Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast
GRACIE FILMS. 20th CENTURY FOX. With Co-host Geoff Clarke and Guest Commentators Sean Davis and Josh Lee.
On this episode, Shashank and Barry discuss the political, historical, and social aspects of Season One of Discovery. On the news, we discuss a corruption scandal involving a government-appointed anti-corruption firm. Obvious connections to Cardassian tactics of deceit. The next news item is a farewell to Peter Allan Fields who passed away while we were on hiatus. Our main topic is a tad top-heavy as we get into the character of T'Kuvma, highlighting points of his opening speech and playing 'what-if' with his character. We ask questions about Burnham's choice to mutiny and what it implied about the type of character we are encountering. Finally, no conversation on season one is worth it without a look at the Mirror Universe arc within the season. There is also discussion on how streaming culture has begun a takeover of modern media consumption. This leads us to DSC being a product of this new reality, so we take time to discuss the implications that will have on Trek as a franchise.

A Star Trek: Discovery negyedik epizódja által indukált konteók adása (The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not For The Lamb’s Cry).
Heti témánk a Discovery évadzárója, a 'Such Sweet Sorrow' második epizódja. - A féreglyukon át: kielégítő vizuális megjelenítés, melyben a művészi megközelítést optimális szinten tartották, ráadásul a Csillagösvény effekt is visszatért. - Lezárt jellemfejlődések és hosszú búcsúzkodások: a Discovery legénysége számára tényleg nincs visszaút?
We know what you’re thinking: “When are those damn RTW guys going to read my mail?!?!?!? And furthermore, why bother phrasing this description this way when anyone who’s reading it obviously already knows what the name of the episode is?!” While we don’t have a decent answer for the second question, the answer for the first is RIGHT HERE! That’s right, we’ve gone through our email backlog, dating all the way back to July 2018, to catch up on all our listener mail! We’ve got mail from all over the world - or at least America and parts of Europe - from fans of all types! You’ll hear your mail read, and hear the RTW crew respond to some of your burning questions, like what our Trek alien ability would be, what our favorite uniforms are, what kind of job we might want in the Federation, where Star Trek went wrong (and why it was either Voyager or Enterprise), and the elephant in the room. Also be on the lookout for a couple new jingles and an old favorite. If you’ve been cramping up waiting for us to read your email, rest assured it will be read here! We love our listeners, and we love hearing from them! If you’d like to hear us read and respond to your emails on a future episode, email us at reopeningthewormhole@gmail.com and don’t forget! We need listener input for our upcoming final episode, coming some time later this year! Send us your top DS9 episodes in order, as well as any other thoughts, questions, or concerns you may have! Standard Orbit 210: Foreheadgate The Evolution of the Klingons. There are few races in Star Trek as iconic as the Klingons. Introduced in the first season of The Original Series, the warrior race remains as relevant as ever over fifty years later playing an integral role in the latest entry in the franchise, Discovery. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore talk the Klingons' ever-changing appearance from Kor to T’Kuvma, if the franchise may have gone too far in explaining out-of-universe production aesthetics in-universe, and how the Klingons are forever tied to the Romulans. Also, Zach proves to be prophetic in his prediction of a certain starship's appearance in Discovery's season finale. Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast
Well, it took a while but it’s finally here! The season finale of Star Trek: Discovery has come and gone, but not Jack’s Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast! In fact, to celebrate (?) this momentous occasion, Jack has made some phone calls and managed to gather together every single guest that has appeared on the podcast to date for a massive STD orgy! That’s right, old pal and JSLFNSTDP mainstay Barm, Ferengi/Mycelial Network expert Kregg Castillo, Jack’s ApeCast co-host Geoff Clarke, his Reopening the Wormhole co-hosts Sam Stovold and Kevin Young, and Ghibli Minute co-host Richard Dunham all drop by to witness the epic struggle between Continuity Carlos and his Mirror counterpart, say “T’Kuvma” a lot, describe the gritty Jetsons reboot the world needs right now, and just chat about the future of the mycelial network, Klingon penises, Twin Peaks, the Enterprise, about what works and what doesn’t in Discovery, what’s gonna happen on this podcast until season 2, and attempt to describe the entire show so far in one word. Once you enter Mr. T’Kuvma’s house, you’ll never want to leave! T’KUVMA!
