Heading to summer camp? Confidence is the most important thing you can pack. Leslie Randolph speaks directly to girls (and their moms) navigating the nerves that come with starting something new, whether it's sleepaway camp or a big life transition. Some girls are counting down the days with excitement. Others feel anxious, unsure, or like they're heading off against their will. All of that is normal, Leslie says, and it's exactly why building self-confidence matters. Leslie breaks down how self-confidence isn't about having zero fear. It's about moving forward with the fear and choosing how you want to show up anyway. She offers mindset shifts to help girls challenge worst-case-scenario thinking and reframe those “what if” worries. Confidence starts by recognizing that you can't control who likes you, but you can decide how you show up, how you treat others, and what kind of camper you want to be. From embracing your interests (even if no one else is into archery!) to staying open to new friendships and new experiences, this episode is a permission slip to be yourself bravely, and without apology. Whether your daughter's headed to camp, starting high school, or trying something new for the first time, Leslie offers a confidence care package for the road ahead! From the military to tech, sales to social media, and now teaching, my career path has been anything but conventional. Along the way, I've learned invaluable lessons that have shaped my ability to reinvent myself time and time again. Here are 10 key lessons I've learned throughout my journey—from Navy cryptologist to sales leader to educator—and how each experience contributed to my ongoing reinvention.Lesson 1: Sometimes the Most Unlikely Beginnings Lead to the Most Rewarding CareersI started my career in the Navy in 1992, where my job as a cryptologist and delivering messages by hand might not have seemed like the perfect foundation for the corporate world. But it taught me how to handle responsibility, work under pressure, and solve problems—all skills that would serve me throughout my career. From living on a Coast Guard base in the San Francisco Bay area to spending a year in Korea teaching English to a young Korean boy, I learned early on that diverse experiences can provide the foundation for something much bigger. The lesson here? Don't underestimate the value of seemingly unrelated experiences. Every chapter adds a layer to your skills, resilience, and perspective, even if it doesn't immediately seem relevant to where you want to go.Lesson 2: Be Open to Opportunities and Embrace the Learning ProcessAfter moving to Milwaukee in 1996, I started college to become a teacher, but I didn't stop there. I also delivered pizzas and became a peer trainer teaching faculty and students about new technology. Those experiences taught me that no matter your role, you can always learn and grow. What I realized is that even early in your career, the opportunities you take can be just as valuable as the degree or job you're aiming for. The key is to be open, ask questions, and be curious about everything around you.Lesson 3: Don't Be Afraid to Take Risks—Even When It Means Leaving CollegeIn 1998, I made a bold decision. I dropped out of college to pursue a “real job” in tech support, which eventually led to my first sales job selling high-speed internet. At the time, the internet wasn't nearly as fast as we now think of it, and there was a lot of skepticism around the promises we made to customers. But I learned that taking risks and stepping outside my comfort zone would be necessary to continue growing. The lesson here? Calculated risk-taking is vital to career growth. Sometimes, leaving the traditional path can open doors to opportunities that might not be on your radar otherwise.Lesson 4: Show Up and Be Ready to Learn—Even When It's HardBy 2000, I had transitioned into a stockbroker role and was working on a trading team. I was also responsible for teaching others how to use our online trading platform. After 9/11, I realized that technology was my true calling, so I transitioned into IT. Within two years, I earned my first management role, and eventually worked my way up to a VP of IT position. The key takeaway? Show up fully, be ready to learn, and always look for ways to add value. This is how you rise through the ranks and start shaping your own career trajectory.Lesson 5: Leadership is About Stepping Up—Even When You're Not Fully ReadyIn 2003, I finished my degree in computer science and took on a leadership role. About a year later, my manager decided to leave, and I was given the opportunity to lead the team. Even though I wasn't entirely prepared, I stepped up and said yes. That decision was pivotal in my career. It taught me that leadership often comes when you least expect it—and when it does, you need to be willing to take that leap of faith.Sometimes, leadership isn't about having all the answers; it's about being willing to step up and figure it out.Lesson 6: Your Experience and Knowledge Are Valuable—Don't Be Afraid to Share ThemIn 2005, I started my blog, sharing lessons I had learned along the way. I was reading books and consuming other blogs, and I wanted to contribute to the broader conversation. It was a humbling experience, but it also taught me that sharing your expertise—even when you're not a household name yet—can make a huge impact. In 2007, I joined David Zinger to write the Slacker Manager blog, co-authoring content on employee engagement and leadership. This experience taught me the power of collaboration and how sharing knowledge publicly can boost your credibility and open doors.Lesson 7: Self-Belief Is the First Step to Reinvention—Everything Else FollowsIn 2010, I decided to leave my corporate job, something I had been contemplating for years. People doubted I was really going to leave, and many thought I would fail. But I printed business cards, started networking as a consultant, and landed several consulting gigs with small businesses. The key lesson? Self-belief is the foundation of reinvention. When you believe in your ability to solve problems and create value, you can step into new opportunities, even if others doubt you or question your decisions. Your belief in yourself is what will propel you forward.Lesson 8: Clarity of Offer is Key to Digital Leadership and Sales SuccessIn 2013, I worked for a Silicon Valley software company and led the social media strategy. We made three major changes to our product's strategy within 18 months, and as a result, our product didn't sell well. Meanwhile, a more established product with a clear, defined space in the market continued to do well. This taught me that clarity is essential. If your audience doesn't understand what you're offering or why they need it, they won't buy. A clear, consistent message is key to success in sales and leadership.Lesson 