Hosted by David Cowen | Careers and the Business of Law David Cowen sits down with Mark Allen, Director of Legal Operations and Strategy at Zillow Group - a title that is itself a signal of where the legal ops function is heading. Before Zillow, Mark ran legal operations at Netflix and Activision Blizzard, and has sat on the vendor side at Brightflag and CloudCourt. He's also a newly seated CLOC board member. This conversation covers career advocacy, the vendor-buyer relationship, and why legal ops is quietly becoming one of the best business training grounds in any industry. WHY THIS MATTERS? Legal operations is no longer just a support function - it's becoming the operating engine of the modern legal department. If you're in legal ops today and not thinking about AI, business strategy, and executive influence, this episode is your roadmap. KEY TAKEAWAYS Titles follow impact, not the other way around. Show the work first, then have the conversation. Legal ops is the COO role for a legal department - tech, finance, project management, people, and strategy all in one. Be clear about your intentions with your manager. Doing the work silently is not enough - say it once, clearly. If your leader never sees your value after repeated attempts, it's time to move on. Know your worth. Introverts may actually have an edge - action speaks louder than talk tracks. Vendors: skip the 30-minute sales deck. Show the tool. Buyers know what they need within 15 minutes. Make friends with vendors even when you're not buying. It's a knowledge exchange, not just a sales call. Finance and HR are your fastest path to the executive table internally. Legal ops professionals are being asked to change an operating model that has existed for hundreds of years. An AI-first mindset is no longer optional. Legal ops is essentially a small business degree - creativity, risk-taking, and cross-functional thinking built in. In this episode, I'm talking with Sandy MacDonald, Senior Director and Head of Legal Operations at DocuSign. Sandy is recognised for building an "ahead of the curve" team that treats AI not just as a tool, but as a collaborative digital assistant embedded into the very fabric of their workflow. We talk about the cultural shift of AI adoption and how focusing on individual "pain points". You'll hear perspectives on "human-in-the-loop" governance and why the most successful legal teams are moving away from "AI slop" toward high-value, verified automation that lawyers actually trust.Overcoming the Fear of Replacement: Sandy explains that the primary cultural hurdle is fear; however, she emphasises that AI won't replace lawyers, but lawyers who use AI will replace those who do not.The "Foot in the Door" Strategy: Instead of massive overhauls, the team focuses on "narrow use cases" such as using Gemini to generate images for presentations - to build curiosity and comfort."Human-in-the-Loop" Governance: DocuSign implements a strict governance model where humans remain responsible for validating every piece of AI-generated output.Peer-to-Peer Learning Over Formal Training: Sandy shares why monthly "AI wins" segments in Town Halls are more contagious and effective than top-down mandates or formal one-hour training sessions.Criteria for AI Adoption: How to identify the best starting points for automation by looking for tasks that are high-volume but low-risk, such as processing customer questionnaires. The Evolution of Legal Ops: The shift in the Legal Ops role from being CLM (Contract Lifecycle Management) experts to becoming "AI evangelists" and builders who design their own custom workflows.--------Each week I take what I'm hearing in conversations with legal leaders.I analyze the market and track emerging trends in this AI era.In my newsletter called The Future Lawyer Market Intel for the AI eraI'm focused on:What AI is exposingThe opportunitiesThe blind spotsAnd the shifts shaping the next five years. This is how you see the chessboard before everyone else does:https://hollycope.my.canva.site/thefuturelawyer Hosted on Acast. Everyone's talking about AI for contracts. Not everyone can actually make it work. Brian Powers, Co-Founder and CEO of Markups.ai, has a refreshingly honest take: AI is overhyped, adoption is elusive, and most teams trying to "add AI" to their contract workflows are going to struggle to show ROI. But when it's set up right — trained carefully on a client's specific workflow, integrated into the tools they already use — the results are real. We're talking up to 90% reduction in contract review time. Brian breaks down what makes contracts actually a strong use case for AI (rules-based, pattern-driven, predictable), why plugging into existing tools like Word, email, and your CLM matters more than a shiny standalone product, and what separates AI that sticks from AI that gets abandoned after the pilot. The honest truth? It's not easy. And it's too much work for most teams to figure out alone. This is a conversation worth having before you commit to your next AI vendor.