As the newly appointed Captain of the Discovery, Mirror Georgiou is sent on a mission by the remaining Starfleet leadership to end the Federation-Klingon war, once and for all. She uses Stamets to jump the ship inside one of the vast caves of Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld. Once there, Mirror Georgiou assembles an away team - consisting of Michael Burnham, Ash Tyler, and Cadet Tilly - to join her to supposedly plant a drone that would map critical military targets for the Federation. Burnham suspects there is more to this mission than the mapping exercise and her suspicions are confirmed when Tilly learns Georgiou actually aims to embed and detonate a powerful bomb that will destroy Qo'noS, effectively crippling the Vulcan empire and saving the Federation from annihilation. Outraged that Federation leaders have sanctioned this action, Burnham effectively argues to Admiral Cornwell that the Federation cannot jettison its own moral principles to win the war, even in the face of eradication by the enemy. After other crewmembers demonstrate their support for Michael’s line of reasoning, the Admiral acquiesces and accepts a different option. Michael retrieves the mega bomb’s detonator from Georgiou and gives it to L’Rell. Burnham and Tyler convince the Klingon that with such a device as leverage, she would be able to convince the feuding houses to unite as one following the teachings of T’Kuvma. The episode ends with the awarding of Starfleet’s medal of honor to Discovery officers and the knowledge Burnham has been pardoned and reinstated as a Starfleet Commander.
The Dilithium Mining operation on Corovan II is under attack by the Klingons and Discovery hasn’t long to get its Displacement Activated Spore Hub Drive or DASH drive operational. While this eludes the crew, we also find Voq and L’Rell and the crew of T’Kuvma’s ship starving and adrift for 6 months in Federation space (completely vulnerable but also completely safe somehow)
In this episode, we take a look at IDW’s first Star Trek Discovery comic book, “The Light of Kahless”. Join us as we give the book the deep-dive, as well as talk a bit about the Issacs/Shatner debacle, Black Mirror’s U.S.S. Callister trailer, and the Quenton Tarantino pitch to Paramount.

Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast
The “midseason finale” of Jack’s Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast is finally here, and it WAS WORTH THE WAIT. In this mega-sized and laugh-filled look at “Into the Forest I Go”, Jack has assembled all of the previous guests (and one new one!) under one (Skype) roof and they can hardly contain themselves, or even ever just stop saying the word “T’Kuvma”. They’re here to bust a gut talking about Klingon boobs, Starfleet sideburns, crazy plot theories, the BEST way to open doors and turn on lights, George Lucas’s plans for Star Trek Special Editions, the nuttiness of Lorca’s plan and so much more. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll be able to help Continuity Carlos step out from under Jack’s shadow and become his own man.
Great to have Sarah back. Lots of terrific IDW trek comics are happening now. The Star Trek Boldy Go series set in the JJ Abrahms film universe started a new multi universe story called IDIC. She also previews the Discovery prequel series focusing on T'Kuvma and The Kingon Deathship crew cominng later this month, and more. Plus we cant help talking about the new streaming series, with the fall hiatus starting next week. Good thing there's plenty of quality IDW trek comics to get us to the Jan half of the season.

When this series concludes if it turns out we were right, we'll be sure to remind you. A weird mind-meld may mean Sarek had reason for placing his ward on the Shenzou. Did he have foreknowledge that ship would bump into the Klingons? Did Michael? Get your remote control out and be ready to hit "pause". Gary and Addell discuss Episode 4, "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry." Lorca assigns Burnham to study the creature from the Glenn, dubbed a Tardigrade, to find a way to use its biology as a weapon. Starfleet orders Discovery to the dilithium mining colony Corvan II, which is under Klingon attack. Stamets is reluctant to make such a long jump using the spores, and when the drive is activated the ship nearly collides with a star. Lorca sends Commander Landry to keep Burnham's research on track, and she attempts to sedate the Tardigrade (that she names Ripper) to cut off its claw; it kills her. Burnham believes that Ripper was acting in self-defense, and is drawn to the spores. Stamets and Burnham transport it to Engineering, where it connects to the spore drive and interfaces with the navigation system. The ship successfully makes the jump to Corvan II and saves the colony. On T'Kuvma's stranded ship, Klingon leader Kol earns the loyalty of T'Kuvma's desperate followers, and leaves Voq to die in the wreckage of the Shenzhou. L'Rell, secretly loyal to Voq, promises a way for them to win the war for the house of T'Kuvma. Star Trek: Age of Discovery is a fan podcast for the CBS All-Access show STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. Mutiny, roommates, old-friends, black alerts, spores, and a scary captain — sound like Star Trek to you? We are here to unpack it all, as the show attempts to set the table for what continues to feel like a fresh take on Star Trek. Universal law is for lackeys, context is for kings!
