Radio Kerry journalist Mark Lynch was in the Special Criminal Court yesterday for the sentencing hearing of 44-year-old Nathan McDonnell with an address in Ballyroe, Tralee. The court was told that the businessman, previously CEO of Ballyseedy Garden Centre, was an important cog in the operation to store and export half a tonne of crystal meth from Ireland to Australia.

A jury at Tralee Circuit Court found 34-year-old Dominic Nokwe of House M, Fountain Court, Tralee guilty of 17 counts of money laundering relating to a total of over €90,000. Radio Kerry journalist Mark Lynch covered the trial.

Two Kerry men facing charges in connection with the state’s largest ever seizure of crystal meth have been sent forward to stand trial in a non-jury Special Criminal Court. 44-year-old Tralee businessman Nathan McDonnell of Ballyroe, Tralee, faces five charges including possession of crystal meth for sale or supply, and facilitating a criminal organisation to commit serious offences. His co-accused, 41-year-old James Leen of Kilmorna, Listowel, also faces five charges, including importing the crystal meth into Ireland, and directing the activities of a criminal organisation within the state. Separately, 41-year-old James Leen of Pilgrim Hill, Kilmorna, Listowel and 43-year-old Nathan McDonnell of Ballyroe, Tralee also appeared in connection with the €32.8m crystal meth seizure in Cork Port earlier this month.

Yesterday, the Road Safety Authority at its annual awards ceremony to promote road safety, awarded Radio Kerry journalist Mark Lynch with the first Gay Byrne Media Award. Gay was a former chairman of the RSA. Mark won the award for his interview last March with Andrea Browne whose sister Kerrie died in a crash in 2019.
