Emma Hill: an artist voyage of discovery, documenting memory, finding truth, and expressing the hope of the journey. Here on this podcast, I’m seeking stories of art, sharing creativity, inspiration and hope, of cultural differences and diversity, welcoming inclusivity within art. In the millennium I travelled worldwide, 20 years on I'm re-visiting my journal: Art Culture Vulture, Travels of an Art Seeker. Art at the heart of everything become a universal language, communicating cultural diversity and differences without the barriers of speech and geographical borders. Art united people sharing new, rich perspectives, focusing on identity, community and place while sharing their truthToday I’m continuing these conversations, seeking artist interviews, finding new stories worldwide online, in the wake of the worldwide pandemic, Covid-19. Today art has never been so important, for expression, education and our own mental health and well being.

My diary edit, nostalgically looking back, 22 years to the day - today. Today, I don't seek art, instead I seek Johannesburg's wild animals. I hug a cub and seek South Africa's finest wild animals at The Pilenesberg National Park. So many years later realise how art engages with us, shouting it's plight to save our endangered animals. Art Seeker Stories: A postcard from London UK : My artist journey and travels as an art seeker, a culture vulture, a 20 something trolly dolly. My diary edit, nostalgically looking back, 22 years to the day - today. I take a trip to London to the Royal Acadamy and catch the crest of the wave as it begins to fall. This is Saatchi decade's follow up show to ‘Sensation', Apocolypse, Beauty and Horror in Contemporary Art, ironically before much of it disappears for good, up in smoke. 22 years later, Art in London still shocks, and doesn't. The messages are still the same. There is space for everyone to be included, no matter who you are or what you believe, it's all about expression, if you desire, you carve your path. For now, London is in mourning for Our Queen Elizabeth II, tomorrow she'll be laid to rest. Today on the Art Seeker Stories podcast, I have an Art 2 HeArt with Becky Sheraidah, Founder and CEO of ARTHOUSE Unlimited, a charity that represents a collective of artists living with complex neuro-diverse and physical support needs, including complex epilepsy. The artists' work alongside instructors to create artworks which are developed into designer products for sale. All artwork derives from the skills each artist brings and every contribution holds real value. The charity provides a socially inclusive and safe environment for adults who are often susceptible to social exclusion. ARTHOUSE Unlimited believe that feeling a sense of social inclusion, feeling valued for individual skills and truly purposeful in daily life enhances emotional health and well-being. Becky's aim is for Arthouse Unlimited to be a platform for social change, as so many people living with similar conditions experience social isolation and are undervalued for skills in daily life. The artists have individual and expressive styles when creating artworks and have a unique way of seeing the world, offering an alternative view of society and enhancing other peoples' lives with beautiful artistic offerings. In this episode, Becky and I talk about our emotional connection to the sea and the wonder of nature. We dig deep into intuition and universal energy. Lisa-Marie is a London based painter who explores the connection between nature, people and place. The central purpose of Lisa- Marie's work is to raise awareness of our delicate natural landscapes and the ever-worsening climate crisis. She uses sustainable and eco-conscious methods in her practice to highlight overconsumption and careless consumerism. The physicality of paint making with earth pigments forges a deep-rooted connection to the materials she uses, both from urban and rural settings.Although her paintings are subtle in their appearance, they examine big topics. Climate change, sustainability, ecology and our food systems are the main motivations behind her work. In this episode, we talk about Lisa- Marie's first art Fair experience and what she learned from it. She tells us of her unique painting process and the journey she takes to create it. Today on Art Seeker Stories podcast, I have an Art 2 HeArt with Marit Geraldine Bostad, an abstract artist from Horten, Norway. Her work investigates the themes that are central to her artistic research, the inner psyche, memories and human interaction. Marit Geraldine's a colourist and blends her colours by pouring paint directly onto the canvas using a variety of tools, seldom using the paintbrush - to