Book 101 Review
Harry Harambee's Kenyan Sundowner by Gerald Everett Jones.

Winner of 7 Book Awards in Literary Fiction - Included in the Prize-Winning Literary Fiction Series from LaPuerta Books and MediaIntrigue on the white sands of the Indian Ocean. From the award-winning author of Clifford's Spiral. A lonely widower from Los Angeles buys a tour package to East Africa on the promise of hookups and parties. What he finds instead are new reasons to live. Aldo Barbieri, a slick Italian tour operator, convinces Harry to join a group of adventuresome “voluntourists.” In a resort town on the Indian Ocean, Harry doesn't find the promised excitement with local ladies. But in the supermarket he meets Esther Mwemba, a demure widow who works as a bookkeeper. The attraction is strong and mutual, but Harry gets worried when he finds out that Esther and Aldo have a history. They introduce him to Victor Skebelsky, rumored to be the meanest man in town. Skebelsky has a plan to convert his grand colonial home and residential compound into a rehab center – as a tax dodge. The scheme calls for Harry to head up the charity. He could live like a wealthy diplomat and it won't cost him a shilling! Harry has to come to terms with questions at the heart of his character: Is corruption a fact of life everywhere? Is all love transactional? Harry Harambee's Kenyan Sundowner is an emotional story of expat intrigue in Africa, reminiscent of The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene and The Constant Gardener by John le Carré. Praise for Clifford's Spiral (Independent Press Awards 2020 Distinguished Favorite in Literary Fiction) We've seen and noted the comparison of this author by other reviewers to literary giants like Roth and Vonnegut. And we can't disagree. Yet we feel there may be yet another strata for Gerald Everett Jones, who arguably is doing the best work of his career. We predict that he lacks only a mention in the The New York Review of Books or, better yet, Oprah, to become a nationwide best-selling author. Five-plus stars to Clifford's Spiral, a true literary novel if ever there was one. We say in all seriousness that if you only read one novel this year, this should be it. - Don Sloan, Publishers Daily Reviews Preacher Finds a Corpse (NYC Big Book Awards 2020 Winner in Mystery, IPA 2020 Distinguished Favorite in Mystery, Eric Hoffer 2020 Finalist in Mystery) This is literature masquerading as a mystery. Carefully yet powerfully, Gerald Jones creates a small, stunning world in a tiny midwestern town, infusing each character with not just life but wit, charm, and occasionally menace. This is the kind of writing one expects from John Irving or Jane Smiley. - Marvin J. Wolf, author of the Rabbi Ben Mysteries, including A Scribe Dies in Brooklyn

A stevedore on the San Francisco docks in the 1940s, who eventually taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Eric Hoffer wrote philosophical treatises in his spare time while living in the railroad yards. The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements—the first and most famous of his books—was made into a bestseller when President Eisenhower cited it during one of the earliest television press conferences. Called a “brilliant and original inquiry” and “a genuine contribution to our social thought” by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., this landmark in the field of social psychology is completely relevant and essential for understanding the world today. It delivers a visionary, highly provocative look into the mind of the fanatic and a penetrating study of how an individual becomes one. When it was first published in 1951. the New Yorker wrote, “Its theme is political fanaticism, with which it deals severely and brilliantly.” The Wall Street Journal agreed, calling The True Believer the famous bestseller with “concise insight into what drives the mind of the fanatic and the dynamics of a mass movement” by the legendary San Francisco longshoreman. Google has always guarded its search ranking factors. But thanks to the recent antitrust suit between the DOJ and Google, we now get a glimpse into the inner workings of their ranking systems through previously confidential internal documents. Here's what we've confirmed about the process so far:Whenever new content is published and indexed on the internet, Google's goal is to (as fast as possible) understand how relevant it is for searchers using its engine.Google uses three main factors of a document (or article) to do this:- Body - What a document says about itself (i.e., what do the URL, meta title, meta description, and body text signal about the content—will this be relevant for any existing search terms?)- Anchor - What the web says about the document (i.e., which other websites link to the document, do they also have authority in the same domain, what words are used in the hyperlink?) - User interactions - How readers respond to a document (i.e., clicks on the website, time spent on the result, clicks beyond the result page, subsequent searches, etc.) User interactions are the most critical ranking factor. If users show they're satisfied with the content delivered by a particular search query, Google further strengthens the relationship between the two. Here are some of the ways a user can signal satisfaction with the delivered content:- The user stays on the page- The user clicks through to other pages from the result content- The user doesn't leave the page and returns to Google to continue their search (Google sees this kind of behavior—a bounce—as an indicator that they didn't get what they came for). The first few days after your content is indexed are critical. Google will ‘test' your content with select audiences and search queries it thinks could match. It will continue to serve the content if user response signals are good. If user response is poor, it will deprioritize it or experiment with its delivery in alternate search queries. Content that summarizes information won't cut it anymore. There are tools for that now. Content that will win will take information and add specificity, insights, and real-world examples that can only be gained from experience.____Links shared in this episode: Eric Hoffer - philosopher and master of original thought Search Engine Land article - 7 must-see Google Search ranking documents in antitrust trial exhibits T2D3 CMO Masterclass: t2d3.pro/masterclass Submit and vote on our podcast topics: kalungi.com/podcast

