"It ain't easy having pals." We watched Young Guns (1988) with our good friend Millie De Chirico from the podcast "Dear Movies, I Love You", and we can give you six reasons why the West was so wild in the 1980s: it's our boys Emilio, Kiefer, Lou, Dermot, Casey, and Charlie. In a time where Western movies were in a dry patch, these young men helped breathe life into a dying genre. Photographed like a hair band music video, we're thankful there were power outlets in the Old West to plug in the hairdryers needed to blow out and feather these manes of 80s hair. We discuss our relationships with the six Brat Pack (and Brat Pack adjacent) cast; if any of us have actually seen the original "Young Guns" or just confuse it with "Young Guns 2"; and speculate what new young cast could possibly work in a Young Guns 3.  Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna Cover Art by Shaun Piela

Imagine a dystopian America where authority is malignant, the profit motive rules all, everyone is on the grift, all goods and services have been devalued to the least of their utility and value, and the infrastructure has crumbled into a depressing echo of its former self… this morning's New York Times? No! It's Alex Cox's punk rock masterpiece Repo Man! Made in that special time before John Hughes and the Brat Pack got their hooks in him, Emilio Estevez embodies youth in revolt as he teams up with Harry Dean Stanton at his scuzziest, most viciously nicotine-stained best to get into some tense situations. Step into the 1980s Ronnie Reagan did NOT want you to know about: where aliens are real, televangelists occasionally moonlight as government agents, television holds a hypnotic sway over your parents, and, most importantly, the threat of the Rodriguez Brothers looms around every corner! Politically biting, socially trenchant, and as fucking hilarious as a can of generic beer and poke to the eye with a lit cigarette, Repo Man may just be the angriest and most prophetic mainstream film of its time - and even more surprisingly, it's one of Paul's formative favorites! Steven Yeun, Sam Richardson, aliens, base‑3 language, Men in Black — and somehow still no actual story. We break down why this glossy little short feels more like a pitch deck than a film. Finally, we saddle up as our Cruise Rewatch hits Young Guns territory. Cruise appears for roughly the length of a sneeze, but that won't stop us from over‑analysing it like it's a lost Kubrick cameo.Three segments, three wildly different vibes, one very confused podcast. An Unscientific Examination of Male Friendship Across America." Andrew's cross-country journey to reconnect with old friends revealed a surprising truth: men are facing a loneliness epidemic — and most don't even know it. From the myths of toxic masculinity to the power of vulnerability, and the role technology plays in eroding real human connection, this conversation unpacks why so many men struggle to form and keep meaningful friendships. Packed with personal stories and a powerful call to embrace vulnerability, this episode is essential listening for any man who wants deeper, more authentic connections in his life. Many men feel isolated and rely on their wives to manage social lives. Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness in men, hindering friendships. Friendships require active effort and vulnerability to flourish. Loneliness among men is a significant issue, often exacerbated by technology. Older men are less likely to admit feelings of loneliness compared to younger men. Social interaction is crucial for mental and physical health. Send me a text! I'd LOVE to hear your feedback on this episode! Why were we less afraid in the 80s, even though life was objectively more dangerous? In this episode of Sandy K Nutrition Health & Lifestyle Queen Podcast, I explore the dramatic shift from the unfiltered, unsupervised, analog childhoods of the 80s to today's hyper‑connected, hyper‑observed digital world. I unpack how a generation raised on hallway politics, real‑world problem‑solving, and genuine anonymity developed naturally resilient nervous systems, while modern life is pushing us toward chronic fear, overstimulation, and emotional fragility. This episode blends nostalgia with grounded science to explain why so many people feel anxious, overwhelmed, and constantly “on alert.” I break down the psychological and biological forces shaping today's fear culture, including Mean World Syndrome, the Panopticon Effect, and the rise of safetyism. I also share a powerful moment about my almost-89‑year‑old father's wisdom, whose old‑school words reveal a truth our nervous systems desperately need: strategic information boundaries are not avoidance - they are biological protection. What makes this episode different is my scientifically and logically rooted solutions - practical, accessible, and grounded in nervous‑system physiology, metabolic stability, and behavioral psychology. These are not hacks or trends. They are evidence‑informed protocols anyone can follow to reduce digital overwhelm, rebuild competence, restore metabolic steadiness, and reconnect with the uncurated version of yourself that existed before life became a 24/7 performance. If you're tired of feeling overstimulated, anxious, or disconnected from your own strength, this episode offers a nostalgic and deeply practical roadmap back to resilience. It's a call to step out of performance mode, reclaim your internal locus of control, and rebuild the grounded, capable, unfiltered human you were always meant to be.If this resonated, tap follow, share it with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a quick review so more people can find the show. The Breakfast Club (1985) was chosen by Patreon supporter Lucky LouLou Green, and it stands as one of the defining films of 1980s American cinema. Written, produced, and directed by John Hughes, the movie was made during an incredibly prolific period for the filmmaker, as he reshaped teen movies with a more honest, character-driven approach. Shot on a modest budget of around $1 million, the film was produced quickly, with Hughes deliberately stripping away flashy set pieces to focus on dialogue, performance, and atmosphere. Principal photography took place at Maine North High School in Des Plaines, Illinois — a real, unused school that Hughes would return to multiple times throughout his career. The production schedule was famously short — just 28 days — and Hughes encouraged collaboration, allowing the young cast to contribute ideas and personal experiences to their roles. Several moments of dialogue were improvised or rewritten on set, helping give the film its natural, conversational feel that set it apart from other teen movies of the era. Composer Keith Forsey provided the now-iconic soundtrack, perfectly capturing the mood of mid-80s youth culture. Upon release, The Breakfast Club became both a commercial and cultural success, cementing Hughes' reputation and turning its cast into defining faces of a generation. Today, the film is widely regarded as a landmark of 1980s filmmaking — proof that a small budget, a single location, and strong creative confidence can produce something timeless.

Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to spend a Saturday in detention watching John Hughes's 1985 classic, The Breakfast Club. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us: a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Right? This week, Josh, Garrett, and David revisit Shermer High School to see if this quintessential Brat Pack film still connects in 2025. We break down the iconic character archetypes we related to then and now, the surprisingly well-written scenes that pack an emotional punch , and the parts that are... well, more problematic than we remembered. From Bender's aggressive "flirting" to the vice principal's shocking $31,000 salary, we explore what has and hasn't aged well.Does this coming-of-age touchstone still earn its classic status, or have we grown up and apart from it? Let us know your take, and don't forget to subscribe and leave us a five-star review (or four, so we have something to work toward! ).

Now, for those of you who don't know, I'm an 80s kid. By that, I mean I turned 16 at the end of that decade. I grew up with posters of Ralph Macchio and Michael J Fox on my wall, I went to see New Kids on the Block in concert, and when I read about The Brat Pack in newspapers and magazines (social media was not a thing), I wanted to be a member of that group. From media released long after that time, it appears that while fans wanted to be part of the gang, the gang itself was not overly happy with the label they were given by David Blum in his 1985 New Yorker article. In 2021, Andrew McCarthy released his autobiography, which talked a little about his experiences as an '80s heartthrob, and in 2024, he produced a documentary exploring the impact this label had on him and his fellow Brat Packers! This week, I met up with my friend Lorraine, and as we're both very proud '80s kids, we talked about the autobiography, the documentary and our perceptions of what it meant to us. Yep, this week is different. Welcome again to Lorraine, and join us both on a trip back in time, when things were easier, when the Goonies were doing the truffle shuffle, Jake Ryan was waiting outside our house, standing in front of a Porsche and wearing a gross pink satin prom dress got you the boy of your dreams!

It's just Kevin and Lauren this week... until it isn't... and then it is again. There's a lot to talk about, with The Outsiders the Musical, The Last of Us Season 2 Finale, Bad Shabbos, The Fountain of Youth, and The Last Showgirl. Lauren kicks off the show by talk about The Outsiders, last years Tony Award winner for best musical. If you recognize the name, it is in fact the same as the '80s Brat Pack film. While that might sounds like it shouldn't work, it absolutely does. With a great set design and score, the show really is spectacular. As Lauren was discussing that show, Andrew (who had already told everyone he had better things to do than waste his evening with them, mind you) popped in. This gave him and Kevin the chance to talk about the last 2 episodes of The Last of Us Season 2. The agreement is that episode 6 was spectacular and the finale was solid and Andrew, with a little time to ruminate, has found himself understanding Abby's story and Ellie's shortcomings a little more than before. All in all it's a great finish and cliffhanger for a solid season. After Andrew exits only slightly less unceremoniously than he arrived, Lauren talks about the indy film, Bad Shobbos. It's a low budget comedy with a cast of actors you'd recognize but most likely can't name beyond Kira Sedgwick, but it's wonderfully done and a great time. It's a movie that reminds us to look beyond the name on the poster and see what's really being put on the screen and most definitely worth a watch. Next up, Kevin talks about The Fountain of Youth, which is almost the exact opposite situation as Bad Shobbos. Here you have a stellar cast with John Krazinzky, Ntalie Portman, Stanley Tucci, Eiza Gonzalez, and more. Not only that, it's a big budget adventure film. But with all of that, it lacks the heart that  something small and special like Bad Shobbos has, proving the point again, it's not the names on the poster, but what's been put to film. Lauren closes the show with The Last Showgirl. This one stirred up a lot of Award Season buzz last year with the resurgence of Pamela Anderson.