9: Tenacity and Simplicity Are Keys to Teaching the UnbelievableIn 2015, I returned to the world of speaking and training, teaching salespeople how to leverage social media. At the time, many people were skeptical about social media as a business tool, and it was up to me to show them its value. I had to simplify complex ideas and be persistent in explaining them until others understood. This experience reinforced the lesson that teaching something new or controversial takes tenacity, courage, and the ability to break down complex ideas into simple, actionable steps. Persistence pays off when you're teaching others to see what they can't yet fully grasp.Lesson 10: Flexibility and Hustle Are Essential for Navigating Life's Unexpected TurnsIn 2022, I joined Bamboo HR in Sales Enablement, but by mid-2023, we moved to Ohio, and I had to give up that role. I pivoted again, working as a substitute teacher while I looked for a full-time position in education. What this taught me was that you have to be flexible when life throws curveballs, and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to stay true to your goals. Whether it's working a second job to keep things afloat or stepping into a completely different field, staying adaptable and persistent is key to navigating life's unexpected changes.Happiness Practices with Phil Gerbyshak is a reader-supported publication. From learning to step up as a leader before I felt ready, to teaching and simplifying complex ideas, to staying adaptable and flexible, each lesson has helped me reinvent myself at different stages of my career. The road to reinvention is rarely straight, but if you're willing to embrace these lessons and keep moving forward, you can build a career that's uniquely yours, no matter where you start or where life takes you next. In this episode, we are joined by Tom Hanicak - artist, educator, art therapist, and beyond - to discuss what it means to allow artistic expression to flow through us all. Tom shares his personal journey of not understanding his own creative energies as a child and ultimately finding his way into an art therapy program, in which he was able to harness and connect his passions for creative expression with his deep care for humanity and helping others. Tom goes on to share his personal experiences with allowing the ‘artist in him' to take the wheel and drive in his life, which is something that had been suppressed for so many years as a misunderstood youth and student. S6 E6: Embracing the Journey w/ Meditation Teacher Fez AswatIn the turbulent moments of life when deep questions or difficult experiences can shape our reality, meditation can serve as a vehicle to ground us to explore and feel presence, return to our breath, and is also an opportunity to grapple with the internal conflicts or curiosities that arise. For Alexis, she has been privileged to work with Fez Aswat as a teacher, guide, and friend for about 8 years. Fez Aswat is a meditation teacher and coach for individuals, teams, and organizations. He co-founded the Boston Dharma Collective, bostondharma.org, with his teaching partner Ryan Cunningham, where he teaches online meditation classes and retreats. His Buddhist study and practice are based on the Theravadin and Mahayana traditions, guiding his teaching to help students integrate practice into our modern world. He has been through quite a bit in his own life, but continues to navigate through challenge and change with grace, curiosity, and patience, as he returns to his practice and cushion for insight and support. He leads with kindness and walks his talk by deepening his knowledge and practice with each passing day to show up for himself and those he cares most about, which he extends to his students and those he works with. We are incredibly grateful to have had this discussion to share more about meditation with the ReidConnect-ED Podcast listeners. Be curious. Be Open. If so, you may benefit from seeking healthy, ongoing accountability as part of your spiritual journey toward Christ-likeness. Welcome to Run With Horses! My name is Norman and my goal is to help you thrive as a follower of Jesus. The spiritual life is simple in many ways, but potentially the most difficult part of your life. Thank you for joining me today! “If you're new here, you can check out past episodes at runwithhorses.net. As always, I appreciate your feedback, questions, and reviews!” **(23:00 – 0:00)* * PART 1 Shout out to Radio Stations! When the topic is accountability many people instantly run for the hills, fearing an heavy overbearing hand forcing them to do things they don't want to do and hating every minute of it. Let me ease your mind, that is not Biblical accountability! Biblical Accountability is a key tool in the life of a follower of Jesus who is seeking to grow spiritually and live according to biblical principles. It is something you invite into your relationships with other growing disciple of Jesus. We are on the same path and can help each other as we go. It's not force, it's mutual cooperation to intentionally move in the direction God is showing us. 1. Accountability to God As followers of Jesus, we are ultimately accountable to God for how we live our lives. Every believer must recognize that their actions, thoughts, and behaviors are under God's authority. Romans 14:12 2 Corinthians 5:10 2. Accountability to Fellow Believers The Bible also teaches that believers should be accountable to one another. We are not meant to walk the Christian life alone. God designed the church as a community where believers help one another grow spiritually. Galatians 6:1-2 James 5:16 3. Mutual Accountability in Spiritual Growth Spiritual growth requires intentionality, and part of that is having people in our lives who can help hold us accountable in our pursuit of holiness and spiritual maturity. Hebrews 10:24-25 Proverbs 27:17 4. Examples of Accountability in the Bible Nathan and David: A powerful example of accountability can be seen in the relationship between the prophet Nathan and King David. After David's sin with Bathsheba, God sent Nathan to confront David about his sin. Nathan's courage to hold David accountable ultimately led to David's repentance and restoration (2 Samuel 12:1-14). This example highlights how accountability often involves speaking the truth in love, even when it's difficult. Paul and Peter: The apostle Paul held Peter accountable in Galatians 2:11-14, when Peter's actions were inconsistent with the gospel. Peter was initially eating with Gentiles, but when certain Jewish believers arrived, he withdrew, fearing what they might think. Paul publicly confronted him, saying, “But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, ‘If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?'” (Galatians 2:14). This shows that accountability sometimes involves a public rebuke when necessary to uphold the truth of the gospel. Jesus and His Disciples: Jesus modeled accountability in His relationships with His disciples. He often rebuked them for their lack of faith or for misunderstanding His mission (e.g., Matthew 16:23, when He rebuked Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan!"). However, He also encouraged them to support each other, as seen in John 13:34-35, where He commanded them to love one another as He had loved them. The accountability Jesus modeled was always rooted in love and truth. 