San Francisco Giants utilityman Thairo Estrada is having a breakout season. Not a lot has gone right for the SF Giants in 2022, but Thairo Estrada's season should definitely be counted among the positives. Estrada delivered yet another late, clutch home run in Monday night's Giants win over the Rockies. Estrada is on pace for about 3.0 FanGraphs WAR, qualifying him as a solidly above-average everyday player. The Giants don't have a lot of everyday players to begin with. Looking at the San Francisco Giants' position player mix, there isn't a lot to be excited about. They've been one of the worst units in MLB since the All-Star break. Wilmer Flores is solid and just signed a two-year extension. Joc Pederson is good in his role (defensively-challenged righty masher), but it's unclear whether he'll be back in 2023. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Luis González haven't had great seasons and are non-tender candidates. Mike Yastrzemski has had his second straight disappointing campaign. Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt might not be back next year. Brandon Crawford has had a highly disappointing season following a fourth-place MVP campaign in 2021. David Villar is among the players who could be a big part of the mix in 2023, and watching him the rest of the way is a big deal for the Giants. He had a rough defensive night on Monday, but redeemed himself in a big way with a two-out double in the ninth inning that tied the game. Villar has been about 20% above average by wRC+ this season, hitting for above-average power and walking at a very strong clip. Defense has been an issue at times, and he makes a well-below-average amount of contact, but overall it's not hard to see the ingredients of a quality player. How he plays over the season's final two weeks is very significant to his and the Giants' future. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

San Francisco Giants reliever Zack Littell was out of line. Littell allowed four of the five hitters he faced to reach base, yet somehow he had the nerve to give Giants manager Gabe Kapler a hard time about taking him out of an existing inning. It was absolutely the right decision for Kapler and the Giants to remove Littell in favor of Scott Alexander, a lefty who's been good against Matt Olson, one of the game's best left-handed hitters, with the tying run on third in the eighth. Littell said after the game that he was wrong and that he apologized to the SF Giants' skipper. He was, indeed, out of line, and it was nice to see how the Giants manager handled the situation. He took Littell into the tunnel immediately after returning to the dugout and gave him a good old fashioned talking to. The Giants went on to win the game against the defending champion Atlanta Braves. More details on Wilmer Flores' contract extension with the Giants are discussed. It's actually three years, $16.5 million guaranteed, although the third year is a $3.5 million player option. If Flores declines his option, the Giants hold an $8.5 million club option, which could bring the value of the deal up to 3/$21.5 million. It's a solid deal for both sides. Right-handed flamethrower Cole Waites was added to the roster and could be a big part of the Giants' bullpen moving forward. He didn't make his debut last night, but expect it sometime in this series. Willie Calhoun, acquired earlier in the season for Steven Duggar, was also activated and had an impressive first plate appearance with his childhood team, as he drove in the Giants' first run with a single off the right-field wall. SF Giants, Wilmer Flores agree to two-year, $13M extension

The San Francisco Giants need to get younger and more athletic. Wilmer Flores isn't exactly young and isn't exactly the most athletic. Nevertheless, in his three seasons with the SF Giants, Flores has established himself as one of the Giants' most important players—both on the field and off of it. The Giants and Flores agreed to a two-year, $13M extension on Monday with a mutual option for 2025. It's a great day for the San Francisco Giants. Flores is Mr. Consistent. He's been an above-average bat in every season with the Giants. He has been durable. He can play multiple positions. He's not the greatest defender, but Flores provides value to the Giants in so many ways. He has been above-average against lefties and righties. The Giants can still get younger and more athletic around Flores; this doesn't prevent them from trending in that direction overall. The SF Giants also have quite a few mid-20s players who have had solid-to-strong performances in 2022. Logan Webb, Joey Bart, David Villar, and Camilo Doval had big weekends in Chicago, as the Giants took two out of three from the Cubs. All four are 25 years old, and making an impact to some degree with the Giants this season. Webb looks like very good major league starter. Doval is looking like a possible elite closer. Bart and Villar have had some growing pains along the way, but clearly there is potential in each of them. Another mid-20s player having a strong season is Thairo