We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, CONCACAF Champions Cup, and Canadian Premier League chat and interviews. All aboard the Vancouver Whitecaps runaway train. There's no stopping it and the final destination is unknown! What another fantastic week it's been in Whitecapsland. The team booked their berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup final with a 5-1 aggregate win over Inter Miami. They are now 90 minutes away from winning a major trophy and qualifying for both the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2025 FIFA Inter-continental Cup. Crazy times and we break it all down in this episode and ponder where this ranks both now and potentially in the club's history compared to the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl win and what impact it could have on the club and football in the city. We bring you an interview with Whitecaps defender Ranko Veselinovic about the victory, the season, his defensive partnership, and the reaction he's had back home in Serbia. Plus we chat with Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster, head coach Jesper Sorensen, and Ranko's centreback partner Tristan Blackmon. Plus we look at the Whitecaps' latest MLS win against Real Salt Lake, round up all the week's action in the CPL and Canadian Championship, talk football superstitions with Ranko Veselinovic and Tate Johnson, and music-wise Scottish band Baby Chaos begin their residency as our Album of the Month, we've another Britpop song from Supergrass, and another fun Wavelength. On this episode, Andrew is joined by first-time guest Cola TheLodger from the VOW Discord to play songs that only have one word in the title. Along the way, Andrew reminisces about the peculiar 80s phenomenon of white dog poo, the trauma of squishy sandals, and why Ipswich is (mercifully) less turd-laden these days. Dr. Sam brings his sharp ear and an unsettling amount of love for freaky remixes, while Andrew stirs the pot with a few eyebrow-raising picks (Iron Maiden, we're looking at you). Together, they traverse the highs and lows of music's forgotten gems, with enough tangents to make a GPS give up. Expect tales of childhood horrors, rants about CD singles, and a surprisingly deep discussion about Supergrass and the Manic Street Preachers. Oh, and a mission to prove that Nigel Farage is unfit to lead anything, let alone reform. Grab a drink, settle in, and prepare for musical musings with a side of irreverent nonsense. ### Riffs of the week #### Dr Sam's Riff - Bad Shout - Doublecross (opening) #### Andrew's Riff - Tigran Hamasyan - The Kingdom (1:30) ### Dr Sam's track choices 1. Ideas, experiments, imagination. So, what was the optimum Britpop™️ year? Academics, thinkers and BBC documentary makers have wrestled over this question for many a year. Possibly even as long as it takes to listen to Be Here Now.1993 - Yanks, go home?1994 - Maybe, perhaps definitely?1995 - Different class, I'd suggest? So where were we by the spring of 1996? Three years of evolution, trademarked Beatles and Kinks mimicking, and countless cans of Red Stripe had taken it's toll. Would it be perceived wisdom, or 21st century hallowed hindsight, to suggest the original spark of Britpop was beginning to flicker as the winds of pop change were ‘spicing' themselves up in the wings? There's no doubt that the all conquering 94/95 pop of Pulp, Supergrass, blur and Oasis were still casting a huge Union Jack shaded shadow over the charts. But, oh, there was so much more! (We've been here before, haven't we?)Big dance acts! (Some faceless, some disguised as wrestlers!)Big pop acts (Some a bit cheesy, some disguised as Eternal and Lighthouses!)Big legacy acts (Some a bit past it, some disguised as Queen, some having soap stars being sick in their hair!)But lest we forget, as 1996 got underway and the first BIG NOW of the year presented 4o Top Chart Hits for our delectation - whether your ‘flava' was pop, rock, dance or hippy - there was an unbridled swagger and confidence to the music. The decade had shaken off any allusions of baggy or grunge and was telling us we could indeed live forever. Viva Forever, as some might (and indeed will) say! Join author and all round 90s pop kid Neil Collins as we revisit NOW33 and the spring of 1996. 'Neil's new book International Velvet: How Wales Conquered the 90s Charts revisits the unforgettable Cool Cymru era when the Manics, Catatonia, Stereophonics, Super Furry Animals, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and many more won over the masses!Along the way rediscover how TV adverts were still providing a soundtrack to our denim purchases and drink breaks. How dads were very well catered for in the mid 90s (rock bands, not Louise!), what cassettes were in Neil's parents car as they attempted to break the traffic system of Paris, and why NOW33 has the best ending of ANY compilation EVER. And there's even honourable mentions for the Smurfs and Robson & Jerome! Don't look back in (too much) anger! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement.  While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave.  Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK.  Business was good, and it grew.  A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known.  The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era.  After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen.  It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers.  Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer.  Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded.  And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal.  Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album:     PULSARS's Info Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter:  https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/

Inspired by early punk and new wave, Adam Greenspan's journey through the vast soundscapes of the late 80s, to industrial and alt 90s, marked a lifelong immersion in music. With over 25 years in the industry, his career ignited with the engineering of Faith No More's "Album of the Year." Later, a serendipitous connection with fellow producer Nick Launay led to fruitful collaborations, shaping albums for luminaries such as Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Supergrass, The Cribs, and Refused. Greenspan's recent productions have garnered critical acclaim, notably securing a 2019 Mercury Prize shortlist for IDLES' "Joy as an Act of Resistance" and a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album with Thomas Dybdal's "All These Things." His return to IDLES resulted in a UK #1 album with "Ultra Mono," highlighting his enduring impact on contemporary music. Continuing to shape sonic landscapes, Greenspan's recent projects include works with Bloc Party and Flogging Molly. Tony Hoffer is most known for his colorful, gritty productions and mixes that pop out of the speakers. His work over the years spans across alternative, electronic, rock, pop and indie. Hoffer spent his early years in Miami making music on 2 cassette decks and a reel-to-reel machine. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles and went ‘hi-tech' upgrading to a Tascam 4-track cassette deck falling in love with music and the art of production. Tony started off playing guitar in ‘post-punk' bands and fell in love with sampling his favorite post-punk records (Cure, Chameleons, Bauhaus) into his own songs and productions. His big break was co-producing Beck's double Grammy nominated album ‘Midnite Vultures' which was a hybrid of intricate sampling and live playing. That initially led to him to working with Air, Phoenix and Supergrass. Some additional credits include: M83, The Kooks, Belle & Sebastian, Silversun Pickups, The Fratellis, Depeche Mode, Fitz & The Tantrums, Blondie, Metric, Chromeo, Dirty Heads, The Snuts, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Ziggy Marley. This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We're talking about a 90's band that most consider a 1 hit wonder alternative group. SPACEHOG is much more than most give them credit for. They were a unique band that carried the flag more for classic 70's glam and power pop than alternative & grunge. If you are a fan of Bowie, Queen, Iggy Pop, or T.Rex, you owe it to yourself to listen to the SPACEHOG catalog. The countdown has begun, it's 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and baby we're a SPACEHOG!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode covers a band that is clearly in the Forgotten category for most (well, except for that one song). You may think you know them, but you probably don't really know them… Until now. As always, our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Spacehog – “Cruel To Be Kind” from Resident Alien (1995)Spacehog – “The Horror” from The Craft (Music From The Motion Picture) (1996)Spacehog – “Goodbye Violet Race” from The Chinese Album (1998)Spacehog – “This Is America” from The Hogyssey (2001)Spacehog - “Let The Bee Sting You” from B-Side from The Hogyssey (2001)Spacehog – “Remains” from Wreckroom Session (2012)Spacehog – “I Wish You Well” from As It Is On Earth (2013)Spacehog – “Zeroes” from Resident Alien (1995)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Alternative rock musician David Raybuck released a powerful new single, "He Knows YourName," on November 1, 2023. This spiritually charged song offers solace and hope to those grapplingwith the weight of suicidal thoughts. "He Knows Your Name" is not just a song; it's a lifeline, a messageof love, and a reminder of the intrinsic worth every individual possesses.Inspired by the profound words of Psalm 139, which declare that we are wonderfully made and knownby God, this song encourages listeners to call on God for salvation and freedom from hopelessness. In aworld where far too many people believe they are a worthless and meaningless accident, DavidRaybuck offers a compelling counter-narrative found in scripture: that God is the one who createdyou, and he did not make a mistake by doing so.“He Knows Your Name” is the latest example of David Raybuck's unconventional use ofsecular-sounding music with lyrics that point people to God. Emotive melodies are woven togetherwith styles reminiscent of influential artists like Ryan Adams, Coldplay, and Tom Petty to create anexperience that is both catchy and unique. "I am very excited about this song because I believe God isgoing to use it to save lives, both physically and spiritually," says David Raybuck.(Check into the other songs David is releasing throughout the months in 2024. Check on Spotify or SoundCloud) David Raybuck David Raybuck is the prodigal singer-songwriter of spiritual alt-rock for music freaks, and he is on amission to help people encounter their Creator through music. With far too much generic and darkmusic in the world, David wants to reach the ears of music lovers who are stirred by original songs withundeniable beauty and creativity. He draws from the influences of incredible artists like Radiohead,The Beatles, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ween, Led Zeppelin, Elliot Smith, Supergrass, Air,Failure and many others to create music that is catchy yet unique, with flavorings of alternative rock, folk, grunge, & Americana that sound nothing like what people would expect from “Christian music”.While David is relatively new to the independent music scene at the age of 42, he has been writingmusic since his teenage years. In his youth, his musical efforts were selfishly motivated and led himdown a destructive path. But after rejecting Christianity for most of his life, David realized the error ofhis ways in his early 30s and is now dedicated to serving God and sharing his life-changing messagewith others.David lives with his wife Lindsay near Cleburne, Texas just south of Fort Worth, and he is a father ofseven children, pastor at a local church, and professional computer nerd. In the limited amount oftime these roles have spared him, he has continued to write a lot of music over the years, and now it isfinally time to spread it. David produced his debut 14-song album, The Prodigal, in his modest homestudio in 2022. Showbiz Now Magazine called it “one of the most idiosyncratic songwritingcollections released in recent memory as well as one of the finest gospel-themed albums in thelast quarter century.” David is currently working on his second album and is committed to releasingmuch more work in the future by drawing from new inspiration and over two decades of unfinished material.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DavidRaybuckMusicianInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/david.raybuck/YouTube:: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9TnXx2Vx6OOCRnjccARp1A

Rock music genres often get reduced to a "Big Four." For Grunge, it was Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. For Thrash, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer made the grade. In 90s Britpop, Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Suede got the nod. But as if often the case, the bands on the cusp are often as interesting or even more-so thanks to being just outside the spotlight. In the case of Supergrass, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones creep in as influences like their Britpop contemporaries, but the energetic attitude and willingness to embrace the chaos of The Who's rhythm section and the concise songwriting perfection of The Kinks helps their second album, 1997's In It for the Money, exceed not just their debut, but most of the Britpop catalog. Looking at the charts, it's not hard to see why killer singles like "Richard III," "Cheapskate," "Sun Hits The Sky" and "Late in the Day" failed to impact American radio and pop culture consciousness. While Blur had "woo-hoos" and Third Eye Blind had "do do do's," Supergrass ditched guitar solos for theremins and vintage synthesizers, constructing layered pop gems that deserve revisiting.   Songs In This Episode Intro - In It for the Money 27:40 - Sun Hits the Sky 31:42 - You Can See Me 35:45 - Going Out 40:08 - Tonight Outro - Richard III   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon.