Six months into her sentence, Burnham is on an unexpected prison transfer when an emergency forces her shuttle to be rescued by the USS Discovery. Spending several days on the ship, Burnham is ordered by its captain, the mysterious Gabriel Lorca, to assist with a scientific assignment. Burnham overhears Lieutenant Paul Stamets, an astromycologist who is leading the assignment, discuss an upcoming experiment with a colleague serving on another starship; Lorca is soon informed of an incident on the Discovery's sister ship, the USS Glenn, that has killed the entire crew. Stamets leads a boarding party to investigate and finds the dead crew hideously twisted and malformed, as well as a group of Klingons killed by an unknown creature. Lorca later asks Burnham to work for him, despite her sentence, explaining that he organized the circumstances that led her to him so she could help develop a new spore-based propulsion system that could win the war she started by killing T'Kuvma. He also secretly has the creature transported aboard the Discovery. Star Trek: Age of Discovery is a fan podcast for the CBS All-Access show STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. Talking Through Battle at the Binary Stars On Sunday, September 24th, CBS All Access made available S1E2 of Star Trek: Discovery, titled Battle at the Binary Stars, immediately following the airing of S1E1, The Vulcan Hello, on CBS. Since many people in the U.S. didn’t have CBS All Access and still don’t, they want to know: Should they watch this show? Should they pay for CBS All Access? Should they wait, and binge it, or buy it now and watch week to week? We answer those questions, at least most of them, in this week’s episode. In this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, we analyze Season 1 Episode 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, titled “Battle at the Binary Stars”. We also discuss, after the first two episodes, our experiences so far with CBS All Access, and give our advice about watching each week, waiting and binging or not watching at all. Read More… Is Star Trek: Discovery Star Trek? Star Trek: Discovery is not your father’s Star Trek. You know the uniforms and the Klingons look different, but it goes beyond that. The producers have changed a lot more, added a few new wrinkles to some things, and created new things within the universe. But, is it still Star Trek? I believe the answer is yes. If you can accept some changes to what you’re used to, then this Star Trek is for you. If you can’t accept that their uniforms are anything except what you see in “The Cage”, and that the bridge doesn’t look like a classic bridge a la NCC-1701, then move on. Stick to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. At least they still act like Klingons! Though the producers have been coy about it, I believe that Star Trek: Discovery is a partial re-imagining of the franchise. They’ve kept story canon, for the most part, but they have changed the look and much of the technology. They could have saved themselves a lot of grief by announcing this as a re-imagining of the franchise, or by not changing as much as they did. I’m still scratching my head as to why they felt it necessary to change the look of the Klingons so much, but it is what it is. I hope it may be explained, but the most important part is that they still act like Klingons, and if they had changed their behavior, I would be objecting a lot more than I am now. So, should you watch Star Trek: Discovery? We believe the answer is yes. We think it will be a great season, and great TV, but different than the Trek we grew up with. Should you get CBS All Access? We think so… but whether you wait and binge, or watch weekly, that’s up to you; whether you don’t want to be spoiled online because you haven’t seen it, want to share with the online community as it airs, or you’re more than comfortable binging it and watching later is a major determining factor. However, if you’re waiting for it to come onto another streaming provider in the US, like Netflix, think again. CBS is building their whole streaming service around the Star Trek franchise. This is going to become more commonplace, not less, with other content providers. It’s unlikely, though not impossible, that Discovery will be available on Netflix in the future. If that happens, it won’t be soon. What about the episode itself? SPOILER ALERT! This episode ends with a few major twists. Captain Phillipa Georgiou and T’Kuvma are dead, the Shenzhou has been destroyed, the Federation and the Klingon Empire are at war, and Burnham has been court-martialed and received a life sentence. We’ve not even seen the USS Discovery yet! “The Vulcan Hello” and “Battle at the Binary Stars” play together like a 2-hour TV movie prequel. It’s like the rest of the season will
Discovery has finally aired and we have a lot to unpack! We briefly talk about additional thoughts on CBS All-Access before diving head-first into our review of “The Vulcan Hello” and “Battle at the Binary Stars”. We finish up the show with a follow up poll on Star Trek theme songs and listener feedback.
