Jonathan Parker writes, directs and produces films which blend together the aspects of art he gravitates toward, including architecture, music, storytelling and intricate attention to detail. The Northern California native grew up in an artistic family, and studied English at Stanford. It was when he joined a New Wave band, and directed their first music video that he discovered film's nature of acting as a matrix for his artistic interests. After directing several short films, Jonathan wrote and directed his first feature film — Bartleby —an adaptation of Herman Melville's short story: Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street. The film marked the first of several feature film collaborations with Catherine DiNapoli, with whom he co-wrote the screenplay. He included a satirical bent relevant to his time and place (just as Melville did in the 1850s) in his adaptation, which starred David Paymer, Glenne Headly, and Crispin Glover playing the eponymous character. He continued this philosophy as he embarked on his next film — The Californians — an adaptation of Henry James's The Bostonians. The film, which starred Noah Wyle, Ileana Douglas, Kate Mara and Keith Carradine, premiered on Showtime and surveyed the conflicted love-triangle between an idealistic real estate developer (Wyle); his environmentalist sister (Douglas); and the protest folk singer who comes into their lives (Mara). Jonathan's own experience as a real estate developer informed the film's scenic undertone, the characters' diverse perspectives and their motivations. This theme of incorporating personal experience into narrative film carried into his next project — (Untitled) — which starred Adam Goldberg, and followed an experimental musician's plight into the New York City art scene; and in The Architect, starring Parker Posey, Eric McCormack and James Frain, which explores the confluence of a couple who's vision of “the perfect home” is in diametric opposition and an eager, theoretically-motivated architect as he attempts to construct their dream home. The former was scored by David Lang, who won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Music. His latest work is the documentary film Carol Doda Topless at the Condor, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2023 and navigates the rise to fame of an influential San Franciscan topless dancer in 1964. Jonathan co-directed the film with Marlo McKenzie, while Lars Ulrich serves as a producer. The film analyzes Doda's impact on the sociocultural narrative of feminism, free speech, fashion and politics in the United States. In our conversation, we discussed Jonathan's journey into music and film; imbuing each of his projects with his own personal experiences; and the unique story of Carol Doda's plight in San Francisco.Opening Credits: 1st Contact - Cavemen I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0); The New Mystikal Troubadours - A Cinematic Influence I Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US). Star Trek (2009) directed by J.J. Abrams was a game changer for Star Trek, which had lain dormant since the cancellation of Enterprise. This movie brought it back to our screens. It was an exciting time. The decision to do a "soft reboot" in canon using time travel and an alternate timeline was a clever concept and brought in a new generation of fans. But what does this movie have to do with the new Star Trek Picard, which will be set back in the original prime timeline? Plenty. The inciting incident of this movie takes place in the prime timeline, and this event will have a profound effect on the life of Jean-Luc Picard. Join us as we conclude our countdown of the 10 episodes and movies you should watch before Star Trek Picard. Next week, we look at the first episode of Picard! ----more---- Welcome to Nerd Heaven. I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of the stars. And I am a nerd. This is episode 10 of the podcast. Today we finish our look at the 10 episodes and movies that you should watch before Star Trek Picard. Today, we’re looking at JJ Abram’s Star Trek 2009 movie, because although it creates a whole new Star Trek timeline, it’s inciting incident takes place in the prime universe, and its impact will have a profound effect on Jean-Luc Picard’s life. The IMDB description for this movie reads The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time. This movie first appeared in cinemas on the 6th of April 2009 Punch it. I was very excited about the impending release of this movie. Star Trek was back! Ever since the cancellation of Enterprise, Star Trek had been dead. The franchise was off the air. We didn’t know when or if we’d ever see it again. Paramount decided to bring it back in the form of movies, and hired JJ Abrams to create the first one. Some fans were very cautious about this movie. Claims that this movie would be more open to wider audiences, suggested it would lack the heart and soul of Star Trek. I too was cautious, but optimistically so. I just wanted a good story. I wanted Star Trek back. One of the first things you notice when this movie stars is the lens flare. A common trick to make CGI look more realistic is to add a little lens flare. To give the illusion that these computer-generated images were shot with a real camera. JJ wanted to go for a very realistic believable star Trek universe, so he added a lot of lens flare to his cgi. And so it didn’t look out of place, he also added a lot of lens flare to the live-action footage. Except, in my opinion, he went way overboard. They actually had people on set with torches, (sorry, flashlights, for you American listeners) shining light into the lens of the camera. It’s a bit distracting. But, it’s his style. The next big thing you notice is that the viewscreen is a window. And communication messages appear as translucent overlays on that window. It could be argued that the bridge of the enterprise shouldn’t be right up the top of the saucer. It’s a vulnerable position. There’s no need for it. It’s not like they’re looking out a window. JJ Abrams and his team were trying to provide a justification for the position of the bridge, and so, they made the viewscreen an actual window. I wasn’t a fan of this approach and was