5. Personal Responsibility and the Role of the Holy Spirit Ultimately, the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the life of a believer as they grow spiritually. The Holy Spirit convicts believers of sin, guides them into truth, and empowers them to live out the Christian life. Accountability to the Holy Spirit is a matter of responding to His promptings and seeking His strength to live faithfully. John 14:26 Romans 8:13 **(00:00) END PART 1** **(27:00 – 5:00) BEGIN PART 2** Seeking out accountability is a crucial aspect of spiritual growth for several reasons. It helps believers stay on track in their walk with God, provides encouragement, and ensures that they are living according to biblical principles. 1. Why Should a Person Seek Out Accountability? a. Prevents Spiritual Drift Accountability acts as a safeguard against spiritual drift. Without accountability, a person might subtly slide away from their spiritual disciplines, make compromises, or even fall into sin without realizing it. Having someone who can help point out blind spots and encourage continued growth helps keep a believer anchored in their faith. Proverbs 4:23 b. Helps Resist Temptation We all face temptations, and sometimes, the temptation to sin feels overwhelming. Accountability provides a powerful weapon to fight against temptation, as having someone to confess struggles to and ask for prayer can make a huge difference in overcoming sin. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 c. Provides Encouragement Christian life is not a solo journey. Having others to encourage and challenge you is crucial for perseverance, especially when trials come. Accountability relationships are a source of encouragement when things feel difficult or when you're unsure about the next steps in your spiritual walk. Hebrews 10:24-25 d. Fosters Humility and Repentance Having someone who can challenge us or confront us when we're in the wrong helps us maintain a heart of humility and openness. Accountability is not just about staying in line but also about being willing to acknowledge our faults and make changes when needed. James 5:16 2. How Does Accountability Help a Person Grow? a. Encourages Discipline Spiritual growth requires intentionality and discipline. Accountability partners help set goals and hold each other to those goals. This might involve commitments to prayer, Bible reading, serving others, or other spiritual disciplines. Having someone to check in with keeps us motivated and consistent. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 b. Provides Insight and Perspective Accountability often brings perspective. We can be blind to our own shortcomings or struggles, but an accountability partner may see things we don't. They can offer valuable advice, wisdom, or scriptural insights that help us grow. Proverbs 27:17 c. Strengthens Faith When believers come together for mutual accountability, their faith grows. Seeing others live out their faith and share their experiences can inspire us to deepen our own commitment to God. It fosters a sense of camaraderie and strengthens our resolve to stay faithful. Romans 1:12 d. Promotes Holiness and Christlikeness Accountability helps keep believers focused on the goal of becoming more like Christ. The process of confessing sin, receiving correction, and being encouraged to pursue holiness creates an environment where believers can grow in their sanctification. Philippians 2:1-2 3. How Can a Person Go About Finding Ongoing Accountability Relationships? a. Start with Prayer Before seeking accountability, it's important to pray for guidance. Ask God to lead you to the right people—those who are spiritually mature and trustworthy, and who will help you grow in your faith. James 1:5 b. Look for Like-minded Individuals Seek people who are also committed to growing spiritually and living out biblical principles. Accountability works best when both parties are serious about their spiritual growth. This can include fellow church members, small group participants, or individuals from a Bible study. 2 Corinthians 6:14 c. Join a Small Group or Bible Study Small groups, Bible studies, or discipleship groups are great places to build deeper relationships where mutual accountability can happen. These groups provide a natural environment for openness, prayer, and spiritual growth. Acts 2:42 d. Approach Someone with Humility If you don't already have an accountability partner, don't be afraid to approach someone you respect spiritually and ask if they would be willing to meet regularly to hold each other accountable. Be honest about what you're seeking and humble in your approach. Proverbs 15:22 e. Be Open and Transparent The success of accountability relationships depends on openness and honesty. Be willing to share your struggles and your victories, and be open to both encouragement and correction. Ephesians 4:25 Accountability is Healthy Relationships At its core, talking about growth issues together. What we need, how we do it, what the stumbling blocks are. Asking how it's going is a rminder to keep trying! **(5:00 – 1:00)** Doctrine Today Jesus - Incarnation **(1:00)** – “Thank you for listening today! -If you enjoyed the show you can listen to all the past shows wherever you listen to podcasts. Healing Our Hurts What if your past pain is still shaping your future? This message is about healing—not just the obvious hurts, but the hidden wounds we carry through life. Betrayal, grief, disappointment, shame—these don't fade with time. But the cross and the empty tomb tell a better story. Jesus showed us the way: He acknowledged the hurt, let go of the right to retaliate, prayed for His enemies, made room for reconciliation, and trusted God with the outcome. If He carried our wounds to the cross and walked out of the grave—scars and all—maybe your pain has a purpose too. And maybe healing will start today. Luke 23:26-56 Discussion topics Icebreaker - When you hear the word hurt, what's the first story, memory, or feeling that comes to mind? Luke 22:44 – Jesus in the Garden - What does this moment teach us about acknowledging our pain instead of suppressing it? Is there a hurt in your life that you've avoided naming or dealing with? 5 Steps to Healing - Of the 5 Steps to Healing shared in the sermon (Acknowledge the Hurt, Forfeit the Right to Punish, Pray for Them, Be Open to Reconciliation, Trust God with Your Future), Which step is hardest for you right now? Why? Which one do you feel God is inviting you to take next? From Pain to Purpose - Jesus rose with scars, not open wounds. What would it look like for your hurt to become a scar—no longer painful, but still purposeful? Is there anyone in your Community Group that needs to take their next step by being water baptized? Check out our other audio series and video playlists that can help you find Jesus in every moment and then discover what's next

