Welcome to Season 5, Episode 38! How time flies! Its been almost two years since we last spoke to this episode's guest, author Jamie Jo Hoang (S04E05). She's back to talk about her latest book, My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser, which releases on 23 September 2025 (so either pre-order it if you're listening to this episode right when it comes out or order it if you waited a few days). In a follow-up to her amazing novel My Father, the Panda Killer… My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser is told through the eyes of Jane's younger brother Paul and their mother Ngọc Lan. Much like her previous novel, this one is a lyrical story that explores the ripples of war, intergenerational trauma, and discovering a fractured past. In this dual timeline story, Jamie wields her signature style of balancing heartbreaking moments and humor as we get a fuller picture of the central family. That said, although we recommend reading My Father, the Panda Killer, you don't have to. My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser is a self-contained novel. Jamie grew up in Orange County, California, and is also the author of the novel Blue Sun, Yellow Sky. As the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, she feels that it's important to highlight the diverse perspectives and experiences of BIPOC authors and BIPOC books, and we couldn't agree more. My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser is another story of the American experience, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. To find more of Jamie's work, visit her website http://heyjamie.com, her instagram @heyjamiereads, and go out and support her work and other diverse stories. What happens when adults are taught that play is childish, joy is indulgent, and rest must be earned? In this powerful episode of Conversations Spoken in the Dark, Hermence sits down with Tina O'Hoang—researcher, writer, and host of The Courageous Inner Beast podcast—for a raw and reflective conversation about reclaiming joy and challenging the invisible rules that govern how we show up in the world. We're talking about the societal, cultural norms, and personal weight many adults carry when it comes to the concept of play, joy, and simply being allowed to let go. In a world—and within communities—where achievement, responsibility, and quiet strength are often prioritized, play can feel… indulgent. Even selfish. Or completely out of reach. We discuss what gets suppressed, what gets passed down, and what it takes to reclaim joy on your own terms. We're unpacking generational patterns, expectations around seriousness, and the invisible scripts that tell adults who they should be… and who they're not allowed to be.✨ This conversation is for anyone who has ever felt like joy had to be earned or delayed—and is finally ready to rewrite that story. Guest Bio -Tina O'HoangTina O'Hoang is a brilliant researcher, writer, and voice in the space of cultural identity, healing, and reclaiming joy. Her work explores how cultural norms shape Asian women's relationship to play—what gets suppressed, what gets passed down, and what it takes to reclaim joy on your own terms. She is the host of The Courageous Inner Beast podcast, where she creates space for honest, often uncomfortable conversations around mental health, creativity, and breaking free from generational and cultural expectations.

Have you ever wondered what makes Bangladeshi cuisine distinctive in a world where "curry" often becomes the default descriptor for South Asian food? This week, we learn about the vibrant food culture of Bangladesh with Anika Chowdhury, food blogger and contestant from PBS's The Great American Recipe.(01:04) Anika shares her Bangladesh – "a country obsessed with food" – where she grew up surrounded by passionate food conversations and deeply seasonal cooking. She explains how the simple techniques of her culinary heritage make seemingly complex flavors accessible to home cooks everywhere. As proof, she walks us through preparing tomato bhorta, a versatile dish perfect for summer's tomato bounty. Find more Bangladeshi dishes on Anika's blog, Kitchen Gatherings. (23:53) We also welcome Karen Hoang as our newest contributor! This Vietnamese-American transplant shares her journey from rarely dining out as a child of immigrants to becoming one of Pittsburgh's most enthusiastic food explorers. And she has the social media content to prove it. Support the showLiked the episode? We'd love a coffee!