disappointed when Star Trek Discovery followed suit. But we get an epic space battle. Right up front, we realise this will be a much more action-packed star trek. And that was welcome. Star Trek movies had always fell a little flat on the action front. Even the borg battle in First Contact was over way too quickly. I love the scene where someone gets blown out of the ship due to a hull breach and it suddenly goes silent, because, of course, there is no sound in the vacuum of space. Nice touch. Very atmospheric. So this ship is the USS Kelvin. Named after JJ Abram’s father. It has been suggested, by some fans, that in-universe, this ship could be named after William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, after whom the kelvin unit of temperature is named. But to my knowledge, this isn’t canon. The captain of the Kelvin is taken on board the Romulan ship. They ask what he knows of Ambassador Spock. I love that they call him Ambassador, linking back to the next generation. There are some cool looking aliens on the Kelvin. Some nice creature effects on the bridge, and a midwife with funny eyes. It’s nice to see some more alien aliens on Star Trek. But the lack of any familiar races at all, kinda makes it feel a little more like Star Wars than Star Trek. It would have been nice to throw in an Andorian in the background somewhere. We get some very emotional music during the birth scene. And there are little to no sound effects in this scene. We just hear hte music as Kirk’s mother gives birth, and the ships battle it out. This technique was sometimes used on Babylon 5, to amazing effect. I loved it there, and I love it here. Very effective. This whole sequence as George Kirk asks about his newborn son and says goodbye to his wife is fantastic. I always give this movie a lot of credit for making me cry before the opening title even appears. Powerful stuff. I Love this teaser. Always have. But one question. Where do the shuttles go? How do they escape the Narada? Do they have warp drive? As as the title card comes up, we are treated to the new theme music. This film was scored by Michael Giacchino. He wrote quite different music, but it was great stuff. I like the kid kirk driving sequence. I love how his communicator is a Nokia brand. Yes, this is product placement, but to me, these touches add elements of believability to the world. The boy he passes on the street is supposed to be his older brother George. There was a deleted scene where he was leaving home because of their abusive stepfather. That scene was cut. And yes, I like the rock music. Maybe it doesn’t fit star trek, but that’s ok. I also liked the Enterprise theme song and thought it gave the show a more contemporary feel, which was suitable since the show was set closer to present day. Maybe it’s less suitable in the 23rd century. Spock is wrestling with his identity as both Vulcan and human. At first, his father suggests that although he is half-human he should live his life fully Vulcan. But later tells him he should choose his own path. Spock chooses the Vulcan way of life, and yet, he has concerns that his mother will consider this an insult against her. I like this. Then the Vulcan leader insults his mother, referring to her as a disadvantage. The way Spock says “Live long and prosper” speaks volumes. It carries a very different message. Nice acting by Zachery Quinto. Kirk flirting with Uhura seems…...weird. But I can understand it. He’s a young guy, she’s an attractive woman, and she’s not an officer under his command. Kirk isn’t even in Starfleet, just a very intelligent delinquent kid. So we get Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike. And he does a good job of It. Pike gives that weird line about the Federation being a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada. First of all, he’s confusing the Federation with Starfleet. The federation is a political coalition of planets. Starfleet is their “armada” if you want to call it that, although that word carries very military connotations. Starfleet both is and isn’t a military. It’s confusing, but yes, it’s focus is on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, as well, of course, as exploration. We see the Enterprise begin constructed on the ground in Iowa. Obviously something in this new timeline changed, causing it to be built here instead of at the San Francisco shipyards (which we assume are orbital) This movie presents us with a very different Kirk. In the original timeline, Kirk wasn’t a brash delinquent. He was a nerd. Constantly carrying books around. This, of course, is explainable, given he grew up without a father (he had a step father but he was a real deadbeat.) And then we meet McCoy. I like how we finally get an explanation for Kirk’s nickname for him - Bones. Makes good sense. And it canonises that McCoy has been married but is now divorced. The Romulans we see in this movie are not like any Romulans we’ve seen before. But these are not military officers. They’re labourers. And they’ve been through some really bad stuff, so again, I’m cool with all that. It’s pretty cool that we get to see Kirk taking the Kobayashi maru test. Notice he’s eating an apple, just like he is when he tells the story of this day in Star Trek 2. Spock hits pretty low when he references Kirk’s father during the hearing. And then we get the Paul McGillion cameo. At the time this movie was in production, Paul McGillion was playing Dr. Carson Becket on Stargate Atlantis, a character with a Scottish accent. A very popular character. And there was a fan movement to get him cast as Scotty in this movie. It would have been a nice choice. But JJ Abrams had worked with Simon Pegg on Mission Impossible and was determined to cast him as Scotty. He did, however, give McGillion a little role as the officer assigning people their posts as the cadets are called into active duty because of an emergency at Vulcan. So we learn that Spock and Uhura have a relationship. This was a very odd choice, which somehow kind of works. And we finally get our first proper full look at the enterprise. And she looks pretty good. Pretty close to the original version, and again, because this is a changed timeline, I’m willing to accept the differences. It’s