Estrada, who is young (26) and athletic. In other news, Dominic Leone was released. Leone was set to reach free agency at the end of the season, and he was injured and performing poorly. The Giants are going to give auditions to several new bullpen arms for the rest of the season who might be a part of the future, and clearly Leone was no longer in the SF Giants' future pans. Are the San Francisco Giants actually having fun? More importantly, are fans actually having fun watching them? It's been a frustrating season for the SF Giants, but their play in September has been a breath of fresh air. Lewis Brinson has provided a spark this month, and he had his best game yet on Monday. Brinson slugged two homers against Dodgers pitching, and J.D. Davis, David Villar, and Thairo Estrada also went deep for the Giants. It was just the third time in franchise history that the Giants hit five or more home runs in Dodger Stadium. All four players who homered are under club control for at least two more seasons. Brinson will be first-year arbitration eligible after 2022. Estrada and Villar have five-plus years of club control. J.D. Davis has a couple of arb years remaining. It's why September is such an important month for Giants such as Brinson and Villar. They're auditioning to be a part of next year's team. Villar absolutely destroyed Triple-A this year so it was nice to see him have a good game with the San Francisco Giants. Gabe Kapler took him out for defensive purposes somewhat early in the game, which was somewhat controversial, but the move immediately paid off with a great relay with Bryce Johnson moved to left field as part of the substitution. Wilmer Flores' Sunday walk-off and impending free agency are discussed. Although the Giants need to get younger and more athletic, generally speaking, Flores has been a great Giant and it's hard to see them letting him leave in free agency. There is hopefully mutual interest. Joc Pederson is another guy who is an impending free agent they may bring back. And how about that bad dude Carlos Rodón? This year may have been a disappointment on the whole, but lots of players have had very nice seasons, and a few of them have uncertain futures with the Giants. While it's almost certainly too little too late, it was nice to see the San Francisco Giants play well and show signs of life. Wilmer Flores hit a thrilling walk-off to seal the Giants' sweep of the Phillies. Carlos Rodón was a big bad dude on the mound and racked up his ninth 10+ strikeout game, tying a franchise record. The offense exploded in the series opener, and Alex Cobb continued to be excellent. Cobb, who was so unlucky early in the season, has seen his results-based numbers rebound in a major way. Another win for the underlying numbers... There were several key injury updates over the weekend. SF Giants first baseman Brandon Belt had season-ending knee surgery. Belt is a free agent at the end of the year and it remains to be seen whether he's played his final game in a Giants uniform. Lefty reliever José Álvarez had Tommy John surgery and will miss all of 2023. Álvarez was very good for the Giants last season, but this year was a struggle and it's his last year under contract. Alex Wood has a left shoulder impingement and might be done for the season. He's given up a ton of runs since first dealing with the injury in mid-August. It wasn't a very good second season in San Francisco for Wood, who has an ERA in the 5's. But the underlying metrics suggest he deserved better. Lewis Brinson made his San Francisco Giants debut and collected a couple of hits. The Giants and manager Gabe Kapler used their bench aggressively over the weekend, something they've been able to do more with rosters expanded to 28 from 26. Last year, as a residual effect of the covid-shortened 2020 season, teams had 28-man rosters all season. It was perhaps an underrated reason why the Giants were able to be so successful with pinch hitting, platoons, and matchups. Aaron Judge's impending free agency, and the likelihood of the slugger landing with the Giants, is also discussed. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants added another key prospect from the 2018 Christian Yelich trade. Lewis Brinson, the centerpiece of that deal, was acquired by the Giants yesterday in a trade with the Houston Astros. Brinson was immediately added to the 40-man roster and called up to the major leagues. Now that he's on the 40-man, he is under club control for three seasons via arbitration. If he has a good September and/or Spring Training, he could certainly be on the 2023 team. In other words, Brinson is auditioning for the Giants from here on out. What Giants on expiring deals will be back next year? Farhan Zaidi said on KNBR yesterday that there's interest in bringing back Joc Pederson. If Pederson is retained by the Giants, that would seemingly have a ripple effect in that it could eliminate another platoon. The Giants clearly need more everyday players, and Joc Pederson is a strict platoon player. Wilmer Flores is another Giants player who could/should be brought back, and the most important player might be Carlos Rodón. Who's the most surprising current Giants player who might not be back next year? The answer is probably Mike Yastrzemski or LaMonte Wade Jr. It hasn't been a good year for either Giants lefty, and Wade in particular is probably running out of chances. Both are platoon players, and especially if Joc Pederson is re-signed it might mean at least one of those two will not be on the 2023 roster. Honest assessments of Giants manager Gabe Kapler and president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi are also discussed on today's show. SF Giants lose winnable games in San Diego, must get red hot to stay in race

