The Sallins train robbery was one of the most daring and lucrative heists in the history of the Irish State. And for Osgur Breatnach, a journalist and activist, it was the beginning of an ordeal that haunts him to this day. He was arrested that morning in 1976, as one of six accused of carrying out the robbery. One week before Christmas of the same year, he and his co-accused were brought into the Special Criminal Court and charged with the crime. It would become one of the most dramatic and longest-running criminal trials in the history of the State. In the final episode of this two-part documentary special, Kevin Doyle revisits the Sallins Train Robbery, speaking to Osgur Breathnach about the trial of the ‘sleeping Judge', living with PTSD, and why he feels a public inquiry is justified for he and his co-accused. On Friday, former Tralee businessman, 44-year-old Nathan McDonnell was sentenced to 12 years in prison for drug and organised crime offences. Radio Kerry’s Mark Lynch was at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin for the sentencing.
Radio Kerry journalist Mark Lynch was in the Special Criminal Court yesterday for the sentencing hearing of 44-year-old Nathan McDonnell with an address in Ballyroe, Tralee. The court was told that the businessman, previously CEO of Ballyseedy Garden Centre, was an important cog in the operation to store and export half a tonne of crystal meth from Ireland to Australia.
A 38-year-old man has been jailed for life for the murder of a Dublin man shot dead almost nine years ago as part of the ongoing Hutch-Kinahan feud. RTÉ Crime Correspondent, Paul Reynolds reports from the Special Criminal Court.
It's claimed Ennis town has descended into lawlessness due to escalations in incidents of criminality, feuding and anti-social behaviour being committed openly in public view. It comes as a Clare TD has appealed to the Garda Commissioner to intervene and commit further resources to this county. It's claimed the most robust responsible is needed from Gardaí, the Special Criminal Court and the Criminal Assets Bureau is needed to put down escalating feud violence in Clare. It follows a number of incidents over the festive period, including one which saw two vehicles damaged on the Mill Road in Ennis on Christmas Day, while a number of individuals brandished implements on the streets. Clare Joint Policing Committee member and Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe has since written to the Superintendent of the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on the matter. He says the full force of the law is needed. A Ennis resident meanwhile claims the town has become unsafe for older people and that increased incidents of criminality , public intoxication and anti-social behaviour are ruining the county's capital. Morning Focus Listener John says situation urgently needs to be addressed.
A Clare TD has called for the Special Criminal Court to put manners on Clare's feuding families. It follows a number of violent incidents that occurred in this county over the festive period, with several videos widely circulating online. Meelick deputy, Cathal Crowe, has written to both the Chief Superintendent of the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division, Aileen Magner, and to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on the matter. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Cathal Crowe. Photo (c) Pixabay

His co-accused, 41-year-old James Leen of Kilmorna, Listowel, also faces five charges, including importing the crystal meth into Ireland, and directing the activities of a criminal organisation within the state. Radio Kerry’s Mark Lynch has been covering the case.

It was a trial that gripped the nation earlier this year which culminated on the 17th of April with Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch being found not guilty by Special Criminal Court of the murder of David Byrne at a boxing event weigh in at the Regency Hotel in 2016. Paul Williams, Crime Journalist with The Irish Independent joined Kieran to take a look back...
The Sallins Train Robbery in 1976 was one of the most audacious criminal acts ever in the State. The Dublin to Cork mail train, carrying £200,000, was robbed with the IRA (much later) claiming responsibility, but only after three innocent men had been jailed. The men were tried, convicted and imprisoned as part of a convoluted saga involving the non-jury Special Criminal Court, claims of physical assault, forced confessions and a finding by the court that injuries sustained while in custody by some of the men were self-inflicted. In recent days, four human rights groups have petitioned Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to establish a statutory inquiry into what they say is one of the most significant miscarriages of justice in modern Irish history. Patsy McGarry, Irish Times contributor and author of While Justice Slept: Nicky Kelly and the True Story Behind the Sallins Train Robbery, tells the story of the crime and the convictions, and says this call for an inquiry is just another in nearly 50 years of such calls; none of which have resulted in action. Two men have been found not guilty of direct involvement in the robbery that led to the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe. The three judges of the Special Criminal Court today found James ‘Jimmy' Flynn (32) from South Armagh not guilty of direct involvement in the robbery of E7,000 at Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, Co Louth. Co-accused man Brendan ‘Benny' Treanor was also found not guilty - with the judges finding that the evidence showed he was a “member” of the criminal gang involved - but it did not prove beyond all reasonable doubt that he was at the scene of the crime when it occurred.
