On this episode, Jeff Akin reviews Star Trek Discovery, Into the Forest I Go (Season 1, Episode 9). He will examine the leadership approaches of Captain Lorca. Effective leadership requires living in both the present and the future simultaneously. It's the leader's job to craft a vision for the future and get others to buy into and share that vision. The leader should connect with people with both good intent and good perception and reception so that others share the vision and move there with them. The leader needs to get really good at describing the future as they live in the present. It's also important to connect with people in personal and meaningful ways that are uniquely meaningful to each of them. Finally, the leader must recognize and reinforce when people help move from the present into the future. By fostering a shared vision and recognizing champions, leaders can start living in the next future and connect in the next present to keep everybody moving forward. The episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing and reinforcing the contributions of team members who share and actively work towards the shared vision. Jeff Akin explains that as a leader, it is not only your job to craft a vision for the future, but more importantly, to get others to buy into and share that vision. This can be achieved by fostering a shared vision and recognizing your champions. By doing so, it enables you to start living in the next future and connect with people with both good intent and good perception and reception so that others share your vision and move there with you. The episode also highlights the importance of understanding what motivates people and how to use that as recognition or to encourage motivation. Ultimately, recognizing and reinforcing the contributions of team members who share and actively work towards the shared vision is crucial for success. In this episode of Discovery, Ryan and Brady try to focus on the positive, including Jason Isaacs' performance, the cool sci-fi element of the episode's main plot and how, even though we don't recommend it, watching Discovery Season 1 is actually more enjoyable if you do it a second time.

Where to begin? This week Steph and Akie discuss Star Trek: Discovery's eighth and ninth episodes in which there is some glorious Klingon battling, some disturbing (and progressive) loss of control of mental faculty, not a little bit of dire intrigue, and a great deal of everything else being turned completely inside out and all hell breaking loose!!! *PANTS* In short: it doesn't matter where we begin – we shall end up somewhere completely unexpected!

If you're going to subject fans to a two month break the mid-season finale sure as heck better go out with fireworks and fanfare! But did Discovery's creative team achieve this thrilling feat? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton take a dangerous journey into Klingon territory in order to break down the action, the drama, and the Kol of it all, in the momentous, and ominously titled, Into the Forest I Go. From Burnham's badass slow-mo hero shots, to Stamets' spore drive brain-scrambling and L'Rell's ambiguous connection to Ash Tyler, the duo leave no stone unturned in dissecting what is arguably the series' most high octane instalment yet! Plus, as always, the sturdy ol' ship Ortonville returns on a mission to ponder the ninth episode of The Orville, Cupid's Dagger. Right-click to download.Read more »

After the mission at Pahvo proves to be a failure, Starfleet orders Captain Lorca to bring the discovery into the safety of Federation space even though that means the Pahvans will surely meet their doom at the hands of the Klingons, so instead, Captain Lorca feigns problems with his spore drive to buy the crew time to come up with a solution. The solution the come up with is quite complex but its the best they've got and so they get right to it, hoping their efforts will end the war by disabling the one advantage the Klingons have over the Federation, a cloaking screen. The crew are successful and they even manage to recover Admiral Cornwall and manage to capture the Klingon L'Rell along the way, but it comes at great cost to poor Commander Tyler and just when we think they'll get a rest, the Discovery jumps to an unknown place that is not registering on any star charts. Is she in another dimension, or universe, perhaps the mirror Universe, perhaps the prime timeline? We'll have to wait till January 7th to find out but you can find out what we thought of this episode of Star Trek Discovery by tuning in.
