Hitting homers, drawing walks, and striking out, these were the only things Chris Carter cared about during 2016 and for tonight, it's all we care about too. Let's take a look back and reminisce on a season that's pretty good as well as interesting. Did you love his moonshots like 14 year old me did? Or did you hate the Golden Sombreros he often went home with?

The story of the 2023 San Francisco Giants offense so far has been pretty simple: strikeouts, walks, and homers. Those are what's known as the "three true outcomes," but will that be a defining characteristic for the SF Giants all season? It's too early to tell, and one thing is certain: they won't keep striking out at this high of a rate.Players like Michael Conforto and Joc Pederson, each striking out about 40% of the time despite career K rates of around 24%, are skewing the numbers and are certain to make more contact as they continue to get at-bats. The Giants also have high-contact players such as Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada on the roster. They're certainly a power and patience team, but don't expect this many strikeouts moving forward.Getting to other mailbag questions:  Is there any chance we see Gary Sanchez on the Major League roster? Do you think the Giants made a mistake letting go of Jason Vosler? When Joey Bart, Mitch Haniger, and Austin Slater return it's almost certain that Matt Beaty goes down. Who are the other two players you project to be removed from the 26-man roster? Jo Adell for Joey Bart? Both guys could probably use a change of scenery. Do you think David Villar is being slept on? Career 125 OPS+ in the majors but it feels like he's not appreciated by a lot of fans.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

With a mediocre-to-bad Colorado Rockies team very likely to lose 90+ games this season, Evan, Skyler, and Mac can at least discuss the positives in a breakout season for Brendan Rodgers at second base and Ryan McMahon improving in the home stretch. Meanwhile, we say bye bye to Bob Stephenson, who has been designated for assignment after a rough 2022 campaign. We wrap things up with another round of "Three True Outcomes," where Skyler presents us with some hypotheticals and we decide if it's a strikeout (no way), a walk (maybe), or a home run (a sure thing). Blake Murphy is joined by Spin Rate podcast's Drew Fairservice to chat about the Red Sox's struggles in their first series post all-star break, if the Blue Jays are settled with their group of fielders, if he believes in Raimel Tapia's bat, and would the Boston become sellers at the trade deadline (7:52). The Athletic's Eno Sarris explains why "Three True Outcomes" (a home run, a walk or a strikeout) are down this season, and what makes Ross Stripling's changeup intriguing (28:13). FanGraphs' Ben Clemens jumps on to discuss the chances for the Cardinals to send prospects for Nationals' Juan Soto, if Marlins' Pablo Lopez will be moved with two years left on his contract, and the market for catchers (50:12). MLB Network's Jon Morosi weighs in on what needs to change in the international draft and free agent pool, why he's high on Soto being traded before the deadline, and where the Blue Jays will pivot in the pitching market (1:13:47). The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