In today's episode, Alex Fisher, CEO and CCO of Netcapital Securities, shared how her team empowers businesses by leveraging a comprehensive suite of tools including Reg A, Reg D, and Reg CF offerings. Her insights highlight the importance of tailoring fundraising strategies to meet the unique needs of each company, ensuring both flexibility and success.Alex explained, “When people hear crowdfunding, they kind of lump all of the different offering types and ways to raise capital together.” Netcapital's approach, however, recognizes the nuances of these methods. For instance, Reg CF allows companies to raise up to $5 million from the general public, while Reg D removes the cap but limits investments to accredited investors. Combining these strategies can create opportunities for businesses to achieve their goals more effectively. For Alex, the innovation lies in the ability to use these regulations strategically. She noted, “Companies who look to utilize both offering types at the same time are being very strategic… using the Reg CF bucket to open the investment opportunity to their broad network,” including customers and social media followers. Meanwhile, Reg D can attract larger investments from accredited investors such as venture capitalists. One of the most exciting developments Alex discussed is the potential for liquidity in crowdfunding. While much of the focus has been on raising capital, Netcapital is exploring ways to offer investors opportunities for future liquidity. This forward-thinking approach benefits both issuers and investors, enhancing the overall value of crowdfunding.Netcapital's role as both a broker-dealer and a funding portal sets it apart from other platforms. “Under Reg CF, companies are limited to listing on one portal at a time,” Alex explained. “That restriction doesn't exist in Regulation A or Regulation D and doesn't apply to broker-dealers.” This flexibility allows Netcapital to collaborate with other platforms, creating a synergistic ecosystem that benefits companies and investors alike.By combining innovative strategies with a deep understanding of regulatory frameworks, Alex and her team at Netcapital are helping businesses raise capital smarter, faster, and more effectively. If you're considering crowdfunding for your business, Alex's expertise offers a roadmap for success. As she put it, “It's very facts and circumstances based… You want to understand the stage of the company, the industry, and the networks they're a part of.”tl;dr:Alex Fisher explains how Netcapital combines Reg CF, Reg A, and Reg D to fundraise strategically. She highlights the untapped potential for liquidity in crowdfunding, benefiting both issuers and investors.Netcapital's broker-dealer status allows for unique flexibility and collaboration across fundraising platforms.Alex's intellectual curiosity drives her personal growth and her ability to connect with clients. She shares actionable tips for fostering intellectual curiosity to fuel professional and personal success. How to Develop Intellectual Curiosity As a SuperpowerAlex Fisher's superpower is her intellectual curiosity, a trait she describes as “thinking deeply and critically about a number of things.” This mindset drives her to question established norms, explore new ideas, and continuously improve both personally and professionally. Alex explained, “It's about not just accepting things for how they are and constantly thinking about how to do things better.” Her curiosity fuels her ability to connect with clients on a deeper level, understanding not just their business goals but also their personal motivations.Illustrative Story:Alex shared how rekindling her love of reading helped her rediscover her intellectual curiosity. After years of focusing solely on textbooks, regulations, and professional development, she began reading for personal interest in 2022. S6 E4: Being Enough - Exploring Perfectionism w/Dr. Ellen HendriksenWhen will it ever be enough? When will I be enough? These are the questions people with perfectionistic tendencies ruminate over, oftentimes without definitive answers. In this incredibly informative and insightful interview, we expand upon our original episode on perfectionism (S2E3) with a top expert, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen, who recently released her second book “How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists.” In this conversation, we discuss the nuances of identifying perfectionistic tendencies, how perfectionism manifests across different contexts, what therapy for perfectionism looks like, and stories that bring this important topic to light. This episode is timely and significant given the immense cultural and technological shifts in society over the past few decades that have pushed people further toward an obsession with optimization and productivity while also grappling with the concept and meaning of self-acceptance. We explore the pros and cons of perfectionism in a nuanced way, which is what we strive to do on this podcast.Be curious. Be Open. Be well. S6 E3: Fostering Engagement in Learning w/UDL expert Allison Posey. In a world of checks and boxes, especially in work and learning, our goal is to have listeners think about what is possible to transform their own lives. The way we engage in all we do is often a choice, but the transformation and level of engagement can be increased when we have appropriate access to the possibilities. In this episode, we are thrilled to be joined by friend and colleague, Allison Posey who is an expert in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and author of: “Engage the Brain: How to Design for Learning that Taps into the Power of Emotions” and “Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL”. Our discussion with Allison traverses the possibilities that educators and designers of all environments- which we believe are all learning environments- can proactively plan for to accommodate variability. When we design with flexibility and access in mind, we ultimately create greater equity and facilitate engagement in learning. Be curious. Be Open. Send us a textI hope you enjoy today's episode, and it is helpful to and for you. So, today's about being open and it stems from a lunch I had last week.