a pretty decent modern re-imagining of the original. I can’t say the brewery engineering room quite works for me, but hey, they tried something. I don’t have an issue with Checkov being on the bridge, even though we never saw him in TOS until season 2. First of all, yes, that alternate timeline defence, and second, Checkov could have been on the ship during season 1, we just never saw him on screen. In fact, we know that he must have been because Khan recognises him in Star Trek 2, canonising this theory. I Love how Kirk is still flirting with every woman that passes him, even though he’s really sick. He reminds me of Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who. So Vulcan is being attacked by a Romulan ship. The ship we first saw in the teaser. Nero’s ship. The Nerada This ship looks really cool. It’s mean and it’s powerful. But it’s supposed to be a mining ship. It makes no sense that it would be this powerful. The non-canon countdown comic tries to explain this. I don’t quite buy into it. The characters know a little too much about Romulans for the time when this movie is set. Remember, they don’t yet know that Romulans are related to the Vulcans. But they were probably pushed into closer investigation into them after the Kelvin incident. We get some Awesome visuals as the Enterprise drops out of warp in the middle of a debris field from the attack. It was very nice to see Star Trek with modern big-budget effects. This was a big step forward from Nemesis, the last time we’d seen Trek on the big screen. So Nero demands pike come aboard, leaving Spock in command, and cadet Kirk is promoted to first officer. Quite unlikely, but I guess Pike sees something in Kirk. So this movie kills a redshirt in true Star Trek tradition. Of course, he’s not wearing a red shirt because they’re in spacesuits. And he’s an aussie. But given his accent, I doubt the actor is Aussie. It’s a shame that one of the very few Australians to appear in Star Trek is such an idiot. The battle on the drill is pretty thrilling. And I do like Sulu’s fold-out sword. Say what you will about this movie, it’s an effective action film. They beam Kirk and Sulu from their freefall. They crash onto the platform. But if they maintained the same velocity, shouldn’t that impact have killed them. The new transporter effect is kinda cool. The way it swirls around each individual part of the body. So Vulcan is being destroyed by creating a black hole at the centre of the planet. So they beam up the Vulcan leadership and Spock’s family, but Spock’s mother, Amanda. Doesn’t make it. This shows without a shadow of a doubt that we’re in a new timeline. There are new rules. We can’t assume anyone will survive. And they actually destroyed Vulcan. That was bold. I was torn about this. I didn’t want Vulcan to go, but we’d all been criticising star trek for using the almighty reset button. Finally, they were willing to make a major change in the Star Trek universe, and not backpedal it. The scene with Uhura and Spock in the turbolift is WEIRD. She goes in to comfort him. And ends up kissing him. She asks him what he needs. She seems almost disappointed when he doesn’t ask for anything romantic. Really really weird scene. So Nero explains he is from the future, and that in his future, Romulus was destroyed. The federation did nothing. Spock failed to save their world. I like the callback to the creatures Khan used to control people in Star Trek 2. They look ever so slightly different, but I’ve always taken them to be the same creature. While Spock is right, he has very flimsy evidence to drive him to assume Nero is from the future. Spock makes it clear that Nero has caused a new timeline. An alternate reality. Spock’s choice to throw Kirk off the ship onto a planet where he’d likely die is extremely harsh and illogical. All he had to do was put him in the brig. So this planet is supposed to be delta vega But it’s way too close to Vulcan. Now I’ll accept that planets don’t have uniform climate across the whole world. Earth certainly doesn’t. So I can accept that the desert planet we saw in “Where no man has gone before” could have frozen polar caps, and that’s where Kirk is. But Delta Vega is near the rim of the universe. Nowhere near Vulcan. I read that the writers of the movie thought fans would appreciate the callback. But this shows a lack of understanding of fans. No callback is preferable to a callback that blatantly breaks canon like this. They could have called this planet anything. The alien animals we see on the planet are AWESOME. Star Trek has needed a few good space monsters for a long time, so their inclusion was very welcome in my opinion. And surprise surprise! We see old Spock. Played by Leonard Nimoy! This is what really made this movie. Nimoy provided a link to the past. To old Star Trek. This is the original Spock. Last seen on screen as Ambassador Spock in Star Trek The Next Generation. So a star went supernova in the 24th century. Spock promised the Romulans he would help them save their planet. But he failed. The supernova destroyed Romulus. Spock and Nero were both pulled into the black hole and ended up in the 23rd century. This event happened in the prime timeline. The original timeline. And this is the event that will be important when it comes to Star Trek Picard. We get a nice little Spock/bones scene. These movies never quite reach the same levels of portraying the relationship between Kirk, Spock and bones as the original series, but little scenes like this give an inkling. There was another good scene with Bones and Spock in Star Trek Beyond. Then we meet Scotty. Simon Pegg does a pretty good job in the role. He’s mostly used for comic relief in this film. I’m not a huge fan of purely comic relief characters, but I was very amused by his line when he asks Spock if they have sandwiches in the future. Scotty mentioned beaming admiral archer’s prize beagle to another planet. This, obviously, can’t be Porthos. I can accept that maybe Archer is still alive as a very old man, but Porthos? No way. So clearly Archer’s love of beagles continues through his life. And this is where we encounter the problem of transwarp beaming. The ability to beam long distances from one planet to another. This