On this episode, legal operations leader and industry icon Mary O'Carroll joined Brightflag's Anna Richards to discuss the evolution of legal ops roles, the differences between in-house and law firm AI adoption, and the importance of community. Mary also shared practical advice for CLOs looking to build a legal operations function.
Accuracy, Trust, and the Interface Revolution: How AI is Transforming Legal WorkflowsGuest: Mike Anderson, Chief Product Officer, FilevineHost: Seth Earley, CEO at Earley Information SciencePublished on: March 20, 2026In this episode, Seth Earley speaks with Mike Anderson, Chief Product Officer at Filevine, about what it takes to bring AI into one of the most demanding and high-stakes environments in the enterprise - legal operations. They explore why AI will not replace attorneys but will dramatically extend what legal professionals can accomplish, how real-time deposition analysis is transforming courtroom preparation, and why information architecture remains the critical foundation beneath every AI capability. Mike also shares why the interface - not the model - is the biggest unlock AI offers the legal industry.Key Takeaways:AI will not replace attorneys or paralegals - legal services are already severely undersupplied, and AI's role is to extend what existing professionals can accomplish. The billable hour model is evolving, but the bigger opportunity is eliminating non-billable administrative burden so attorneys can focus on higher-order legal thinking.Real-time deposition analysis - live transcription cross-referenced against case files - is one of the most powerful and practical AI applications in legal today.Boolean search cannot be replaced in legal because accountability for document populations requires transparent, auditable logic that external parties can evaluate.Effective AI in legal requires three information retrieval lenses: semantic search, Boolean search, and attribute-based filtering - all three are necessary.Information architecture - defining the is-ness and about-ness of legal objects like matters, contracts, depositions, and clients - remains the foundation for AI to work accurately. The interface is the single biggest unlock AI offers legal professionals - the ability to ask a question in natural language rather than navigate complex click paths changes everything.Insightful Quotes:"The demand for legal services already outpaces supply, and it has for some time. We should be talking about the productivity and extensibility of legal professionals - not obsolescence." - Mike Anderson"If only I had this analysis of the deposition during the deposition. That one customer comment kicked off an entire depositions platform for us." - Mike Anderson"You still need the is-ness and about-ness. The interface changes, but the underlying information architecture is still what makes AI work correctly." - Seth EarleyTune in to discover how legal teams are moving past AI skepticism and building the foundations that make AI accurate, trustworthy, and transformative in practice. This Clock Talk episode features Lyndsay Van Benschoten, Director of Legal Operations at HCA Healthcare, discussing why legal operations transformation should be treated as a marathon rather than a sprint. Drawing on her experience running marathons across every continent, she explains the importance of pacing change, sequencing initiatives, and prioritizing long-term strategy over quick fixes. Lindsay shares how she built a legal operations function from scratch by focusing on relationships, foundational processes, and data-driven decision making. She emphasizes balancing quick wins with long-term infrastructure to build trust and momentum. The conversation highlights that sustainable legal ops leadership requires discipline, resilience, and a human-centered approach.
