Fast charging for heavy-duty vehicles is a revolutionary concept that aims to address the challenges faced by industries such as mining, ports, and long-haul transportation. Marc-Andre Beck, the CEO and founder of grivix, discusses the need for fast charging solutions for heavy-duty vehicles and introduces their innovative technology.Fast charging for heavy-duty vehiclesCurrently, heavy-duty vehicles like big caterpillars in mines or vehicles in ports are not electrified. Even if they are electrified, the existing infrastructure takes a significant amount of time to charge them. However, in industries that operate 24/7, such as mines and ports, vehicles need to be charged quickly, within minutes, to ensure uninterrupted operations. This is where grivix comes in with their fast charging solution.grivix has developed a charging system that can charge heavy-duty vehicles at a speed of up to 6 MW, which is double the speed of filling gasoline into a vehicle. This is more than 10 times faster than Tesla's supercharger. The charging process is fully automated, with the vehicle being guided to the charging spot with a precision of 50 centimeters based on ultrawideband technology. Once the vehicle is in position, the system disables the drivetrain, and the connector is automatically recognized and plugged in. The system can deliver up to 4,000 amps, enabling even the charging of large 250-ton caterpillars in a few minutes. The autonomous aspect of grivix's technology is a significant feature. The charging system utilizes ultrawideband technology to guide the vehicle to the charging spot with a precision of 15 centimeters. This technology allows for autonomous charging, but it also integrates with the vehicle's display system, enabling manual control if required.Immense speed without battery damageOne of the key questions is how fast charging can be achieved without damaging the battery. Beck explains that the technology is compatible with lithium titanate batteries, which are capable of being charged at 10C. The difference in battery chemistry allows for the incredible speed without damaging the batteries. If you were to try the same thing with a standard lithium-ion battery, it would destroy the chemicals and potentially create a fire. For regular lithium batteries, the maximum charging speed is 3C, which translates to about 20 minutes for a typical 20 to 80% charge. However, sophisticated cooling systems are required to prevent overheating during the charging process. These batteries are expensive but allow for rapid charging, making them an acceptable expense for industries that need to prioritize speed over cost.Who is grivix designed for?The target demographic for grivix's fast charging solution is industries that rely on heavy-duty vehicles for their operations. Mining companies, ports, and long-haul transportation companies are among the potential customers who can benefit from this technology. The ability to charge heavy-duty vehicles quickly and efficiently will significantly reduce downtime and increase productivity in these industries. While grivix is currently in the proof of concept phase, they plan to roll out their charging stations in controlled environments such as mines and ports in the coming months. Regulatory considerations may delay their deployment in public areas. However, the company aims to ramp up production and make their fast charging technology more widely available by the end of the year. Conclusion: Ultra-fast charging for a focused marketIn conclusion, fast charging for heavy-duty vehicles is a game-changing technology that addresses the need for rapid charging in industries that operate 24/7. grivix's innovative solution offers charging speeds of up to 6 MW, fully automated charging processes, and integration with autonomous and manual control systems. While still in the proof of concept phase, grivix aims to roll out their charging stations in controlled environments and eventually make its technology more widely available. Have you ever been to the Hanmer hotpools? They were my first hotpool experience. North Canterbury. And they hold a bit of a special place in my heart.  What about Polynesian Spa in Rotorua? Think about how it feels to walk into the hot pools. You dip a toe or a foot, you kind of brace yourself as you wait to adjust to the heat. And then, how you ease yourself in. How you move slowly, you find a spot to sit down and slip beneath the warm water. They gently do their thing, easing and relaxing your muscles. For some people the warm water gets a bit much. Maybe it's my ice-cold heart, but I can only last so long in those hot pools before I start sweating, and I need to jump out and refresh. The hot pools at Polynesian Spa range from 36C to 42C. Hanmer is similar. And so is the ocean, off Miami. Yeah... the ocean. Preliminary data this week recorded the ocean temperature off Florida as a little over 38C. That's a full 10C warming than the ocean temperature in Fiji in the heart of summer.  No wonder the U.N. Secretary General says we've reached a Global Boiling Point. That does sound bad. I'm sure there will still be many people who dismiss the words as alarmist or hyperbole, but those affected by the extreme weather in the northern summer this month might beg to differ.  July was certainly the hottest month globally since records began. Climate scientists reckon it was probably also the hottest month in the history of human civilisation. 100-to-120 thousand years.  Wildfires in North America, heatwaves across Europe. How crazy were the pictures from Rhodes in Greece? This week saw the largest evacuation in the country's modern history. I think my favourite – if that's the right word – extreme weather event of the Northern Hemisphere's summer, was the insane hailstorm which struck Northern Itay, just outside of Milan. The region had been sweltering in an oppressive heatwave, when black skies brought with them hailstones as large as tennis balls. As they started to melt in the warm air, the little cobbled Italian village streets were turned into rivers of melting ice. It was crazy. Anyway.  I don't know about you, but much of the time I find I subconsciously put the climate issue to the back of my mind. Or if not the back, at least the side. I make a few measly sacrifices. I ride my bike. I try to limit how much meat I consume. But honestly, a lot of the time life just gets in the way and a lot of my thoughts are consumed by other things. But then a week like this will snap me back at attention. The hottest month in human civilisation. I don't mean to dismiss inflation or crime, the state of our education system, or the Football Ferns' chances of making the playoffs. But you've gotta say, it really puts our other problems in perspective.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