This blogcast explores “Make Time and Be Open” written and read by Krissy Pierno.vIn this blog post, Krissy shares her practices for Lent and how she can make the most of it to draw closer to Christ. Thinking back to my first questions, I still am going to find it difficult to be in quiet with God and not just find time but MAKE time for Christ. I really think that's the difference: when we only have moments here and there to give, we're not at peace. When we make time for Christ—schedule it into a calendar or create a time of the day for just us and God—we will feel and find his blessings that much more easily. My challenge for you is to schedule time for God each week in Lent. Priorities will still be important and life will still be hectic and busy, but we can only sit with Christ in the desert for forty days. I wouldn't want to miss that for anything in the world. My scheduled times with God for the next forty days will be: Tuesdays on my ride home from work, Saturday mornings for a few minutes before everyone is awake, Friday mornings on my way into work, and Sundays during the Gospel and homily when I can think and reflect on the Word in Scripture. I know I can achieve these four times each week, and I know it's not too much for my to-do list. I've even added them to my calendar so I can't forget. S6 E1: Facing FearsThis may be one of the most important episodes we have recorded thus far in thinking about how facing fears can often be the impetus for creating positive change in one's life. In this episode Alexis & Jerry have a nuanced conversation about facing fears through exposure.Oftentimes fear can keep us stuck in repeated behaviors, more comfortable situations, or even hinder our willingness to create positive change. When we turn toward, rather than against our fears, we can often uncover opportunities and options we may have never imagined. This episode traverses the intricacies of exposure therapy, neuro-developmental implications of avoiding that which we fear, motivations for change, and so much more. Alexis even opens up about a fear she faced with Dr. Reid walking her through a mock therapy session. He also pulls the curtain back to narrate some of his decisions in the process to share example perspectives from a psychologist helping a patient through an exposure to fear. After listening, you may walk away with a new appreciation for fear, what it may teach us, and what we can do to face it with guidance and support.Be curious. Support our work at https://thewpminute.com/supportGet the newsletter at https://thewpminute.com/subscribeYou can use WordPress to build all kinds of websites. There are no hard limits when it comes to looks or functionality. That freedom is powerful. You can build sites that handle eCommerce, memberships, and large databases. You can tie in with third-party APIs and create headless front ends. However, such power may be overwhelming to freelancers. Each type of site has its intricacies – learning them can be difficult. And some are more profitable and relevant to your business than others. That's a good reason to find a niche. Developing preferences for site type, client type, and price range helps narrow your focus. From there, you can find projects that fit you best. The result is a leaner, more efficient freelance business. In addition, you'll become an expert in your field. How does it work? And how do you find your niche? We've got some tips for discovering and doing what you like best with WordPress. Be Open to Different Types of ProjectsIf you're new to freelancing or don't have a niche yet – don't worry. Determining your path is part of the fun. You might as well treat it as an adventure. Keep an open mind as you look for new projects. Pay particular attention to the types of sites you haven't built before. The same goes for plugins and clients in different industries. Don't be afraid to consider the unfamiliar. Perhaps that sounds counterintuitive. How can you develop a niche and be open-minded at the same time? It's all about gaining experience. If you've only built brochure-style sites – how will you know if eCommerce is a good fit? You'll only learn by rolling up your sleeves and trying. The trick is to find projects that won't overwhelm you. For example, a site that sells a single product could be the perfect match for a beginner. Avoid sites that require a heavy dose of expertise. The more types of projects you complete, the more data you'll gather. Use it to understand your pros, cons, likes, and dislikes.Look for Opportunities That Match Your PreferencesFor this section, we'll assume you have some experience building different kinds of websites. And perhaps you've found a potential niche. The next step is to look at the market and identify opportunities to make it work. Dedicating yourself to a niche is great – but it must be sustainable. Otherwise, you'll be stuck working on projects that don't match your preference. They might also get in the way of booking ideal gigs later on. Let's look at a few examples:Medical-Related WebsitesIn this scenario, we're focusing on a specific industry: the medical field, which is large and has a variety of potential niches. That includes doctor's offices, suppliers, non-profit organizations, etc. It might make sense to pick one or two of these subgenres to start. But which ones? Here are some things to consider:Geography: Are there potential clients in your area? Or are you willing to work with anyone, anywhere?Connections: Networking is always a handy skill – but it's vital when working within an industry. The right connections can help you find clients and expand your business.Features: Are there features that are common to medical websites? Do you have a reliable and efficient way to provide them?Budget: Research the costs associated with building websites in the industry. Finding specifics may be difficult. However, the goal is to determine how much you'll need to charge to be profitable – and how much clients are willing to spend.Competition: Can you identify other freelancers or agencies in this niche? Are they doing great work (or not)? A lot of competition may make it harder to book new clients. However, it might also be an opportunity to one-up those providing poor service. The above factors will help you determine whether the niche fits and give you ideas for standing out in the