She has worked on the lecture circuit throughout NE Ohio educating about the LGBTQ+ community. She has presented at NEOUCOM, University Hospital's Medical School, Social Work and Counseling Conferences to name a few.She is a founding member of Equality Ohio and served as Board Chair in 2007-2008. A general member of HRC for over ten years, she began active volunteering as a member of the Cleveland Gala Committee moving on to be the Gala Co-Chair for two years. As a member of the Cleveland Steering Committee, she held numerous positions including Steering Committee Co-Chair, Federal Club Tri-Chair and Diversity Equity and Inclusion liaison to the national office.She has been an HRC Federal Club speaker for Cleveland, Columbus and St. Louis. Melanie served as an HRC Governor from 2015 to 2017 and has been on the National Board of Directors since 2017. As a National Director, she has co-chaired the National Public Policy Committee and served on the Board Diversity Committee and Board Development Committee. Melanie is a Licensed Independent Social Worker. She has worked extensively throughout Northeast Ohio in mental health counseling, foster care and adoption. Her expertise is in Trauma Treatment, Women's Mental Health Issues, Marriage and Family therapy and LGBTQIA mental health and relationships concerns. Melanie retired in 2015 as the Executive Director of Applewood Centers, Inc. a child and family Mental health agency. Since retirement from Applewood Centers, Inc. she has been working as a private practitioner at Lifestance Health, a national mental health organization. She has been an adjunct professor and a program consultant at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. Melanie has been legally married to her wife Tina for twenty-one years. They've been together for thirty years. Together they have raised Melanie's four biological children, two sons and two daughters and have eight grandchildren. Grandparenting is their favorite and cherished pastime. Don't ask them about their grandchildren unless you have a few hours to spare. Dave is a 50 year old gay trans man who started identifying as openly queer in 1994 and as a trans man in 2001. He started his medical transition in early 2002 in Portland, OR with a few other “litter mates” but, after moving multiple times, lost that sense of connection and community with other trans men. In 2018 he joined Instagram hoping to find connections with other older trans men, and found inspiration, albeit virtually, to seek out more for himself. After being on HRT for 17 years, he finally had top surgery in 2019. Even so, he still suffered from crippling depression and alcoholism. After hitting the proverbial “rock bottom”, Dave made the choice to live in 2020. Sober ever since, Dave is now happily married and lives in his native NE Ohio. Workers and union leaders rallied in Cleveland yesterday to protest federal job cuts. President Donald Trump's administration has slashed jobs across a wide array of government agencies with a stated goal of cutting the federal workforce by as much as 10%. The NEO Voters Voices poll, conducted by the Community Research Institute at Baldwin Wallace University and Survey USA, surveyed 621 registered voters in 20 Northeast Ohio counties, most heavily from Cuyahoga, Stark and Summit counties, from Sept. 26-30. The poll found that the economy is by the far the most important issue for voters heading into next months election. Sixty-four percent are worried about the economy and nearly half are either very or extremely worried. And though Ohio is not a southern border state, the second most important concern you neighbors share: immigration. We will talk about the poll and the rest of the week's news on the "Sound of Ideas" Reporters Roundtable.

Monday marked the one year anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks in Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 people, including women and children, were taken hostage. The Oct. 7 attacks sparked a war Israel continues to wage against Hamas in Gaza. According to the health ministry there, 41,000 people have been killed, many of them women and children, and much of Gaza has been damaged or destroyed. And now the war faces new fronts as in recent weeks, Israel has sent troops into and trades rocket fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon, and shields itself from missiles from Iran, of which Hamas and Hezbollah are proxies. On this episode of the "Sound of Ideas," we will have a conversation, about how the war is impacting communities locally in NE Ohio. We'll hear directly from a panel of local faith and community leaders about this toll and ask if there's been anything over the last year that's given them solace or hope.

Happy Spring!  Spring has arrived and in NE Ohio we got a fresh new coating of snow. It is National Agriculture Week! We love farmers! It was also poultry day this week and we celebrated by incubating 3 new white bantam call ducks. This has been a part time job for Kristin. Danna seems un invested but she loves it! Kristin walks around with a duck in her coat but swears she would never let it sleep in her room. They talk puppies verses babies and ducks.  Kristin's cat got herself into some trouble, she loves the turkey poults (baby turkeys) a little too much.  Richard Simmons….thats a name that takes you back. She has been an Administrative Secretary for the past 19 years. Prior to joining Dublin City Schools, she spent 5 years in Southwestern City Schools in a variety of education support positions such as cook, paraprofessional, clinic aide and also as an attendance secretary. An advocate for education support professionals (ESPs), Cheryl is a member of the Ohio Association of Education Support Professionals (OAESP) where she serves as treasurer and the National Council of Education Support Professionals (NCESP). She is in her third term as president of her local. Cheryl is member of several committees at the local, state, and national levels of the association including an appointment to the NEA Resolutions committee by President Becky Pringle. Cheryl has been a delegate to the OEA and NEA annual Representative Assemblies since 2014. She also graduated from the NEA's Education Support Professional Leadership Institute in 2023. Cheryl was selected from among hundreds of applicants to take part in that yearlong program that brings together 40 ESPs from around the country to focus on developing leadership skills.  Cheryl also has served on the OEA Education Foundation as a member of the board of directors.Julie Newhall, Writer and Publications Editor, Ohio Education Association The daughter of a NE Ohio art teacher and a graphic designer, Julie Newhall grew up with a deep appreciation for art, history, and literature, passions boosted by high school art, Latin, and journalism studies and co-editing the school newspaper. As an undergraduate at the University of Akron, Newhall studied print journalism and design and was a writer for the university's alumni magazine and faculty and staff newspaper. She spent several years as a marketing manager for a magazine publishing company before heading to Northwestern University where she earned a master's degree in journalism. After working as an editor for the University of Chicago, she joined OEA as editor of Ohio Schools Magazine in September 1997, a role that combined her love of education, editing, and publications. In 2015, she was recognized with the George Badner Award for Excellence in Editing and honored as Editor of the Year among NEA state affiliates. Aaron and his wife are both teachers in NE Ohio.  A few years ago, Aaron started getting serious about personal finances.  Through podcasts and reading, Aaron quickly realized the importance of investment fees and started the process of getting out of AXA/Equitable.  Aaron has been married for 8 years and has two young children.  On this episode, we discuss student loan forgiveness, how much he invests, what he invests in, Ohio teacher pensions and more.  Aaron and his wife are projected to make around $150,000 per year on Ohio pensions ALONE when they are 62.
