In this episode I speak with Nadia Walji. Nadia is a Certified Yoga Therapist. Nadia works with people one-on-one to pacify any symptoms or conditions that may be arising. Nadia tells us how the practice of Yoga can help people deal with stress, anxiety, sleep, and digestion. She shares her knowledge on some of the tools she uses, such as asana-s (postures) and prānāyāma (breath) practices.Nadia explains the 4 components of the breath and how we can play with those to cause a desired physical, physiological and psychological effect. Nadia also explains the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for fight-or-flight response when a perceived stress is presented. This response inhibits other physiological functions such as digestion. She tells us how posture and breath practices allow us to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which allows for rest, recovery, digestion, and proper sleep. Nadia also has a foundational understanding of Āyurveda, the science of life, and gives insight into this beautiful, ancient Indian system of natural and holistic medicine. She shares how we humans are a microcosm of the macrocosm and are made up of the same elements of the planet – earth, water, fire, air, and ether (space). She explains how each of us has a different makeup of these elements – some people are made up of more of the heavier elements or conversely the lighter elements. By understanding our composition, the symptoms we are experiencing and the season we are in, we can pick foods, herbs and spices that are more appropriate for us.Instagram - @follownadia Hosted on Acast. It's just that sometimes we forget it. So we can help somebody remember and tap into that wisdom.   Manon Bolliger  12:45 is working with the healing force, but you have to exactly. Remind yourself that it's there.   Lisa Sack  I'm seeing it right in front of me, is the connection in that person's body with this fear, this emotion that has inhabited them, this idea that has taken hold, and watching them release that         ABOUT LISA SACK:   Lisa Sack, C-IAYT E-RYT 500, Certified Yoga Therapist and Viniyoga™ Therapist, Āyurvedic Health Counselor, Student-in-Training of Hanna Somatic Education®, Certified Clinical Somatics Exercise Instructor  I was born and raised in NYC and currently live in Brooklyn with my partner of 30 years, our dog and 2 cats. We have 2 children in their mid-twenties, one of whom just graduated from college and is living at home. I had a very peripatetic life before coming to the healing arts–I studied Comparative Literature at Princeton, then studied in England, where I became a Licensiate of the Royal Academy of Music, I worked in theater and production management until my early 30s, then went back to graduate school at Columbia University for an MFA in creative writing. I married at 34 and was a geriatric mom–had my kids at 38 and 40, so my mid-40s were the time of juggling job, at that time, working for a medical marketing firm and parenting. Various factors brought me to my current profession as described below.   Core purpose/passion: What am I NOT passionate about, understand that from the Ayurvedic perspective, I have a great deal of fire in me, and fire is ALL about passion. I am passionate about helping others learn to live with ease, grace, and authenticity. I believe that everyone can change, and that everyone has the knowledge within them to find health, well-being, and contentment. Ehleros-Danlos Syndrome hypermobility, pelvic floor, and chronic pain

Chronic pain, muscle tightness, and fatigue are common complaints for those with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS); an inherited condition that can take over 10 years to diagnose. In this episode, Libby shares why the specialty model of medical care leaves many health concerns undiagnosed. Multi-system conditions, like Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, are hard to diagnose not only because many physicians are not educated about them, but also because people with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome experience vague clusters of symptoms that don't fit within a specific medical specialty, leaving the majority of concerns undiagnosed or left with random and overlapping diagnoses. Libby Hinsley is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Yoga Therapist specializing in the treatment of chronic pain, hypermobility disorders, and yoga-related injuries. She has taught yoga since 2005 and has trained yoga teachers for over a decade. We cover topics like: 2:33 Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, symptomatic hypermobility, hypermobility spectrum disorders, and connective tissue disorders 7:19 Diagnosing Ehlers-Danlos syndrome 10:10 Common symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome 15:05 Impacts on the urogenital tract and muscular tightness 22:30 How to manage chronic pain capabilities with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome 29:10 Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in men 35:00 Yoga for bendy people 40:00 Tips on finding a healthcare professional for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome I love how Libby reminds us why getting a diagnosis is freeing: because when you understand your physiology, you can learn how to approach your life without fear of the “what if.” Ehlers-Danlos syndrome involves a genetic anomaly in collagen and connective-tissue synthesis and structure. This is important to recognize when considering concerns in your pants, because the pelvic region and urogenital