marketplace.Membership Websites and Online CommunitiesNext, we'll focus on a particular type of website. This niche is all about building online communities designed to serve members. The need for membership sites spans across industries and non-profit organizations. The factors in our first example still apply. However, some extra considerations revolve around technology:Plugins: What plugins will you use for building membership websites? Will you buy into an ecosystem (like WooCommerce and its extensions)? Does it make sense to choose different plugins based on project needs? This is useful for determining your tech stack and calculating software license fees.Third-party services: What services will you integrate into client websites? Think of payment gateways, mailing list services, customer relationship management (CRM) apps, web hosting, etc. There's also a chance to focus on specific tools. Note any fees associated with these services as it will help you provide accurate project estimates.Organizational size: Membership sites can have a few members or millions. Do you want to work with smaller organizations, big ones, or somewhere in the middle? The technical side of a niche is challenging and subject to change. But having a solid plan provides a great place to start. To Expand Your Niche or Not?There are a few reasons why you might want to expand your niche. Sometimes they're too narrow and don't generate enough revenue. In addition, the skills you've acquired in one area might also apply to others. It's an opportunity for growth in either case. The first is more about need, while the second is a chance to evolve. Once again, it's worth keeping an open mind when considering expansion. Look at related areas that could benefit your business and boost your bottom line. There is some risk involved and it's OK to be choosy. Before jumping in, ask yourself a few key questions:How will my current skills apply? Working with different industries or site types could mean learning new skills. Think about the potential impact on your time and revenue. Can I use the same themes and plugins? The ability to repurpose themes and plugins makes it easier to expand. Significant changes here can still be worthwhile – but beware of the required cost and effort. What are the most impactful differences? Even related industries and site types can have stark differences. That could be anything from legal requirements to client budgets. It's good to discover these things ahead of time. How will this change impact my current clients? Consider what an expansion means to your existing portfolio. Will you have less time to work with them? Will costs go up?Ideally, there should be a link between your current niche and the new one. The more similarities, the easier the transi...

You move to the U.S. with strong technical skills, ready to grow, but over time, you find yourself stuck—working in outdated technologies, unable to switch jobs because of immigration processes, and ultimately risking your long-term career prospects. If this sounds like you or someone you know, stay tuned. We're going to break this down—why this happens, what risks it creates, and how to avoid getting trapped in a stagnant job. Let's get started!"#H1B #CareerGrowth #JobMarket #Upskilling #GreenCardBacklog #TechCareers #VisaChallenges #StayRelevant #WorkVisa #Immigration #CareerAdvice #TechJobs #ITCareer #AdaptAndGrowThe First 6 Years on H1-B: The Golden Phase* When professionals first arrive in the U.S. on an H1-B visa, they usually have solid technical skills. They are excited, ambitious, and eager to prove themselves.* Typically, these professionals work hard, upskill, and establish themselves within their companies.* Their employer and client see their value and realize that retaining them beyond the six-year H1-B limit is beneficial to the company. At this point, things are looking great. But then, a critical transition happens—one that many H1-B professionals don't think about early enough. The Green Card Backlog and Getting Stuck* After 6 years, if the employer wants to retain them, they begin the Green Card process.* For Indian nationals, the backlog is extreme. Right now, applications from 2011 are still being processed. That means many professionals could be waiting decades, even 100+ years, for their Green Card.* So, what happens? The employer files an I-140, which allows H1-B extensions beyond six years, effectively keeping the employee on an H1-B indefinitely.* This is where the real problem begins. The Trap: Why H1-B Professionals Stop GrowingOnce their Green Card is in process, many H1-B professionals start playing it safe:* They avoid switching jobs because restarting the Green Card process with a new employer feels risky.* If their client's technology is outdated, they don't push for learning new skills.* They prioritize job security over career growth. This comfort zone is what kills long-term career prospects. The Risk of Outdated SkillsLet's talk about why this is a dangerous trap:* Technology is moving fast.* What was in demand 10 years ago is obsolete today. If your skills are not updated, you will struggle to get a new job.* The longer you stay in outdated technologies, the harder it is to transition.* Employers look for people with hands-on experience in new tools. If you've been working on legacy systems for 10 years, moving to a modern tech stack will be very difficult.* What if you lose your job?* Imagine you lose your job today.* You're now competing with younger, more up-to-date professionals.* Your visa clock is ticking. If you don't find another job in 60 days, you must leave the U.S.* At that point, you realize how staying stagnant has put your career at risk. How to Avoid This Trap? The good news is—this situation is avoidable. Here's what you can do:* Upskill Regularly* Stay ahead of industry trends.* Take online courses, get certifications, and work on side projects.* Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, and EdX can help you stay competitive.* Be Open to New Opportunities* Don't be afraid to switch jobs.* Yes, your employer filed your Green Card, but you can port your priority date to a new employer and restart the process.* Network with Other Professionals* Join industry groups, attend meetups, and connect with hiring managers.* The best opportunities often come from networking, not job applications.