The San Francisco Giants had a chance to cut their deficit in the wild card race down to 3.5 games, but instead they lead San Diego trailing in the standings by a season-high 7.5 games. The Giants won the first game of the series, and were in position to win the next two, but lost both in crushing fashion. They rallied against Padres closer Josh Hader in the middle game, only to lose on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. They led 4-0 and 7-6 in the finale, but both times the SF Giants came up with big innings, they allowed huge innings in the bottom half. The Giants simply don't do enough to win often enough. At this point, the Giants must get red hot or the hill will be too steep to climb. The opportunity sets up well, at least, since the Giants' next 12 games are against teams below .500. They haven't had an easy times with those teams this year by any means, but it represents one last good opportunity to make up ground. If they tread water or lose ground, the season will be pretty much over, barring some kind of miracle. Joey Bart's ankle injury is discussed, as is the Giants' sloppy defense in the finale on Wednesday. J.D. Davis has been a bright spot since he was acquired at the trade deadline, but he has made a couple of bad throws recently that severely hurt the Giants. Wilmer Flores made one as well. The Giants' defense and bullpen has been a huge reason for their demise this season and it shows no signs of getting any better with this current group of players. It will likely be the Giants' downfall in 2022. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Coming off an amazing 2021 season, the Giants have come back to Earth in 2022, yet still find themselves in the thick of the Wild Card race. The question is, should they add to make a playoff push or take some of their expiring contracts and sell for the future? The Giants could make a deal for an impact player ranging from massive moves like Juan Soto and Pablo Lopez, to acquiring Ian Happ or Brandon Drury. San Francisco can also trade pieces to other contenders like Wilmer Flores and Joc Pederson. Evaluating the SF Giants' uneven first half of 2022

It was certainly an uneven first half for the San Francisco Giants, yet they find themselves just half a game out of a playoff spot with the second half set to begin on Thursday in Los Angeles. The Giants are 12.5 games back in the NL West. The Giants' position players don't really jump off the page, but they've been a solid unit nonetheless. Their team wRC+ of 107 is 10th in MLB and the Giants' baserunning has been a net positive, but defense that has been among the worst in baseball has their overall production more or less league average. If they could improve their defense to go along with a solidly above average offense, they could get back to being one of the upper-third offensive units in baseball. Wilmer Flores, Austin Slater, Thairo Estrada, Mike Yastrzemski, and Joc Pederson all were among the Giants' best contributors. Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt, Evan Longoria, and Tommy La Stella, for various reasons (injury and underperformance) were differing degrees of disappointing in the first half. As were Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade Jr. Starting pitching, as expected, has been the Giants' greatest strength. Logan Webb and Carlos Rodón form a dynamic duo at the top. Alex Wood and Alex Cobb have excellent peripherals but seem to have been hurt by the defense. Jakob Junis was a bright spot before getting injured and should re-join the rotation in the second half. Anthony DeSclafani had a disastrous second year for the Giants, as he was totally ineffective and ultimately succumbed to season-ending ankle surgery. The bullpen has taken a big step back, but Camilo Doval, John Brebbia, and Dom Leone were bright spots. Tyler Rogers was also hurt by the SF Giants' poor first-half defense. The San Francisco Giants needed that one! They trailed the Diamondbacks 3-0 late, and were a couple innings away from yet another series loss to a below-.500 team. This time, it was not to be. Brandon Belt homered. Wilmer Flores hit a game-tying, pinch-hit homer in the eighth. And Brandon Crawford, up in a very similar spot to the one he failed in on Monday, delivered a walk-off single against former Giants closer Mark Melancon. The win was a big morale boost for the SF Giants, who improved