is a big issue in the JJ Abrams movies. It was a convenient plot device to get Kirk and Scotty back onto the Enterprise in this episode. But it’s used very badly in the next movie, Star Trek Into Darkness. I’m afraid I’m not a fan of transwarp beaming. Not at all. It makes starship virtually obsolete. Spock knows the potential that kirk and young Spock have to do great things together. He wants kirk to take over the Enterprise. Spock assures Kirk that he just saw his planet destroyed. He is emotionally compromised. Both of him. Why does the Enterprise have water tubes running around that go into a big spinner choppy thing? Feels a bit too much like Galaxy Quest. Spock’s emotional outburst is understandable, given what he’s just been through. It’s a good thing Sulu was there to hear Pike promote Kirk to first officer. Otherwise, I doubt anyone would accept him as the new acting Captain. So now we have a cadet in command of the ship. Giving orders to crew who all outrank him, who have more experience and seniority than him. It’s a little absurd. Then we have a nice emotional scene between Sarak and Spock. Ben Cross probably plays a more believable Sarak here than James Frain does in discovery. So Nero is now planning to destroy Earth the same way he destroyed Vulcan. This movie is the first time we really see normal Starfleet hand phasers firing bolts instead of beams. Discovery continued this trend. Now, when The Defiant first appeared in DS9, firing bolts out of its cluster phasers, I loved it. It was so much meaner and tougher than normal phasers. But now that everything is bursts, I miss the beams, because they feel more star-trek-ey. So they find Ambassador Spock’s ship from the future. The computer voice is played, for one last time, by Majel Barret. Although, to be honest, it really doesn’t sound like her to me. But anyway. For once, it actually makes sense why there are no ships protecting earth. They all went to Vulcan and were destroyed by the Narada, leaving Earth defenceless. So they save Earth, and a black hole forms around the Nerada. Kirk tries to do the Starfleet thing, offering compassion to one’s enemy. Even Spock wants him to blow Nero away. When Nero refuses Kirk’s help, they gladly pummel it with phasers, destroying the ship. Except now the Enterprise is stuck in the gravitational pull of the black hole. Nice that Scotty threw in his life “I’m giving it all she’s got, captain” The solution, of course, is to eject the warp core. Which looks nothing like a warp core. In fact, it’s a whole lot of separate…..things. This doesn’t make a lot of sense. The enterprise is now without its warp core. It should have virtually no power, But now it can power out of the black hole. Apparently the destruction of the core did something technobabble-ish to disrupt the gravity or something. We get a nice little scene where Spock and Spock meet. Old Spock wanted Kirk and young Spock to find the friendship he knew that could have. A friendship that would define them both. Spock tells his younger counterpart to forget logic and do what feels right. This is kind of the culmination of his character journey, his increasing embracing of his human side was seen in both star trek 6 and tng unification. It’s a nice book-end to this character. So, Kirk, the cadet who has not yet even graduated the academy, who hasn’t even made ensign yet, is named captain and given command of the Enterprise. This is completely illogical and ridiculous. It’s the thing that bugs me about this movie the most. But anyway. So now the crew of the enterprise are all together, on the ship, as they should be, with Kirk in the captain’s chair and Spock at his side. The glimmers of a potential friendship kindled between them. We’re going to leave the Kelvin universe here and return to the prime timeline, because the event of this movie that really matters, is the destruction of Romulus by the singularity. This event had a huge impact on the prime timeline, and on Captain Picard in particular. The countdown to Picard comic book gives us some details on this. At the time of recording, I’ve read the first instalment. Well, that was star trek 2009 I still enjoy this movie. It’s a very different kind of star trek, but it showed us a modern, high energy take on the franchise. Next week, can you believe it? I’m very excited to announce that will be talking about the first episode of Star Trek Picard. We’re almost there, people And that’s very exciting. See you next week on Nerd Heaven. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 7: Light and Shadows For episode 32 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 7 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Light and Shadows. This episode’s teleplay is by Ted Sullivan, from a story by Ted Sullivan & Vaun Wilmott, and it is directed by Marta Cunningham. Discussion on Light and Shadows begins at 7:57… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at 7 minutes 57 seconds. Fred’s Pics and Spoiler Alert! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched Light and Shadows, you may want to stop reading here! Spock has been found!!! Burnham decides to go to Vulcan to see if Amanda had any luck finding Spock, knowing she probably wouldn’t tell Michael if she did. Going back home reminds Burnham of her childhood years, growing up in the house, and the times she spent with young Spock. Spock is on Vulcan, and he’s really messed up. We learn something I personally found shocking about Spock. He had a form of dyslexia that the Vulcans call L’tak Terai, and that Amanda helped Spock work past this learning disability, after seeing him not get the help he needed at the Vulcan Learning Center. We love Captain Pike! For episode 26 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss the Season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Discovery - S2E1, which is titled, Brother. It was written by Ted Sullivan & Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (the latter two were the showrunners at the time this was filmed), and it was directed by the current showrunner and co-creator, Alex Kurtzman. We both loved this supersized movie-like premiere! If you haven't given Discovery a try, this epic episode is one you can jump right in!