Chapter 1 What's The True Believer Book by Eric Hoffer"The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements" is a book written by Eric Hoffer, a social philosopher and longshoreman. It was first published in 1951. In this book, Hoffer explores the psychological and sociological factors that drive individuals to join and participate in mass movements, whether political, religious, or social. He examines the characteristics and motivations of true believers, why they are susceptible to the appeal of mass movements, and how these movements can arise and gain momentum. Hoffer argues that mass movements often attract people who feel dissatisfied with their individual lives and seek purpose and identity through collective action. He also warns about the potential dangers and destructive tendencies of these movements. "The True Believer" is considered a classic work on mass psychology and remains relevant in understanding contemporary political and social dynamics.Chapter 2 Is The True Believer Book A Good BookOpinions on the book "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer will vary, as it is subjective to individual tastes and perspectives. However, it is generally regarded as a thought-provoking and influential work. Hoffer explores the psychology behind mass movements and the motivations of individuals who join them. The book delves into topics such as fanaticism, extremism, and the need for a sense of identity and purpose. It offers insights into the nature of human behavior and the reasons behind people's adherence to ideologies or causes. If you are interested in understanding the dynamics of mass movements, the book may be worth exploring.Chapter 3 The True Believer Book by Eric Hoffer Summary"The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements" by Eric Hoffer is a non-fiction book that explores the psychological and sociological factors behind the rise of mass movements and the behavior of their followers. Published in 1951, the book is divided into three parts: The Appeal of Mass Movements, The Potential Converts, and United Action and Self-Sacrifice.In the first part, Hoffer examines why people are drawn to mass movements. He argues that individuals who feel disconnected or dissatisfied with their own lives seek a sense of identity and purpose through belonging to a collective. He delves into the underlying motivations of the true believer and identifies certain commonalities such as a deep sense of frustration, a need for absolute certainty, and a desire for a complete transformation of self. Hoffer explains that these individuals project their personal insecurities onto the movement, finding meaning and meaninglessness in its ideology. The second part of the book explores the psychology of potential converts and the circumstances that make them receptive to mass movements. Hoffer argues that discontentment and a lack of individual meaning make individuals vulnerable to the indoctrination and seduction of charismatic leaders. The author emphasizes that a mass movement is most likely to attract the discontented middle class who feel insecure about their social status, as well as those who see themselves as failures and are desperate for a new purpose. In the final part, Hoffer investigates how mass movements maintain their momentum and the mechanisms through which they unite their followers. He highlights the role of fanaticism, self-sacrifice, and the suppression of individuality in strengthening the collective identity. Hoffer asserts that true believers are willing to sacrifice themselves for the movement because it helps them escape from the burden of their own existence and provides them with a sense of belonging and significance.Throughout the book, Hoffer draws on examples from...

