After more than 12 years of doing this podcast, it was high time for us to review something by French director Jean-Pierre Melville. Le Samourai was his (and his star, Alain Delon's) homage to '40s Hollywood noir. This crime classic is about Delon's passive hitman, who's either too cool for school...or just doesn't care. In this one-Ryan show, the talk gets into  relating to Delon's loner mindset and solo lifestyle, although not so much his sparse apartment, his constant smoking or his work as a contract killer. Or having a chirpie bird for a roommate. The ending is puzzling...but it might be more understandable when you remember the code of an actual samurai. So put on your white gloves, pull out your heater and prepare for episode #668 of Have You Ever Seen. Melville's film didn't predate the French New Wave, but he himself did. He, Godard, Truffaut, all of 'em could no doubt have been even more prolific back in those days if they had Sparkplug Coffee. Writer and critic Matthew Specktor, author of the new novel The Golden Hour, joins hosts Harry and Daniel to discuss Joseph Losey's haunting 1976 film Mr. Klein. Set in Nazi-occupied France during the lead-up to the infamous Vel d'Hiv roundup of Jews, the film follows Alain Delon as an art dealer who becomes ensnared in a chilling case of mistaken identity with another man who may be Jewish—and may not even exist.Together, they first talk about real life cases of mistaken identities of their lives. Then the trio move on to explore the film's Kafkaesque tone, its eerie resonance with contemporary concerns about identity and complicity, and how Mr. Klein confronts France's legacy of antisemitism and historical erasure. With the episode's release coinciding with Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, we hope you'll find added connection to the day and think of those lost.Purchase Matthew's new book, The Golden HourFollow Matthew Specktor on InstagramMr Klein Movie TrailerMr Klein on IMDbConnect with Jews on Film online:Jews on Film Merch - https://jews-on-film.printify.me/productsInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/jewsonfilm/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jewsonfilmpodYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@jewsonfilmTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jewsonfilmpodRead less

We discuss Visconti's final film, currently available to see through the BFI streaming service, in conjunction with the Visconti season recently held at the Southbank, and in a lush and lovely print. Richard had to convince me to podcast on this and I'm glad we did. We both think it a great film, without being anywhere near Visconti's greatest, a measure of the director's extraordinary achievements. Here we discuss it in relation to D'Annunzzio's original novel (The Intruder is the literal translation of the novel's Italian title); the lushness of décor and costuming, which sometimes seem a John Singer Sargent painting come to life; how the mise-en-scène vividly and complexly conveys character feeling, often without dialogue, and with such skill it can make a viewer swoony with admiration; we talk of how Alain Delon and Romy Schneider were originally cast and admire the performances of Giancarlo Giannini, Jennifer O'Neill, Laura Antonelli and Rina Morelli. It was also lovely to (barely) recognise Massimo Girotti, so beautiful in OSSESSIONE, as one of Giannini's rivals for Jennifer O'Neill's favours. We discuss the auction scene, and the fencing scene between husband lover in some detail; how the film reminds us of the 19th century novel in its narrative sweep, melodramatic accents and its dramatization of complex ideas (faith vs science, moral actions in a world without God, marriage vs free love, equality between the sexes, etc.). A world of feeling and desire, fuelled by melodrama; a beautiful film slightly marred by its ending. We discuss all of this and more here:

Vintage Sand listeners this month will get something of a twofer, a BOGO episode. Since we really have not had the chance to do a full necrology since July, Michael takes the time to relate the accomplishments of some very bright lights in the film business that have gone out over the past four months. These include artists who leave behind a great legacy and holes that can never really be filled, including people like Dame Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones and Alain Delon. Before we get to that point, though, we begin with a very different kind of eulogy: our reflections on Francis Ford Coppola's summa, the egregious "Megalopolis". We felt, as we did for Scorsese in our episodes on both "The Irishman" and "Killers of the Flower Moon", that a sprawling work by one of our greatest filmmakers, in this case a film that had a gestation period of nearly fifty years, deserved to be examined both in its own right as a work of art and in context as part of its creator's career. In hindsight, it's risible to think that at the end of the 70's, film fans were heatedly debating who among the heroes of the American New Wave would end up with the greater career: Scorsese or Coppola? (Let's not even talk about some of the others around the periphery of that conversation at the time, like De Palma, Bogdanovich, Friedkin, Rafelson, Cimino, Lucas and yes, perhaps even Spielberg—although, surprisingly, Paul Schrader has been coming up with a few late-period masterpieces). Megalopolis ends that debate, and stands, as I referred to "Eyes Wide Shut" relative to Kubrick's career in our episode devoted to that film, as a cardboard tombstone to the career of a gifted filmmaker. While the members of Team Vintage Sand, whose bottomless intrepidity was confirmed by each of us successfully wading through (a la Andy Dufresne) the 2 ½ hours of dreck that is "Megalopolis", did find the occasional positive to light on, for the most part it was an example of a work of incredible consistency, in that just about every choice Coppola makes as writer and director was the wrong one. Perhaps the comparison with Scorsese is unfair, and certainly nothing could ever erase the impact of Coppola's four films of the 1970's, or even the smaller delights of his later work (Mike's a fan of "The Cotton Club", and I've always thought that "Tucker" was a much better film than its reputation dictates). But for us, the truth is that between the gratuitous literary and high culture references, the sophomoric philosophizing that would make any actual 10th grader cringe, the derivative film tributes sprinkled throughout (including, unbelievably, a moment where the film appears to physically burn up in the projector—a brilliant idea had Bergman not done it 60 years ago in "Persona"), and a script that even good actors like Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito can't save, "Megalopolis" was, quite unintentionally, the funniest film of the year—and given how much we love and admire its creator, the most painful. Once can only hope that this is not Coppola's final statement, and that in future efforts he will trust his audience, not try so hard to impress us with his erudition, and remember what made him so great in the first place

Happy Noirvember! On the thirty- first episode of ATFT, movie critic Matthieu Côté joins me in analyzing Jean- Pierre Melville's 1967 neo- noir classic, Le Samouraï! This episode is spoiler- filled.  Le Samouraï is regarded as one of the most influential films of all time, inspiring a plethora of films including Taxi Driver (1976), Drive (2011), and The Killer (2023). The film follows highly- skilled hit- man Jef Costello, played by Alain Delon, as he simultaneously carries out a job and his alibi but his careful plans soon go awry. The audience then watches Jef as he maneuvers his way around the police and the criminals who hired him. Le Samouraï, like Easy Rider, is a show- don't- tell film, meaning the more you watch it, the more you gain. We watch the characters and story unfold without there being too much dialogue. Films like these are the most rewarding to analyze and, when done right, become lauded as masterpieces. Le Samouraï cemented Alain Delon as massive star in cinema and many regard this film as his best.  Matthieu is a Canadian movie critic who writes for Horror Quebéc. He has interviewed several prominent directors with the most prominent thus- far being Ari Aster. Most recently, he interviewed director Timo Tjahjanto ahead of his new film The Shadow Strays. Watch his interview here!: https://youtu.be/-qDsUozgrFg?si=ITMrxcNEhYfTzGH5. Matthieu also has his own YouTube channel where he analyzes and reviews both films and television shows old and new. His analyses are truly excellent, I highly recommend subscribing to his channel… here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/@matthieucote2272/videos.   This is Matthieu's first appearance on ATFT! Funny enough, we got connected through the comments of his YouTube video, “The Eyes Of Past Lives” about a year ago! His video greatly helped me prepare for last year's episode on the film Past Lives so I left a comment telling him how brilliant his analysis was and that I gave him and his video a shout out in that episode. He responded very graciously and said he would love to come on the show sometime. I always kept this in mind so, when I switched the film being discussed for Noirvember this year, I thought I'd ask Matthieu if he was interested and within 24 hours, we scheduled a time to record this episode! This episode was recorded on October 17, 2024.  In this episode, Matthieu and I analyze Le Samouraï while also pay tribute to one of cinema's greats, Alain Delon, who passed away this past August. Matthieu talks about his long- time appreciation for this film, even considering it among his very favorite films of all time. We discuss various aspects of the film including how Le Samouraï compares to American noir films of the 1940s as well as recent films that were inspired by this film, the power and emotion only Alain Delon can give through his eyes alone, and Jef's accomplice: his pet bird.