We both loved this supersized movie-like premiere! If you haven’t given Discovery a try, this epic episode is one you can jump right in! We LOVE Captain Pike!!! If you’ve seen TOS (“The Cage” and “The Menagerie”) or the Kelvin Timeline films – specifically “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) – you are probably aware of Captain Christopher Pike, who captained the Enterprise before Kirk took command, but we didn’t know about his stint as the captain of the Discovery, while the Enterprise underwent extensive repairs after suffering severe ship-wide system failure. Pike takes command of the Discovery to investigate seven red bursts throughout spread out across more than thirty thousand light-years, but he considers it “shared custody” with Saru. Pike makes this episode, and if this episode is any indication, Pike will quickly become a fan favorite, if he isn’t already! They Have Stepped It Up This episode looks like a blockbuster movie! It looks every bit as good as the three Kelvin Timeline films. There have been reports that Berg & Harberts lost their showrunner jobs in part because the first three episodes went way over budget. I was skeptical of this report until I saw this first episode. When I said it looks like a hundred million dollars was spent on this episode, I wasn’t exaggerating. I know it wasn’t, but the quality of the visuals has far eclipsed what we saw in Season 1, which was already made it one of the best looking TV shows going. Fred’s Pics! In addition to our cover image, Fred from The Netherlands also provided us with some images from Brother! Thanks again, Fred!!! If you watched the first Short Trek, Runaway, you may have noticed a resemblance between Po and Commander Nhan. I know I did, enough that I had to check to see who played Nhan. Well, Fred thought Nhan was a Xahean, like Po. However, it’s been determined that she’s a Barzan, the aliens who tried to sell rights to the Barzan wormhole in TNG’s Season 3 episode, “The Price”. This first couple of images focus on Nhan, and how she compares to the Xahean leader, Po and the Barzan leader, Bhavani. STDP 026 – Comparing Po vs. Commander Nhan STDP 026 – Nhan is Barzan Here’s a great pic of Captain Pike, just as Discovery is about to be taken out of warp.

The Cast, Part 2. When watching a show we love, we try to find characters we identify with. Many times, we do this without much thought about those who breathe life into those characters. It takes more then just good writing to truly make a character come to life. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Hayley Stoddart of Standard Orbit to continue our discussion of the talented actors of Star Trek: Discovery. We discuss the contributions their characters make to the show, their understanding of what makes Star Trek great for many, and their overall love of the fans. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2 and Picard Show News Roundtable! It’s finally time for us to bring you our long-awaited Season 2 News and Picard Show Roundtable!!! Recorded on September 8th, Ruthie and I were joined by two past roundtable participants – Mark Des Cotes from Solo Talk Media, and Steve Brown of the Panels to Pixels Podcast, and two new participants – Mark Deal and Wes Huntington from The Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast. We had some recording glitches during this episode, including some we didn’t know about at the time. More on that later. We start with the news… We reacted to the former co-showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts being fired from the show for both budget concerns and abuse in the writers’ room. We discussed the announcement of Alex Kurtzman becoming the new showrunner and James Duff later made an executive producer and probable next showrunner. Then, we reacted to the casting announcements of Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and, most recently, Ethan Peck as Spock. Onto the trailer!!! Most of us had seen the trailer (one exception… and you’ll have to listen to find out who hasn’t), but we talk about the trailer and our reactions to it. We also talk about what we would like to see in Season 2. Jean-Luc Picard… Is Back!!! After that, we then spend a good deal of time discussing last month’s announcement at Star Trek Las Vegas that the next Star Trek series will be focused around Jean-Luc Picard. We reacted to that announcement; we dissected some of what Patrick Stewart said about the show is and isn’t, and we speculated what the show will be about. What we think some of the other shows might be was also discussed. We finally get to some undiscussed feedback!!! Ruthie and I finally go through some feedback that came in after the end of the season. We recorded that feedback separately, so the other panelists do not participate during that section of the podcast. We STILL didn’t cover EVERYTHING… The “Short Treks“, four shorts covering short stories within the Star Trek: Discovery universe, were not covered in this roundtable. In hindsight, we probably should have. On September 20th, CBS announced that the first of these Short Treks – a Tilly story called Runaway – would be released on October 4th. This would be followed by shorts in November, December, and January. We will definitely be covering the Short Treks next time. A few days after we recorded, CBS CEO Les Moonves resigned amidst allegations of sexual harassment, and since he’s been the driving force behind CBS All Access, I’m sure we will have more to say about this next time. We also didn’t talk much about the existing characters, some of the people involved in the Picard show, like Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, who also wrote one of the Short Treks, TNG cast talking about the Pi

