On the latest episode of the “Lean into Life” Podcast I was delighted to welcome on Banker turned Bard Paul Byrne. Paul has recently published his 2nd collection of poems called “For the love of Kerry” This is a must see book and it also includes some wonderful photographs of the Kingdom of Kerry which mostly have been captured by Paul himself. Paul is definitely someone who has leant into his own life and we talked about his early childhood in Listowel, Kerry and then moving up the country before finding his way back to the Kingdom years later and turning away from the corporate world and turning into his creative side and becoming a published poet. Austin Stack is the son of prison officer Brian Stack who was killed by the IRA in 1983. He’s the author of ‘Justice for My Father’, and will be in Listowel for the town’s literary festival which runs until this Sunday, June 1st.
The Law Society of Ireland has named Hazel Barrett from Presentation Secondary School, Listowel as the winner of the national Gráinne O’Neill Memorial Legal Essay Competition for 2025. The transition year student won for her essay on the role the law can play in addressing hate crime. Another student at Presentation, Listowel Molly Linnane was a finalist in the competition. Continuing this week long feature to mark National Volunteering Week, Jerry finds out about the importance of volunteers in our health services – in hospitals and in the community. The extent of flooding that occurred in Listowel last November is unlikely to happen again for another 150 years. That’s according to MWP Ireland engineering consultants who were commissioned by Kerry County Council to investigate the flood which hit parts of Listowel and the surrounding area on November 23rd last year. The consultants recommend an early warning system be installed as a short-term mitigation. Over 60% of respondents to a Radio Kerry poll say they are optimistic for the year ahead in the county. However, more than eight out of ten who took part believe the cost of living will increase in 2025. These are some of the findings of the Kerry Thinks online survey which asked people a range of questions on subjects including infrastructure, housing, health, and crime. An Garda Síóchána is to honour three Kerry gardaí who helped save a seven-week-old baby’s life. Garda Mark Cushen, Garda Ryan Hill and Garda Eleanor Shiels responded to an emergency call from Donna O’Loughlin from Athea last August when her baby Precious choked and lost consciousness. Garda Cushen and Garda Hill were recipients of last month’s Fexco Kerry Hero Awards on the Kerry Today show.
Garda Mark Cushen and Garda Ryan Hill have been nominated by Jocelyn, Mark’s daughter, for helping save the life of a seven-week-old old baby in August. Baby Precious’s mother Donna O’Loughlin is convinced the Listowel-based gardaí made all the difference in Precious being alive today.

Kerry County Council has announced Christmas parking arrangements for Tralee, Killarney and Listowel. The arrangements intended to encourage people to shop locally will run from December 6th until January 5th inclusive. 57-year-old Paul Sweeney from Listowel was on holidays in Benidorm when he became unwell with bacterial meningitis and suffered a brain-injury. Paul’s family started fund-raising to help bring Mr Sweeney back from Spain to University Hospital Kerry; the target set was €36,800. That’s been passed as of Monday afternoon, over €41,000 has been raised. Paul’s son-in-law Padraig Long spoke to Jerry.
Tralee businessman Nathan McDonnell has pleaded guilty to two charges connected to the seizure of €33 million worth of crystal meth in February. 44-year-old Mr McDonnell of Ballyroe, Tralee, and his co-accused 41-year-old James Leen of Kilmorna, Listowel, both appeared before the Special Criminal Court yesterday. Mark Lynch of Radio Kerry News was also in court.

Some communities in Kerry are to be left with no ambulance service on certain days of the week, following a change in rostering announced on Friday by the HSE. Sabrina Kirwin is a mother of a teenage girl who fell ill after attending an event in Listowel last weekend. HSE Outbreak Control Team is investigating after several teenage cases of a gastroenteritis-type illness were reported after the weekend. The cause of the illness is not known at this stage. The parents of any teenager who has had symptoms are asked to contact HSE South West Public Health (Cork and Kerry), on (021) 4927601.
Donna O’Loughlin says her seven-week-old baby Precious would have died were it not for the intervention of gardaí in Listowel. Last Saturday night, Ms O’Loughlin and her husband Joe were at home in Athea; they had been bottle-feeding Precious, when the infant got into difficulties.

Two Kerry men facing charges in connection with the state’s largest ever seizure of crystal meth have been sent forward to stand trial in a non-jury Special Criminal Court. 44-year-old Tralee businessman Nathan McDonnell of Ballyroe, Tralee, faces five charges including possession of crystal meth for sale or supply, and facilitating a criminal organisation to commit serious offences. His co-accused, 41-year-old James Leen of Kilmorna, Listowel, also faces five charges, including importing the crystal meth into Ireland, and directing the activities of a criminal organisation within the state. Radio Kerry’s Mark Lynch has been covering the case.
