‘That he lived to see 34 was surprising' – the violent life of Lee McDonnell

The Indo Daily

Lee McDonnell began what would become a prolific and fearsome career in crime when he was just a teenager. McDonnell's violent and reckless actions characterised him as a different breed of Irish criminal – one that stood sharply apart from his peers. He was fond of boosting his own notoriety and didn't seem to fear any reprisal, going so far as to publicly mock the prison system during his many stints behind bars. He even managed a high-profile escape that resulted in a nationwide manhunt. In total, McDonnell built up over 140 convictions and was suspected of numerous other crimes, including two unsolved murders and a recent high-profile stabbing. Last weekend, his lust for chaos came to an end when he died suddenly at the age of 34 after being found unresponsive in a Garda holding cell. On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Irish Independent news and security correspondent Robin Schiller to profile the life and crimes of the late Lee McDonnell. The deeper we go, the stranger it gets.GATEWAY: Three & Four is now live.A missing scientist.A military experiment losing control.A government program based on real declassified files that suggests the human mind may not simply imagine other places, other times, or other dimensions. It may be able to reach them.At a moment when UAP disclosures, intelligence programs, government secrecy, and the unknown are no longer living at the edge of the conversation, GATEWAY feels less like science fiction and more like a classified question we were never supposed to ask out loud.Inspired by the real declassified Gateway Process, Three & Four push Lt. Col. Wayne McDonnell beyond investigation and into something far more dangerous.Itzhak Bentov is pulled into the Monroe Institute to help McDonnell move deeper through the Gateway.General Addis wants control.Nurse Fields may know more than she is saying.McDonnell's mother reaches across a line she should not be able to cross. And somewhere between the physical world and the Gateway realm, the experiment stops being theory.Because once consciousness leaves the body, the question is not where it can go.The question is who else is already there. The past is not quiet. The future is not safe. And the Gateway is no longer waiting to be opened. It is open.Starring Zeke Alton, Petri Hawkins Byrd, Ashley Platz, Cam Clarke, Pasha D. We've all experienced those frustrating moments—forgetting where we put our keys, blanking on a name, or walking into a room and wondering why we're there. But when do these everyday memory slips cross the line from normal aging into something more serious? In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Michelle McDonnell, a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in cognitive assessment and dementia diagnosis. She helps us understand the crucial differences between the natural cognitive changes that come with aging and the warning signs of dementia that should never be ignored. With compassion and clarity, Dr. McDonnell walks us through what happens to our brains as we age, explaining why some forgetfulness is completely normal while other patterns demand attention. She shares real-world examples that illustrate the distinction, discusses the role of neuropsychological testing, and offers guidance on when to seek professional evaluation.

What does it take to make a plan at 16 - and still be executing on it at 32? Ashley McDonnell saw a Christian Dior exhibition in London as a teenager and decided she was going to work for Dior. She didn't know French. She'd never lived abroad. She had no connections in luxury. Six years later, she was walking into LVMH headquarters on Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Now she's back building in Ireland — founding Ireland Fashion Week, launching Vyko (Ireland's first luxury brand group), and building the kind of long game most founders don't have the patience for. In this episode she pulls back the curtain on how the luxury industry actually works, the psychology behind why people buy luxury, why China is the most important luxury market in the world, and the one piece of advice — focus — that changed everything. SHOW NOTES In this episode of The Entrepreneur Experiment, Gary sits down with Ashley McDonnell — founder of Ireland Fashion Week, Vyko Group and the Tech Powered Luxury podcast. Ashley spent over a decade working across LVMH, Christian Dior and Puig, one of Europe's biggest luxury groups, before coming home to build something entirely new. What you'll learn: How Ashley reverse-engineered her way from Galway to Christian Dior at 22 — by mapping the exact path the executives above her had taken Why the luxury industry is built on groups and conglomerates — and what that means for Irish brands trying to scale The psychology of luxury buying — from unlimited budget shoppers to the strategic Chinese traveller saving 20% per handbag Why 90% of luxury sales were offline pre-Covid but almost 100% were digitally influenced What Vyko is — and why Ashley is building Ireland's first startup luxury group from scratch The one-note iPhone system she uses to track every single day of the year across Paris and Dublin Why focus (not ideas) was the advice that changed everything Connect with Ashley: Personal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ash.mcdonnell/ Vyko Group: https://www.instagram.com/vykogroup/ Ireland Fashion Week: https://www.instagram.com/irelandfashionweek/ Podcast: Tech Powered Luxury: https://www.instagram.com/techpoweredluxury/ *Our Sponsors * Nostra: https://bit.ly/nostra26 Azure: https://bit.ly/azure26  Follow The Entrepreneur Experiment: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/entrepreneurexperiment/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@entrepreneurexperiment