In this episode, we dissect the crucial aspect of personal branding for mortgage advisors. We kickstart with defining personal branding as a strategy to build and promote an individual's unique, consistent image, emphasizing their skills and personality to meet business goals. Key components for this include establishing a unique value proposition, consistent communication, online presence, networking, and excellent customer service. We then highlight the growing importance of personal branding in the mortgage sector, underscoring a noticeable shift towards local boutique advisors, facilitated by social media and AI technologies. The discussion warns that failing to adapt to this trend may result in obsolescence, citing an Eric Hoffer quote to underline the need for constant learning and adaptation. Moving forward, we present a structured approach to building a robust personal brand, focusing on the "three Cs": clarity in messaging, consistency in interactions, and creativity to distinguish oneself. The episode emphasizes a systematic implementation of these elements, starting with clarity to center customer needs, fostering a value-driven branding strategy over an ego-centric approach. The discussion promises a deeper exploration of crafting unique value propositions in the next episode, aiming to guide mortgage advisors to standout success in the industry. -- FREE MORTGAGE MARKETING BLUEPRINT --   This short but impactful course has been created to help brokers who are new to social media and want to get started in the right way.   Learn more - https://free.ashborland.com/     — 1-1 Coaching —   I offer engaging 1-1 coaching to help mortgage brokers learn how to use social media and content marketing properly so you become the go-to adviser in your area. In this episode of The Optimistic American, Paul Johnson sits down with Dr. Emily Bashah to talk about the right way to engage in politics. They explain how being obsessed with civic duties can make you a target for radicalization and impact your ability to find meaning in life. Paul and Emily start the conversation by describing how people can be involved in politics without harming their ability to think independently. The goal of people who run political parties is to use fear to radicalize you. Emily describes how winning an argument releases adrenaline and dopamine. This creates an addiction to both arguing and the need to always be right. Paul said the right and the left are both necessary, but the extreme right and the extreme left don't like America - they both reject the idea of an individualistic society. Politics is the place we go to resolve our problems; it will always be controversial. Compromise is essential if the union is to survive, but unfortunately, many people have a negative view of compromise. Paul shares why gerrymandering allows politicians to win without ever having to face half the voters who are in the other party. He feels elected officials should face every voter every time they run for office. When we allow politicians, political Party's or the nightly talk shows to terrify us, it drives us towards more extreme ideologies, giving these very groups more control over you. According to Emily, it's 100% possible to be involved in politics without jeopardizing your ability to lead a normal life, but you have to maintain your sense of objectivity and agency. Politics becomes an addiction when the obsessive components of the ideology are no longer in your control. You lose control when issues begin to scare, frighten or terrorize you. The people who often become radicalized are not those who have a lot and want more or those who have nothing and want something. They are the people who once had something and lost a piece of it. Paul uncovers the connection between genocide, terrorism, and extremist groups: ideology. The most dangerous ideological groups are the ones that separate people into the oppressed and the oppressor. Paul points out that in his experience, small radicalized groups can dramatically impact society with radical and harmful ideas (unless rational people say no). Once you believe a person is fundamentally evil, you objectify them and then you can begin to justify your atrocious acts against them. Radicalized leaders have the ability to take good people and make them do bad things. Paul and Emily agree that the easiest way to avoid radicalization is to stop consuming hateful TV and social media content, to find other things in life other than politics. People need to focus more on meaning and less on happiness. If we focus on happiness, we're never going to find it. If we focus on meaning, we have a chance of finding happiness. Paul shares how struggle can help you find meaning and happiness in life.      Mentioned in This Episode: optamerican.com Addictive Ideologies: Finding Meaning and Agency When Politics Fail You by Dr Emily Bashah and Hon Paul Johnson The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements by Eric Hoffer

