A Vulcan Mind Meld with Tara Rosling Tara Rosling joins Trek Untold this week to discuss her time on seasons 3 and 4 of "Star Trek: Discovery" and what it's like to be the President of Ni'Var! Tara discusses her origins in acting in Canada and what she learned studying at York University, how she went from waitressing to her first film gig, "Extreme Measures" with Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, balancing stage work in the theater VS on-screen in TV and film and what type of performing she prefers. From there, we beam into our Trek talk to learn how Tara was cast as President T'rina and how it linked with her playing a repressed Mennonite on "Impulse" along with another character she portrayed elsewhere, her understanding of what a Vulcan is, and how they behave to control their emotions, the method to do a proper Vulcan mind meld, the leadership on and off set with Soneqhua Martin-Green, working with Doug Jones and how the romance between T'Rina and Saru happened, the day Stacey Abrams showed up on set, what it was like to film during the COVID-19 pandemic and how that affected her scenes. Plus, an early role in William Shatner's "Tek War" series, being the voice of Nova on the 90's "Silver Surfer" cartoon, her first time being squibbed on "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" and more! Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month begins with a look in on Star Trek: Discovery and its fourth season episode "All is Possible." While the threat of the DMA looms, Discovery orbits Ni'Var ahead of the planet's return to the Federation. But as Captain Michael Burnham soon learns, the accord is in jeopardy. Will she be able to maneuver people and assets to save the Federation's most important political negotiation in over a hundred years? Meanwhile, Lt. Tilly helps out Starfleet Academy by taking some trainees on a team-building exercise, but it proves to be more than she expects when their shuttle crash-lands on an ice planet. Erik explains his plan for an all Kurtzman Era Star Trek month. He also blames Bryan Fuller for some of Discovery's shortcomings. Justin reveals this episode broke his appreciation of the series. The lack of detail regarding Burnham's interests and hobbies proves to be a problem. Saru and Tilly continue to be favorite characters while the rest of the crew continue to be unknowable. Book's story is criticized while Tilly's drives Justin to distraction. Ni'Var president T'Rina and Saru, however, still prove charming. The cultural imperialism of the Federation is examined and Erik briefly imagines Dustin Hoffman in Death Wish.

Ruthie & Brian discuss the season finale of Star Trek: Discovery S4E13, titled Coming Home. The DMA approaches Earth and Ni'Var. Discovery makes a final attempt to stop it. It was written by showrunner Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. We both liked this finale. It was probably our second favorite of the four season finales of Discovery, behind Season 2.

It's taken a while for us to get back to Disco and to finally get this episode out, but here's our take on the penultimate episode of Season 4, S4E12 titled Species Ten-C. It was written by Kyle Jarrow and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Discovery makes first contact with the very alien species and needs to find a new way to communicate with them. We both liked this episode.

Married Trekkie couple, Nicole & Joe, take a return trip to the U.S.S. Discovery! In this episode we first introduce a new segment, Trek Check, in which we break down our thoughts on current Trek episodes and news and updates in the Trek world. Then, we dig into the budding romance between Doug Jones' Captain Saru and Tara Rosling's T'Rina, the president of Ni'Var! ***Special shout out to Steve Combs for the music featured and remixed throughout this episode. Anika and Liz meet the 10-C, shout enough to scare Grudge, and contemplate… What can Book's fate possibly be? Liz has a theory! Tarka is WORSE THAN GUL DUKAT, YOU GUYS A VERY brief digression into matters Picard related (note spoilers) "Why is Star Trek about feelings all of a sudden?" We cannot believe this is even a point of discussion, but since it's come up, we have a rant we prepared earlier! We do enjoy a nice puzzle… Some WILD SPECULATION about the possibilities for season 5 Wait, why haven't they just chucked a spacesuit on T'Rina and sent her out to mind meld with the 10-C?
Finally, we are at the hyperfield bubble of Species 10C! The whole season has been leading up to this! Will Michael, President Rillak, et al be able to find a way to communicate with this vastly advanced species and get them to stop mining the alpha quadrant and accidentally destroying whole planets?! With the help of Dr. Harai and Saru and a few members of the bridge crew, they *are* able to figure out the beginnings of a "bridge language" and the 10C send a silver egg sphere to the loading bay with a door. Michael, Rillak, T'rina, and Saru go aboard to make a case for the civilizations of the milky way galaxy. I mean... this could really work, people! EXCEPT, Tarka and Book are still planning a desperate mission to grab the DMA controller and power down the DMA so that Tarka can use it to go parallel universe hopping. And they took Jett Reno hostage and she is able to spy on Tarka's calculations and sees that if they take the controller it will cause a catastrophic implosion destroying the hypersphere and the 10C and sending a subspace rift caroming back to the alpha quadrant. That's a lot of lives being snuffed out for Tarka's ambition, but he gets the better of Book, lock him up with Reno and makes a run for the DMA controller. So... maybe this won't work at all. Discovery enters the Galactic Barrier, and while real world physicists weep, Anika and Liz turn down the saturation and discuss: Just when we thought Disco had mastered pacing... The Tarka problem endures Saru! T'Rina! Their love! "Insecurity is universal." Discovery is a deeply insecure show. Is MURF Species 10-C?! Translation, alteration and unconscious bias Liz's next door neighbour does a bit of yard work, which is great… We have started shipping Vance/Rillak, which means we are also VERY concerned that Rillak's gonna go get herself blown up or something And more!
So many character stories get developed in Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4, Episode 10, "The Galactic Barrier"—and what a journey through that legendary Star Trek phenomenon it is! Kevin and Mike discuss the trials, the technobabble, and the triumphs, including the further connection between Saru and T'Rina, the growing trust between President Rillak and Captain Burnham, the ups and downs of Book and Tarka, and that incredible backstory for Tarka and Oros, not to mention the return of Ensign Adira! Okay so this is the episode where both Mike and Johnson can BOTH agree that at the very least, Michael Burnham is written well, and less aggravating than usual - though that doesn't stop Johnson from having some strong points of feedback. That being said, we loved the episode "All is Possible" as a whole, where we get some awesome character moments. And who else is on this Saru and T'Rina ship!?!?! We also say a bittersweet farewell to Tilly, at least for now. Here's hoping she isn't a stranger, and if she is indeed going to get her own Starfleet Academy show that Mary Wiseman lets us know first!!

But Vulcan society is not a feminist paradise. In “Amok Time” (TOS 02:01), we see that Vulcan females can be betrothed in childhood and only released from that betrothal by combat between their betrothed and a second male of their choosing. Whoever wins in combat earns the right to marry the female. She becomes the “property of the victor.”The episode I mention that features lots of Riker's chest hair and women running things is “Angel One” (TNG 01:13).I could not find a definitive answer to the question of which Star Trek series includes the most incidents of shirtless-ness. I'm sticking to my original guess that the Original Series probably wins this trophy, thanks to Captain Kirk.
Ruthie and Brian talk through S3E7 of Star Trek: Discovery, titled Unification III. The USS Discovery arrives on Vulcan, but it's now called Ni'Var, and the Vulcans share the planet with Romulans, who have unified just as Spock had wished for centuries ago. They hold data for The Burn, but getting it from them turns into a process that may begin to tear them apart.
