This was the motivation that Founder Noel Cronin and his Daughter Sarah behind Talking Pictures TV, now in its tenth year of transmission. Sarah was kind enough to share with me it's history, Achievements and challenges. Welcome to the latest episode of the official Talking Pictures TV podcast - the podcast presented by the viewers of the nation's favourite archive TV and movie channel. In this episode: Doomwatch (1970 - 1972) The Last Man on Earth (1964) Orders are Orders (1955) Nowhere To Go (1958) So Long At The Fair (1950) The Green Cockatoo (1937) Plus a little something from Johnnie Ray thrown in for good measure
A rare straight acting role for Peter Sellers in 1960, Never Let Go starred Richard Todd as a man for whom life outside of uniform has never been easy, as he struggles to put food on the table and his problems multiply when his new car is stolen. The vehicle has been stolen to order by teen tearaway Adam Faith, who supplies local garage owner and all-round nasty piece of work Lionel Meadows (Sellers) with hot wheels which are subsequently re-plated and sold on. John Cummings (Todd) is determined to get his car back and in doing so risks his own life and that of his family. Sellers was rightly lauded for his portrayal of the sociopathic Meadows, although life off-screen was hardly harmonious for his wife and kids as he took the character home with him every evening after filming. Joining Tyler to discuss this important film is Scott Phipps, co-host of the Reel Britannia, Stinking Pause & Talking Pictures TV podcasts.

Well, what can I say? It has been quite a while since I sat in front of this microphone and recorded this podcast. It has to have been a whole year or more, as I have moved house since then! It is amazing what a change of location can do for you. The much brighter interior, and ample windows, provide a much cheery outlook. It makes me feel less reliant on classic comedy to brighten my Wednesday afternoons. Granted I'm still a regular watcher of Boy Meets World, Home Improvement and Golden Girls on Disney+, but my new outlook has allowed me to stray into new areas; Helped greatly by the channel Talking Pictures TV. Firstly, I can't be the only one who has fallen in love with Dixon of Dock Green for the first time recently. I didn't grow up in an era where Jack Warner's character was still on the beat, so it has been a nice surprise to find some enjoyment in his adventures. This show was always sold to me as a cosy remnant of the past, but without too much else to go with it. What I've found, certainly in the recently broadcast early existing episodes, is that Dixon was much grittier than I was ever led to believe. Just last week, saw Andy Crawford shot leading to a cliffhanger that was to be concluded in the next episode. Sadly the second part doesn't exist anymore. I've seen people turn to social media to express their disappointment. I must admit I felt the same, but it did prove something. Dixon still had the power to captivate and engage, all these years on. Next, witnessing Jack Hargreaves' Out of Town series has been a breath of fresh country air. Jack, I must admit, has been a figure I have admired for some time. Fred Dinenage once told me that Jack could pick up an object and discuss it without a script. Based on what I have seen, he was right. Jack, while the film plays over him, narrates many sections. In between he tells stories and gives explanations on objects. My son and I have become quite fans of this marvellous program, he still regularly talks about the one where Jack explained the workings of an old restored mill. I must admit that I often think about it too. The most striking thing is that schedulers have perhaps underestimated the value of Dixon and Jack for decades, perceiving their usefulness to have run out. Im sure they're not the only ones to have been vaulted, but perhaps it was more likely with these two, which have large amounts of their run missing; A problem in the age of TV binging. From what I see, it's all based on statistics now. The problem is if everyone took notice of them, Dixon and Hargreaves would've stayed in a vault. Their lack of reruns over the years has meant exposure has been low, reduced to anecdotal evidence based on tiny clips and nostalgia on cheap clip shows. Their resurgence has reassured their usefulness, and I love it. Maybe, looking from the other side, it was a good thing they'd been locked away for so long. It gave original audiences a beautiful reminder of a lost time, while everyone else got to discover it for the first time. In some ways, both get to have a fresh take on it. We get to evaluate the material, highlighting where society has changed since it last contributed to popular culture. We also get to be surprised by it, knowing that no matter how much time has passed, some things never change. So what else is there to say? I've said enough. If you have anything to say about the shows mentioned in this podcast, you can email Jamie@OldTimeReview.co.uk, tweet @OldTimeReview on Twitter or check out the Facebook page, Old Time Review. This is Jamie Dyer signing off.