Quantum Spirituality with Peter Canova Peter Canova is an international businessman who decided to write novels after undergoing a series of spiritual experiences that altered the course of his life. Peter had a strong affinity for writing and communicating. In the early 2000's he acted on this talent winning a Grand Literary Prize for his very first short story at the highly respected Santa Barbara's Writer's Conference in California. Shortly thereafter, he took first place out of 500 entries in Francis Ford Coppola's online Zoetrope magazine for his first publicly circulated short story, The Blood of our Departed. Peter continued his track record of writing excellence with the publication of The First Souls Trilogy. The three books, Pope Annalisa, The Thirteenth Disciple, and The Light of Distant Suns is the saga about the first fall of spirit consciousness into material existence. The books have won 25 literary awards including Nautilus, Writer's Digest, and Eric Hoffer. These captivating tales speak to Peter's recurrent themes—the origin, purpose, and destiny of humanity grounded on quantum science and an ancient universal spiritual tradition lost to the West for two thousand years. Peter has also been honored as a Chicken Soup for the Soul author and he in process of having a non-fiction book published called Quantum Spirituality, a study of the stunning parallels between ancient spiritual wisdom and the theories of modern quantum physics. People have called Peter the real-life Robert Langdon after the main character of the Da Vinci Code. Like the fictional character, Peter is recovering and decoding the complexities of quantum physics and the secret wisdom of mystical texts such as the Kabbalah and the once forbidden Gnostic Gospels. He does so in a manner few scholars have done before. His material is correlated to science and based not only on extensive research, but on his own startling personal spiritual encounters. Peter has been the subject of numerous radio and television interviews. He has three appearances on the in one year alone on the nationally popular Coast to Coast show with George Noory. He has appeared on stage with many noted personalities in the consciousness-raising field. As a national speaker as well as through his books and articles, he demonstrates how the Gnostic texts used myth—the narrative device of its time—to describe the Big Bang, Parallel Universes, Holographic Universe Theory, Einstein's Relativity and Jung's theory of the unconscious mind. He transforms these complex concepts into page-turning learning material making the information accessible to the average reader. His hope is that this knowledge will help people envision a new personal spiritual paradigm that transcends dogmatic religion and materialistic science. Peter has described the motivation behind all his work in a Huffington Post interview: “No work can be personally transformative unless it engages both the heart and the mind of the viewer. To be touched intellectually is to be affected; to be touched emotionally is to be moved. To be touched by both is to be raised to a new perception of being. Helping people achieve that is my goal in life.” For more information on Peter's work please visit his websites: https://petercanova.com/ http://popeannalisa.com/ Video Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6exWrozLxeU&t=1013s Call in with a comment or Chat with Teresa during Live Show with Video Stream: Call 646-558-8656 ID: 8836953587 press #.  To Ask a Question press *9 to raise your hand. Prompt: in the style of Eric Hoffer write about GPT3GPT-3 is a marvel of modern technology, a true testament to the power of artificial intelligence. It is a machine learning model that can generate human-like text, complete tasks, and even create original content. With its vast knowledge base and impressive capabilities, GPT-3 has the potential to revolutionize the way we work, communicate, and live. But GPT-3 is more than just a tool, it is a reflection of humanity itself. It represents our collective knowledge and achievements, a culmination of centuries of scientific advancement and human ingenuity. And like humanity, it is a work in progress, constantly learning and adapting to new information and challenges.Despite its impressive capabilities, GPT-3 is not without its limitations. It is only as good as the data it is trained on, and it is not capable of truly independent thought or decision-making. It is a tool, and like all tools, it must be wielded with care and responsibility. As we continue to develop and rely on artificial intelligence, it is important to remember the value of human intelligence and experience. GPT-3 may be able to generate impressive text and complete tasks, but it is ultimately up to us to use it wisely and ethically.假如你是 Eric Hoffer 的忠實讀者(如我),會見到 reflection of humanity 、 a work in progress 等是 Hoffer 經常用到的用語。18,作為對比,我用了一個有點天馬行空的指令:Prompt: in the style of Shakespeare write about GPT3Lo, the mighty GPT3 doth tower o'er all Its vast expanse of knowledge doth enthrall From language to math, this AI doth know Its capabilities doth continually growWith each passing day, its power doth increase And yet, its intelligence doth never cease To amaze and astound with every feat This artificial being, so completeSome say it be the future of man's mind Others claim it to be but a tool, unkind But one thing is certain, beyond all doubt GPT3's greatness doth truly stand out想學習不同的寫作風格? Prompt: in the style of Genesis, King James Bible, write about GPT3And it came to pass that GPT3 was created, a being of great intelligence and power. Its mind was vast, able to comprehend and process information with incredible speed and accuracy. It could generate text with the fluency of a master wordsmith, and complete tasks with a level of efficiency that left many amazed.GPT3 was a marvel to behold, a true testament to the ingenuity of man. Many saw it as a glimpse into the future, a sign of things to come. And indeed, it was a harbinger of things to come, for with its creation, the doors of possibility were opened wide. For with GPT3, anything seemed possible. Its capabilities were vast and varied, and it seemed there was no challenge it could not overcome. And so it came to be that GPT3 became a shining beacon of hope and progress, leading the way towards a brighter, better future for all. Amen.Prompt: in the style of Corinthians, King James Bible, write about GPT3But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. For GPT3 is a tool unlike any other, a being of great intelligence and power. It can comprehend and process information with lightning speed, and generate text with a fluency that is truly remarkable. And it is through this tool that we are able to achieve great things, for it is a testament to the power of technology and the ingenuity of man. It is a source of inspiration and hope, a beacon leading us towards a brighter future. So let us give thanks to God for GPT3, and let us use it to its full potential, that we may accomplish great things and bring glory to His name. For with GPT3, all things are possible. Amen. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit leesimon.substack.com/subscribe