Talking Through The Vulcan Hello It’s been a long wait, but Star Trek: Discovery is finally here!!! For this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I cover the pilot, Season 1 Episode 1, titled The Vulcan Hello. Overall, we’re cautiously optimistic, with some enthusiasm on some things and nagging issues on others. We’ll cover Season 1 Episode 2, titled Battle at the Binary Stars, later this week. The verdict’s still out for some We know some of you, especially in the U.S., are undecided as to whether or not you will watch the show. Perhaps you will wait until you can binge-watch it before you pay the monthly fee, or maybe you want to wait and see what people think of it before committing to yet another bill. If you are in Canada, have the show available on Netflix or have decided to pay for access in the U.S. now, perhaps you are going to watch it weekly like we are. I’m not going to write this post to try to get you to sign up, but if and when you do, we’ll be here for you! What’s MY verdict? Overall, we’re cautiously optimistic, with some enthusiasm on some things and nagging issues on others. When we recorded Monday night, I had not yet seen episode two, but I have now. Some of my opinions changed after that episode. Some changed for the positive, and a few for the negative. On the whole, I am pleased and can’t wait for next week’s episode! However, I’m still asking why they made the changes they did. I’ve decided to just accept them and watch the show based on its own merit. We’ll be back in a few days! We will be recording again Thursday night, covering Season 1 Episode 2, “Battle at the Binary Stars“. If you want to get in feedback, one of the best ways to do that is via our Facebook group.
Gary and Addell review the two-part premiere, "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars." Investigating a damaged satellite near a binary star system on the edge of Federation space, the crew members of the USS Shenzhou discover an object obscured from their sensors. After First Officer Michael Burnham volunteers to investigate the object, she finds an ancient, carved vessel. She is attacked by a Klingon, and when trying to escape, she accidentally kills him. A group of Klingons mourn the death of their soldier, dubbed the "Torchbearer", before the outcast Voq volunteers to take his place. The Klingons, led by T'Kuvma, reveal themselves in a cloaked ship. T'Kuvma preaches to his followers of the Federation's attempts to usurp the individuality of the Klingons and their culture and plans to fulfill an ancient prophecy by uniting the 24 great Klingon houses as was once done by Kahless. Voq activates a beacon that summons the Klingon leaders. Burnham, desperate to prevent a war, attempts to fire on the Klingons first, against the wishes of Captain Philippa Georgiou. Burnham is arrested for mutiny. T'Kuvma convinces the majority of the Klingon leaders that he can lead them to victory over the Federation, as reinforcements for the Shenzhou arrive. Georgiou offers to resolve the situation peacefully, but the Klingons immediately open fire. Starfleet Admiral Anderson arrives and again offers peace to the Klingons, but his ship is rammed by another cloaked Klingon vessel. Anderson has his ship self-destruct, destroying the Klingon ship as well. Starfleet retreats, leaving the Klingons to collect their dead. In the remains of the Shenzhou, Burnham escapes her cell after encouragement from her guardian Sarek via a telepathic connection. She convinces Georgiou to try to take T'Kuvma prisoner, and they create a distraction by sending an explosive into his ship with a Klingon corpse. Boarding the vessel, Burnham overpowers Voq. Georgiou attempts to capture T'Kuvma but is killed. T'Kuvma is fatally shot by Burnham, who is transported to safety. Voq promises that T'Kuvma's legacy will live on.
