Build Your Online Audience with Janet Murray
[418] How long does it take to create an online course?

Build Your Online Audience with Janet Murray

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2020 46:23

Would you love to launch an online course - but you're not sure how long it will take or you may be wondering how long it will take you to create the resources and get it online? There are so many factors to consider. For example: How well do you know your subject? (and do you already have content you can repurpose?)  How long will your course be? (i.e. how many modules/lessons) Are you are planning to do everything yourself (or outsource some tasks) Will your classes be live or pre-recorded? Have you created an online course before?  Do you have previous teaching experience?  This podcast episode (which you can also read as a blog post) will take you through the key things you need to consider to estimate how long it will take you to create your course. {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. Scroll down to the bottom to read the show notes including all the links mentioned in this episode.} 1. How well do you know your subject? The first and most important decision you need to make about your course is the topic. Choose a topic you know well and/or have already created content on as this can vastly reduce the amount of time needed to create your course - and get it to market. For example, my first course, Soulful PR for Starters was a beginners course on how to do your own PR. I had already created a cluster of blog posts on this topic. For example: What kind of ideas are journalists interested in? How to write a press release for a journalist How to write an effective pitch for a journalist How to find journalists' contact details What to do if a journalist says ‘no' to your pitch So I was able to use the blog posts I had already created (which were tried and tested ideas) to quickly create an outline for my course. Had I been starting from scratch it could have taken HOURS of research.   2. How long will your online course be? This will have the biggest impact on your time as the longer your course, the longer it will take you to create the materials. According to Teachable, a starter course might be just five – 20 lessons and cover a smaller aspect of a wider topic e.g. How to create a high-converting lead magnet or it may cover it at a beginner's level of detail e.g. Soulful PR for Starters. A typical price to sell a starter course might be $50 – $200. A flagship course like Build Your Online Audience might be 20 – 100 lessons and cover all aspects of a topic in lots of depth with plenty of additional resources and maybe a community aspect to the programme too. It could sell for $200 – $2000+. Bonus tip If it's your first course, try a starter course as part of a funnel. A tripwire. Then you can measure how long things take you.   3. Are you are planning to do everything yourself (or outsource some tasks) As a minimum, most online courses contain: Video tutorials Workbooks/printables (e.g. templates, checklists, cheat sheets, swipe files) Slides Some course creators also provide audio versions of their courses (which is a great idea for accessibility) and transcripts. This means that at a very minimum you will need to: Plan the lessons Record/edit video tutorials Create slides and printables If you are planning to do it all yourself, you may need to factor in time to learn about video editing, design. However, I really recommend using a professional designer and perhaps even an audio editor. I'd recommend outsourcing if you can. Bonus tip: Don't forget to factor in time learning new skills or costs for outsourcing.   4. Will your classes be live or pre-recorded? It's typically quicker to create live content (as you have to do it all in one ‘take') but depending on how perfect you want your content to be - you may want to edit your content afterwards and cut out any unnecessary bits. But see point 6 - it can be quite nerve-wracking teaching online (or teaching at all if you haven't done it before). For a masterclass that's 90 mins - 2 hours long it takes me: 6 hours to prepare for a class. Plus a day to create a workbook with help from my designer. If you're a confident, competent online teacher, go for it live.   5. Have you created an online course before? As with anything in life, you tend to get quicker. When I first started creating online courses, it could sometimes take me up to three hours to create an online class. Now I do it all in one take. I don't even edit out mistakes unless they are REALLY big. While I don't advocate creating your course upfront before knowing if anyone will buy your course. Creating one session to see how long it takes you might be an idea. OR try a masterclass or webinar first before you launch a course to see how long it will take you. Bonus tip: Start with a masterclass or webinar first before you launch a course. Make sure you presell before you create.   6. Are you experienced in teaching? I am - so it takes less time but what about you? If you've never taught anything before it will take you longer than someone who is experienced in teaching. Make sure you research the different learning styles that people have - some people learn visually others from listening or reading. It's important to mix up your styles so that you reach different people at different times. Bonus tip: Do some research on different learning styles on how people learn etc. Think about the accessibility of your course.   7. How to sell your course (without outlaying too much cost) Make sure you presell your course before you create it. This way you'll know if it's got legs. The worse that can happen is that you have to refund people as you haven't had enough interest. If you haven't got a big online audience to sell to - you might consider starting small with a webinar or masterclass to build interest from and then build your online audience. Ready to know more? Episode Celebration: Powerful Business Advice from 13 Successful Online Entrepreneurs