Last week, you learned about Jonathan Hoang, his quiet and structured life, and how he disappeared from his family's home in Arlington, Washington, at the end of March 2025. On the evening of March 30, Jonathan asked to sleep in the downstairs guest bedroom because the sound of the treadmill was bothering him. In hindsight, a few details from that conversation were slightly unusual, but nothing raised alarm. By the next morning, everything had changed. His mother went to wake him for school and found that Jonathan was gone. His iPad and headphones were missing, but his phone and jacket, which he never left home without, were still in the house.Search teams combed the neighborhood and nearby areas. Surveillance footage was gathered from neighbors, but Jonathan was not visible on any of the cameras. No one reported seeing him, and no physical trace of Jonathan was ever found. As time passed, his family began to believe he was not just lost, but that someone may have taken him.Since Jonathan has autism and is considered an endangered missing person, his family expected law enforcement to treat the case with urgency. Instead, they encountered one obstacle after another. They continued searching, but much of the work fell on them and members of the community who offered support without having access to the tools or authority that law enforcement holds. At the center of all this is a disconnect. Jonathan's family is certain he could not have simply walked away and started a new life. He needed daily support and structure. Yet from their perspective, law enforcement seems to have built a narrative that he did exactly that. This week, we will examine what happened after the initial searches ended, the investigation, the community response, and a recent development that has brought new hope, possible sightings of Jonathan in Kirkland, Washington. You can follow the family's search efforts on social media at Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang - Endangered & Missing Person.A $100,000 reward is currently available for information. If you see Jonathan, please call 911. “Learning how to say your truth as yourself is really, really hard to do—especially at first.” In a world increasingly geared toward disposable art, how do we make something that matters? How can we stay true to our inner artist AND work with the algorithm? Is it even worth the compromise? With the release of his four-part album, Triptychs, Court Hoang set out to answer these questions in a way that worked for him. In this episode, Emmeline and Court chat about how streaming has changed music, how creativity doesn't always work on a schedule optimized for consistent content generation, and how making something honest is always better than making something perfect.Court also shares how songwriting can be the opportunity for the coveted life do-over. Twenty-one-year-old Jonathan Hoang disappeared from his home in Arlington, Washington, sometime between the evening of Sunday, March 30, and the early morning hours of Monday, March 31, 2025.On the night of March 30, Jonathan asked his father if he could sleep in the downstairs guest room, saying the sound of the treadmill was bothering him. A short while later, he returned to say he wasn't feeling well and asked to stay home from school the next day. His father suggested waiting to see how he felt in the morning. Around 8 PM, Jonathan told his dad he was heading to bed downstairs. It was a small deviation from routine that was odd, but not alarming. The next morning, Jonathan's mother went to wake him for school and found that Jonathan was gone.Jonathan is on the autism spectrum and lived a quiet, structured life. He spent most of his time at home with his family or at school, where he was enrolled in a transitional program for young adults designed to help them build independent living skills and prepare for work.Jonathan was a creature of habit, and his routines brought him comfort. One of those routines was walking the same path through the neighborhood, always wearing the same jacket with a hood, even on the hottest days. That jacket became a part of how neighbors recognized him. But on the morning his mother discovered he was missing, the jacket was still inside the house. The items missing along with him were his iPad and earbuds. He left behind his phone, his beloved jacket, and every indication of routine. His family called the police immediately. Search and rescue teams canvassed the area, and neighbors helped in the effort. Despite extensive early searches, no sign of Jonathan was ever found. Months have passed since Jonathan disappeared, and his family continues to search and to fight for answers. You can follow the family's search efforts on social media at Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang – Endangered & Missing Person on Facebook. There is currently a $100,000 reward for information. On this episode of the Do Epic Shit Today Podcast, I sit down with Amanda Hoang - a woman who's inspired the hell out of me for years. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Dioramas of the Twin Cities' most beloved landmarksShari Aronson is the creative Co-Director of Z Puppets Rosenschnoz, whose work was featured on Art Hounds last week. Continuing the chain of paying it forward, Shari recommends a “charming project” by Felicia Cooper called “The Agency for Tiny Tourism,” which is on view at In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre. Cooper was selected by the National Humanities Center's 2025 Being Human Festival. She conducted interviews asking people about their favorite Twin Cities landmarks and also led workshops to make dioramas of those landmarks. Visitors to the free exhibit can get a new view of the Twin Cities on Friday evening from 7 to 10 p.m., with additional showings Saturday and Sunday.Shari said: Everybody loves a diorama and peeking into a miniature world. I also am really curious to see which sites people depicted.