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1 Roundtable! It’s finally time for us to bring you our long-awaited Season 1 Roundtable!!! Recorded on March 30th, Ruthie and I were joined by my former co-host Adam, of The Nerfherder Council Podcast and Steve of the Panels to Pixels Podcast. Unfortunately, our stellar feedback contributor Mark, from Solo Talk Media, was sick on this night. Steve was able to fill the fourth seat, on short notice, and he was great! We also learn about his… well… let’s say Steve REALLY loves Denise Crosby! Starting with the season as a whole… We had some discussion as to whether the serialized format of the show led to us not being able to highlight specific episodes. We had a split vote. The Mirror Universe! When we had our first roundtable, we hadn’t gone to the Mirror Universe yet, so we talk about the Mirror Universe in detail, and its impact on the season. You can’t talk about the Mirror Universe without talking about Lorca!!! Jason Isaacs was incredible in the role of Captain Gabriel Lorca, a Federation Captain with a different way of doing things. Many were complaining that he did not act like a Starfleet captain. We later learn why… he’s from the Mirror Universe! Mirror Georgiou is an interesting character… The Mirror Georgiou, former emperor of the Terran Empire, now stranded in the Prime Universe, we all agreed is a very interesting character, and we hope that we’ll get to see a lot of her next season. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the bonus scene that was shown at WonderCon a few weeks ago, with Georgiou and a representative from an organization you may have heard of! I said the last episode that I wondered if Georgiou would become an agent of Section 31, or running the whole thing. After watching that scene, it seems that I may have been right! Yeah, Tyler, Voq, the Klingons in general and the war… We’re all a bit underwhelmed by the Tyler/Voq story and how little we got to see of the war. Of course, we can’t go an episode without talking about how much we dislike the Klingons… big shock there. All the rest We go a long way into this episode before we really talk much about Burnham at all. Tilly’s character we all love, and we also discuss Saru and Stamets. We hope to see more of the bridge crew next season, which is why I picked this image for the episode! NCC-17… We had this roundtable before the recent announcement of Anson Mount taking the role of Captain Pike of the Enterprise in Season 2. We still wonder who will take the Discovery’s captain’s chair. It could be Pike’s Number One (as seen in the TOS pilot episode The Cage), Saru, or someone else, even a not dead Prime Lorca. We’ll still have to guess. We still wonder how much the Enterprise will play into Season 2, as well as how well the show will fit into canon. So that’s it… and remember to pour one out to Lieutenant Yar for Steve! I could use your help… We last talk about whether or not we are dropping CBS All Access. The vote was 2 dropping, 1 keeping, and 1 abstention. Unfortunately, though I would love to keep watching the show, I had to drop my subscription, due to fina

In this episode of the Discussing Trek, we take a look back at season one, discussing the highs, the lows, and some things that just didn’t sit well with us! Did things end as well as they started with the onset of the Klingon War in the “Vulcan Hello”? Are we satisfied with the Tyler/Voq-arc? Was the venture into the mirror universe ultimately a good thing? Join us as we attempt to answer these questions and more!
Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1, Episode 15: Will You Take My Hand? There was a lot to say about Star Trek: Discovery S1E15, which is titled Will You Take My Hand? It was a season finale, after all, right? In fact, like last week, it took extra time to get this episode to you as a result. More about Season 1, Episode 14: The War Without, The War Within Before we get going and talk about the season finale, we got more feedback about last week’s episode and some pre-finale speculation. We share that feedback about the penultimate episode! Fred’s pics… Part 5! Fred from The Netherlands shared more pics again this week, showing us more wonderful use of lighting in the season finale! I have used one of those pics as the featured image for this episode, and a couple more below. If you want to see them all, you can see Fred’s image collection from the episode here. You’re no Captain Georgiou, Emperor!!! It seems that not all Starfleet captains from the Mirror Universe are good at hiding in plain sight! During his time in the Prime Universe, Lorca was able to pass himself as a Federation captain, albeit with some unconventional tendencies. Emperor Georgiou, on the other hand, doesn’t even TRY to hide her true self, despite Admiral Cornwell installing her as the long thought dead Captain Georgiou. The way she conducted herself on the Bridge was quite shocking, but also right in character. I was a bit surprised that she survived the episode, but when I think of the possibility of her as this crew’s longtime antagonist, like a Q, Gul Dukat or even Daniels, it makes me giddy! I still wonder if she will end up an agent of Section 31, or running the whole thing. Maybe she’ll try to start a new empire? Who knows, but I look forward to seeing her again! NCC-17… Yup, that’s right!!! At the end of this episode, Discovery answers a distress call from… you guessed it… the USS Enterprise NCC-1701!!! Now, in this era, sometime around the Kirk is not the Captain of the Enterprise yet. Instead, his predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike, is the Captain. However, Sarek’s son and Burnham’s adopted brother, Spock, does serve on this era’s Enterprise. We can only hope we’ll see this Enterprise in Season 2. Will Zachary Quinto reprise his role, or will they cast someone else as another version of Spock? And will it be Bruce Greenwood, who plays Pike in the 2009 and 2013 reboot films, reprising the role, or will it be someone new? What about the enigmatic Number One, who was played by the late Majel Barrett in The Cage (the original TOS pilot)? Some called the appearance of the Enterprise as fan service, and Ruthie is a little trepidatious on how this might affect canon next season. I say bring it on!

