pistorius rose to fame as the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics. He became a hero to millions – until the fateful night when he shot dead his girlfriend, the model Reeva Steenkamp. His trial featured high tension and dramatic twists and turns. In often highly emotional testimony, Pistorius tried to convince the court that he shot Reeva Steenkamp by mistake, thinking she was a burglar. Prosecuting barrister Gerrie Nel subjected the athlete to merciless cross-examination as he attempted to prove that Pistorius was a man with a love of guns and an uncontrolled temper. This is the story of a trial which gripped the attention of South Africa and the wider world.