— Shari AronsonA love of natural stone and kiln-fresh potteryKevin and Pam Bishop of Glenville enjoy the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour that spans southeast Minnesota each spring. Kevin is a custom wood furniture builder, and Pam calls herself an admirer of the arts. The art tour this year includes artists in 22 locations on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.The Bishops each have a favorite artist. Kevin likes the work of Ryan Palmer, whose studio in Lanesboro is called Livingstone Carver.Kevin said: He does very unique work, sculpting natural stone, and we're totally enamored with the outcomes of what stone can be with some correct tooling and knowledge of what you're working with.Pam recommends visiting Lanesboro potter Sue Pariseau.Pam said: She's got a really unique place where she designs and creates her pottery. What I really appreciate is every year she does a special invite so that we can open the kiln as part of the weekend and get to see what's been in the kiln, and have the first choice of what we want to maybe purchase while we're there. But as important as that is just being with other artists.— Kevin and Pam BishopGraffiti, chance and found object artKylie Linh Hoang is the assistant curator at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Last week she attended the standing-room-only opening of graffiti artist SHOCK's gallery show at the Chambers Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The exhibit “Daydreaming at Midnight” runs through May 10. It's a unique space for a show, dressed up with couches and plants for an “anti gallery space” feel, says Hoang, and the work on display derives from a unique artist residency. As Hoang describes it, SHOCK was on his way home from St. Louis when his car broke down in Springfield, Ill., on a holiday weekend, so he set about doing some graffiti work at an abandoned flour mill. The building owners took a liking to his work and invited him to create an art installation in the space.Kylie said: They couldn't pay him, but they did tell him that he could take whatever he wanted from the building, because it was going to be demolished. And so a lot of the work in this show is their assemblages and paintings on found materials from that mill. And so you'll see things that were see things painted on, like doors from the facility, signs from the facility. He also created a number of lamps from materials found at the facility. He taught himself how to wire lamps. It's a very cool assemblage of multimedia work.— Kylie Linh Hoang

Real Estate Investing With Jay Conner, The Private Money Authority
In today's fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves trapped in the endless cycle of the 9 to 5 grind, yearning for a taste of financial freedom and a lifestyle that truly resonates with our personal values. Michael Hoang, a real estate investor from Houston, Texas, once found himself in this very predicament. However, through strategic real estate investments, he managed to escape the daily grind and now dedicates his life to helping others achieve the same. Before diving into real estate, Michael was entrenched in the telecom industry, working as a risk manager with a grueling travel schedule that spanned the U.S., Canada, and even Puerto Rico. As he juggled this demanding routine, he recognized the unsustainable nature of his professional life. Motivated by the desire for stability and a gentle nudge from his wife, he embarked on a quest for financial independence through real estate.Michael's journey in real estate began with "house hacking," a strategy where one purchases a multi-unit property, lives in one unit, and rents out the others. This initial step provided a crucial foundation for his real estate business, allowing him to build capital and experience. However, he soon learned that fear and hesitation had initially held him back from progressing further, despite possessing the necessary knowledge and tools. His breakthrough came when he discovered the power of private money. Traditional financing methods, such as hard money lending, often come with cumbersome paperwork and higher costs. In contrast, private money offered a more flexible and relationship-driven approach, making it easier to secure funding quickly and efficiently. This strategy enabled him to scale his operations significantly faster.Michael credits much of his success to direct-to-seller marketing, emphasizing the importance of finding deals off-market through methods like direct mail. Despite numerous technological advancements, he attests to the timeless efficiency of direct mail in reaching potential sellers and securing profitable deals.Furthermore, Michael utilizes the BRRRR method (Buy, Rehab, Rent, Refinance, Repeat), acquiring distressed properties, renovating them, and refinancing to recoup his initial investment. This method has allowed him to recycle his capital repeatedly, growing his portfolio and wealth without the limitations imposed by traditional financing institutions.Through networking and relationship-building at local meetups and self-directed IRA gatherings, Michael connected with private money lenders who shared his vision. He emphasizes the significance of nurturing these relationships early, suggesting that aspiring investors "dig their well before they are thirsty" to avoid desperation when a lucrative deal arises.Michael's story is not just about financial gain; it's about creating a fulfilling life based on personal values and priorities. He finds joy in knowing that his investments not only provide him with financial freedom but also benefit his private lenders, creating a cycle of opportunity and growth. His journey underscores a critical lesson: in real estate, as in life, relationships are everything. Whether it's connecting with potential sellers or building trust with private lenders, Michael's approach revolves around integrity and mutual benefit, resulting in a win-win scenario for all parties involved. As he continues to expand his real estate ventures and digital presence, Michael remains committed to sharing his knowledge and insights. Through his podcast, "The Be Someone Podcast," and his active participation on social media, he inspires others to break free from their constraints and pursue lives of passion and purpose. In a world where many feel trapped by the constraints of traditional career paths, Michael Hoang's success story offers hope and inspiration. By leveraging creative real estate strategies and cultivating meaningful relation