The SIGRUN Show

Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I have met many smart, savvy, and inspirational online entrepreneurs. These powerhouse online business owners have truly motivated me and made a significant impact on my life and journey in entrepreneurship. To celebrate our 200th episode of The Sigrun Show - as well as achieving 100,000 organic downloads without paid promotion, I reached out to some of my favorite guests to share their best business advice for new online entrepreneurs. I asked them to think back to where their life and business was five years ago to gain inspiration and ideas about what advice they would give to a new online business owner. Here's what they said…   Step Outside Your Comfort Zone Kate Erickson, the host of Kate's Take podcast and Implementer at Entrepreneurs On Fire, was the first guest on the show. After seeing her keynote talk at Social Media Marketing World in 2017 - where she shared how she started her podcast with simple equipment and reading her blog posts - Her speech created a lightbulb moment for me and I was inspired to finally take the leap and start The Sigrun Show. For our 200th episode celebration, Kate shares how stepping out of her comfort zone has been the key to creating the success she desired to advance her career and business. Kate Erickson's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Step outside of your comfort zone.”   Surround Yourself with the Right People Mark Schaefer was also a significant inspiration in my podcasting journey after I saw him speak at Social Media Marketing World in 2017. His speech inspired another lightbulb moment… to launch my podcast with 100 episodes in 100 days and, of course, I wanted him to be one of the amazing guests on my show! In episode 5, he talked about how to become known in your industry in as little as 30 months or less and covered some of the topics that he wrote about in his book Known, which launched last year. In this episode, he shares an important piece of advice on how to build a successful business that he learned from one of his past mentors. Mark Schaefer's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Surround yourself with the right people. Have the courage to rely on people other than yourself and be smart enough to know the possibilities to ask the right questions.”   Don't Wait! Take Inspired Action. My third guest on the show was Elena Herdieckerhoff in episode 7 and she discussed how she achieved an unbelievable 1 million views on her TEDx Talk. Elena is a dear friend of mine as well as a mastermind buddy in a mastermind group I've been a part of for over four years. She has successfully built and sold a skincare brand, and is currently the founder of Red Dot Stage. In this episode, she shares how she learned that believing that you are good enough and taking inspired action is the key to building a successful, profitable, and sellable online business. Elena Herdieckerhoff's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “If you know there is one big game-changer that will put your business on the map, decide today that you are good enough and are able to make it happen. Don't wait for the ideal time or opportunity. Simply make your game changer your priority. Take inspired action and you will make it happen sooner than you think.”   Keep Learning & Implementing In episode 9, I interviewed Natalie Sisson, who was the fourth powerhouse entrepreneur on The Sigrun Show, where she explained why after seven years of running her business, the Suitcase Entrepreneur, she decided to take a sabbatical. Natalie was one of the first online entrepreneurs I started following five or six years ago and was a huge inspiration to me while starting my online business. Since her sabbatical, she has rebranded her business under her own name and has a book coming out soon! Natalie Sisson's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Keep learning. Keep implementing and continue to be a leading learner.”   Stop Trying to Be Perfect While I was preparing to launch my show, I reached out to my community and asked who they would like to hear as a guest on the show. Zach Spuckler was one of the first - and most requested - names that people asked for. Zach is best known as the creator of the 5-Day Challenge course and the host of the Heart, Soul, Hustle podcast. On episode 15, he shared how to use a challenge to sell your high-end program. He is a wizard when it comes to implementing launch and funnel strategies and creative marketing ideas, and he continues to inspire me and others to try new things and keep innovating. Zach Spuckler's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Stop trying to be perfect. Stop thinking that the first draft is going to be everything and more. Get something out there! If you don't put an offer out into the world, people can't pay you and if you don't get paid - you can't run a business.”   