Schneider Electric and Motivair showcase how AI is reshaping cooling and power systems inside modern data centres Irish Tech News joined a group of international technology and infrastructure media in Buffalo, New York last week for a Schneider Electric-hosted briefing and site visits focused on the infrastructure emerging around AI computing. The programme included presentations from Schneider Electric engineers and executives, a visit to Motivair, the liquid cooling company acquired by Schneider Electric in 2024, and tours of TeraWulf's expanding AI infrastructure campus in New York State, where Schneider Electric technologies are being deployed as part of the wider infrastructure buildout. A major theme throughout the visit was the speed at which new cooling, power and infrastructure solutions are now being deployed as AI systems dramatically increase computing density inside modern data centres. For years, most data centres relied mainly on air cooling. Chilled air circulated through server halls to remove heat generated by computing equipment. That model worked reasonably well for earlier generations of enterprise computing and cloud infrastructure where heat densities were lower. Companies such as NVIDIA have dramatically increased the processing power packed into these systems, particularly for AI training and inference workloads. The result is that modern AI racks can generate far greater levels of heat than previous generations of computing infrastructure. According to Tuan Hoang, Head of Product Development and Innovation for Schneider Electric's cooling business, traditional air cooling systems are now approaching practical limits at very high rack densities. "Liquid cooling allows us to do that," Hoang told me during the visit. "It has 4,000% more heat capacity than air." At the Motivair facility and later at the TeraWulf site, journalists were shown examples of liquid cooling systems now being deployed beside high-density AI infrastructure. See photo above. Instead of relying entirely on chilled air circulating through server halls, the systems use liquid circulating through cooling units connected into server environments to remove heat more efficiently and closer to the chips themselves. The visual impression is quite different from the public image many people still have of data centres. Large pipework systems, cooling units, power systems and engineering infrastructure increasingly dominate these environments as AI deployments scale. Hoang stressed repeatedly that air cooling is not disappearing entirely. "It is still necessary," he explained, particularly for wider facility environments and supporting infrastructure. What is changing is the balance between air and liquid cooling as AI workloads become denser and more power-intensive. Another major theme during the Buffalo visit was speed. AI infrastructure operators increasingly want facilities operational as quickly as possible because expensive GPU systems only generate returns once deployed and running. That pressure is driving growing interest in modular infrastructure, prefabricated systems and repeatable engineering designs which can be deployed more rapidly than traditional bespoke builds. The scale and pace of construction at the Lake Mariner TeraWulf campus reflected that urgency. One AI-focused facility is already operational while further expansion continues across the wider site. Hoang also discussed the growing challenge of adapting existing data centres for AI workloads rather than building entirely new facilities from scratch. "A lot of customers are trying to retrofit existing data centres," he said during the interview, explaining that many operators are now attempting to adapt infrastructure originally designed for lower-density cloud computing. That pressure is one reason modular cooling systems and repeatable infrastructure designs are becoming increasingly important as AI deployments scale. The discussions also highlighted how AI is be...

Ophthalmologists are realizing that for lamellar corneal transplantation, PDEK (Pre-Descemet's Endothelial Keratoplasty) is better than DMEK, which is better than DSEK. I enjoyed a lecture from Dr Dinh Thi Hoang Anh from Viet Nam and Dr Yury Kalinnikov from Russia where they taught the nuances to ensure success with PDEK. Because it uses Dua's layer, PDEK provides significantly greater structural integrity than the delicate Descemet's membrane used in DMEK. This added toughness simplifies tissue handling and prevents the frequent tearing seen in DMEK. Furthermore, PDEK allows for easier graft centration and unfolding, reducing surgical time while maintaining excellent visual outcomes. We feature a new podcast every week on Sundays and they are uploaded to all major podcast services (click links here: Apple, Google, Spotify) for enjoying as you drive to work or exercise. Changing Higher Ed
AI Can Fill The Vessel. Can Colleges Still Light The Fire?

