All Blacks great Sir John Kirwan says Leon MacDonald's coaching future will have to be overseas after exiting as the All Blacks assistant coach yesterday. In a shock move, New Zealand Rugby announced MacDonald was stepping down from the role under All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson five tests into the season, and just a week out from their Rugby Championship test against South Africa. “It's unbelievable...incredible courage I believe on behalf of both of them,” Kirwan told the Mike Hosking Breakfast on Newstalk ZB. “If it's not working out because the status quo would be probably stay there, finish the season. But for them to move on this quicker, I think it's the best thing for the team.” ‘Some people just can't be assistants' Kirwan said there were probably two main reasons for MacDonald to walk away from the role. “Probably a lack of philosophy around how they are attacking. Once you don't agree on how they're going to attack it's pretty hard to mend,” he told Hosking. “And the second thing is, I think some people just can't be assistants as well. Leon's been a head coach now for a while, and so it's hard to sometimes go back to being assistant. Regardless of the timing of his exit, MacDonald will now be highly sought after by any side in need of a coach. At Super Rugby level, MacDonald led the Blues in 69 games during his four-year tenure, for 45 wins, 23 defeats and a draw. The Herald understands MacDonald turned down an approach from Scotland in order to sign on with Robertson and the All Blacks. “I think he'd probably have to go offshore, now. There's no jobs left in New Zealand,” Kirwan added. The All Blacks face the Springboks at Ellis Park next Sunday in their first meeting since the Rugby World Cup final. That is followed by a second test a week later in Cape Town. Kirwan said losing a coach midseason shouldn't be a major disruption for the players. “I don't think the players will be affected too much. I think they'll just carry on. I don't think he's going to be replaced, so it'll be one less voice. “He's [Robertson's] got enough people in there to fill the gap. I just think they'll carry on.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Zealand's first Surf Park facility has been given the green light to be built on Auckland's North Shore, after getting resource consent from the Environment Ministry. The 43-hectare facility marked for Dairy Flat is set to begin construction later this year. The project is expected to cost about 100 million dollars. The Surf Park will be the first of its kind to be powered by renewable energy. Surf lover and former All Black Sir john Kirwan who heads the project spoke to Corin Dann.
Our Crime Correspondent Paul Reynolds reports.
New Zealand's rugby provinces have been warned by the professional players association to brace for a civil war if they vote to approve their own governance change proposal at next week's special general meeting. In an explosive move, the New Zealand Rugby Players' Association (NZRPA) has told the unions it is ready to break away to form a new and separate entity to manage the professional game. The NZRPA says that if the provinces vote in favour of what is known as Proposal 2 – a new governance structure that the provinces have developed themselves and one that differs significantly to an alternative blueprint that aligns with the findings of an independent review – it will withdraw, via its collective employment agreement, the right for New Zealand Rugby (NZR) to govern the game. It leaves rugby in an even more uncomfortable position than before, with the game to be divided even further if the NZRPA decides it will no longer allow its players' image rights to be used by NZR. Former All Black Sir John Kirwan told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that the situation should never have reached this point and that he fears a repeat of the early days of professionalism, where players were split between signing up for official and rebel financial offers. “That will happen again, there will be an absolute split. That's why I don't think threatening to leave is the right answer. I understand Rob's [Nichol, chair of NZRPA] frustration because he has seen this governance review done and now they're trying to change it, I understand that frustration,” Kirwan said. NZRPA boss Rob Nichol. Photo / Dean Purcell He said that while rugby faces pressure for participation from other codes like football, there should be a united front among the leaders of the game rather than division. Kirwan told Hosking that those with the power to make change are digging in their heels and refusing to relinquish power, despite a review that cost millions telling them that was what was best for rugby. “Some of these chairmen, they're just holding the game a wee bit to ransom. Some of these guys that are fighting, their unions lost $800,000 to a million dollars last year. It's a broken system at the moment, we need to get back to what's best for our game,” he said. “You spent millions of dollars on a governance review, that governance review's come out and now you're trying to change it. So the problem is power. “The interesting thing for the public is the NPC sides really at the end of the day have a vote, all of them, that can change the direction of the game. What we're trying to do is speed that up, what the governance review said is we need to have a look at our game, we need to change it we need a different structure.” The 63-time All Black said he fears the New Zealand rugby-loving public are growing weary of the continued debate and that it will drive fans away from the game. “The trouble is, with me, I don't like threats of people leaving and that sort of stuff but our game continues to be split. The saddest thing for me is people don't give a s*** any more, because they're just sick of it. “Rather than having an opinion and being passionate about it, if you just stop caring that's when our game is in real danger.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Under Kirwan, the Virginia offense ranked among the top three nationally in goals per game in four different seasons. The 2023 Cavalier attack, which was instrumental in the team's run to the national semifinal, finished as the country's top scoring offense with 17.24 goals per game and set a new program record for total goals in a season (293). Kirwan was named the 2021 IMLCA Assistant Coach of the Year after helping guide Virginia to consecutive national titles.A 2012 Tufts University graduate, Kirwan coached 18 All-Americans during his tenure at Virginia, including recent two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist and three-time first teamer Connor Shellenberger. Another three-time All-American, Matt Moore, broke the program's single-season and career points records under Kirwan's tutelage after transitioning from midfield to attack. Additionally, Kirwan developed consecutive ACC Rookie of the Year honorees in Michael Kraus (2017) and Moore (2018). Prior to his seven-year stint at Virginia, Kirwan spent two seasons running the Brown offense with two Ivy League titles and a Final Four appearance to his credit. During the 2015 season, his first on the Bears' staff, Kirwan helped Brown win 12 games, its highest total since 2009, to set the stage for a program-best 16 victories the following season. His offense was especially potent in 2016 with a nation-leading 16.32 goals per game. Dylan Molloy was honored with the Tewaaraton Award as the top male collegiate lacrosse player in 2016, having led the country with 116 points, and becoming the first in program history to earn the prestigious accolade. Molloy was also named the Ivy League Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016. Kirwan coached under Lars Tiffany, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year recipient, at both Brown and Virginia. Tiffany earned back-to-back Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in 2015 and 2016 — both seasons with Kirwan on the staff. Kirwan played collegiately and began his coaching career at Division III Tufts, where he helped the Jumbos win their first-ever national championship as part of his record-setting playing career that featured 150 goals — the program's top mark at the time. He joined the coaching staff following his 2012 graduation and spent two seasons leading the team's offense before entering the Division I coaching ranks prior to the 2015 season. The Jumbos won the 2014 national championship with Kirwan serving as the offensive coordinator to complement back-to-back conference titles. The 2014 team amassed 423 goals, which stood as the highest single-season total by any team in history across all NCAA divisions at the time. Kirwan gained additional coaching experience at the professional level, spending multiple seasons implementing offensive schemes for the Boston Cannons and the Cannons Lacrosse Club. In 2021, Kirwan's offense ranked as the second most efficient attack in Premiere Lacrosse League history. Additionally, he assisted with draft strategy and roster management.A native of Boonton Township, New Jersey, Kirwan earned a bachelor's degree in child development and was a two-time All-American (2011 and 2012), plus a 2012 Academic All-American, at Tufts. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lax-all-stars/message