Welcome to the latest edition of the Talking Pictures TV podcast The show which is made possible by you, the viewers of Talking Pictures TV, the nation's favourite archive tv This week we've got hidden Nazi treasure and Helen Shapiro (two things I can guarantee you've probably never heard in the same sentence before), we have an elephant crossing the Alps, a Brighton murder mystery, and the wonderful Michael Dennison and Dulcie Gray.
It's been a while, but we are happy as heck to welcome back writer, journalist and From the Sublime editor Iain Hepburn back to the show for a long chat about some classic British popular culture (and other stuff). We start with the recent passing of film and tv music composer Laurie Johnson at age 96. Although probably best known for The Avengers (and New Avengers) themes, he had a long career that includes Jason King and The Professionals on TV and films including Dr. Strangelove. We talk about his career and other British TV composers like Ron Grainer (The Prisoner and Doctor Who) and Edwin Astley (Randall and Hopkirk Decased, Danger Man). This leads into a chat about 1960 British shows, the ones that made it to the US and the ones that didn't and the fun of spotting actors on those before before they were famous. Then, there's plenty of chat about Doctor Who and the return of Russell T. Davies to run the show. We talk about how the vast Doctor Who library is now on BBC iplayer, the Tales of the Tardis special featuring classic cast members, modernizing old episodes for a contemporary audience and the hunt for missing episodes. This segues into a chat about physical media, streaming services, the phenomenon of Talking Pictures TV in the UK, preservation and restoration of older programs, how that relates to classic wresting TV shows and more. There's also chat about Iain's magazine From the Sublime, who third/fourth issue is currently in production. We talk about the previous issues and some of the topics, including a Buck Rogers-themed restaurant in Glascow in the 1980s and futbol kit culture, including an unexpected discussion of the NASL and MLS. If you want a copy of From the Sublime and you order from their website, enter “WINTERPALACE” for 15% discount. It's always great to talk to Iain about stuff, so hopefully it won't be more than eight years before he is back on the podcast.

When blackmailer Dennis Price threatens to dig the dirt on Peter Sellers, Terry-Thomas, Peggy Mount and Shirley Eaton the four of them do everything in their power to stop him! Wee Sonny McGregor (Sellers) risks irreparable damage to his reputation as a cuddly television personality if his second job as a slum landlord is revealed; Lord Mayley (Terry-Thomas) has been indiscreet in a park and his wife must never find out; author Flora Ransom (Mount) fears book sales will suffer should her wild past in Shanghai be exposed; and model Melissa Right (Eaton)… well, we don't actually find out what she did but all she wants is the love and affection of her Texan boyfriend! The Naked Truth (1957) was Sellers' first opportunity to really showcase his talents as a comedy chameleon, assume different personas and build upon his Goon Show reputation as the man of a thousand voices. Written by Michael Pertwee and directed by Mario Zampi it is a wonderful ensemble piece with terrific performances from all the leads, especially Sellers and the formidable Peggy Mount. My guest this week is radio enthusiast Noel Tyrrel, founder of the David Hamilton's Hot Shots fan site and someone who has an encyclopaedic knowledge and collection of vintage radio shows. Noel grew up with radio, and we learn why the person who awakened his interest was David Hamilton. We talk about why Junior Choice was so special and whether the sort of radio presenting that Ed Stewart and David Hamilton epitomized is in ascendance any more. We also find out why David Hamilton is called ‘one take Hamilton'. Noel talks about what it was like to meet his radio heroes and we hear about the time Noel was at the supermarket checkout and who should ring to apologize for not playing ‘Paddy McKinty's Goat', which Noel had requested for his young daughter on the Christmas edition of Christmas Junior Choice, but Stewpot himself. He talks about what was so clever about the Jimmy Young show, and how we could never work out what JY's political sympathies were. We discuss JY's previous incarnation as a crooner and we learn what Noel thinks about JY's successor, Jeremy Vine. Both of Noel's parents were actors and through them he met many showbiz types. He talks about Simon Dee and we find out why Noel would categorize himself as a frustrated journalist. We learn why Noel so enjoys disseminating David Hamilton's BOOM Radio show on social media and writing a synopsis of each programme. He explains why he is a sounding board for David Hamilton and we find out whether Noel himself would be interested in doing a radio show of his own. He tells us why radio plays are better than their TV counterparts, why radio will far outlast TV, and why radio is so wonderful because one can listen to it while ‘on the move'. At the end of the interview we learn whether Noel is a looking back or looking forward type of person, what he thinks of Benny Hill and Talking Pictures TV and why he respects things for the period in which they were made. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Noel Tyrrel and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.