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1, Episode 14: The War Without, The War Within There was a lot to say about Star Trek: Discovery S1E14, which is titled The War Without, The War Within. In fact, it took extra time to get this episode to you as a result. More about Season 1, Episode 13: What’s Past Is Prologue We got more feedback about last week’s episode, which was a big one! Before we get into the discussion, we share that feedback. Fred’s pics… Part 4! Fred from The Netherlands shared more pics again this week, showing us more wonderful use of lighting in this series! I have used one of those pics as the featured image for this episode, but I am not going to feature the rest here, since it takes the extra time it to create the blog post when I do, and you’ve had to wait long enough! You can see Fred’s image collection from the episode here. The War Without, The War Within, The War Goes Badly For The United Federation of Planets… Soon after the pseudo-ISS Discovery becomes the USS Discovery again and rejoins its own universe, albeit nine months later than when they left it, we see Cornwell and Sarek forcibly take over the ship. They make Saru subject himself to a mind meld from Sarek. That was something you wouldn’t normally see a Federation Admiral and Ambassador do! You could see that they were pretty freaked out. We learn that Captain Killy’s ISS Discovery was destroyed in the Prime Universe, so they thought that Discovery was no more. We know things are bad when they are trepidatious of the Discovery warping to Starbase 1. Cornwell’s reaction to the 80,000 people gone from the starbase, probably many if not most of them dead, and a damaged base, tells you all you need to know. The Federation is losing badly, and with them installing Emperor Georgiou to captain Discovery, impersonating her doppelganger, that can only mean they are desperate, to the point where the very tenets of the Federation may have to be ignored to continue its survival. However, is there ANYONE out there who thinks this is a good idea??? This has BAD IDEA written all over it. The War of Lorca’s Legacy Lorca, or the shadow of him, is all over this episode. If you had any doubt, Lorca (Mirror version) was a jerk. A real jerk! By jumping into the Mirror Universe before transmitting the cloak breaking algorithm, he has doomed the Federation, taking them to the brink of annihilation. Would Cornwell, the former psychiatrist, prescribe shooting up Lorca’s remaining bowl of fortune cookies? For me, this was a highlight of the episode. The War of Fan Expectations I thought that The War Without, The War Within would either have time travel in the episode or set up a time travel episode for next week’s finale, to correct the timeline. The finale may still go that way, but it doesn’t look like it will be now. The show continues to keep me guessing, and I love that about the show. The Canon War Speaking of the finale, it’s going to have to address several elements of the story. We know there’s no spore drive going forward. The war with the Klingons, though we know very little about it according to canon, seems to be going worse than makes sense from what we know of the Federation in TOS. Those are the most glaring examples, but there are more. I will assert to listeners one last time to wait on judging the show on those matters until the finale. I have faith that they will be addressed, and if they aren’t, it will

Star Trek: Discovery – S1E6 – Lethe On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 6, titled Lethe. This episode was a bit of a departure from the long story arc we have seen so far from this series. Although some of what happened in this episode will continue on through this season, it felt very self-contained, almost episodic. Sarek and Burnham We learn a lot more in this episode about the complicated relationship Burnham has with Sarek. Burnham’s application to join the Vulcan Expeditionary Group was rejected, not on its own merit, but because Sarek was forced to choose between Burnham and Spock. Only one would be able to go. Sarek chose Spock, but Spock decided to join Starfleet instead. He never revealed that to Burnham and reflected upon this with regret as he lay dying on his ship. What’s Lethe? A false rejection? A troubled captain? According to Wikipedia, Lethe means “oblivion”, “forgetfulness”, or “concealment” in Classical Greek. The episode title suggests concealment, as Sarek concealed the truth about why Burnham’s application was rejected. It also fits Lorca concealing his true psychological condition to Starfleet. Cornwell discovers his PTSD, but before she can do anything about it, she is abducted by the Klingons. Unlike his unsanctioned rescue of Sarek, Lorca decides to play it by the books and wait for instructions, probably to hold onto his command. Groovy mind melds, spore trips, and funky nebulas! One thing this show was… it was trippy!!! The mind-meld was trippy. The nebula itself was very colorful and trippy. The Formerly uptight, Stamets is now the mellow Chief Engineer as a result of his spore drive encounters. Very trippy, indeed! We thought that this episode was not as good as previous episodes, especially last week. I thought it was still decent, while Adam didn’t care for it, and thought it was his least favorite so far. Nevertheless, we can’t wait for next week! Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! And follow us on Twitter!