M., Parker, K. K., Pu, W. T., Bezzerides, V. J. Abstract: BACKGROUND: N-terminal-acetyltransferases catalyze N-terminal acetylation (Nt-acetylation), an evolutionarily conserved co-translational modification. Nt-acetylation regulates diverse signaling pathways, yet little is known about its effects in the heart. To gain insights, we studied NAA10-related syndrome, in which mutations in NAA10, which catalyzes Nt-acetylation, causes severe QT prolongation, hypotonia, and neurodevelopmental delay. METHODS: We identified a missense variant in NAA10 (c.10C greater than A; p.R4S) that segregated with severe QT prolongation, arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, and sudden death in a large kindred. We developed patient-derived and genome-edited human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models and deeply phenotyped iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) to dissect the mechanisms underlying NAA10-mediated cardiomyocyte dysfunction. RESULTS: The NAA10-R4S mutation reduced enzymatic activity, decreased expression levels of NAA10/NAA15 proteins, and destabilized the NatA complex. In iPSC-CM models of NAA10 dysfunction, dysregulation of the late sodium and slow rectifying potassium currents caused severe repolarization abnormalities, consistent with clinical QT prolongation and increased risk for arrhythmogenesis. Engineered heart tissues generated from mutant NAA10 cell lines had significantly decreased contractile force and sarcomeric disorganization, consistent with the cardiomyopathic phenotype in the identified family members. Diastolic calcium levels were increased with corresponding alterations in calcium handling pathways. We identified small molecule and genetic therapies that reversed the effects of NAA10 dysregulation of iPSC-CMs. CONCLUSIONS: Our study defines novel roles of Nt-acetylation in cardiac ion channel regulation and delineates mechanisms underlying QT prolongation, arrhythmia, and cardiomyopathy caused by NAA10 dysfunction. In Episodes 9 & 10 we had the honor to speak with retired United States Air Force Colonel Scott "SOUP" Campbell, a Wing Commander and fighter pilot who graciously shared his experiences and perspective on flying the incredible A-10 Warthog. At the end of that 2-part chat, we agreed to do another episode where we'd discuss in detail the newest variant of the Warthog, and that is the A-10C.In planning that follow on episode, Colonel Campbell recommended that I speak with an active duty pilot that he once commanded, because as SOUP said, he's one of the most talented A-10 pilot's that he knows. That person is U.S. Air Force Major Ridge "KELSO" Flick, who is our guest for this episode of Go Bold.Maj. Flick graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, after which he did pilot training to become a fighter pilot.Today Maj. Flick is an A-10C Warthog pilot who has flown combat missions over Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School, and at the time of our chat he was a Weapons Instructor Pilot at the Air Force's Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. For those who don't know, being a Weapons School Instructor Pilot is the equivalent of being a University Professor who teaches PhD students -- collectively these folks are pilots who are among the elite in the United States Air Force. The U.S. Air Force Weapons School trains tactical experts and leaders to control and exploit air, space and cyber on behalf of the joint force. The weapons school mantra is: "humble, approachable and credible". These folks form a band of trusted advisors and problem-solvers that lead the Department of the Air Force and enables it to integrate its combat power seamlessly alongside those of other military services. Maj. Flick embodies the tenets of the Weapons School mantra, and he graciously shares his time with us to describe his experiences of training, leadership, and in flying the mighty A-10C Warthog. The A-10C configuration incorporates modern avionics which enable the use of precision weaponry. As Maj. Flick says, the A-10C is a "1st Gen fighter with Gen 4++ avionics".Maj. Flick describes how the A-10C systems - like the moving map, helmet mounted sight, and targeting pod - provide enhanced situational awareness and functionality which makes the A-10C incredibly effective as a Close Air Support and attack aircraft. You'll hear first-hand perspective on flying the A-10 and what its like to shoot its amazing GAU-8 30mm cannon. You'll also hear about the A-10 syllabus at the Weapons School. It's a great conversation from one of the best in the business, so we thank Maj. Flick for his time and insight.Be sure to listen to our next episode where Maj. Flick shares some of his experiences of flying the A-10C in combat! The A-10 community says ATTACK, and we echo that with GO BOLD!

