One of the most followed stained glass artists on social media, Meggy Wilm of Colorado Glass Works, Boulder, Colorado, shares her creations with nearly 275K (and growing) followers on Instagram – attracting a new audience of young enthusiasts to the medieval craft. Wilm and her husband Dustin Mayfield also recently purchased Boulder-based D&L Art Glass Supply from Leslie Silverman, who dedicated 50 years to the company she founded. Experienced entrepreneurs, Wilm and Mayfield have a deep appreciation for the art glass industry and a forward-thinking vision for D&L. Her first company, Colorado Glass Works is a multifaceted art glass business where Wilm teaches a variety of classes, sells and ships sheet glass around the world, designs her own custom sheet glass, and creates small and large commissions for private clients. She has been creating stained art glass for the last seven years and has a deep love of all things nature- and glass-related. States Wilm: “I founded Colorado Glass Works in the fall of 2017 sitting criss-crossed on my living room floor in Denver, Colorado. My passion is creating dreamy and colorful stained glass art pieces ranging from mini sun-catchers to fully installable windows. I imagine, custom design, and hand-make every single one of my pieces with attention to every little detail.” Beginning on January 1, 2020, Wilm made a commitment to donate a percentage of her glass profits amongst her five favorite environmental organizations – The Sierra Club, The Marine Conservation Institute, the Rainforest Action Network, Defenders of Wildlife, and The Environmental Defense Fund. In 2024, through purchases of Wilm's art, she raised $10,000 and donated those funds to help protect our planet. Each of her chosen nonprofit organizations received $2,000 to continue their efforts. Raising larger amounts each year, in 2024 Wilm was able to expand on her altruistic goals and donate stained glass art supplies, classes, and glass to schools in need. Eight deserving schools across the United States received full beginner stained glass startup kits to introduce stained glass as an elective or after-school activity. These kits included tools, classes, and materials valued at over $10,000, giving students the opportunity to explore stained glass. Wilm says: “Together, we made a total of $20,678 in donations to causes that truly matter. None of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for being part of this journey. I am so thrilled we get to work together in making a small impact to help protect this beautiful world we live in.” In addition to running Colorado Glass Works, and taking the wheel at D&L, Wilm will be a TA for Ted Ellison at Pilchuck from May 22 – 29, 2025. Keep your eye on social media for more of the artist's beautiful Colorado landscapes, sparkling snowflakes and signature textured or dichroic Monstera leaves.

This week the HortWeek Podcast meets Imogen Bell, supervisor at Thomson's Garden Centre and a YPHA Southeast regional coordinatorIn her article for HortWeek 'Despite CITES, not all doom and gloom for houseplant sales' Imogen reflects on how the reinterpretation of CITES "meant practically a third of my stock became unavailable overnight". One of the "Brexit benefits" often quoted was the possibility that more friction across the borders would encourage clients to buy British and boost British-grown plants. As tightening border controls cause unprecedented chaos at BCPs Imogen might be feeling a degree of relief that she took the decision to switch to British houseplant nurseries months ago."Cacti, carnivorous plants, the majority of orchids... it's almost impossible to import, which is obviously quite a large part of most houseplant departments."Luckily, I was already having looking into UK growers after Brexit - just in case anything got super difficult to import. And at the same time a lot of UK nurseries then opened up to garden centres - Oppenman's plants, Double H, Hills Brothers all opened up to garden centres about the same time.I was already ordering from them so I just got to order in much higher volume. The only plants she's struggled with are more unusual orchids, she says, but initiatives such as Horti House which allows nurseries to trade as one unit is helping."You get some great nurseries in there like Dibley's who do Streptocarpus and Begonia.. and where before you would have to order either half a trolley or a whole trolley, you can now just order by the tray which means you can get a good range of more unusual things without having to kind of put all your eggs in one basket with a specific supplier."She talks about the challenge of competing with supermarkets with their economies of scale, "but on the other hand, I think if you look at any supermarket at their house plant department, it is all half-dead... where garden centers and other plant shops