Legal operations has evolved from a back-office function into a strategic discipline that is reshaping how legal services are delivered. In this conversation, Stephen Seckler speaks with legal operations consultant Jeff Kruse about how technology, process improvement, and artificial intelligence are transforming the way law firms and legal departments work. Jeff shares insights from his career path, from product liability defense lawyer to in-house chief litigation officer and eventually a legal operations consultant. The discussion explores how legal operations helps organizations improve efficiency, manage risk, and adapt to rapid technological change. They also discuss how lawyers considering career transitions can leverage their transferable skills in new roles such as legal operations, consulting, or mediation. The episode concludes with a look at the future of legal operations and why the field is becoming increasingly strategic in law firms and corporate legal departments. Key Takeaways Legal operations has evolved from a back-office function into a strategic discipline AI is accelerating change in legal departments and law firms Process improvements often start with the people doing the day-to-day work "Trickle-up improvementnomics" can improve efficiency across an organization Change management is often the biggest obstacle to operational improvements Lawyers possess transferable skills that apply beyond practicing law Redundancy and backup systems are essential for managing technological risk Legal operations is becoming increasingly strategic within law firms and corporate legal departments Timestamps 00:00 Introduction and why legal operations is now critical 01:03 Jeff Kruse's background and career path 02:20 From law firm partner to in-house litigation leadership 06:16 Jeff's work as a mediator and what it taught him 08:18 Remote and hybrid work in legal teams before the pandemic 10:11 How remote work influences legal operations thinking 11:12 What legal operations actually includes 14:07 AI and the accelerating pace of change in the legal industry 15:44 Can small firms and legal departments keep up with AI? 19:23 Technology consolidation and evaluating legal tech vendors 21:10 What a legal hold is and why it matters 23:00 "Trickle-Up Improvementnomics" and operational efficiency 27:01 Why change management is difficult in legal organizations 34:01 Lessons from the Amazon Web Services outage 37:45 The future of legal operations 40:37 Closing remarks and coaching resources
Legal operations is growing fast, but there's no standardized pathway for professionals entering the field. That's the gap Colin S. McCarthy and Anne Graue are working to close with Our Legal Community (OLC). On this episode, Colin and Anne share why they created OLC—a global community focused on certification, knowledge sharing, and career growth for legal ops professionals. They pair newcomers with experienced coaches who've built legal ops programs from the ground up, creating the certification standards the industry has been missing. We also talked about AI's role in legal teams, the future of in-house legal departments, and what makes OLC different from other networking groups. If you're in legal ops or thinking about starting a legal ops function, this one's worth your time.

Sophia Contreras Schwartz, General Counsel at Nextdoor, discusses her unique journey of building a legal department from the ground up. Sophia discusses how her background as a musician and fitness instructor informs her collaborative leadership style and why Nextdoor identifies as "Middle Tech"—a category of companies often overlooked by one-size-fits-all regulations. The conversation explores the strategic value of hiring Legal Operations early, the specific tech stack that keeps a lean team of eight efficient, and why "versatility and curiosity" are the most important traits for in-house counsel today. Key Takeaways: The First Legal Hire: Companies should consider their first GC when they start generating significant revenue or enter highly regulated spaces. "Middle Tech" Challenges: Nextdoor faces unique regulatory hurdles, like age verification laws, which are often designed for "Big Tech" giants but create significant operational burdens for mid-sized platforms. Force Multipliers: Investing in Legal Ops early allows a small team to scale by focusing on process design and vendor management rather than just manual intake. AI as a Strategist: Using tools like GC.AI doesn't just speed up drafting; it helps in-house lawyers ask better questions of their outside counsel by identifying nuances that general AI might miss. Send us a textThe Legal Bridge: Technology to Trust | S3E8Guest: Darryl Osuch - Unit Manager, Legal Operations at JERA Co., Inc. | Host of The Legal Ops PodcastEpisode Length: 51 minutesEpisode Description"I feel like I'm fighting an education battle."Darryl Osuch identifies what many organizations are missing about AI adoption. Not a technology battle. Not a process battle. An education battle. In this conversation, Darryl shares what he's learning at the intersection of legal operations, AI implementation, and organizational trust. His perspective—both mechanic and driver of AI systems—reveals why the gap between capability and comprehension might be the real bottleneck.Microsoft's research shows 70% of AI transformation involves people, 20% workflows, and only 10% algorithms. Yet many organizations find their resource allocation tells a different story. Darryl brings rare expertise: implementing generative AI at JERA while building frameworks that help people actually trust and adopt it.Key ThemesThe Translation Gap Legal teams are discovering they're not gatekeepers—they're translators between technical capability and human comprehension. When technical concepts get explained but not understood, that's where adoption stalls.Trust as Architecture Trust operates in layers: data, algorithm, company. When one layer doesn't hold, the entire stack can struggle—regardless of technical capability. The Education Battle The real challenge isn't teaching people to use AI tools. It's making complexity accessible without losing truth. Translation capability is becoming strategic, not supplementary.Democratization with Guardrails "Vibe coding" enables people who've never coded to build solutions. The question becomes: How do you create frameworks that enable exploration while maintaining standards? The Soft Skills Advantage When everyone has access to similar AI tools, what creates distinction? Humanity, authenticity, judgment, empathy, wisdom—the entirely human elements.Key Insights from Darryl
