This week we discuss the TKO comic Sara by Garth Ennis and Steve Epting, colors by Elizabeth BreitweiserBut first, why did Cody have a head in his bag? And who put it there? How did Cody lose his voice? What did Jake do for his birthday? Was World War II Russia a chill place? Would Sara make a good movie? Did this comic have Velvet vibes? Does color play a big role in this comic? Could Sara take out Johnny Five from Short Circuit? Is Sara the goat sniper? Does this comic have Inglorious Basterds vibes? Is now the perfect time to hunt Nazis? Does one of the members of Sara's squad represent Death? Did the Russian military lie to Sara? Is this comic historically accurate? Was this more of a character study than an action comic? Did this story have Saving Private Ryan vibes? Is TKO still in business? What other TKO comics do we like? Is Sara a masterpiece? Does the art outweigh the story? How does this compare to other Garth Ennis comics? Who would we cast as a live-action Sara? Should we cover James Bond on the podcast? What was the most brutal scene in the comic? Is this a comic geared towards dads? Is this the kind of comic you can give to non-comic book readers? What is Queen & Country? How is Sara like a ronin? Did Sara take out the Bradley Cooper of German snipers? Is this the Sisterhood of the Traveling Snipers? Why is Cody threatening our listeners yet again?Check out our website: https://www.comicsandchronic.com/New episodes every THURSDAYFollow us on social media! This week on The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four offbeat cop films that have stuck with me over the years. These films can be funny, gritty, offbeat, and sometimes kind of chaotic in the best way possible. So what movies am I recommending?Running Scared (1986) – Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two wisecracking Chicago detectives. This one's got a great mix of comedy and action, and it leans into that mid-80s buddy cop energy without taking itself too seriously. Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” is on the soundtrack, which feels like a time capsule in itself.Miami Blues (1990) – Alec Baldwin in a role that's kind of hard to pin down. He plays a violent conman who ends up impersonating a cop. It's based on a Charles Willeford novel and keeps that oddball tone where you're not always sure if you're supposed to laugh or be disturbed. Fred Ward is great in it too, playing the worn-out detective trying to catch him.Freebie and the Bean (1974) – This one's messier than most cop movies, but it's intentional. Directed by Richard Rush, who also did The Stunt Man, it's full of reckless driving, dark humor, and strange tonal shifts. Alan Arkin and James Caan play the leads, and they're either chasing criminals or arguing with each other. It kind of laid the groundwork for a lot of buddy cop films that came later.Stakeout (1987) – Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez as partners on a surveillance detail that doesn't stay professional for very long. There's a good balance of suspense and comedy, and Madeleine Stowe holds her own in her first major role. It was directed by John Badham, who also did WarGames and Short Circuit, so the pacing is solid. If you're in the mood for movies where different type of cops break rules, hunt odd suspects or drive their car on the track of an elevated train, I think you will find something here you will like. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Port Adelaide have owned Essendon in recent times, will that trend continue tonight at Marvel Stadium on the back of the week of scrutiny Brad Scott and the Bombers have faced? The rescheduled season opener will be held on Saturday night, is it going to be an early precursor to what we see in September later this year? There's a party over at NOVA, Dr Marner (Austin Pendleton) is showing off the new line of military kill bots, the S.A.I.N.T.s, when a sudden storm shuts it all down. Before they can get the robots to the showroom, #5 is hit by a bolt of lightning and escapes, spurring their creator, Newton Crosby, PhD (Steve Guttenberg) and his partner, Ben (Fisher Stevens) into action to bring it back to the lab. #5 goes out into the world in search of input and meets a very special animal lover, Stephanie (Ally Sheedy). Together they do their best to show that #5 is indeed alive and doesn't deserve to be disassembled. This week, in true Werewolf Ambulance style, we're diving headfirst into a film series by beginning somewhere in the middle: we're discussing the 1985 George Romero film "Day of the Dead." Special topics for your consideration include: having a very shitass day at work, fantastic practical effects, a film of Pittsburgh royalty, comparisons to "Short Circuit," an absolutely bananas score, and an ode to my neighbor and yours but actually mine Tom Savini. If there was a Pittsburgh Mt. Rushmore, you'd better bet George Romero would be on it (and not that asshole Andy Warhol). Catch his other films that we've covered in Episodes 21 and 249- "Creepshow" and "Creepshow 2," respectively, and Episode 137- "Monkey Shines." The regular lineup of links! Steve Guttenberg is a beloved Hollywood actor, known for his role in films including Diner, Police Academy, Short Circuit, Three Men and a Baby, Cocoon, and television shows including Ballers and Veronica Mars. We have enjoyed Steve Guttenberg in many roles and now I'd like to spotlight maybe the role that was the most difficult for Steve – the role of family caregiver to his dad and hero, Stanley. Steve wrote about his care experience while reflecting on his childhood and Hollywood career in his new book, Time to Thank. We learn about why Steve and his sister pursued home dialysis training, how Hollywood's portrayal of care and death differ from real life, the self-love creed Steve recited with his dad, and all the terrific micro acts of self-care Steve practices to remain happy and healthy. Dave's pick this week is the family comedy sci-fi adventure, Short Circuit from 1986. Short Circuit was a collaborative effort that blended innovative special effects with a light-hearted, family-friendly narrative. Directed by John Badham, the film tells the story of a military robot, Number 5, who gains sentience after being struck by lightning. The production was notable for its advanced use of robotics and puppetry to bring the character of Number 5 to life. Special effects supervisor Syd Mead, who had previously worked on films like "Blade Runner" and "Tron," was instrumental in designing the robot, creating a character that was both mechanically believable and endearing. The use of practical effects and on-set puppetry, operated by a team of puppeteers, gave Number 5 a lifelike presence that CGI could not have achieved at the time. Filming took place in various locations around Oregon, including Astoria and the Columbia River Gorge, which provided picturesque and diverse backdrops for the movie's action and comedic sequences. The cast, featuring Ally Sheedy as Stephanie Speck and Steve Guttenberg as Newton Crosby, brought warmth and humor to the story, further enhanced by the chemistry between the human characters and the robotic protagonist. The production faced challenges, such as ensuring the robot's functionality and coordinating complex scenes involving the animatronics, but the crew's dedication paid off. "Short Circuit" was well-received upon its release, praised for its charming story, groundbreaking special effects, and the memorable character of Number 5, which quickly became a cultural icon of the 1980s.