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2026 37:11

AI in higher education is no longer just a technology issue. The larger question is whether colleges and universities will redesign learning so students develop judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in a world where AI can already generate summaries, essays, and plausible answers on demand. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with France Hoang, Founder and CEO of BoodleBox, about how higher education leaders can think more clearly and more strategically about AI. Hoang explains why AI should be used to augment human capability rather than replace it, and why educators matter even more in a world where AI can get students only part of the way. Drawing on examples from the classroom and across campus operations, Hoang outlines how colleges can move from AI independent to AI enabled and eventually toward AI native models of learning and work. He also explains why colleges need to redesign assignments, rethink pedagogy, and focus more intentionally on the development of domain expertise, reflection, and higher-order thinking. This episode is especially relevant for presidents, provosts, boards, CIOs, and academic leaders who need to make decisions about teaching, student support, workforce preparation, and institutional implementation in an AI-enabled environment. Topics Covered Why AI is forcing higher education to rethink what students should learn when AI can already do much of the visible academic work Why AI often produces a B-minus answer and why domain expertise still matters How the loss of routine entry-level work may weaken the apprenticeship path for graduates Why colleges need to redesign assignments around judgment, application, and reflection How faculty can use simulations, case studies, and human-AI collaboration in the classroom What AI independent, AI enabled, and AI native mean for institutional strategy How AI can support advising, counseling, and career services without replacing human connection Why AI adoption is as much a training, culture, and change-management issue as it is a technology issue Real-World Examples Discussed A marketing course at Point Loma where students build an AI assistant from their own class notes and use it in case studies and simulations A writing program at Pikes Peak State College where students compare their own writing with AI-generated writing and reflect on the differences A reimagined history assignment that uses role-based simulation instead of a traditional reading-and-essay model Institutional examples that show how colleges can move toward more applied, AI-enabled, and AI-native learning environments Three Key Takeaways for Higher Education Leaders Leaders need to know where their institution currently sits on the AI continuum, from AI independent to AI enabled to AI native. AI adoption is as much a training and human resource issue as it is a technology issue, so institutions need to invest in people as much as platforms. A culture of innovation, experimentation, and collaborative implementation will outperform a purely top-down rollout. This episode offers a practical framework for higher education leaders who want to move beyond AI policy and think more seriously about how learning, assessment, student support, and institutional strategy need to change when AI can already do much of the lower-level work. We've arrived at the bitter end. Torie and returning special guests Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang make their final trip to the 50 shades of garbage dump searching for anything of substance in the final installment of this trash film trilogy. Alas, 50 SHADES FREED proves the third time is not the charm.    Sulky sub Anastasia Steele and Dom daddy Christian Grey tie the knot (figuratively, not literally, this time). Their marital bliss is soon interrupted by Ana's former misogynist boss, Jack, and his desire for vengeance against Christian, which still doesn't make sense, as well as a certain unplanned you-know-what that drives a wedge between Ana and Christian, who proves, even after three insufferable movies, that he remains an unhinged, narcissistic a**hole.       What ensues is two hours of blatant misogyny, buttplug pleasures, adventures on the Aspen club scene, painfully asinine car chases, a kidnapping of Rita Ora, a profoundly obnoxious performance of ”Maybe I'm Amazed,” and the confounding absence of a prenup. And through it all, like some absurd monument to early 00s mallboi masculinity, are Christian's cherished pair of Hollister Men's jeans.

Torie and special guests Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang return to the 50 Shades of Grey garbage dump for the second installment in this stinking landfill of a film franchise, 50 SHADES DARKER. Don't bother to bring a shovel. After being broken up for 2.5 seconds, newly deflowered Anastasia Steele and hunky millionaire Dom Christian Grey rekindle their love and get into a full-on relationship. As their "intimacy" grows, Anastasia learns more about Christian's dark past and meets some of the (many) skeletons in his closet. What ensues is two hours of even more sociopathic behavior, somewhat less sexy "S&M" sex scenes, a dash of gun violence, a lavish masked ball fundraiser, a pair of Ben Wa balls, even more Hollister men's jeans, poor restaurant etiquette, workplace sexual harassment, and more. We also meet a less-than-colorful cast of new characters, including Christian's former Mommy Dom "Mrs. Robinson," played by Kim Basinger, Anna's misogynistic new boss, Jack Hyde, and one of Christian's former pets/hostages, Leila.

Welcome back, cinephiles and perverts, and welcome to Season Two of Sex in the Cinema!!! To kick off Season Two, Torie is joined by Angelenos and expert hate-watchers Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang to demolish the cultural phenomenon that was the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. From its humble beginnings in a Twilight fanfiction forum, to the published printed page, all the way to the silver screen, this gross disservice to the kink community turned on the world. For SITC's Season Two Premiere, we're tackling the first installment of the trilogy, 50 SHADES OF GREY. Released in 2015 and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (wife of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, mind you), this film launched the careers of usually good actors Dakota Johnson and Jaimie Dornan.   Mousy brunette super-virgin Anastasia Steele's simple life turns upside down when she meets sexy billionaire (and apparent Never Nude), Christian Grey. Anastasia soon finds out Christian doesn't do relationships, but he does enjoy “various physical pursuits.” Namely, kidnapping women and coercing them into dom/sub relationships of very questionable ethics.   What ensues is two hours of sociopathic behavior, painful lack of chemistry, horrifically awful dialogue, NDAs and contracts, too many needle drops, countless glasses of unconsumed white wine, mostly vanilla sex, an apparent proclivity for Hollister men's jeans, a dusting of taboo slap & tickle, one impressive den of iniquity set, and wayyyyyy too many red flags.    So bust out those handcuffs and settle in for the long haul because, in the words of Christian Grey, there's “no escaping now…”