Skating on the Rideau Canal is a staple in Ottawa, Ont. each winter, but with temperatures that are milder than usual, skating on the canal this season could be in jeopardy. National online journalist with Global News, Saba Aziz says generally speaking Ottawa needs 10 to 14 days of temperatures between -10C and -20C for the canal to freeze over and be safe for skating, and this year, that just hasn't happened. Aziz joins Mike Stubbs to discuss.

ZIFL - 10/15/2022 available at http://zalma.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/ZIFL-10-15-2022-1.pdf Short teases about the articles in this issue can be read at ZIFL-10-15-2022 Ethics & Insurance Fraud Insurance fraud is a crime in most jurisdictions. In California it is a felony subject to five years in prison upon conviction. By definition a person who commits the crime of insurance fraud is not acting ethically. In State v. Whitaker, 175 P.3d 136, 117 Hawai'i 26 (Haw. App. 12/31/2007) Whitaker, after presenting a claim to his insurer, was indicted, convicted, and sentenced for Insurance Fraud in violation of Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) ' 431:10C‑307.7(a)(1) and (b)(2) (2005), and Attempted Theft in the Second Degree (Attempted Theft 2) in violation of HRS ' 708‑831(1)(b) (Supp. 2000) and HRS ' 705‑500 (1993). RICO Judgment Allows Disgorgement Damages Fraudsters Must Disgorge Profits of Crime - In Diane Creel and Lynn Creel v. Dr. Says, LLC, et al., Civil Action No. 4:18-CV-00615, United States District Court, E.D. Texas, Sherman Division (September 27, 2022) the plaintiffs obtained a verdict against Defendants Dr. Yupo Jesse Chang; MD Reliance, Inc.; Universal Physicians, PA; Dr. Says, LLC; Office Winsome, LLC; and Yung Husan Yao (aka Angela Yao) for violations of the civil Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (“RICO”) and RICO conspiracy. The Court, after the verdict, needs to enter its findings of fact and conclusions of law regarding equitable disgorgement. New California Fraud Statutes SB 1040, authored by Senator Susan Rubio, authorizes the Insurance Commissioner to order restitution from persons who sell insurance without the necessary license from the Department of Insurance, including “extended vehicle warranties” sold illegally through robocalls and misappropriation of consumers' and businesses' premiums, among other insurance scams. Good News From the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud Dead patients couldn't stop Thomas G. O'Lear from billing taxpayers $3.7M for fraudulent X-rays in the Indianapolis area. O'Lear ran a portable-X-ray firm that zapped patients in nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities and long-term care facilities. He billed for thousands of X-rays that he and his business did not perform. That included 151 X-rays on dates after the patients had died. He also billed Medicare and Medicaid for services at nursing facilities on dates when patients were either hospitalized and not on-site at the facilities. O'Lear took multiple X-rays in one visit and falsely claimed that each was done on a different day, requiring separate reimbursement for transporting the portable equipment on each date. And he falsely billed for multiple images of patients when only one image was done — thus requiring a higher reimbursement. O'Lear covered up his scheme by forging medical records, falsifying X-ray images and forging signatures of his employees and the doc he said had ordered X-rays. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/barry-zalma/support

Finally, we are at the hyperfield bubble of Species 10C! The whole season has been leading up to this! Will Michael, President Rillak, et al be able to find a way to communicate with this vastly advanced species and get them to stop mining the alpha quadrant and accidentally destroying whole planets?!   With the help of Dr. Harai and Saru and a few members of the bridge crew, they *are* able to figure out the beginnings of a "bridge language" and the 10C send a silver egg sphere to the loading bay with a door. Michael, Rillak, T'rina, and Saru go aboard to make a case for the civilizations of the milky way galaxy.    I mean... this could really work, people!   EXCEPT, Tarka and Book are still planning a desperate mission to grab the DMA controller and power down the DMA so that Tarka can use it to go parallel universe hopping. And they took Jett Reno hostage and she is able to spy on Tarka's calculations and sees that if they take the controller it will cause a catastrophic implosion destroying the hypersphere and the 10C and sending a subspace rift caroming back to the alpha quadrant. That's a lot of lives being snuffed out for Tarka's ambition, but he gets the better of Book, lock him up with Reno and makes a run for the DMA controller.   So... maybe this won't work at all.   Join us for the month of March for Access All Areas at all levels at http://patreon.com/setphasers

