A popular myth is that when the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, he forced everyone else to embrace the faith - or else face deadly consequences. But this couldn't be further from the truth. It was under Constantine that the very modern-sounding ideas of freedom of religion and “justice for all” were first instituted. These were revolutionary ideals, and they came from a very smart, learned Christian in the Emperor's inner circle.FOR FULL SHOW NOTES - https://undeceptions.com/podcast/against-coercion/(00:00) - - One of history's great persuaders (07:50) - - Persecution and the Crisis of the Third Century (11:25) - - Christianity and Neoplatonism (19:17) - - Lactantius: The Christian Cicero (32:34) - - Lactantius and Constantine (40:50) - - Constantine and religious tolerance (49:30) - - Arguing Christian ethics from pagan philosophy (53:05) - - Freedom of religion and Thomas Jefferson (57:48) - - Lactantius and justice (01:09:09) - - Five Minute Jesus (01:13:38) - - Lactantius' legacy CREDITSUndeceptions is hosted by John Dickson, produced by Kaley Payne and directed by Mark Hadley. Alasdair Belling is a writer-researcher.Siobhan McGuiness is our online librarian. Lyndie Leviston remains John's wonderful assistant.  Santino Dimarco is Chief Finance and Operations Consultant. Peter Kozushko is our North American representative and a point of contact for church pastors interested in engaging with our work here at Undeceptions.  Editing by Richard Hamwi. Our voice actors today were Yannick Lawry and Dakotah Love. Special thanks to our series sponsor Zondervan for making this Undeception possible. Undeceptions is the flagship podcast of Undeceptions.com - letting the truth out. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1278: We've got Steve Greenfield joining the show today as a dealership-born AI platform lands a full cash exit and gears up for U.S. expansion—while China's red-hot EV market hits a margin-crushing price war.A Dubai-born AI platform built by former dealership operators just scored a full cash exit. AlgoDriven has been acquired by San Francisco-based Emergence, delivering a full exit to investors including Oman Technology Fund, 500 Global, Social Capital, and Automotive Ventures.Founded in 2017, AlgoDriven provides AI tools for used-car appraisal, pricing, damage detection, and inquiry management—now used in 1,000+ dealerships across 10 countries. The platform analyzes over $25 billion in used vehicles annually and claims one in three used cars sold in Australia runs through its tech. The acquisition fuels expansion into the U.S. and Latin America while accelerating advanced AI development across valuation, inventory, and customer engagement.CEO Glenn Harwood said, “We built the product we wished we'd had ourselves… bringing data, intelligence, and automation to the used-car lifecycle—helping dealers price better, trade smarter and respond to customers faster.”China's EV juggernaut is hitting turbulence. Even as BYD surpasses Tesla in global EV sales, investors are backing away. A brutal price war, shrinking subsidies, and 400 competing models have turned the world's hottest EV market into what analysts are calling an industry “wartime” shakeout.BYD's stock has fallen roughly 40% from its May peak, as January EV deliveries dropped 33% year-over-year and overall Chinese EV sales slid nearly 20%.Nearly 400 EV models are now for sale in China—more than double 2019 levels—with 100+ launched in just the past two years, fueling margin-crushing competition.Government incentives are fading. China reinstated half of its 10% vehicle purchase tax this year, with the full tax expected to return after 2027.Analysts estimate up to 40% of China's auto production capacity is sitting unused, creating excess supply and accelerating the price spiral known locally as “involution.”Scott Kennedy of CSIS said the industry is entering a “wartime period,” predicting the field will shrink from hundreds of EV makers to just a handful long-term.Today's show is brought to you by ESi-Q. ESi-Q measures employee satisfaction and provides actionable insight into what's driving employee engagement and turnover - before employees leave.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

On this episode of the Hayek Program Podcast, Mario Small delivers a keynote lecture at the 2024 Markets & Society conference on financial institutions and racial inequality—using payday lenders as a lens to understand how place and institutional context shape economic life.Small begins with a deceptively simple question: how often is it easier to reach a payday lender than a traditional bank—and does that vary by neighborhood racial composition? He shows that racial gaps in access and attitudes persist even after accounting for socioeconomic differences, and argues that proximity, convenience, and institutional experience help shape preferences, even as most Americans hold negative views of payday lenders.Together, these insights offer a nuanced account of how neighborhood context and institutional behavior interact to reproduce inequality, challenging simple explanations rooted in individual choice and highlighting the importance of lived experience in economic decision-making.Dr. Mario L. Small is Quetelet Professor of Social Science at Columbia University. A University of Bremen Excellence Chair, and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, and the Sociological Research Association, Small has published award-winning articles and books on urban inequality, personal networks, and the relationship between qualitative and quantitative methods. His books include Villa Victoria: The Transformation of Social Capital in a Boston Barrio, Unanticipated Gains: Origins of Network Inequality in Everyday Life -- both of which received the C. Stable families provide ways for children to socialize and develop emotionally and intrinsically. The larger community benefits from this stability, especially when family connections are strong.” This report provides some results that are a little surprising in terms of Utah's ranking in reading to your children, screentime, eating dinner together, and overall time spent with the family. Back in 2020, John caught up with author and journalist Greg Sheridan to talk about Christianity's struggles in both Australia, and the global West more broadly. However, Greg wasn't so glum on the future of the faith in a post-Christian world. Ahead of an upcoming episode on how the gospel applies to a post-Christian world, we thought now was the time to look back at what Greg had to say.

Mike Ghaffary is a General Partner at Burst Capital, a venture capital firm specializing in early-stage investments in marketplace, software, and AI companies. With an impressive background spanning roles at Canvas Ventures and Social Capital, as well as co-founding Stitcher, he has been instrumental in the growth of companies like Yelp and Eat24, demonstrating his expertise in scaling businesses. Mike has a background in computer science and holds both a JD and MBA from Harvard, and he's invested in high-growth companies like Strava, Superhuman, Faire, and Optimizely. In this episode… The rise of artificial intelligence has sparked widespread anxiety about job displacement and economic upheaval. With rapid advancements outpacing traditional training models and workforce development, many are left asking: Will AI only benefit a select few, or can it create meaningful work opportunities for the broader population? Mike Ghaffary, a seasoned investor and founder in tech and marketplaces, believes AI has enormous potential to generate — not eliminate — jobs, if applied wisely. Drawing on historical parallels from the Industrial Revolution and the early internet era, Mike explains that while disruption is inevitable, new opportunities always emerge. He highlights the importance of equipping workers to collaborate with AI, especially in skilled trades like HVAC and electrical, which are essential to supporting infrastructure like data centers. Mike also cautions founders about the risks of chasing venture-scale growth at all costs, advocating instead for profitability and strategic patience. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Mike Ghaffary, General Partner at Burst Capital, about how AI will fuel job creation and transform Main Street. Mike also shares insights on scaling Eat24, landing a game-changing partnership at TrialPay, and why the future belongs to software-powered small businesses.