Write an Exit Strategy Today! My dear friend and mastermind buddy, Shazzie, has successfully built a multiple 7-figure business that she later sold. Since one of my 2017 business goals was to grow my business to become a 7-figure business, I decided to feature her on my podcast. On episode 19, she shares how she turned her passion and business idea into a million-dollar company and today, she explains why it's important for online entrepreneurs to create an exit strategy sooner rather than later. Shazzie's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Write an exit strategy today. Now. It's a magical spell that creates the brightest possible future for yourself and your loved ones.”   Attention is the Online Currency Jill Stanton and her husband Josh are the founders and creators of the Screw the Nine To Five Facebook community and membership site where they help unsatisfied and aspiring entrepreneurs build the life and business of their dreams through actionable strategies, simple how-to, resources and tools, and so much more. Jill previously joined me on episode 29 where she shared the secret behind gaining raving fans and high retention rates. Her top business advice is for entrepreneurs to truly understand why building your reputation and putting yourself out there is critical to building a successful online business. Jill Stanton's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Attention is the currency online. When you have it - everything becomes so much easier. So put yourself out there. Spread the word!”   Look at Your Big Picture Goals Sarah Grear is a phenomenal copywriter, copy conversion expert, and the creative director and owner of Creative Custom Writing, Inc. I have been friends with Sarah for several years so when I was preparing to launch SOMBA for the first time, it was a no-brainer that I should work with her to create a compelling sales page. After I launched The Sigrun Show, I reached out to Sarah to be a guest on the show to share her insight and tips for online entrepreneurs on how to grow their businesses from six to seven figures by honing their copywriting skills. To celebrate our 200th episode, Sarah explains why new entrepreneurs need to look at the bigger picture goals when creating their online packages and setting their prices instead of simply settling with lower priced projects. Sarah Grear's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Look at the big picture goals when you make decisions about the packaging or what you are offering to your clients so you can make those decisions to grow in your business.”   Success Lies in Consistency Over the last 200 episodes, I have rarely featured any single guest more than once - Lorraine Dallmeier has officially broken a new record for The Sigrun Show. Including today's episode, she has been featured as a guest expert in three episodes. Lorraine first joined me on the show in episode 81, where she discussed how she bought an online business four years ago and grew it from earning low five figures to over seven figures per year. In episode 180, she shared the 5 types of copycats and a 10 step action plan on how to deal with copycats. In this episode, she shares why the key to building a highly successful and profitable business lies in taking consistent action each day. Lorraine Dallmeier's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “The key to success lies in consistency. Don't ever stop what you are doing; just keep going every day because you'll constantly build up your business further.”   Start Small and Scale Up When I attended Chris Ducker's Youpreneur Summit in London last November, I had the opportunity to see Janet Murray speak on the power of PR. Janet is the host of The Janet Murray Show and the founder of Soulful PR. I had the pleasure of interviewing her in episode 117 where she shares how entrepreneurs can get free PR for their online business as well as how they can use stories unrelated to their business to promote their brand. So, it's not a surprise that her key piece of advice for online entrepreneurs is related to building and growing your audience. Janet Murray's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Start small and scale up as you're building your audience.”   Focus Your Message April Perry is the owner of LearnDoBecome.com where she teaches thousands of entrepreneurs, companies, and individuals around the world the system she created to overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed. In episode 150, she shared how she used to feel overwhelmed and how she overcame that feeling by creating systems, routines, and building what she calls a “command center.” As many entrepreneurs often feel overwhelmed in running their businesses while taking care of their families, that episode has been one of the most popular episodes of the show. Now, she shares how she learned the power behind having a focused message in your sales copy and marketing strategy can significantly impact the growth of your business. April Perry's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “When you have a focused message and a clear way people can hire you to solve a pain point, you can grow a business and really help a lot of people in the process.”   