* Have a Backup Plan* If you feel your current employer is limiting your growth, consider alternative options.* If the Green Card backlog is 100 years, it's worth considering returning to India or other countries where opportunities are growing fast.Final Thoughts: Your Career is Your ResponsibilityIf you're on an H1-B, remember:✅ You must take control of your career.✅ Don't stay in a job just for visa security.✅ Upskilling and staying relevant is non-negotiable.✅ Be strategic—look at your long-term career, not just short-term visa status.H1-B is an opportunity, not a trap. But only if you stay proactive. If you found this episode useful, share it with friends, colleagues, or anyone who might be stuck in this cycle. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are exploring the power of influence, recognizing what shapes us, and taking back control. We have all been bombarded with messaging asking, begging, and sometimes coercing us to think, feel, and take action. Where do your own thoughts hide in the midst of such assaults? Influence as a pervasive force in our lives that can shape our choices, our mindset, and even our identity. It can feel like a current—sometimes it gently guides us, but other times it's strong enough to sweep us off our feet. The key is in recognizing where influence is coming from and deciding how much power to give it. Let's take a big breathe here and make a commitment to unpack, resort, and purge some influencing ideas that no longer serve us in a positive way. Influence is more than just peer pressure; it's subtle and can come from various sources—family, friends, social media, society, our inner dialogue, and even our environment. A close friend's advice feels comforting but can sometimes lead you down their path instead of yours. Social media trends can push you to buy, think, or act in ways you normally wouldn't. Influence of a mentor or a loved one can impactfully shape your values and ambitions. Tyler Jensen, a psychotherapist, sheds some light on The Allure of Negativity: Why Our Brains Are Drawn to It At Knowledge of Wharton, I found ‘Invisible Influence': What Really Shapes Our Decisions, an interview with the author Jonah Berger On Simon Sinek's YouTube channel, as always, I found some wise words on How to Stop Holding Yourself Back Develop Media Literacy and Mindful Consumption Pause and Evaluate: Before you engage with media (whether it's news, social media, or entertainment), take a moment to reflect on what you're about to consume. Ask yourself why you're choosing this source, and consider whether it aligns with your values or goals. Question the Source: Develop a habit of asking, “Who created this, and what might be their motivation?” For example, consider whether a brand, influencer, or network could have hidden interests. Recognizing potential biases helps you stay in control of how you interpret information. Limit Exposure to Influential Sources Set Boundaries: If you notice certain media or social media accounts lead to self-doubt, stress, or unhealthy comparison, consider unfollowing, muting, or setting a time limit on those platforms. Curate Positive Influences: Choose to follow people, brands, and organizations that support your goals, align with your values, and inspire you in constructive ways. Make it a rule to engage with content that adds positivity and growth to your life. Strengthen Your Core Values Define Your Values: Reflect on what's truly important to you, whether it's integrity, creativity, kindness, learning, or independence. When you have a solid sense of your core values, it becomes easier to recognize when outside influence aligns or conflicts with them. Regularly Revisit Goals and Priorities: Set aside time each month to revisit your goals. Are you on track with what you want, or have you drifted because of external pressures? Realigning with your values keeps you grounded in your personal vision. Practice Self-Questioning to Uncover Hidden Influence Ask Yourself Key Questions:“Why do I want to do this?” This question can help you determine if a choice truly aligns with your desires or if it's an idea you've absorbed from others. “How do I feel about this?” Checking in with your feelings lets you see if you're enthusiastic, uneasy, or pressured—emotions that reveal whether your decision is authentic. “What would I do if no one else were watching?” Imagine you're free of anyone's opinion or judgment to help identify choices that are truly your own. Build Confidence in Your Own Voice Challenge Yourself to Act on Your Opinions: Start with small decisions where you rely solely on your own thoughts. For example, choose an outfit based on your preference, pick a book that genuinely interests you, or make weekend plans based on what would make you happiest. Engage in Conversations with an Open Mind: Practice sharing your perspective in discussions, even if it's different from others. Engaging with diverse opinions while sticking to your viewpoint can help build resilience and confidence in your own voice. Create a Supportive Inner Circle Surround Yourself with Encouragers: Choose friends, mentors, and family members who respect your individuality and encourage you to make decisions that feel true to you. A supportive circle will uplift and validate you, rather than pressuring you to conform. Find Accountability Partners: Identify someone who's also working on taking control of their influences and check in with each other. Share your progress, any struggles, and celebrate wins together to help reinforce each other's growth. Practice Self-Compassion and Flexibility Recognize that Influence is Natural: Understand that we're all influenced by our environments. Self-compassion can prevent you from feeling guilty if you realize you've been swayed in a direction you didn't want. Instead, view it as an opportunity to learn and readjust. Be Open to Change: Sometimes, testing your perspective means you might genuinely change your opinion. That's a sign of growth. The goal is to ensure that any changes reflect your evolving self rather than fleeting external pressures. CHALLENGE: Remember, influence is a force we all experience, but it doesn't have to control us. Recognize what's guiding your path, decide what you want to allow in, and remember that you have the power to steer your own journey. I Know YOU Can Do It!

