You are the Salt of the Earth

Today, we delved into the powerful truth that there is no factoring you out of God's plan. Regardless of your past experiences or actions, God has chosen you to be a significant and important part of His divine design. The Scripture passages from Matthew 4:17-25 and Psalm 32 reinforced this message of inclusion and significance. We explored the idea that, as followers of Christ, we are the salt of the earth. Drawing from The Chosen Series and Jesus' teachings in Mark 1:15, the call to repent and believe in the gospel echoed the theme of actively participating in God's plan for His kingdom. Through Jesus' model, we are encouraged to become who God is calling us to be. The beatitudes, the sermon on the mount, and Jesus' teachings serve as a blueprint for us to understand how to rule with authority in the Kingdom. It's about submitting to the primacy of the King, acknowledging His guidelines, and living according to His principles. We emphasised the importance of putting effort into cultivating the Kingdom. Like making a garden, it requires our active participation and obedience to God's commission. The beatitudes guide us in becoming Kingdom people, and Jesus is building His Kingdom through individuals who submit to His rule. Just as artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster turn junk into art when light is shined on it, we are called to illuminate the lives of those around us. In John 9:5 and Matthew 5, Jesus declares Himself as the light of the world, and now we are called to be the light. When we shine our light of love, hope, mercy, and kindness, we transform what looks like trash into treasure. The beatitudes and the sermon on the mount serve as our guide, illuminating our journey with Kingdom principles. As we apply these principles, the King reigns in our lives, and the Kingdom of God takes root in our communities. Jesus, the light of the world, values each person as chosen, favored, and blessed. Understanding and embodying this revolutionary life principle allows us to manifest the Kingdom and reveal the treasure within each person. You are the salt of the earth, chosen by God to bring flavor and light to the world around you.

Ceri Hand interviews Sue about her creative journey, from her humble beginnings in a non-artistic family to her fascination with LSD and Americana. Sue's unwavering passion and unique approach to art have led her to remarkable success despite facing rejection. She also shares the hilarious story of how Charles Saatchi purchased her work. Sue's authenticity and determination to follow her own path serve as an inspiration for anyone seeking a meaningful creative life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sue Webster's creative journey was not initially encouraged or supported by her family. Despite this, she pursued her passion for art and found her own unique path. LSD played a significant role in expanding Sue's creativity and opening her mind to new possibilities. It instilled in her the confidence to explore different mediums and techniques in her artwork. Sue's collaboration with Tim Noble, her future husband, was born out of their shared interest in pushing the boundaries of art. They experimented with assemblages made from found objects and developed their own DIY aesthetic. Sue's obsession with Americana and customization influenced her artwork, particularly in her use of chrome, flashing lights, and references to 1950s design. She drew inspiration from car shows and the visual impact of hot rods. Moving to Bradford and later Halifax provided Sue with affordable studio spaces and opportunities to exhibit her work. These experiences in the art community helped shape her confidence and determination to push the boundaries of her creativity. BEST MOMENTS "I guess I always considered it to be a burden, having this sort of creative part of you that you have to exercise a demon I guess you have to get some stuff out your system and it was never encouraged when I grew up." "I was very much drawn together on that. And then once we graduated, there was somebody came along, you know, and said, oh, I've got a studio complex up in Bradford in Yorkshire, which I'm opening up and I'm looking, I can give you a free studio if you want to move up." "I just thought, God, I don't want to be one of them people. I just want to leave."  "I was very lucky and had a massive space and then Tim moved down to sculpture not long afterwards and there was no room so he just had a curtain under the stairs." "I just thought, you know what, I'm going to move from painting to sculpture department as soon as I can, and you know, I went first." The resurrection isn't the end of the story: it's the beginning of the revolution. Following Easter, join us for our Sunday gatherings at Midtown as we explore the book of Acts, which follows the earliest years of the church and provides a profound glimpse into the revolutionary nature of the Kingdom of God. This isn't simply the start of a new religious sect that we reflect on appreciatively; it isn't simply another social group we recall and draw inspiration from; it is the reporting of the cosmic drama of God and humanity, together in partnership to bring flourishing to all things, the same cosmic drama we participate in today. This is the remarkable next of the resurrection. Listen as Pastor Clint explores the first miracle of the apostles in the book of Acts, and shows how the Holy Spirit is immediately expanding their vision and growing their expectation for what is possible in God's new Kingdom. The Nicanor gate was "adorned in a costly manner, as having much rich plates of gold and silver.” -Josephus, early Jewish historian 3. “God is forever available, forever being received. Not in pomp or glory or radiance, but in infirmity, foolishness, in nothingness. God chooses what human nature discards and human prudence neglects, out of which he works his wonders and reveals himself to all souls who believe that is where they will find him.” -Jean Pierre de Caussade, "The Sacrament of the Present Moment" 4. “These are peculiar, technical words used of a medical man. The word translated “feet” is only used by Luke and it occurs nowhere else. It indicates his discrimination between the different parts of the human heel. The phrase “ankles” is again a medical phrase to be found nowhere else. The word “jumping up” describes the coming of something suddenly into socket of something that was out of place, an articulation of a joint. This then is a very careful medical description of what happened in connection with this man.” -G. Campbell Morgan 5. “The lordship of God, to which healings witness, restores creation to health. Jesus' healings are not supernatural miracles in a natural world. They are the only truly ‘natural' thing in a world that is unnatural, demonized and wounded.” -Jurgen Moltmann, The Way of Christ 6. “I believe that suffering will be healed and made up for, that all the humiliating absurdity of human contradictions will vanish like a pitiful mirage...that in the world's finale, at the moment of eternal harmony, something so precious will come to pass that it will suffice for all hearts, for the comforting of all resentments, for the atonement of all the crimes of humanity, for all the blood that they've shed.” -Ivan Karamasov, "The Brothers Karamazov" Join us below: Facebook: www.facebook.com/midtownpreschurch Instagram: www.instagram.com/midtown.pres Website: www.midtownpres.org Community Groups: www.midtownpres.org/community-groups Sunday Services: www.midtownpres.org