Be Open to New Opportunities Tiffany Lee Bymaster had a fascinating career as a makeup artist and stylist, working with some amazing actors on the set of television shows and movies. She was also a talented lifestyle blogger and today is widely recognized as Coach Glitter. Tiffany joined me in episode 172 where she talked about how entrepreneurs should become comfortable with taking imperfect actions to achieve their business goals. She is one of the best affiliate marketers I know and is a true inspiration for thousands of online entrepreneurs. In this episode, she shares why it's important for entrepreneurs to be open to new possibilities and opportunities that life presents to us on a daily basis. Tiffany Lee Bymaster's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Be open to the possibilities of things. You can't even predict where your life may take you next. Keep your mind, heart, and soul open to all of the opportunities that life will present to you on a daily basis.”   Be a Leading Learner When I started my journey into building an online business, Nathalie Lussier was one of the first online entrepreneurs I noticed and began following, so when I met up with her at Social Media Marketing World 2018 - I asked her to be a guest on my show to share her story. Nathalie is the creator of the 30-Day List Building Challenge. In episode 194, she shares how this well-known challenge has impacted her business and how creating the ultimate challenge can help you build your online business. When I reached out to her to participate in our 200th episode celebration and share one piece of key advice she would tell a new entrepreneur - she did not hesitate, nor disappoint. Nathalie Lussier's Advice for Online Entrepreneurs: “Keep learning. Keep implementing and continue to be a leading learner.”   Let's Celebrate! Launching The Sigrun Show in August 2017 was a dream come true and now reaching 200 episodes is a very proud moment. Welcome to episode 181, this weeks episode is focussed on an interview with Janet Murray from Soulful PR. I appeared on her podcast recently and since then she has been achieving great things with LinkedIn so I thought you would all like to hear from her. But first… Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week Bumblebizz is now live! LinkedIn to launch Talent Insights in 2018 Janet Murray spent 17 years as a freelance journalist before setting up her Soulful PR business. She now focusses on helping people to ‘pitch’ into the media to get better exposure for their business. Key things I took from this episode; Traditional PR is not enough anymore Four areas of PR you should be paying attention to on a regular basis; Publishing content on your website Email marketing / newsletter Social media posting and activity Press coverage (show the results on your website) To build relationship with journalists you have to read the papers, show patience and work at getting to know them. Be aware of what is going on and when a story breaks that is relevant to your specialism, contact relevant journalists via Twitter or call them. They are always looking for stories so you are potentially being really helpful. Make a list of relevant journalists on Twitter and LinkedIn (mainly Twitter) - find them via a Google search/alerts. #journorequest on Twitter can be helpful Media enquiry services such as Response source, help a reporter out and source bottle Journalists like to call (for speed) so put your telephone number in your profile (summary not headline) and Twitter bio Make sure you have relatively recent Articles and videos in your profile so that a journalist or producer can see that you can write and appear comfortable in front of a camera. Clarity in your headline is key….journalists needs to see quickly exactly what your niche is (arguably this is true for everyone, not just journalists) Journalists always ask “Why do people need to hear this now?” ‘Everything is potentially content’ If others care about it then it will probably fly on LinkedIn. They met at Tropical think tank in the Philippines and now they are ready to sit down to podcast 12 months in the making!   Who is Janet Murray   Janet Murray is the founder of soulful PR specializing in helping small business owners sculpt and pitch their ideas and stories to the media. She’s a freelance writer/editor who runs a successful Paid web group called Soulful PR Studio. Alongside a booming podcast and masterfully written blog, Janet is always on the go. I must also mention she has an amazing book called Your Press Release is Breaking my Heart. Let's not forget her Facebook group Soulful PR going almost 10,000 strong.   "I guess the most important thing about my story is that I teach PR but I have never worked in PR," Janet explains.   From The Guardian to The Independent and The National posts, Janet has spent the last 16 years freelance writing and editing for some of the biggest publications in the UK. Never mind the handfuls of magazines; Janet has been there and edited that!   One thing that Janet learned early on in her freelance years is that bad pitchers are everywhere. She began to grow sick of a number of bad pitch emails filling her daily inbox; Hard working people throwing their money into PR firms that just don't get it.   