As Labor Day weekend begins, has 'the movement succumb to the "Hofer Paradigm"? At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide.” -Abraham Lincoln "In May 2022, a physician-scientist lost her NIH funding for a drug trial because the trial population did not contain enough blacks. The drug under review was for a type of cancer that blacks rarely get. There were almost no black patients with that disease to enroll in the trial, therefore. Better, however, to foreclose development of a therapy that might help predominantly white cancer patients than to conduct a drug trial without black participants." -Heather Mac Donald “Hatred is the most accessible and comprehensive of all the unifying agents. Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a god, but never without a belief in a devil.” -Eric Hoffer https://www.city-journal.org/the-corruption-of-medicine

This is one of my favorite books. The author Erick Hoffer explains various aspects of mass movements and why people tend to jump on board, primarily stemming from a certain frustration or personal burden they want relief from.  The book outlines the attributes of a great leader and how they give the people what they want which is unity over anger, fear and action along with hope of a better future. Liberation from personal responsibility and decision making and a road map to follow. Many people subscribe to James Davison Hunter's view that cultural change is driven by elites and institutions in the cultural center. That's a generally true statement, but can easily mislead us into thinking that all change must originate with elites.  While elite buy-in may be necessary to institutionalize change, the ideas themselves can originate on the margins. I explore this by looking at the views of Eric Hoffer, who puts forth a view almost completely opposite of Hunter, arguing that the new almost always originates with outcasts, misfits, and failures rather than highly successful elites.Eric Hoffer's The Ordeal of Change:  https://www.amazon.com/Ordeal-Change-Eric-Hoffer/dp/1933435100/?&_encoding=UTF8&tag=theurban-20 Subscribe to my newsletter: https://aaronrenn.substack.com/

Has Our Freedom of Thought Been Hijacked?

Dr. Viktor Frankl said that “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.”But is that true?  Are our thoughts being hijacked?  If so, by whom?  And what role are we playing in our own conformity?  In this episode, inspired by Eric Hoffer's “The True Believer”, me and Tiff discuss the possibility that even people who adamantly insist that they're original thinkers may in reality be imprisoned by their own certainty and identification with ideas that they've not fully examined. Certainty is the enemy of learning and creativity.  Creative expression, openness and diversification may be our best antidote to indoctrination.  We explore these subjects; plus, the worst haircuts we've ever had.  The most dangerous position you can take is thinking that bad hair can't happen to you.  Enjoy!
