On this episode, Terrene Collins, Director of Legal Operations and Chief of Staff to Chief Legal Officer at Panasonic North America, joins Mary to talk about her career path. Like many legal ops professionals, Terrene is seeing massive rate increases from law firms, and she is pushing back, as difficult as that might be. She will look at rates from prior years, and if she sees a budget-busting significant rate increase, sometimes as much as 20% or 25%, she will call the firm out. Terrene has worked in various industries including financial services, pharma and technology. She talks about the differences she has experienced between the industries, which are often based on how long the company has had a legal ops department. She gives valuable insights on how to work with a GC and a CLO, and how to determine what it is they are looking for in order to move the organization forward. Terrene says the hardest part of the job is figuring out organizational priorities. Her focus for this year is to understand ways to drive savings in dealing with their outside counsel and to find ways for her team to add value to the organization. On August 4, 2021, I decided to bring to light an injustice that is often swept under the rug in the disabled community. On April 16th, 2019, after many inappropriate comments from previous doctor visits, I was sexually harassed by a male Nurse. I knew early on that his conduct was inappropriate and was getting out of hand. However, I knew no one would believe me without some type of proof that it happened. Here's why. It is said that 90% of disabled individuals are abused 10 or more times in their lifetime. It may be physical, sexual, verbal or just being taken advantage of. The majority of their offenders are relatives, close family members, or people who have authority over them. Most incidents are not reported because the victims are dependent on their offenders, have the fear of not being believed by authorities, or they are afraid of the repercussion of reporting someone who has authority over them. Therefore, I decided that I needed to get proof of the misconduct before I go public. During the last two visits, I was able to get audio recordings using my iPhone. The recordings reveal verbal sexual harassment and there were moments of silence when the actual physical sexual harassment occurred. Before I go forward with my story, readers should know, I decided not to make public the names of the doctor or nurse until the proper protocol is established and as things begin to develop. The day I reported my incident, the officer asked me was I under sudation and just believed it happened. Then he got on the phone with another officer and said he has a gentleman in a wheelchair that thinks he was sexually assaulted. What he said is a prime example of what disabled victims want to avoid and therefore decide never to report the abuse. To hear his poor choice of words made me think he was doubting what happen. At that moment I realized many will not believe me simply because I am a man, gay and disabled. Not to mention, our society does not want to acknowledge that we are depraved enough to take advantage of an individual with a disability. Unfortunately, I know from experience, our society is depraved enough to take advantage of vulnerable people. A couple of weeks later the Nurse was arrested by the Fulton County Police and charged with Sexual Battery and Exploitation. These charges were not brought forward solely based on my testimony and audio recordings; the Fulton County Police did an investigation and they found enough evidence to charge him. The Houston Chronicle’s review of Sarah Adleman’s The Lampblack Blue of Memory: My Mother Echoes (Tolsun 2019) praises that the book “dissects the feelings that have been a part of her since her mother's death with the precision and brutality of a poet and all the awful beauty of a perfectly performed major surgery...It's one of the most beautiful things you're likely to read.” Adleman’s collection, a gorgeous hybrid of poetry and memoir, is a journey through grief and forgiveness. The author’s debut book uses both the personal and the informative to examine and preserve the loss, grief, and cleansing set in motion by her mother’s death. She honors her mother not only in the crafting of these shared memories, but also in the actual formatting of the text itself. Adleman gives her mother voice by including her own work interwoven throughout the retelling. The author does not shy away from the heaviness of absence, her personal reaction to the events, and especially not the profound changes to her father. She unfurls these emotions in the light and scrubs away the haze. She leaves us with the “bliss at the core of our beings” and challenges us to walk beside her to the other side. Sarah Adleman was born and raised between the bayous of Houston, the swamps of Louisiana, and the desert of El Paso. She was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bangladesh, studied yoga in India, and taught English in China. Sarah earned her MFA from The University of Texas at El Paso and works as a Certified Yoga Therapist specializing in Traumatic Brain Injury survivors. Her work has been published, acknowledged, or is forthcoming in Kindred Magazine, Terrene, Glimmer Train, and America Writers Review. Sarah’s first book The Lampblack Blue of Memory: My Mother Echoes is a finalist for the Colorado Book Awards in Creative Nonfiction and for the Eric Hoffer/da Vinci Eye Award. She lives in Denver with her husband, almost two year old son, and their thirteen year old dog. Athena Dixon is a NE Ohio native, poet, essayist, and editor. Her essay collection, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, is forthcoming from Split/Lip Press (2020). Athena is also the author of No God in This Room, a poetry chapbook (Argus House Press). Terrene is an adjective that means earthly or mundane and also a noun that means earth or terrain. Terra (TEAR uh) is the Latin word for earth. When used as a noun, the word is basically the same as terrain, but with a different spelling. As an adjective it is a synonym of worldly, as in: As a younger person, I focused mostly on terrene matters. But as I’ve gotten older, I realized that there are spiritual matters that are far more important.

#1 Terrene, 'of, or like earth', focuses on the physicality of land and air. Dungeness, UK: wind, gravel, Hokkaido, Japan: crows in the mountain, snow, Polyrrhenia ruins, Crete: aquaduct at night, Ubud, Bali: running stream, insects in rice paddy fields, Budapest, Hungary: tunnel, Chicago: subway, Unknown, Hong Kong: construction in distance, Belgium: car warehouse, Unknown: thunderstorm, snow. Drawing inspiration from a story during a journey to the abandoned Arctic settlement of Pyramiden, Ubi Sunt is the culmination of years of collected sonic moments. It was said that from this archipelago in the far north, left behind by all of its 1000 inhabitants for over a decade, ‘ghost’ radio signals had suddenly been detected. A singer whose family were from the original town had been sent an anonymous cassette tape, with recordings of them picked up from the region. Ubi Sunt is a new audio work by Flora Yin-Wong, commissioned by Somerset House Studios, composed of a tetralogy of sound pieces that abruptly jump between, cut up and stitch over six years of recordings captured in known and unknown locations - unlabelled and often lost sources. The connection between memory, emotion, and recorded moments that have accumulated on an iPhone is something that everyone could have their own version of. Hundreds of these snippets represent connections between the recall of memories, alternate worlds and spaces intangible, yet can be connected to across physical spaces. In collaboration with artist Go Watanabe, the series will be accompanied by artwork that adopts the underlying themes via the camera work of the film. The scene slowly moves horizontally from left to right, which reminds of the viewer the movement of playing cassette tapes, or driving a car through a road. Household objects are placed as if they are constructing a town. The objects were developed submerged in natural light from a window, but for this piece, the shade remains on the surfaces in a new space of absolute darkness. The remaining shadows are the metaphor of memories that carried from the past, said to emerge as ghosts. Varying from the sound of deep crunching snow in a forest in Hokkaido, Turkish EDM on the car radio, the rush of a reservoir in rural Wales, Buddhist monks chanting in Hangzhou, K-Pop in a teen clothing store in Seoul, and old vocal recordings - fragments that shift from the highly personal, nostalgic, to the extremely banal, or contrived and obnoxious are momentarily placed together. Flora Yin-Wong is a London-born, Chinese-Malaysian artist working with field recordings, dissonance, and influences from contemporary club culture.