She was inspired to take a stand. It was time for a change, and Janet decides to set out to teach others how to get noticed.   Janet runs the event Your Year in PR, where she takes 8 national journalists and roughly 80 small business owners, stuffs them in a room, and teachers. They learn what it is that consumers look for in a pitch and what sets a good pitch apart from a bad one. Janet says, “You don't need a big budget or fancy PR firm to get top Notch media coverage. The importance of standing out.   Khierstyn cleverly asked which pitches Janet had heard over the years that she still remembers being the worst. Janet skillfully responds that she really can’t recall any terrible pitches. Instead, the ones that that stand out she said are the good ones. Here are the 3 criteria to use to get noticed!   First, you need to show evidence that you actually read or listen to a publication. If it's radio or the newspapers take the time to do your basic research. Journalists have such a small area they can fill and endless crap to sift through.   Second, you must have really strong header/subject. It is important to be direct and to the point, Journalists work fast and read even faster. Avoid trying to be witty or the use of puns in your header. You want to keep the body of the text short and to the point as well adding strong visuals or audio clips. Janet gives us the tip of trying to picture yourself in the shoes of the journalist you are trying to reach.   " In Journalism, we have a term called the 10-word top line." Janet explains that this means if you can't summarize your story in 10 words or less you are not ready for launch.   Third, knowing the different types of media content is very important as well.   News: Reporting on something new that is happening. Opinion article: Published in a newspaper or magazine, that reflects the author's opinion about the subject. Personal article: A story that leads to the point, can be the reason for why you made what you are pitching.   Janet tells us that, rather than starting with your story, tailor each outreach to every different publication.   What advice would you give to the first time entrepreneur trying to find their pitch?   " First off! Anyone that owns a business can get media coverage."   One tool that reigns supreme is HARO, Help A Reporter Out, a place where journalists go to find stories to write about.   Janet takes the time to recant a story of a current client that is working on a app for people with food intolerance. Now, the App is not quite finished but that has not stopped her client from being all over media publications for the last year. Even if you can't get the coverage you want, get any coverage you can! By the time you are ready to launch you have made the bridges and started your following.   Be where the journalists are. There are always events going on; Find a way to be apart of them, set up booths, ask for coffee meetings. You need to find ways of getting into the public eye.   Above all else don't write a press release! You are basically saying you have already sent this story to every other publication you could find. Journalists want a scoop, tailor, tailor, tailor every email you send. Continue listing as Janet teaches you some simple steps to follow when tailoring your pitches.   Episode Outline   Introduction: Pitch Perfect; How to Get Media Coverage at Any Stage   [02:25] Who is Janet Murray [13:12] The importance of standing out [23:00] BackerKit [24:00] What advice do you have for new business owners   Resources and Sponsor Tropical Think tank Janet’s book: Your press release is breaking my heart A Soulful PR Studio HARO http://www.janetmurray.co.uk/ Crowdfunding uncut Jan_Murray Twitter Soulful PR Facebook   Sponsor: BackerKit - use the code “uncut” to get 50% off setup services

LinkedInformed Podcast. The LinkedIn Show

Welcome to episode 173, this week it’s just me (no interview) and I want to talk about the controversial but also very important topic of plagiarism.   But before we get to that I need to catch up on some things I wasn’t able to cover last week plus some other articles I saw this week… Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week Hackers catfish tech execs on LinkedIn Putin passes law that will ban VPNs in Russia HOW RUSSIA IS USING LINKEDIN AS A TOOL OF WAR AGAINST ITS U.S. ENEMIES Why LinkedIn will Never Tell You When to Post on LinkedIn You can hear my interview with Janet Murray on the Soulful PR podcast here LinkedIn Updates Think twice before you reply to an InMail with a shortcut ‘No Thanks’! This is very sneaky and I’m not sure it’s been properly thought through by LinkedIn. When you receive an iMail from someone you have the opportunity to reply with 3 shortcut phrases   On the face of it this looks like a time saving convenience feature similar to those inBot responses you see in normal messaging. Beware, it’s not what you think! When your ‘no thanks’ reply is received the other end the sender sees this message So they can’t continue the thread….that makes perfect sense to me but what happens if they try to subsequently send you a new InMail? So you have inadvertently ‘blocked’ this person from ever InMailing you again which could be disastrous for jobseekers and others who don’t wish to cut off communication altogether, it seems absurd to me that LinkedIn don’t make it clear what you are doing!   