On today's "Farm Friday" show, we're talking Minnesota Twins. It's a system that has a LOT of two distinct types of hitters: Pure contact guys with little power, and Three True Outcomes sluggers who strike out a lot. In A ball, OF Emmanuel Rodriguez (#3) looks like he might be the guy that can do both, while SS Noah Miller is a smooth defender that is looking to build his power. So is 1B Aaron Sabato, in High-A Cedar Rapids. In AA Wichita, Austin Martin and Edouard Julien are both pure hitters with varying levels of power - Julien more than Martin - with defensive questions, while there's a few pitchers here that could end up being dudes with some refinement - Simeon Woods Richardson, Matt Canterino, and local kid Louis Varland. In AAA St. Paul, INF Spencer Steer has made his presence known by adding power to his contact hitter profile, and with his defensive versatility across the infield, is definitely going to get a shot soon. OF Matt Wallner has tons of power but some wing and miss concerns (and reminds me a lot of Braves OF Adam Duvall.) And several of the top guys are already up, with INFs Jose Miranda and Royce Lewis playing regularly at the big league level and Joe Ryan and Josh Winder having varying levels of success at the big league level. Find and follow LockedOn MLB Prospects on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-mlb-prospects/id1525225214Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wzJIf26tGgVbB7rsoKyLDStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-mlb-prospectsFollow along with LockedOn MLB Prospects host Lindsay Crosby as we follow 120+ affiliated teams throughout the 2022 season! The main issue this week for SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, is starting pitching for the playoffs, starting with extreme doubt the White Sox can survive Houston without a healthy Carlos Rodón, who has been by far the best starter versus the Astros this season. Lucas Giolito has also been good, but no one else has even been close to adequate, so fears abound. A look at starters' performances against Houston this season is scary. So is looking at Lance Lynn against them in recent years. That led to discussion of the overuse of starters, especially Rodón — who had pitched only 40 innings in the past two years — by our HOFBP. And that led to the incredible inefficiency of Sox starters, by far the worst in MLB in pitches per inning. Will wants to shut down the starters the rest of the regular season. Leigh thinks that's overkill. Before getting into starting pitching, or even delving into the poor White Sox record in the second half (below .500!) and terrible record in one-run games (HOFBP?), the two talk about what Jason and Stoney have been talking about, since the TV casters have seemingly dropped their concern about the The Three True Outcomes destroying baseball and started stressing how important home runs and strikeouts are. Go figure. And that still left time to bemoan the horrible deadline decisions by Rick Hahn. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On Sharing Sox this week, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, have a very special guest: University of Illinois emeritus professor of physics Alan Nathan, the world's preeminent authority on the physics of baseball. Yep, two people pretending they know what they're talking about are joined by one who really does. The podcast includes explanations of the physics of spin and spin rates, the types of pitches impacted (maybe not what you'd think), how much MLB cracking down on sticky stuff is apt to impact offense, and everything else spin-worthy. Then it's on to the baseball itself, with explanation by Dr. Nathan — who was on the committee that studied the ball and its manufacturing process after MLB became worried about the home-run barrage — of what has and hasn't changed, what does and doesn't vary, and what could be done to make balls more consistent. And finally, we get the opinion of Dr. Nathan (a lifelong Red Sox fan, but nobody's perfect) on what could and should be done to get baseball away from the Three True Outcomes and back to the excitement of balls in play, and catches and throws, and running on the bases and on defense. Trust us, it's the most educational and informative Sharing Sox ever — and still fun. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

He shares the dubious honor of having the lowest official batting average while still qualifying for the batting title when he batted .179 in 1991. He is the only player since 1910 to have a batting average less than .220 in at least 400 at-bats in at least four seasons.Deer held the American League record for strikeouts in a season (186 strikeouts in 1987) until being passed by Jack Cust in 2008, and had at least 140 strikeouts on seven occasions. Deer averaged a strikeout every 2.75 at-bats.Deer has also gained some notoriety among studiers of baseball statistics due to his propensity for the Three True Outcomes (defined as a strikeout, home run, or bases on balls). Because of his ability to hit home runs and take walks and better-than-average fielding ability, he remained a valuable player despite his inability to hit for average, as evidenced by his career 13.7 Wins Above Replacement.Since his playing days, Deer has had a career in drag racing, sprint car racing and has served as a roving hitting instructor for the San Diego Padres minor league system and is currently the owner of Viz-U-Bat. On November 26, 2012, Deer was named the assistant hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs, under his friend Dale Sveum, manager of the Cubs. They were Milwaukee Brewers teammates from 1986–1990. He is also very close friends with former Brewers teammates Chris Bosio (the Cubs pitching coach) and Robin Yount. While with the Brewers, he worked for his father's construction firm.

The Colorado Rockies went 1-2 in their season-opening series in Arizona. The starting pitchers gave out too many free passes. Trevor Story remains a strikeout machine (while Adam Ottavino appears back to being one). And the Rockies scored all but one of their runs in the series via the home run. Casey Light examines how the three true outcomes (walks, strikeouts and home runs) dictated the series and what needs to change against San Diego. That and more are inside this edition of Blake Street Irregulars presented by [Tap XIV](http://www.tapfourteen.com/).

The Infinite Inning is not only about baseball but a state of mind. Steven Goldman, rotating cohosts Jesse Spector, Cliff Corcoran, and David Roth, and occasional guests discuss the game’s present, past, and future with forays outside the foul lines to the culture at large. Expect stats, anecdotes, digressions, explorations of writing and fandom, and more Casey Stengel quotations than you thought possible.