really stand out is the level of knowledge and customer service they can offer".At Thomson's she has added labels showing the air miles for plants on sale: "I'd like to introduce UK suppliers and just extend that so you can say this orchid or Monstera or whatever has come from 40 miles away and it's come from this nursery and it's a family -run business. I think it just adds to the value of the plant to be able to give it that origin."It surprises her that, given the huge rise in popularity of houseplants in recent years, many garden centres fail to put on a good display.New trends she is seeing include Marimo moss balls. They grow like a couple of millimetres a year. But for some reason they were flying off the shelves." The appeal for many customers she says, are plants that "thrive off neglect".On peat-free, Imogen says customers are asking for it and garden centres are moving in that direction, ban or no ban. "Horti House is peat-free and again out of necessity I guess the other ones will come into line" she says.On peat-free composts, she says: "I've noticed more and more people are mixing their own soils. So instead of just getting a packet off the shelf, they're buying a base and then they're buying perlite or coir or coco husk and then blending it for the specific plant".And will the houseplant boom continue?"I'm not sure we'll quite get the sky high sales we had during the lockdowns...They've plateaued since, but the interest is consistent. I don't think house plants will go away." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Houseplants can be fun and fulfilling to grow. You always should grow the right houseplant for your room, but another fun way to choose houseplants is to select them based on Zodiac signs. Zodiac signs can correspond to your personality traits. For example, if your Zodiac sign is Aries you may have a lot of fire and like to stay active and busy. Then perhaps a snake plant or ZZ plant, that requires little care, is best for you? If your Zodiac sign is Taurus, you may find yourself to be hard working, tenacious and see things through. Maybe you should try a more difficult houseplant that requires extra care, such as a fiddle leaf fig or orchid. Capricorns tend to be very practical, serious people. That's why growing herbs and edibles indoors in a sunny window or under lights would suit this sign perfectly. The Pisces sign symbolizes intuition and luck. The money plant is an easy to grow houseplant loaded with good fortune and prosperity symbolism. Some plants equate to Zodiac signs because of their names. Peace lilies resonate with Libra which is ruled by the love planet, Venus. Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, is known for big, grand gestures. Why not grow a big, grand houseplant such as Monstera or rubber tree? Cancer is ruled by the moon which a closely associated with fertility. Why not a houseplant that reproduces easily such as a spider plant? You could go on and on looking for plants that associate with a zodiac sign. It's a fun way to get friends interested in houseplants and the symbolism they hold.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We changed our name! Bloom & Grow Radio is now Growing Joy with Maria! This is just a mini episode reminding you that this week you'll see our name and podcast art change. But don't worry: it's the same Maria, same planty heart and inspiration, just a new upgraded look inspired by my book: Growing Joy: The Plant Lover's Guide to Cultivating Happiness. I feel like this rebrand is like a juvenile Monstera that has grown into a fenestrated one!Last week's episode titled “We're Growing” is a deep dive on the motivations behind this rebrand.  My business coach actually interviews ME about everything that's gone on behind the scenes since I took this podcast full time. Here are the improvements you'll enjoy this year because of this rebrand:Weekly episodes instead of every other week2 episodes about plant care per month (which is what B&GR currently delivered) and then two MORE episodes that can be community panels about plants/gardening or interviews with wellness experts who specialize in nature based therapies like forest bathing, horticultural therapy, biophilia, plant intelligence and more. So we've DOUBLED the content! On this mini episode, I take you behind the scenes of the audio design and inspiration for our new theme song. Get excited to explore how to build a rich, beautiful, joyful life alongside your plants. This year is going to be filled with so much UNBELIEVABLE educational content to help you 1) care for your plants successfully but then 2) take it to the next level and explore just why plants make us happy and how plant care can be the most effective form of self care. Let's keep blooming and keep growing JOY, Plant Friends!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