create diverse, versatile effects with broad expressive strokes. She explores the Nordic Colour tradition in a bold new direction, blending tone to tone pastels with sparks of fluorescent, manifesting her own personal psychic state onto the canvas. Her expression sets the scene for the audience to bring their own meaning to her work. In this episode, we talk about art fairs, the Other Art Fair where I met her and The Affordable Art Fair opening this week, where her art has become the image for their promotion, on busses, posters, underground and magazines. We discuss how an artist residency in New York gave her a valuable insight and self-study of her work and herself. We talk of her stunning exhibition ‘Hope Island' which inspired my original podcast concept and how she has kick started me in to creating, beyond my dreams. Today, I have an Art 2 HeArt with Katie Hallam of The Beautiful Error, an artist photographer and digital explorer currently based in Edinburgh. Her practice explores the connections between new media, technologies and geology and considers the future legacy our digital culture will leave on our Earth. Work is created through a combination of media and techniques including photography and sculpture. Of her artwork Katie says: Technology can create visual problems. It is hard to see, it is difficult to understand the scale of or imagine as a physical infrastructure. It is also problematic to fully understand the environmental issues it can create beyond our personal devices. Technology is hidden in code, buried in tubes, stored in data centers and the ‘cloud'. As a visual artist and photographer, I am exploring ways of how to bring the digital into physical spaces through sculptural objects and site-specific landscapes, visualising how the technological sublime will disguise itself or fossilise within the Earth's strata millions of years in the future. In this episode we chat about the digital footprint and its history that leaves traces and remains suspended in time. What does it look like? Katie's art speaks up and shows us. We talk about her exploration and use of rocks and how the landscape informs her work. And, lurking somewhere in the chaos, you will find signposts; signposts to a community now only ever seen through a blurred lens, enmeshed in hyperbole and ultraviolence; signposts to a country that maybe never existed. In this episode we chat about fake news, the shifts between perspectives, ideas and thoughts constantly evolving and changing in time. From terrorism, social media and Covid and today with Russia at war in Ukraine. Éadaoin's creative journey began with literature and acting. At the age of 17 she tossed a coin to go to Uni or Art college and Uni won. Éadaoin tells me of the early Irish women through history living in a matriarchal society as powerful warrior women, their essence remains in the landscape reflected in the curves of the landscape, within the mountains and coastline. We talk about being shameless in believing in our art and how time and experience allows us to stretch towards the image of pictures that are just out of reach, in the space we can't quite see, in the blind spot, in the corner of our eye, waiting timely show and tell. Today on the Art Seeker Stories Podcast, I have an Art 2 HeArt with Sarah Bird, a contemporary artist and teacher, working in collage , digital and photography, exploring a space between the virtual and real. In this episode we chat about the idea of home and how rooms and belongings hold a residue, keeping memories, stories, and traces of human action over time: the layers of paint and wallpaper, or the marks on a bedsheet or folds of a curtain. Sarah's pictures dance in abstraction and the painterly, in light and dark. Of her work Sarah says:'Windows, doorways, and curtains are common motifs that mark the tension between inside and outside, sanctuary and territory. My work depicts maze-like compositions of liminal spaces, portals and thresholds: the points of boundary and change. The weave of a curtain dissolves into pixels while the view through a window reveals nothing. I use veils of vivid colour, distilled from the distorted pixels themselves, to blend the real with the imagined.' Today on the Art Seeker Stories 13th episode I invite Laura Parker to Art Seeker Island. Of her Art she says: Art is like a strand of her life that has developed as she's grown older (She'll be 70 in 6 months' time!). For many years, art was something she loved and studied, gaining a degree in History of Art & Architecture at 45, but it had never occurred to her to try to create her own work. At fifty, Laura began painting portraits and the human figure in oils. She explored landscape