That means they have to sneak on the ship and add some code to the system. While there, Book attempts to enlist in the help of a new ally.   The away team comes back, after some harrowing experiences, with some theories on how to proceed; DISCO takes off for the hyperfield; and Book returns to his ship to discover that Tarka was in a tight spot and had to take a hostage. 89. The Benefits of Flow Batteries Over Lithium Ion

The Benefits of Flow Batteries Over Lithium Ion Lithium-ion (Li-ion) is the most commonly talked about battery storage technology on the market these days, and for good reason. Li-ion batteries have a high energy density, and they are the preferred option when mobility is a concern, such as for cell phones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles. But there are different energy storage technologies that make more sense in other use cases. For example, iron flow batteries may be a better option for utility-scale power grid storage. An iron flow battery is built with three pretty simple ingredients: iron, salt, and water. “A flow battery has a tank with an electrolyte—think of it as salt water to be simple—and it puts it through a process that allows it to store energy in the iron, and then discharge that energy over an extended period of time,” Eric Dresselhuys, CEO of ESS Inc., a manufacturer of iron flow batteries for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications, explained as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Iron flow batteries have an advantage over utility-scale Li-ion storage systems in the following areas: • Longer duration. Up to 12 hours versus a typical duration of no more than 4 hours for large-scale Li-ion systems. • Increased safety. Iron flow batteries are non-flammable, non-toxic, and have no explosion risk. The same is not true for Li-ion. • Longer asset life. Iron flow batteries offer unlimited cycle life and no capacity degradation over a 25-year operating life. Li-ion batteries typically provide about 7,000 cycles and a 7- to 10-year lifespan. • Less concern with ambient temperatures. Iron flow batteries can operate in ambient conditions from –10C to 60C (14F to 140F) without the need for heating or air conditioning. Ventilation systems are almost always required for utility-scale Li-ion systems. • Lower levelized cost of storage. Because iron flow batteries offer a 25-year life, have a capital expense cost similar to Li-ion, and operating expenses that are much lower than Li-on, the cost of ownership can be up to 40% less. “People have been really interested in flow batteries for a lot of reasons, but the most common one that you'll hear about is the long duration,” said Dresselhuys. So, why haven't iron flow batteries overtaken Li-ion batteries in the power grid storage market? “I think lithium has had an advantage for a couple of reasons historically,” Dresselhuys said. “The first is that it's been more broadly available.” Dresselhuys explained that even though Li-ion batteries weren't specifically developed for grid applications, the fact that they are well-suited for cars and other uses, where the energy density that lithium provides has real advantages, allowed manufacturing efficiencies to develop. That, in turn, has brought costs for Li-ion down and accelerated growth. Therefore, it's taken some time for other technologies to catch up. Still, there are companies implementing iron flow battery projects. ESS announced in April that it had contracted with a Chilean utility to provide a flow battery system for use in the environmentally pristine Patagonia area. ESS's 300-kW/2-MWh Energy Warehouse system will be integrated with renewable resources in a local microgrid with the aim of eliminating about 75% of the diesel-fueled generation previously used to power the area. “The project there was actually originally designed and spec'd out to be a lithium project, because, of course, that's what people thought was available,” said Dresselhuys. ESS's team of experts talked to the owners about the advantages of the iron flow battery system and came away with the order.

The strangeness of our world is demonstrated by the things we take for granted.I bought a used book. The previous owner's name was Mary Lou. I know this because she used the stub of her boarding pass as a book marker. A few years ago, Mary Lou took United Airlines flight 5409 from San Diego to Los Angeles on New Year's Day. She sat in seat 10C. No big deal, right? You can read all that on the stub of the boarding pass. But then I also know that she's 44 years old with short, blonde hair and bright blue eyes. I know the sound of her voice and the name of her 11-year-old son and her home address in Minneapolis. I can name each of the 8 companies that have employed her as an events coordinator. And I know that she is a very private person. It took me less than 5 minutes to learn these things and I was only mildly curious. All I had to do was ask the companion in my pocket. She knows everything. My companion even gives me directions when I'm driving. “Turn here. Get in the left lane to turn left at the next intersection. Your destination will be on the right.” She knows every nook and cranny of every city, town and village on earth. She showed me a photo of the house where Mary Lou lives with her husband and her son. The strangeness of our world is demonstrated by the things we take for granted. There is a multicolored dog who lives across the street, two houses down.He races me for about 100 yards every morning when I drive past his house. We both know the finish line. He doesn't growl or bark or act like he's protecting his territory, he just likes to see if he can outrun my pickup truck. Strangely, he doesn't race with Pennie or with anyone else. Only me. And he doesn't race with me when I'm driving Pennie's car. I don't know the dog's name, so I asked the companion in my pocket. She doesn't know, either. Roy H. Williams