In this episode of the Grow A Small Business Podcast, host Troy Trewin interviews Daniel McDonnell co-founder of Maple Movement, shares how severe gut health issues during his professional Ironman career led him to discover the power of maple syrup as a natural fuel source and launch Maple Movement. What began as a house-deposit gamble quickly evolved into a fast-growing gut-friendly energy gel brand now stocked in 125+ stores across Australia and New Zealand. Daniel opens up about bootstrapping the business, learning margins from scratch, managing rapid growth from his living room, and transitioning to a 3PL. He dives into brand positioning, organic content strategy, subscription revenue, and building a lean, aligned team. It's a raw, practical story of turning personal pain into a scalable FMCG business with purpose and momentum. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Daniel McDonnell, the hardest part of growing a small business is keeping up with rapid growth before scalable systems are fully in place, especially during big sales months when demand spikes beyond operational capacity. He shared how he and his wife were packing nearly 95 orders a day from their living room while trying to maintain a personal brand touch, highlighting that the real challenge wasn't generating sales but managing growth sustainably while building the right infrastructure to support it. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Daniel said his favorite business book that's helped him the most is "Built to Sell" by John Warrillow — a practical guide about structuring and scaling a business so it's not dependent on the founder and becomes sellable. He's mentioned it shaped how he thinks about systems, value creation, and building something that can run beyond him. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? According to Daniel McDonnell, one podcast he highly recommends for small business growth is Chew the Fat by the Greive brothers, where they share real, relatable stories after building and exiting Realbase. He values listening to founders who have scaled and exited businesses, as their practical lessons help avoid costly mistakes. Daniel also emphasizes learning directly from experienced mentors and operators rather than figuring everything out the hard way. For him, real-world business conversations and founder-led insights have been the most impactful learning resources. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Daniel McDonnell would point to a tool that helps you systemize and scale without chaos, and one he personally recommends is Notion — it's where he organizes products, SOPs, content calendars, order processes, and more in one place so nothing slips through the cracks. He also emphasizes tools for automating the parts of your business that don't need manual work, like Mailchimp or Klaviyo for email automation, and Shopify + a good 3PL integration to handle orders cleanly as volume grows. For analytics and ads, basic dashboards like Google Analytics and Facebook/Meta Business Suite help you make smarter decisions instead of guessing. The key, he says, isn't having every tool under the sun — it's picking the ones that actually save you time and help you standardize your processes so the business can scale. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? According to Daniel McDonnell, on day one he would tell himself to raise far more capital than he thinks he needs, understand margins and cash flow from the start, and build scalable systems early—because growth can come fast, but without enough cash and structure, it becomes far more stressful than it needs to be. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Don't miss out on this opportunity to take your small business to new heights! Enjoyed the podcast? I'm so pleased to share this conversation with high performance rehab specialist, SJ McDonnell, who is leading the charge to integrate pelvic health into sports medicine at Sport Ireland. Our paths crossed many (many) years ago but we reconnected when SJ and I started having conversations about how to bring pelvic health into high performance sports - how to bring expertise into this field in a thoughtful way.We discussed lots of different ways to empower and educate athletes, coaches & medical staff about assessing and managing pelvic health conditions, including:the importance of the MC in sports & the challenges of bringing a nuanced approach to menstrual healththe level of information about pelvic health that is available to athletesthe difficulty with the diagnosis and management of LEA or dysmenorrhea in athletes who have limited access to medical appointmentsthat athletes may not seek help for a variety of reasonsand how a one size fits all approach to menstrual health is not a good strategy & how more training & understanding are required to improve the skills practitioners need to better support female athletesUltimately, there is a definite need to do a better job at integrating pelvic health into sport at every level, with the inclusion of psychological health into this domain as well, as there is a complex interplay between physical performance and mental wellbeing. SJ is leading a great team at Sport Ireland and is driving the conversation about creating a safe space for athletes to discuss menstrual & pelvic health. She shared how this approach has worked well for other issues such as sleep management for elite athlete and the lessons that could be applied in educating and involving athletes, coaches and medical support staff to develop an evidence based and fit for purpose approach to athletic pelvic health. Can't wait to see how this all evolves under SJ's leadership at Sport Ireland and beyond!and if YOU would like to learn more about menstrual health and the pelvic health needs of the younger female athlete, then The Menstrual Detective course could be exactly what you need - it comes with free (evergreen!) access to the mini course 'Pelvic Health for the Younger Female Athlete' and you can find all the details, along with all my other online courses, at CelebrateMuliebrity.comUntil next time, Onwards & Upwards, Mx #celebratemuliebrity