Long text posts are ‘killing it’ on LinkedIn   I have reported on this before but since then I have tested this further and it is clear that the algorithm that decides how many of your followers will see your post is massively favouring posts with a lot of text and really penalising any posts that include a link (unless it’s a LinkedIn article).   Here is a post I did last week about a news item regarding Sports Direct. As you can see below, this story was widely covered on LinkedIn by individuals and companies but everyone else made the mistake of including a link to the online article. Knowing what I know, I simply took a screenshot of the letter and posted it as an image accompanied with some long text (triggering the ‘see more’. As you can see, the results speak for themselves! As I typed the above post I paused as I wondered if what I was doing was in some way a form of plagiarism. In the end I decided it was OK as the story had been widely covered by many sources in the national press….but that got me thinking about the main subject of this weeks episode! LinkedIn Plagiarism - Is copy & pasting posts OK? This seems to have become an increasing trend on LinkedIn, especially as text only posts have become more popular and successful. Here is a classic example of what I’m talking about. This text only post from Ryan Cummings was phenomenally successful with nearly 40,000 likes and approaching 3000 comments. Those are great numbers but could have been so much more because others decided to copy and paste his post and re-post it on their own feed. I actually found 27 posts like this. This is the most blatant example and is classic plagiarism The majority were like this, I even found someone who had made it into his own LinkedIn Article! And someone who tried to be clever by changing the copy, ever so slightly! And another who just copy & pasted a section Some fool even had the cheek to add their product picture to the copied post! It’s hard to defend these people. They clearly have extremely low ethical standards and will never find success by operating that way……..These losers are annoying but not the ones I’m most concerned about. I also saw plenty of examples like this; Whilst Ryan’s name is shown, it is not a link back to his profile. There were other examples where Ryan is mentioned and linked (@mention) Whilst this is an improvement, is still wrong in my opinion for this simple reason; They are stealing views, Likes and Comments from Ryan! and I think that is totally unacceptable! Every post offers us the opportunity to Like, Comment or Share - using these is quicker and ensures that all credit, views and further engagement belong to the rightful owner. Not everyone however would agree, look at this post from a CIO claiming that this practice is ‘standard behaviour’ across all social media - really? If this is common practice then that would suggest to me that it’s ‘common practice’ to behave unethically, surely that isn’t true for most social media users - is it? Admittedly Bill also makes a good point about unwarranted blocking but his original comment is ludicrous! This topic was also covered  and extensively commented on in a recent post by Simon Chan I agree wholeheartedly with Simon’s comments but who cares what we think. How does it feel to be copied in this way? Well I reached out to Ryan Cummings and asked him for his thoughts and this is what he had to say; “When I first noticed that some people were copy and pasting my post, I was a bit flattered. However, when one particular post began accruing several thousand likes and gained momentum, I then had people commenting on my post saying that they think the story was made up or that I was the one who copied it. LinkedIn can easily determine who the original author was, and I believe they should step in and take down posts/suspend users who do not give proper attribution when posting others' content. So to directly answer your questions: 1. I don't like it, they should cite their sources. Those who don't will be exposed and look like clowns anyway.

EEC 066-Public Relations Does Not Have to Be Difficult Questions: How would you define PR? What should someone do “Today” to get prepared with their PR? What is SoulFul PR? What training do you have available to help someone get started in PR? A: PR is really just about telling stories. -But where most people go wrong is this: they pitch stories they want to tell rather than stories people want to hear. -And here’s another thing: the stories people want to hear are often the ones you least want to tell. Which can mean making yourself vulnerable: to other peoples’ opinions and possibly even their criticism. B: Three things you should do TODAY to get prepared. 1.Create a media calendar (‘on diary’) 2.Set up news alerts (‘off diary’) 3.Get some training C: She believes every business owner can and should do their own PR She explains it through her SoulFul PR and in her newly released book, “Your Press Release is Breaking my Heart” The three principles that underpin Soulful PR (and everything I do in my work) are: Service Sincerity Simplicity TRAINING: Invest in Yourself In person On Line Tailored For You Check out Janet Murray
