El caso del expresidente hondureño Juan Orlando Hernández ilustra la "contradicción total" en la lucha contra el narcotráfico de Donald Trump, según el analista político Óscar Chacón. Por un lado, indulta y libera a Hernández, condenado por tráfico de drogas y armas en Estados Unidos, mientras que, por otro, no presenta pruebas sobre los presuntos vínculos de Nicolás Maduro con el narcotráfico y, en cambio, lo amenaza con una intervención militar. Hernández obtuvo el indulto de Trump a pesar de estar cumpliendo una condena por tráfico de drogas y armas. "Huele a corrupción", declaró a RFI James Caravallo, ex presidente de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos y profesor en la Universidad de Yale. "Este tipo de indulto es algo bastante excepcional. Casi nunca ocurre con personas sentenciadas por narcotráfico. Hernández acababa de ser condenado a una pena considerable, aparentemente merecida por las pruebas contundentes en su contra. Su hermano también había sido condenado por el mismo delito. El indulto es bastante excepcional y huele a corrupción; huele a una compra, a una transacción, como tantas otras cosas que hace este gobierno", afirmó. Trump: benevolente con Hernández, duro con Maduro  Óscar Chacón, analista político y asesor estratégico de Alianza Américas, también considera que ese indulto representa una contradicción total en la política de lucha contra el narcotráfico que Trump asegura llevar a cabo en el Caribe. "Por un lado, hay toda una narrativa que busca crear la imagen de Maduro como un jefe de Estado que lidera una organización narcoterrorista, sin que hasta el día de hoy se hayan presentado pruebas contundentes de ello. Al mismo tiempo, se libera en Estados Unidos a una persona que fue jefe de Estado en Honduras y sobre la cual existe una cantidad monumental de pruebas que demuestran que, efectivamente, introdujo enormes cantidades de cocaína en Estados Unidos mediante acciones criminales. La incongruencia entre estas dos maneras de proceder deja a cualquier observador con la boca abierta. Todos los argumentos en contra de Maduro se derrumban". Para Caravallo, los poderes del presidente en Estados Unidos, con Trump y la mayoría republicana en el Congreso, parecen hoy sin límites. "Lo que no se puede hacer, porque es ilegal, es conceder un indulto a cambio de algún tipo de favor. No se puede comprar un indulto. Si se comprobara que hubo algún tipo de transacción en ese sentido, Trump podría ser procesado". El argumento de Trump para indultar a Hernández fue que había sido víctima de un montaje de su antecesor, Joe Biden, ignorando la sentencia de 2024 de un juzgado de Nueva York, que, entre otras cosas, afirma que Hernández había convertido Honduras en un narcoestado.

From military invasions, occupations, and annexations of Mexican territories in the 19th century to the post-NAFTA capture of Mexican industries, resources, and labor markets by American companies and investors, US-Mexico relations have always been defined by American imperial domination. “Mexico's economy has been economically dominated and incorporated as a kind of subsidiary or an extension of the US economy,” labor activist and scholar Justin Akers Chacón says, and that relationship of domination “determines the politics of Mexico” to this day.