Guest of this appointment is Horacio Cherniavsky co-founder in 2017 with his work and life partner, Viviana Pozzoli, of Equipo de Arquitectura, a young studio based in Asunción, Paraguay. They are both practicing and teaching architects and, despite the young age, have already developed a number of brilliant works, receiving significant recognitions: selected by the Latin American Architecture Biennial 2019 to exhibit their work in Pamplona, Spain, they won with UHP Synagogue one category of the XXI Pan-American Biennial of Architecture of Quito, Equador, finalist with another work Caja de Tierra, winner of the Frame Awards 2019 as Small Office of the Year, finalists of Architectural Review Emerging Architects Awards 2020, they have been chosen by ArchDaily as one of the Best New Practices of 2021. Their projects, mainly result of winning local and international competitions, have been extensively published by architectural magazines and digital platforms. Criteria for responsibly building and deep respect for the context in its pre-existence inform their conceptual approach and realisations, celebrating an affordable architecture socially accessible and suitable to the harsh conditions of their subtropical climate. Our conversation starts, trying to understand the complex and difficult historical vicissitudes of Paraguay, a country of magical beauty, remained for long time ‘the periphery of the periphery', experiencing poverty and cultural isolation, and we continue deepening the aspirations of a generation of Paraguayan architects, to which Equipo de Arquitectura belongs, driven by desire to preserve, feed and evolve a tradition, aspiring to a social and cultural transformation. A movement based on affordability, self-sufficiency and the creative exploration of a limited palette of materials. Horacio traces back his first experiences, leading him to the specific choices that characterise his practice, explaining what it means to be coherent with the principles embraced in a country undergoing rapid expansion.A quote of Louis Kahn, “The sun did not know how great it was until it hit the side of a building”, and a basic equation, “Dreams + Necessity + Available resources” introduce with originality and poetry Earth Box, their 45sqm workspace, an extremely beautiful presence, a dream materialised around two trees, incorporated, as always, with reverential respect into the development, where light is the element that intensifies and shapes space. The naked walls of the monolithic structure in the colour of red clay are built of rammed earth, a traditional technique, perfectly responding the climate conditions and offering several other advantages above the superb integration with the natural context and the unique atmosphere and textural experience that reserves. Its physicality seems to perfectly satisfy a wish that Juhani Pallasmaa expresses in ‘The Eyes of the Skin', ‘re-sensitize architecture through a sense of materiality, hapticity, texture'. This ‘primordial architecture', as Horacio defines it, allowing to appreciate colours, smells, to stimulate experiences related to our senses, has inspired the creation of the suburban block of the Child Care Center, a place rich of patios and vegetation, as the architect informs, conceived to mould a sensitivity since early childhood, ‘where kids learn by playing and play to learn'. Openness and porosity are characteristics that imbue all the firm's architecture and a constant dialogue between natural and artificial, emphasised by minimising architectural interventions, is a fundamental axiom nurturing daily life in all their residences, as the ‘Patios House' and the 'Intermediate House' well demonstrate. Art, music, philosophy, literature and film are often used by Horacio as references to support and illustrate his interventions, and focusing on KingFish, a small project that is an authentic showcase of different use of material and construction possibilities about recycling, results particularly interesting the reference to the ‘Shadow Sculptures' of the two artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster, assemblages of rubbish, scrap metal that, backlit, project amazing silhouettes and profiles, an extremely original and important message about the beauty that ‘waste' can reserve, if used with creativity and competence. Our conversation concludes reflecting on an inspiring, brilliant work, the Synagogue at the Hebraic Union of Paraguay, realised following an international competition's winning proposal, an impressive transformation of an old existing construction, reached through few precise gestures and few materials expressed in their true nature and most authentic strength.

Tim Noble called 911, desperate for help. He’d just walked into the home he shared with his fiance, Debra Holden, and found her dead on the couch. A gun lay next to her. It appeared she’d died by suicide, and that’s exactly what the medical examiner ruled. Investigators couldn’t find the bullet, though. That seemed a little odd. The blood trail also seemed odd. It was as if she’d been moved after she died. Then Tim showed up at the hospital with a bullet in his leg and an incredibly strange story as to how it got there. Then Kristin tells us about Margaret Rudin, the so-called black widow of Las Vegas. When Margaret and Ron Rudin got married, it was the fifth marriage for both of them. What had been a whirlwind courtship got rocky as soon as they moved in together. Margaret discovered that Ron was having an affair. She also discovered that he’d never renovated the home after his ex-wife died by suicide. Over the years, Margaret says their marriage improved. But when Ron was brutally murdered, Margaret was the prime suspect. And now for a note about our process. Not since the invention of sound cinema have silent movies been so popular, partly due to the unexpected Oscar success of The Artist. This week sees two new films which pay homage to the silent era - Tabu, which has no dialogue in its last half hour and takes its name from a famous F W Murnau drama, and a Spanish adaptation of Snow White which looks like it's been made in the 1920s and not the 21st century.