system are made up of collagen-rich tissues (like the bladder and pelvic ligaments). With EDS, wherever there's connective tissue, instead of having taught tissues, the tissue sags and creates an opportunity for pelvic floor prolapse, urinary and fecal incontinence, anal fissures, vesicoureteral reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, cryptorchidism, hypogonadism, testicular torsion, and tight foreskin. Because muscle tightness in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a compensatory mechanism for a lack in joint stability and muscle strength, treatment plans start with simultaneously unwinding tension while building a foundation of functional strength. Before training and strengthening muscles, it's important to allow the muscles to relax first, since an already activated and contracted muscle can't contract anymore. How and why to seek a diagnosis for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: On average, it takes 10 years, leaving many suffering for a prolonged time. There's a wide spectrum of symptom severity for people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. For some, the symptoms magnify quickly after surgery, viral infection, or changes in hormones (like during or after pregnancy). There are 14 types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, with Hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) being the most common. 13 of the types are diagnosable with a blood test, while the hypermobile type is diagnosed with a clinical evaluation. For healthcare providers and practitioners, rare conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are a reminder to check assumptions when considering a default diagnosis and to think outside your patterns of diagnosing by really considering all the symptoms in front of you. Refer to the Ehlers-Danlos Society checklist: https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/heds-diagnostic-checklist/ and the signs and symptoms: https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/what-is-eds/ There are many conditions that are commonly diagnosed with those who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The EDS classification provides more information about these conditions https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/2017-eds-classification-non-experts/ RESOURCES: Libby's new book — Yoga for Bendy People: Optimizing the benefits of yoga for hypermobility — explores how people with joint hypermobility can avoid injury and instead, use the tools of yoga to support their thriving. And as you well know, the minute anxiety and stress has ramped up that is going to compromise immunity. So, I always feel like if we could get more people to deal with that, to actually feel when they've got that coursing of hormones through their bodies that are designed to make them run away or fight. That if they could manage that, it would change an awful lot of what's happening in their systems Lisa Sack I think I see it more in those terms, that getting people to really have the tools that they need to calm and soothe themselves will go a long way towards boosting their immunity. Lisa Sack it's why in some ways, I think the ancient practices are so attractive, because they've been around for 5000 years, and there's a huge body and I have respect for science, I have respect for, you know, the efforts to do clinical trials to prove things but, you know, just because you can't measure something doesn't mean it isn't there and isn't true.   ABOUT LISA SACK: Lisa Sack, C-IAYT E-RYT 500, Certified Yoga Therapist and Viniyoga™ Therapist, Āyurvedic Health Counselor, Student-in-Training of Hanna Somatic Education®, Certified Clinical Somatics Exercise Instructor I was born and raised in NYC and currently live in Brooklyn with my partner of 30 years, our dog and 2 cats. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 270: Hypermobility & Yoga with Libby Hinsley   Description: The yoga we see in magazines and online often depict a contortionist style of yoga and it can give people the idea that only flexible people can or should do yoga. But what comes first – are more flexible people drawn to yoga or does yoga make us more flexible? Where does hypermobility come into all of this? Libby Hinsley answers these questions and more.   Libby Hinsley (she/her) is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Certified Yoga Therapist. She has extensive experience with yoga and physical therapy and in her clinical practice, she specializes in treating hypermobility disorgers and yoga-related injuries. Libby also teaches about anatomy in her membership program, Anatomy Bites. Recently diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Libby has a new book coming out on the topic called Yoga for Bendy People.   In this interview, Libby explains more about hypermobility and how it can affect people with this condition. She also shares why people with hypermobility often have tight muscles, how they can benefit from yoga, and some steps they might take to recognize if they have this condition and get it diagnosed. Libby gives yoga teachers some tips on being mindful of their verbal cues and some other things to be aware of with regard to hypermobility in a yoga class.   Key Takeaways: [4:02] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Libby Hinsley. Instead of trying to push this practitioner into this certain type of practice, let's just build a practice that is actually for this person, that's about this person and that really supports that person."   "Momentum is easy.
