*A warning, today's episode contains details of domestic violence which listeners may find upsetting* Terrorist, garda killer and prolific wife beater, Pearse McAuley's long litany of convictions have established him as one of Ireland's most dangerous criminals for over 30 years. The Northern Irish para-military figure made the headlines in the early 1990s for a daring escape from an English prison, but his crimes against the State, in the shooting of a garda in 1996, would wrap his name in infamy among Irish criminal history. McAuley was part of a team that murdered Detective Garda Jerry McCabe. The garda was shot at point-blank range by an AK-47 in an attack by the Provisional IRA on June 7, 1996, outside Adare Post Office. Garda McCabe's colleague, Detective Garda Ben O'Sullivan, was seriously injured in the attack. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/22j74wuk Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Hutch found not guilty of murdering David Byrne. Hutch faighte neamhchiontach i ndúnmharú David Byrne. In the Special Criminal Court, Gerard Hutch from Dublin was found not guilty of the murder of David Byrne who was shot in the Regency Hotel in Finbury in north Dublin seven years ago. Sa Chúirt Choiriúil Speisialta, fuarthas neamhchiontach Gerard Hutch as Baile Átha Cliath i ndúmharú David Byrne a lámhachadh in Óstán an Regency i bhFionnbhrú i dtuaisceart Bhaile Átha Cliath seacht mbliana ó shin. The murder involved a feud between the Hutch and Kinahan crime gangs that resulted in the killing of eighteen people. Bhain an dúnmharú le himreas idir dhronga coireachta Hutch agus Kinahan ar maraíodh ocht nduine dhéag dá bharr. It was claimed by the prosecution that Gerard Hutch was one of two men dressed as Gardaí who shot David Byrne in the hotel reception room on 5 February 2016. Bhí sé á mhaíomh ag an ionchúiseamh go raibh Gerard Hutch ar dhuine de bheirt a bhí gléasta mar Ghardaí agus a lámhach David Byrne i bhforsheomra fáiltithe an óstáin ar an 5 Feabhra 2016. However, the judges said that although some of the evidence in the trial suggested that Gerard Hutch may have given his blessing to the shooting attack, it could not be said that he himself was the member or personally involved. Dúirt na breithiúna, áfach, cé gur thug cuid den fhianaise sa triail le tuiscint go mb'fhéidir gur thug Gerard Hutch a bheannacht don ionsaí lámhaigh, nárbh in le rá go raibh sé féin ar an mball ná páirteach ann go pearsanta. In fact, said the judges, everything happened in the hotel at lightning speed that day and the signs of the attackers - as security cameras show them - do not match the signs of Gerard Hutch who was over half a century old at the time. Go deimhin, arsa na breithiúna, is ar luas lasrach a tharla gach rud san óstán an lá úd agus ní thagann comharthaí sóirt na n-ionsaitheoirí – de réir mar a léiríonn ceamaraí slándála iad – ní thagann siad le comharthaí sóirt Gerard Hutch a bhí os cionn leathchéad bliain d'aois ag an am. Earlier in court, two other men were convicted of helping a criminal organization to murder David Byrne by providing vehicles. Níos túisce sa chúirt, ciontaíodh beirt fhear eile i gcabhrú le heagraíocht choireachta David Byrne a dhúnmharú trí fheithicilí a chur fáil. They are Paul Murphy, a 61-year-old taxi driver, from Cherry Avenue, Swords and Jason Bonney, a 52-year-old builder, from Drumwood, Portmarnock. Sin iad Paul Murphy, tiománaí tacsaí 61 bliain, as Ascaill na Silíní, Sord agus Jason Bonney, tógálaí 52 bliain, as Coill Dhroimní, Port Mearnóg. The court ruled that Paul Murphy was one of the people who took David Byrne's killer from the scene shortly after the attack. Rialaigh an chúirt go raibh Paul Murphy ar dhuine de na daoine a thug an dream a mharaigh David Byrne ón láthair go gairid i ndiaidh an ionsaithe. Jason Bonney was convicted of taking one of the killers – the late Kevin Murray – from the scene of the attack in his car. Ciontaíodh Jason Bonney i nduine de na marfóirí – Kevin Murray nach maireann – a thabhairt ó láthair an ionsaithe ina ghluaisteán. The judges cast great doubt on some of the evidence given by Paul Murphy and Jason Bonney - and on some of the evidence given on their behalf - about what they were doing on 5 February 2016. Chaith na breithiúna amhras mór ar chuid den fhianaise a thug Paul Murphy agus Jason Bonney – agus ar chuid den fhianaise a tugadh ar a son – faoina raibh á dheánamh acu ar an 5 Feabhra 2016. They also cast doubt on much of the evidence given by former Sinn Féin councilor Jonathan Dowdall against Gerard Hutch. Chaith siad amhras freisin ar chuid mhór den fhianaise a thug iarchomhairleoir de chuid Shinn Féin Jonathan Dowdall in aghaidh Gerard Hutch.