Things are getting chilly this week in our Gotham S02E12 Mr Freeze Podcast as we discuss the introduction of two major Gotham villains, the continuing lies from Jim Gordon and a new King of Gotham. Synopsis for our Gotham S02E12 Mr Freeze Podcast Directed by Nick Copus Written by Ken Woodruff With Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) on the run, the inquest in to Mayor Galavan's (James Frain) death exonerates Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) despite his lies on the stand. Even with his reputation intact lingering suspicions remain for members of the GCPD and, in particular, for Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis). However, a new investigation is quickly opened after the bizarre death of a police officer who is frozen to death. Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) and Jim connect the killing to a body snatching spree. Little do they know that a skilled cryogenics scientist called Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) has been desperately experimenting on freezing and re-animating humans in order to freeze his terminally ill wife Nora (Kristen Hager) until a cure for her disease is found. Meanwhile, Cobblepot is captured and backs up Jim's story to Barnes. However, he is sent to Arkham after he justifies his actions where the result of insanity. In Arkham, all is not how Cobblepot intended as the Chief of Psychiatry welcomes his new play thing and Oswald becomes a patient of Hugo Strange (BD Wong). As the GCPD target Fries' as a suspect, discovering his laboratory, test subject A16 reanimates and Victor earns the nickname "Mr Freeze". All the unwanted notoriety and news of the successful cryogenics experiments puts Victor firmly in the sights of Hugo Strange who begins plans to recruit Fries for Indian Hill. We begin this week's episode with our spoiler-free thoughts on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and then on to our Gotham S02E11 Worse Than A Crime Podcast. We discuss our top 5 points about the mid-season finale of Gotham including the gang joining up to take on the Order of St. Dumas, the moral ambiguity of Jim Gordon and Silver St. Cloud trying her best to get close to Bruce again, but who is manipulating who. Synopsis for our Gotham S02E11 Worse Than A Crime Podcast Directed by Jeffrey G. Hunt Written by Bruno Heller The Galavan's are after the Waynes and their associates as Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) hunts down Alfred (Sean Pertwee), so Theo (James Frain) abducts Bruce (David Mazouz) from Wayne Manor holding him prisoner until midnight and the time of his sacrifice to cleanse Gotham and restore the family name of Dumas. Meanwhile, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) wakes up, a fugitive from the law, in an unexpected place and turns to dangerous allies for assistance in tracking down Galavan and Bruce Wayne, despite Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) failed intervention to try and pursuade him to stop his obsessive pursuit of Galavan. Jim and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) team up with Penguin (and his gang), Alfred, Selina Kyle and Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) and move on Galavan's residence where the Order of St Dumas is defeated. In the ensuing fallout Tabitha and Silver St. Cloud (Natalie Alyn Lind) begin to make their escape leaving Theo at the harsh, harsh mercy of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Gordon who take Theo to the docks and murder him, by bat, by gun and finally by umbrella! With the Galavan's seemingly finished as a force in Gotham Jim proposes to Leslie to make amends just as another corpse is delivered to Indian Hill! In post credits: A new dangerously cool villain is seen on the attack in the streets and alleyways of Gotham. Thank you so much for listening to Gotham TV Podcast. Welcome back detectives join us for our Gotham S02E10 Son of Gotham Podcast. This week we chat about Gotham's Season 3 renewal our Top 5 points, an excellent triangle between Silver, Bruce and Selina, a bad ass fight between Alfred and Tabitha and Jim taking down Theo Galavan. Synopsis for our Gotham S02E10 Son of Gotham Podcast Directed by Rob Bailey Written by John Stephens The Order of St Dumas go about their mysterious task throughout Gotham as they set on apparently random victims in a sacrifice to atone Gotham of its sins. As the bodies begin to pile up, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock's (Donal Logue) investigation leads them to a secret crypt under Gotham where they learn that the Orders mission is not random but is centered around the son of Gotham...and the Son of Gotham must die. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), still going against Alfred's wishes, is kidnapped along with Silver St Cloud (Natalie Alyn Lind) by a man called Tom "The Knife" (Guest Star Tommy Flanagan) apparently working for Wayne Enterprises. Under knife point he manipulates Silver into revealing the name of Bruce's parents' apparent killer, just as Bruce reveals a darker more deceptive trait to his personality. A concerned Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) grows suspicious of Bruce's whereabouts and searches Theo Galavan's (James Frain) residence, where he is confronted by Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) and seriously wounded in a fight. Elsewhere, the trial of the century sees Galavan acquitted of all charges leveled against him after former Mayor Aubrey James (Richard Kind) states that Penguin had kidnapped, tortured and threatened him to blame Galavan instead. With Theo free he is set to complete his plan to cleanse Gotham as he kidnaps Gordon and makes a visit to Wayne Manor. Thank you so much for listening to Gotham TV Podcast. As Roman month comes to a close we look at the 1999 film Titus, directed by Julie Taymor and based on the bloody tragedy by William Shakespeare, Titus Andronicus.
Jimmy attended the press room roundtables for upcoming BBC America show Intruders. Cast and producers were in attendance and we chatted with Mira Sorvino, John Simm, James Frain, Julie Gardner and Glen Morgan. Apologies for the TERRIBLE reporter from HGTV at the roundtable with us whom manipulated the conversations with inane questions and literally interrupted the talent at one point to get another stupid question in. Lame and for shame! Besides that, the series sounds quite intriguing and it was great to get some questions in to hear more about it. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Thanks for listening!
Top tune selection from special guest James Frain plus gig guide and usual blather from me. Khotin, Joey Anderson, Orbital, Fast Eddie and much more. Memory bliss...
James Frain plays billionaire Peter Fleming, The Cape's (David Lyons) nemesis, who moonlights as the twisted killer, Chess, on “The Cape.” NBC's new series THE CAPE, premieres January 9th. Frain received his big break while studying in London, when Sir Richard Attenborough cast him in his first feature, “Shadowlands,” opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.

This month I'm discussing the Russian-Welsh animated Jesus film The Miracle Maker. Released in 1999 it's the most recent film I've discussed so far, and whilst, surprisingly, it's still not that well known, the list of those who admire it is certainly growing.(Directors: Derek W. Hayes, Stanislav Sokolov) (Cast:Ralph Fiennes... Jesus, Michael Bryant... Voice of God/the Doctor, Julie Christie... Rachel, Rebecca Callard... Tamar, James Frain... Thomas, Richard E. Grant...