to 45-42. The Giants are now just one game back of the NL's final wild card position with the All-Star break and trade deadline fast approaching. Locked On Giants and Locked On D-backs get together to discuss the series and what has gone wrong for the San Francisco Giants in 2022. The Giants' atrocious defense in the first half of the season is discussed, as well as whether the team regrets not doing more in the offseason. They also discuss which 12 pitchers deserved to go to the All-Star game. Originally, Carlos Rodón didn't make it in, which was an egregious snub. Thankfully, he got in as an injury replacement, but his original snubbing is discussed. Does Logan Webb deserve to be there? How do we compare elite relievers vs. very good starters? Carlos Rodón has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball this year. He leads the league in fWAR and FIP and is second in strikeout rate. He put the San Francisco Giants on his back when they absolutely needed it, firing a complete game against the rival Padres on Saturday when a loss would've put the Giants below .500 for the first time all year. Yet somehow, Rodón was not named to the NL All-Star team. It's one of the bigger snubs in recent memory. Rodón absolutely deserves to be there, much more than Joc Pederson actually, but the politics of making sure each team is represented got in his way. It should make Giants fans and baseball fans at large wonder whether All-Star rosters are too small. Either that, or we need to stop making sure each team is represented. How is it good for baseball that Joe Mantiply is an All-Star and Rodón is not? D-backs fans might be happy about that, but that doesn't mean it's right. Clayton Kershaw should be an All-Star, but he hasn't been better than Rodón since he's pitched far fewer innings. Regardless of the All-Star talk, Rodón's complete game was much needed by the Giants. He put the team on his back, and then they carried that momentum into Sunday with a resounding 12-0 win behind an excellent start from Alex Wood. The SF Giants' starting pitching could carry this team in the second half. Logan Webb also deserves to be an All-Star, though his case is more borderline. Wood and Alex Cobb have excellenet peripheral numbers which suggest that they should have better results than they've had to date. Wood showed why on Sunday. The offense also exploded, with Wilmer Flores hitting two homers and several other Giants having good showings at the plate. Hopefully the Giants can carry this into their upcoming series with Arizona and Milwaukee before the All-Star break. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Austin Wynns to the rescue! The San Francisco Giants catcher was a triple shy of the cycle, and his three-run homer in the second inning set the tone for the offense in a thrilling 12-10 win for the SF Giants. Wynns has been a fresh air ever since the Giants acquired him from the Phillies, but he wasn't the only offensive star last night. Mike Yastrzemski had a big bases-loaded double, Joc Pederson added a solo shot, and Wilmer Flores had a two-out, two-strike hit that drove in two runs in the ninth. Those runs proved to be essential, as Giants closer Camilo Doval surrendered a two-run homer to Matt Olson in the bottom of the inning. It wasn't all sunshine and roses, however. Brandon Crawford had an injury scare and came out of the game. He's day-to-day and is getting an MRI, but it looks like he was able to avoid a serious injury. Thairo Estrada made another critical error at a very bad time (although Evan Longoria probably should've made a different throw). And Anthony DeSclafani allowed five runs in three innings in his return from the 60-day injured list. To clear a spot on the major league roster, LHP José Álvarez was placed on the 15-day IL with back tightness. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Are the San Francisco Giants un-clutch? It sure feels that way sometimes, and their woes continued last night as they only got one total run out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the 8th and a second and third, one out situation in the 9th. Their numbers with the bases loaded and no outs are abysmal, but it's a tiny sample of just 14 plate appearances. With the bases loaded and one out, their numbers are excellent. Tommy La Stella popped out in the former situation, and Austin Slater got a hit in the latter. However, Slater's ball was hit so hard that it only scored one run. Wilmer Flores then came up in that same bases loaded, one out scenario and he chased a pitch in the dirt for strike three that would have been ball four and the lead. The league average rate of scoring a runner from third with less than two outs is 52.2%. The SF Giants come in at a below average rate of 49.7%, but it's not too far off the league mark, and several good teams, including the Astros, Braves, and Dodgers are beneath the San Francisco Giants. Logan Webb was great in this game, but the Giants' offense wasn't able to pick him up. Still, the Giants are on a 91-win pace and will have a chance at redemption