In this episode, we share multiple presentations given by Paul Stamets, a leading mycologist and advocate for the medicinal use of fungi. He delves into the transformative potential of psychedelics, mycology, and their implications for healing and environmental restoration. Paul shares insights from his extensive research and experiences, including his work on the documentary Fantastic Fungi and his passion for uncovering the intelligence of nature through mushrooms. He discusses the remarkable capabilities of various fungi, from their medicinal properties to their role in ecological balance, and highlights the urgent need for a paradigm shift in our understanding and use of these powerful organisms. Although illegal as a Schedule I drug in much of the United States and beyond, two states have approved use of psilocybin mushrooms in therapeutic settings, and many more states are reviewing their policies. Schedule I drugs are defined as drugs with a high potential for abuse or drugs with no recognized medical uses. However, psilocybin mushrooms have had numerous medicinal and religious uses in dozens of cultures throughout history and let's face it, mushrooms are not addictive. Paul Stamets is one of the leading advocates worldwide for opening up the possibility of legalizing. Paul introduces listeners to several key mushroom species, and beyond psychedelics they have important medical and therapeutic uses in treatment of diseases. He emphasizes the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge with modern science, revealing how traditional practices can inform and enhance our approach to health and wellness. With a focus on the potential of psilocybin mushrooms to address mental health challenges and promote community healing, Paul inspires hope for a future where fungi play a crucial role in both personal and planetary health. Bit of a double-filler show this week, as Michael drops in on the folks and Pike decides to chill with Tyler in "Light and Shadows". Just kind of spinning our wheels here until we FINALLY see Spock, tho he's not really in a state to do much more than be there. Back with the ship, we're laying some groundwork for later payoff, maybe? Also we remember Stamets has a weird relationship with time. Also this week: time prefixing, evil tech squids, and familiar faces! [Timestamps: Light and Shadows: 01:29; It's Full of Guest Stars: 48:19] [Hey, it's you!: https://sshbpodcast.tumblr.com/post/782279174919454720/hes-from-that-other-star-trek]
We're bouncing hard and fast between plots this week, and they don't quite gel. In "Saints of Imperfection" Section 31 is in everyone's face, which is weird for a supposedly-secret organization, and Stamets continues the search for Tilly...and finds someone very unexpected. Well, unexpected in-universe. In the real world we all knew it was coming. Also this week: Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, and recasting "Voyager"! [timestamps: Spacedock Saints: 00:34; Voyager casting: 49:58] [d'blog: https://www.tumblr.com/sshbpodcast/780387436607029248/fantasy-casting-voyager?source=share]
We've got three plots this week and somehow almost nothing happens in "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum"! We finally have an away mission and Saru goes a bit nuts, which is certainly very "Trek". Meanwhile, Stamets is feeling the strain of being a living navigational computer. And L'Rell meets Cornwell. Yup. Also this week: belated holiday, The Simpsons, and T'Pol! Captain Burnham, Commanders Rayner, and Stamets must manage their way through a series of time jumps through Discovery's past and possible future as they attempt to disarm a dangerous time weapon. The device traps the ship in a time cycle related to its 900+ year history. Only Michael, Rayner, and Stamets know what is happening, so they must find a way to break the cycle without significantly altering the known timeline. The time is getting VERY *wimey* in this episode of Discovery. Just as the crew heads to the coordinates they got from the ancient Trill host Jinaal scratching their heads at an empty pocket of space, Moll's trap is sprung. Apparently, she put a "time bug" on their ship which, once it connected to the ship's engineering, causes them to hop about willy-nilly in time. Thus, are Michael and Rayner sent on a merry chase through Discovery's past -- and one harrowing presentiment of their future. They'll have to band together with Stamets, who is always somewhat out of time (so to speak), to kill the bug and get back to the present. And the race to get to the Progenitor Tech. Should be simple... unless Michael and her past-self have to duke it out in an elevator. But what are the chances?
Psychedelic revolution or schismogenesis? Robert Forte is basically the Forrest Gump of the psychedelic world. He's been in the gam with some of the biggest names in psychedelic history, Grav, Leary, Sholgren, Stamets, Doblin, the list goes on. In this conversation Robert lays out one of my favorite things in the world, an alternate narrative to the one we've been presented around psychedelics. Robert presents us with a deep history of psychedelics as a weapon on the American public. Some of the players are surprises to me and I think you'll be as delighted as I was to hear the big name drop. The details are substantial, please dispel some disbelief and use your own discernment. What's up to my steadfast cetaceans and loquacious loons! Welcome back to the BNP and thank you so much for joining! We got a fun one for ya this week folks, a real smorgasbord of podcasting piquancy. You already know we got those zany audio tidbits- and those who enjoy the Bro Vibin skits are gonna be as satisfied as a koala bear at a bamboo shit-paper plant. Your veggies this week are nuanced, well-seasoned and colorful, though they hail from the fungal rather than plant kingdom. That's right folks, we're talking about the blue apples, the zoom zooms, the goomers and the toadstools... it's mushroom week at the BNP! Any discussion of mushrooms in the modern age worth its weight in, well, shrooms, has to include the great American mycologist Paul Stamets, and this ep is no exception. I feature a 2019 interview with Stamets where he speaks on the mycelial network that really ties the forest together, does it not? Stamets argues persuasively that these mycelial webs are neurological networks for nature, and points out that mycelium mats are living organisms that span hundreds of acres and live for thousands of years.... whoa. As well, I'm listening right now to Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Notes From Underground, and I offer some thoughts about the prose itself as well as the significance it carries for our modern times and our battle against transhumanism and the A.I. apocalypse. Finally, I include a recent Barbarian Yak Fest segment with Dr. Sylvie where we discuss the bombing of the Georgia Guidestones, the "Stonehenge of the U.S." This week's outro features the iconic Mexican mushroom shamaness Maria Sabina. Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast
Jaxilly is breaking down barriers with the help of Discovery holdouts Sam and Sean again (Jack's saviors)! Like our intrepid heroes on Discovery, the boys jump from topic to topic to get to the end of the episode. Notables include taking an immediate liking to this Hirai fellow, celebrating the return of Cronenberg, cringing at the increasingly uncomfortable relationship between Stamets and Adira, Picard Prognosticatin', Tarka Talk, the intersection of science and Final Fantasy, the joys of talking like Saru, a truly EPIC rant, and FENNEC. FUCKING. SHAND. Cross the barrier to FUN.