In this episode, CJ delves into the profound impact of social connections on our health and longevity. He explains how social bonds are not merely fulfilling but essential for a longer, healthier life. The episode explores scientific studies and ancient wisdom, from Aristotle to Confucianism, showing how cultures across the ages have valued social connections. CJ highlights how loneliness today rivals smoking in its health risks and offers practical steps to build meaningful relationships that foster well-being.Key Insights and TakeawaysLongevity and Relationships: Research shows that strong social connections can predict life expectancy more accurately than factors like exercise or diet. This aligns with ancient insights where societies, like the Greeks and Buddhists, emphasized community and mutual support.Evolution and Social Needs: Human evolution favors social bonds; isolation once meant a significant survival risk. Like wolves and elephants, humans thrive within social groups, with modern science linking social isolation to risks of heart disease, dementia, and mental health issues.Historical Perspectives on Community: Philosophies worldwide stress interconnectedness. Concepts like Ubuntu, Aristotle's "social animal," and Buddhist Sangha all underscore that our health, happiness, and even personal growth depend on community.Modern Risks of Loneliness: Loneliness today can impact mental and physical health severely, likened to smoking 15 cigarettes daily. Extended isolation can weaken social skills, decrease happiness, and shorten life expectancy. The Role of Laughter: Laughter serves as a "superpower" in social bonding, releasing feel-good hormones like dopamine and reducing stress. CJ notes that as people age, they laugh less, contributing to stress and isolation in adulthood.Practical Actions to Improve Social ConnectednessPractice Active Listening and Open Questions: Engaging others with thoughtful, open-ended questions (e.g., “What did you think about that?”) shows genuine interest and encourages deeper conversation, helping build rapport.Be Open and Approachable: Small gestures, like maintaining open body language, smiling, and making eye contact, can help make new social interactions feel more natural and welcoming.Start Small and Build Confidence: If meeting new people feels daunting, start by engaging in brief, friendly exchanges like smiling at a coworker or saying hello to a neighbor. These small interactions build confidence and help ease into larger social circles.Join Groups with Shared Interests: Clubs, teams, or online communities provide a natural setting for connection. They offer a low-pressure environment to meet others who share your passions, helping expand your social network.Stay Consistent in Friendships: Building and maintaining relationships require regular effort. Check in with friends, plan occasional get-togethers, or simply send a quick message to show you care, as consistency strengthens social bonds. This episode serves as a powerful reminder of how essential social connectedness is to our mental and physical health. Whether through family, friends, or even casual acquaintances, the connections we nurture can significantly impact our lives, contributing to our happiness, resilience, and longevity.

Episode Summary: In this episode of The MetaBusiness Millennial, I delve into the topic of resilient leadership—what it means to remain unshakeable, no matter what challenges come your way. With the world changing rapidly since the pandemic, it's more important than ever to cultivate strength and stability in both business and life. I share personal experiences of navigating setbacks, including moments of betrayal and frustration, and how these situations have helped me grow as a leader. Through our conversation, we explore practical tools and strategies for staying centered, maintaining your vision, and managing the ups and downs that come with pursuing your goals. Whether you're dealing with emotional roadblocks or looking for ways to stay true to your purpose, this episode offers valuable insights and encouragement. Key Takeaways: Managing Emotions is Crucial: Being a resilient leader means recognizing and nurturing your emotions, not ignoring them. Acknowledge your feelings—anger, sadness, frustration—and find ways to process them healthily through activities like meditation, journaling, or simply sitting with your thoughts. Hold Tight to Your Vision: Even during tough times, it's important to stay focused on your dreams and values. Trust that the challenges you face are part of your growth journey, and remember that setbacks can often be opportunities for deeper learning and self-reflection. Seek Guidance and Support: Having a mentor, coach, or spiritual guide can be a powerful way to accelerate your progress. They can help you see what you might be missing and offer a perspective that keeps you moving forward, even when things feel tough. Be Open to Change: Embracing flexibility and allowing yourself to "be like water" can help you navigate challenges with greater ease. Sometimes, letting go of rigid expectations can open up space for even better possibilities to unfold. Curate Your Digital Space: If social media feels overwhelming, take steps to create a digital environment that supports your energy. Unfollow or mute accounts that don't align with you, and focus on engaging with content that uplifts and resonates with your journey.