this evening. Anthony DeSclafani is set to be activated off the 60-day injured list, which will require a corresponding 40-man move (in addition to a 26-man move to add him to the active roster). Wilmer Flores. Evan Longoria. Curt Casali. The San Francsico Giants rode clutch home runs from those three veterans to a resilient 5-4 win in Philadelphia. The offense was sputtering again until Flores' two-run shot tied it. We were still tied in the 9th when Longoria's solo blast gave the SF Giants the lead. And Casali's blast felt the biggest of them all, a two-run bomb that gave the Giants a two-run lead in the 10th. Logan Webb actually allowed three homers himself, but the damage was limited as they were all solo shots. Despite the three home runs allowed, Webb was brilliant in this game. He struck out 10 and walked none. Giants manager Gabe Kapler actually shook Webb's hand and told him he was coming out of the game after the 8th, but Webb talked his way into going back out there. It didn't work out, as Webb immediately allowed a game-tying homer to Kyle Schwarber, but Webb and the team at large appreciated Kapler's willingness to place trust in his young ace pitcher. Dom Leone and Camilo Doval were sharp the rest of the way. Donovan Walton had a particularly rough at-bat in the 10th. He took what should've been ball four, but continued to stand around the plate until the catcher asked if he might've swung. The home plate umpire checked, and the third base umpire said he did. None of that would've happened if Walton had just taken off for first base. He clearly didn't know the count, and it could've easily cost the Giants in a big way. Walton then chased way out of the zone of the next pitch for strike three, failing to advance the free runner placed at second base to begin each extra inning. Thankfully, the next man up Casali lifted a mammoth home run to left that saved the day. Fans have been asking why Walton has been playing over Thairo Estrada, and an explanation is provided on the show. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Joc Pederson has outperformed most of the top free agents San Francisco Giants fans wanted the team to sign. Whether it's Seiya Suzuki, Kris Bryant, or Marcus Semien, Pederson has bested them all. Overall, the SF Giants' offense has been among the best in the game—again. Despite the loss of Buster Posey to retirement and Bryant to the Colorado Rockies, the Giants have a 114 team wRC+, which places them in the top five in all of baseball. The narrative that "everything went right last year" is simply false, so the Giants did have room for improvement with several players. Mike Yastrzemski had a down year, but has rebounded in a major way in 2022. They also dealt with many injuries last year, and unfortunately that has carried over into 2022. But on the whole, the Giants have been able to pick up the slack. Pederson is largely responsible, as his 160 wRC+ is among the best in baseball. Overall, the team has scored 5.19 runs per game, second in MLB behind only the Dodgers. Their weaknesses have actually been pitching and defense, which no one really expected. Sure, they have some questionable defenders like Darin Ruf and Wilmer Flores, but they were able to perform adequately last season. This year, their defense has not been very good and the pitching has under-performed. Much of that looks like bad luck, however, and should correct as the season goes on. If they can pitch better and continue to hit well, they could really take off as the season goes on. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants have won twice as many regular season games as they've lost since the start of the 2021 season. At 120-60, the Giants have the best record in baseball over that span. It's a remarkable achievement for a team that people expected to struggle in both 2021 and 2022. After leading the majors with 107 wins last year, the Giants trail only the Mets in winning percentage so far in 2022. Last night, it was another dazzling performance by Carlos Rodón, who has been nothing short of dominant over his first four starts. He leads the majors in strikeout rate, and has allowed three or fewer hits and one or fewer runs while striking out eight or more in all four of his starts. Jacob deGrom is the only other pitcher in the to do that over any four-game span in the modern era. Wilmer Flores and Austin Slater each hit three-run homers as the SF Giants coasted to a victory and a 13-5 record. It was their third straight win, each in consecutive days and in a different time zone. Zack Littell landed on the injured list prior to the game after testing positive for Covid-19. He joins Mike Yastrzemski on the Covid-IL. Kervin Castro was added to the roster as a replacement. Tonight, Sam Long will take the mound for the injured Anthony DeSclafani. Long has been fantastic, and Jakob Junis is likely to pitch after Long opens. Junis had a spectacular debut with the Giants in a bullpen game on Friday. Finally, the Giants' trade for Kevin Padlo is discussed. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