painting, going outside to paint ‘en plein air'. Currently Laura finds greater self expression in working more abstractly, capturing a sense of ‘landscape' that is less representational but more emotional, expressive and authentic to her artistic vision. Laura's use of colour and mark-making is vibrant, creating an energy and vitality to her paintings, offering the viewer a personal interpretation of the world where our individual sensibilities might meet. Laura takes us on wonderful magical journey beneath the sea, The 3 artist artworks Laura takes with her for company on Art seeker Island are;1. Today, on the Art Seeker Stories Podcast 12th Episode I invite Rebecca Tucker to her Artist Residency on Art Seeker Island, to create a concept for her exhibition 'The Shape of Hope.' Rebecca is a Lancashire born/London based painter, whose works are the result of a visual ‘discussion' between abstract and more representational methods of depicting landscape and the natural world. Using colour, texture, line and layers Rebecca is keen to play with the viewers perception of space in her artworks (and what would traditionally constitute a ‘landscape') and then pull that preconceived idea back to the appreciation of what are essentially abstract marks on a two dimensional surface. Rebecca studied Fine Art at Reading University in the 90's, now lives in Greater London and owns an Interior Design company in Wimbledon. Rebecca Art Seeker Island takes us on a wonderful journey through photography , surrealism and an exploration in light where beams of colour create emotion and illusions of floating space. Her Island lives among the trees, it explores all seasons and all terrain, the grass may be greener elsewhere, but on Art Seeker Island, Rebecca has everything all at once. The 3 artist artworks Rebecca takes with her for company on Art seeker Island are;1. By a woman: Vivian Maier http://www.vivianmaier.com/ photographer2. Welcome to Art Seeker Stories, a podcast about Art and creativity. I'm your host, Emma Hill and this is my voyage of discovery. Today I invite Elizabeth Mikellides, a conceptual artist working with both music and art with the goal to discover and illuminate the constructs of music through the visual form of Drawing. By learning piano pieces by Bach, Mozart and Chopin, this created a love of structure, order and layering which Elizabeth represents in her visual practice of Drawing. Elizabeth's Artist residency on art seeker Island takes us on her artist journey as she creates her own vision of hope. She looks for parallels between both music and art and incorporates those findings in her artwork. Her work can therefore be interpreted as a visual score but also visual music. Today, on the Art Seeker Stories Podcast 10th Episode I chat to Scottish artist Cat Coulter, who divides her time between Cellardyke, a fishing village on the Fife coast and north London. Here on her artist residency on Art Seeker Island, she describes her imaginary island, as she creates her own vision of ‘Hope'. Cat's work is a load of old rubbish. Her art practice starts with beach combing. She collects and re-presents found objects, to highlight the impact of our throwaway society on the natural environment. The materials she uses are dictated by whatever the tide brings. Some are natural objects, but most are synthetic items either deliberately discarded or accidentally abandoned on the shore or at sea. Cat uses some of these ugly waste plastics to make cyanotype photograms, making deceptively beautiful but dystopian blue-and-white images, where trash imitates nature. The viewer may not immediately notice that what they are looking at is actually rubbish. Cat invites the viewer to look again, more closely, and reflect on what they see. Cat aims to raise consciousness and awareness of the increase in plastic pollution, particularly since the pandemic and the proliferation of discarded PPE.Each work aims to create, quite literally, a blueprint for change. We take an incredible journey into a hopeful planet where rubbish is but a thought and a memory of what was, encased in a cabinet, frozen in time and history. The 3 artist artworks Cat takes with her for company on Art seeker Island are;1. By a woman: Untitled by Dora Maar (the hand emerging from the seashell)2. Of cultural significance: Zellij tiled mosaics (Elaborate geometric mosaics made in Morocco.3. Free choice: Rembrandt's self-portrait, with two circles.Lufi's Library Book Swap: Borrowing: Natives: Race and Class on the Ruins of Empire by Akala @akalamusic Swapping: Robot & Boo The Beach Cleaning Crew by Leeanne Splatt @castawaycolorYou can find more about Cat and her work here: Website: www.catcoulterartist.com Instagram: @catcoulterartist