Welcome to Season 5, Episode 38! How time flies! Its been almost two years since we last spoke to this episode's guest, author Jamie Jo Hoang (S04E05). She's back to talk about her latest book, My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser, which releases on 23 September 2025 (so either pre-order it if you're listening to this episode right when it comes out or order it if you waited a few days).  In a follow-up to her amazing novel My Father, the Panda Killer… My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser is told through the eyes of Jane's younger brother Paul and their mother Ngọc Lan. Much like her previous novel, this one is a lyrical story that explores the ripples of war, intergenerational trauma, and discovering a fractured past. In this dual timeline story, Jamie wields her signature style of balancing heartbreaking moments and humor as we get a fuller picture of the central family. That said, although we recommend reading My Father, the Panda Killer, you don't have to. My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser is a self-contained novel.  Jamie grew up in Orange County, California, and is also the author of the novel Blue Sun, Yellow Sky. As the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, she feels that it's important to highlight the diverse perspectives and experiences of BIPOC authors and BIPOC books, and we couldn't agree more. My Mother, the Mermaid Chaser is another story of the American experience, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Last week, you learned about Jonathan Hoang, his quiet and structured life, and how he disappeared from his family's home in Arlington, Washington, at the end of March 2025. On the evening of March 30, Jonathan asked to sleep in the downstairs guest bedroom because the sound of the treadmill was bothering him. In hindsight, a few details from that conversation were slightly unusual, but nothing raised alarm. By the next morning, everything had changed. His mother went to wake him for school and found that Jonathan was gone. His iPad and headphones were missing, but his phone and jacket, which he never left home without, were still in the house.Search teams combed the neighborhood and nearby areas. Surveillance footage was gathered from neighbors, but Jonathan was not visible on any of the cameras. No one reported seeing him, and no physical trace of Jonathan was ever found. As time passed, his family began to believe he was not just lost, but that someone may have taken him.Since Jonathan has autism and is considered an endangered missing person, his family expected law enforcement to treat the case with urgency. Instead, they encountered one obstacle after another. They continued searching, but much of the work fell on them and members of the community who offered support without having access to the tools or authority that law enforcement holds. At the center of all this is a disconnect. Jonathan's family is certain he could not have simply walked away and started a new life. He needed daily support and structure. Yet from their perspective, law enforcement seems to have built a narrative that he did exactly that. This week, we will examine what happened after the initial searches ended, the investigation, the community response, and a recent development that has brought new hope, possible sightings of Jonathan in Kirkland, Washington. You can follow the family's search efforts on social media at Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang - Endangered & Missing Person.A $100,000 reward is currently available for information. If you see Jonathan, please call 911. Twenty-one-year-old Jonathan Hoang disappeared from his home in Arlington, Washington, sometime between the evening of Sunday, March 30, and the early morning hours of Monday, March 31, 2025.On the night of March 30, Jonathan asked his father if he could sleep in the downstairs guest room, saying the sound of the treadmill was bothering him. A short while later, he returned to say he wasn't feeling well and asked to stay home from school the next day. His father suggested waiting to see how he felt in the morning. Around 8 PM, Jonathan told his dad he was heading to bed downstairs. It was a small deviation from routine that was odd, but not alarming. The next morning, Jonathan's mother went to wake him for school and found that Jonathan was gone.Jonathan is on the autism spectrum and lived a quiet, structured life. He spent most of his time at home with his family or at school, where he was enrolled in a transitional program for young adults designed to help them build independent living skills and prepare for work.Jonathan was a creature of habit, and his routines brought him comfort. One of those routines was walking the same path through the neighborhood, always wearing the same jacket with a hood, even on the hottest days. That jacket became a part of how neighbors recognized him. But on the morning his mother discovered he was missing, the jacket was still inside the house. The items missing along with him were his iPad and earbuds. He left behind his phone, his beloved jacket, and every indication of routine. His family called the police immediately. Search and rescue teams canvassed the area, and neighbors helped in the effort. Despite extensive early searches, no sign of Jonathan was ever found. Months have passed since Jonathan disappeared, and his family continues to search and to fight for answers. You can follow the family's search efforts on social media at Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang – Endangered & Missing Person on Facebook. There is currently a $100,000 reward for information.