Guest Bio: Louise is an award-winning social media strategist, coach, four-time best-selling author, and the founder of SellOnSocial.Media Digital Marketing Agency & Academy. For the past 20 years, I've helped coaches and consultants grow their businesses with fresh perspectives and innovative AI-powered tools. Key Points: Social media is marketing, not a separate skill Louise didn't "get into social media" randomly; her foundation is traditional marketing. Social media is simply a modern channel for applying timeless marketing principles. The problem isn't social media itself; it's treating it as something different from marketing strategy. You don't need to like social media to use it well  Many business owners dislike social media or don't want to spend hours online and that's okay. Social media is not about becoming an influencer or going viral. For business owners, it's about using social platforms efficiently and intentionally to generate leads and opportunities. Followers ≠ business growth Having thousands of followers means nothing if you don't know how to convert attention into revenue. A person with zero followers and someone with 15,000 followers can have the same problem: no system to turn visibility into sales. Social media success is not about features, hacks, or trends, it's about strategy. The 5-step framework for using social media effectively 1.     Clarify your core offer 2.     Nail your messaging 3.     Show up with intent. 4.     Build a lead generation system 5.     Use AI as a co-pilot, not the driver  Expectations depend on your starting point Results vary based on size of your existing audience, email list strength and consistency of organic activity. Someone with a warm audience will see faster results than someone starting from scratch. Organic activity makes paid ads dramatically more effective. Organic activity + paid ads = leverage Ads work best when layered on top of consistent organic engagement. Cold ad accounts cost more and convert less. Platforms reward businesses that show up consistently before running ads. What a "lead" really means in social media A lead is someone who opts in; joins your list, attends a session, downloads something. Leads can be cold (just joined), warm (engaging) or hot (ready to buy). Most people don't buy immediately, social media supports direct, indirect, and future sales. Social media doesn't sell high-ticket services, conversations do Low-cost products can sell directly on social platforms. High-ticket services require lead generation, nurturing and sales conversations. You market online, but you sell offline. The real outcome of social media The goal isn't instant sales; it's building a pipeline of qualified prospects. Social media creates visibility, trust, and opportunity over time. Done right, it feeds a steady flow of future business. Bottom line: Social media works when it's treated as a strategic marketing system, not a content treadmill. Clear offers, strong messaging, intentional activity, and lead generation, not virality, drive real business results.   Guest Links: AI Powered Online 2026 Social Media Content Planner To help you create impactful content week in, week out! 1.     The 2026 content calendar with 950+ searchable dates and holidays 2.     An AI post generator for Story, Advice and Testimonial posts in your own voice (2 posts per month, free forever) 3.     High-converting post formats powered by smart prompts, so you can create content that works, in your own voice and tone 4.     Simple tools to plan and organize your content 5.     This smart tool helps you embrace AI as your co-pilot, so you create content easily in your voice and tone.     About Salesology®: Conversations with Sales Leaders Download your free gift, The Salesology® Vault. The vault is packed full of free gifts from sales leaders, sales experts, marketing gurus, and revenue generation experts. She calls herself a swimming vagabond! The deck at Fort Lauderdale buzzes, and at 70-years old, Peggy McDonnell brings the kind of energy that makes you want to put on your goggles. She didn't swim in high school or college. She found Masters after a move to Florida, chased a national title in the 200 IM, and shocked herself with an All-American time that arrived like lightning. Then life happened: knee surgery, a finicky neck, and an honest reckoning that made butterfly and breaststroke hard. Instead of stepping back, she pivoted—leaning into the 200 freestyle, rebuilding confidence, and choosing smarter, kinder training. We walk through how she trains mostly solo with plans from a trusted friend, then found a 20-year-younger partner who “busts her tail” and helped her return to racing after a multi-year competitive break. She shares practical details that Masters swimmers crave: three swim days a week, 3,400 to 3,800 yards when the stars align, and a simple long course test set that benchmarks fitness without breaking spirit. Her facility routine is a masterclass in persistence—Indian River State College, Leisure Square, and any open water that keeps the habit alive through closures, heater issues, and shifting schedules. It's the consistency, not the perfect pool, that moves the needle.Peggy's story widens beyond the stopwatch. She talks about a broken hand right as she aged up to 60 and still made nationals, her pick for a dream lunch with Mark Spitz, and two and a half decades of volunteering at a dog shelter that led to adopting a sweet, big shepherd after saying goodbye to a tiny chihuahua. And she lights up when recalling the “Golden Girls,” the relay crew who broke five yards records in a single season—only to be topped the next year, and loved the chase anyway. The throughline is grit with warmth: adapt your events, find a partner who pushes you, keep your rituals flexible, and let team joy carry you through. If you love Masters swimming, comeback stories, and practical training wisdom for aging athletes, you'll feel right at home here. Sorry to inform you, friends, but it's December already. The gift-giving season is here, and with it, if you're at all like us, a month filled with tremendous anxiety. We may love putting together a Comic Book Holiday Gift Guide, but we stress profusely over the actual process of selecting and distributing gifts to our friends and family. Thankfully, just in time, we spoke with Mutts cartoonist Patrick McDonnell about his latest book, The Gift of Everything, which truly helped us center ourselves during a tumultuous moment. Patrick McDonnell is one of our great living cartoonists. For more than thirty years, he has put everything of himself into his comic strip Mutts. It's where he goes to understand the world around him, using characters like Mooch and Earl to contextualize what's happening outside his panels and inside his very being. Reading his work, you get the impression that he's figured something out that you have not, but is that actually the case? We get to the heart of everything in today's conversation. The Gift of Everything is out now from Little, Brown and Company. It's a spiritual sequel to McDonnell's The Gift of Nothing, which was published twenty years ago. It tells the desperate story of Mooch searching for the perfect gift for his pal Earl, and discovering exactly that, but not in the manner he expected.