Today, on the Art Seeker Stories podcast 8th Episode I'm delighted to chat with London based artist Evelyn Jean, a visual artist whose career began after 12 years in the music industry, where he became increasingly frustrated at the limits of the medium and began practicing visual art as a method for a new way of performance and true expression of his real feelings. In doing this Evelyn seeks to create art that speaks to the soul and to attract a different kind of audience to his work. His work covers many mediums including, painting; filmmaking; literature; music; performance, and installation.Of his work he says,"I am distracted by human behaviour and how we really feel about ourselves underneath the veil. I see life and art being played out like a film script with more control over it than we realise. The ability to rewrite every scene." I met Evelyn briefly in early 2020 just before our first lockdown at a show we were both exhibiting in, ironically called 'Fake News', and virtually more recently at the exhibition, 'The Shape of the New'. Today I have cut Evelyn's episode in two, and this is his part 2 of his artist residency on Art Seeker Island. Wow, we had such great fun and our imaginations ran wild, if not a little bit crazy. This is a real journey weaving in and out of time, into a metropolis melting pot of culture, in and out of reality and the imaginary. We start off with a spark of change, like a lightning bolt, a true awakening- from the music scene switching to film and performance and ultimately to painting. We visit the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and then move on to Lufi's book swap. Evelyn borrows my Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera and he swaps it for Down and Out in London and Paris by George Orwell. If you haven't heard Evelyn's first part one, it is definitely worth a catch up - it's on episode 7, and we talk about Evelyn's 3 Artworks for company on Art Seeker Island. The Juniper Tree by Joan Jonas, Street Scene Chicago Archibald Motley and Atlantic Civilization by Andre Fougeron. Today, on the Art Seeker Stories podcast 4th Episode I'm delighted to chat with artist KV Duong. KV is a London based multi-disciplinary artist who paints and performs. In his work KV explores themes of war migration and cultural assimilation through a re-examination of his parents' experience of the Vietnam war and his own experience of growing up in Canada in a minority immigrant family. War trauma and integration are correlated with the artist's coming out as a gay Asian man. I first came to know KV soon after he curated and produced a group online show, Transient for ArtCan, who we are both members of. Since then we have had many chats on Instagram, discussing each other's paintings and what we see in them. KV has been amazing introducing me to so many new ideas, its hardly surprising he has his own Instagram IGTV series, Art and Ideas. In this show we talk loft spaces and performances, melting pots of cultural influences between Asia and Europe. We discuss the importance of mindset in relation to tennis. KV talks of War, expression and his experiences. He also takes us on an incredible journey on his artist vision of a perfect collaboration that hits all your senses all at once. Today I have the pleasure of talking to Jeremy Morgan who I met online through ArtCan. We both exhibited in a group show, @shapeofthenew_exhibition and we featured together in an IGTV LIVE by the curator, Sukai Eccleston of Casild Art, African Art Finder. After that LIVE, something clicked and all of a sudden the format and idea of this podcast changed. Therefore it seemed perfect for Jeremy to be my second guest to Art Seeker Island. Jeremy is a painter and graphic designer, living and working in Oxford, UK. Dividing his creative output between design and an evolving contemporary artist practice. His design background has influenced the development of his visual language, which seeks to marry dynamism and friction with the beauty and imperfection of the contemporary world. Of his work, Jeremy says: “I'm interested in the potential contradiction of responding to the fast-paced contemporary world with an older, slower technology – paint. But the marks left by my brush on the work's surface which are discernible on close inspection are important signifiers of the possibilities which painting still holds to respond to our present times.” Jeremy's Three Artists Artworks for Company on Art Seeker Island are:By a woman : Fiona Rae @fionarae_studioOf cultural significance : Utagawa HiroshigeA free choice: Christo ClaudeLufi's Library Book Swap:Borrowing: Insects of the Worldly Walter Linsenmaier (bright in.
