Maya Azucena's dynamic 4-octave vocal range explores the passionate grit of Blues, Gospel and Rock, while easily entering the warmth and storytelling of the Singer-Songwriter. Regardless of genre, all of Maya's performances seem to come from a deep place in her heart, affecting the audience in an emotional way. Among several awards for her music and humanitarian outreach, Azucena contributed her voice to a feature performance with Stephen Marley, which earned a Grammy for Best Reggae Album of the Year, and can be heard on her latest 2022 Stephen Marley collaboration, “Celebrating Nina: a Reggae Tribute to Nina Simone,” on Ghetto Youths record label. Maya is a critically acclaimed Brooklyn-native, avid touring artist and songwriter. She has 3 full-length solo albums under her belt, plus numerous digital singles and countless recordings, as both writer and featured performer. Azucena collaborates extensively on stage and recordings with both national and international stars. Her collaborations have included diverse artists such as rock band Brass Against, guitar legend Vernon Reid (Living Colour), jazz greats Marcus Miller, Jason Miles, soulful house producers DJ Spinna, DJ Logic, alt-pop group Fitz and the Tantrums, and Croatian super-star Gibonni. Performing 40+ countries throughout her career, recent concerts include representing America at the International Expo in Dubai 2022; a 17-country tour of Europe 2019; over a dozen Humanitarian tours to countries such as Qatar, Philippines, El Salvador, Myanmar, and Tanzania, as Cultural Ambassador for U.S. State Department; Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles), Essence Fest in New Orleans, Blue Note New York, plus countries like Turkey, Russia, India, Brazil, Croatia, and South Africa. Maya is well known for her humanitarian outlook and projects around The Globe which include special focus on Women's & Youth Empowerment and Domestic/Sexual Violence. Based on a personal commitment to help the world through her talent, most of Azucena's songs are anthems that lend a voice to self-worth, empowerment, overcoming obstacles, and stepping into our “fearless” selves. Maya Azucena is excited to present “I Am Enough,” a 6-song EP recording produced by Timo Ellis, whose “Prince-like” musical diversity brings out the soul of her songwriting and voice. Our guest this episode is a first repeat podcast guest and the musician with the most appearances in Couch Riffs covers videos (I think?), Mr Timo Ellis of Netherlands. In this episode we go pretty deep into what I think most people at least consider and probably worry about but don't really verbalize. Buckle up! I've included some links below to some of the videos Timo brings up in our conversation. We do talk about Netherlands' new album, SEVERANCE, which is arguably their best album yet. Timo is a deeply talented artist and can quite capably express his musical creativity in so many styles and genres, so when you hear the Netherlands it is never a flatlands train track you're traveling on, it is a circuit of wild, well planned trails over a mountain pass. Do go check out Netherlands' music on BandCamp and support independent musicians and artists! Do not expect convention from Timo and Netherlands, however. You can thank me later. If you're enjoying Couch Riffs Podcast or our cover song videos please support us on PATREON. Patreon is what makes Couch Riffs possible and we appreciate your support so much. My overall point here is that while “men“ are obviously not a static category/ monolith, I still regard the phenomenon of sexist domination not only as unequivocally still a “thing“…+ but actually of the foundational cultural malignancies afflicting humanity (and all of non-human life as well, etc) and which IMO, needs to be rooted out, and called out, as vigorously…and as soon as possible!”

He has recorded and toured with such artists as Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Cibo Matto, Joan As Police Woman, and Spacehog, and has variously performed and collaborated with Mark Ronson, John Zorn, The Melvins, Ween, The Lemonheads, Money Mark, and Gibby Haynes. Ellis' extreme versatility has placed him in the company of musical greats of several genres – within his solo work exists an equally vast range of styles. Since the early 2000's, he has composed and recorded more than thirty solo albums under his own name and with his main band, Netherlands. Traversing the realms of rock, punk, metal, soul, lo-fi, folk/ country, electronics, and beyond, Ellis' diverse music is unified by a few constants: impeccable songcraft, blazing technique, quirky experimentalism, and sheer intensity. His solo works have been described with phrases like “an absolute, burning blur of a song” (CMJ), “overridden-in-the-red propulsion” (Noisey), and “gritty, high energy… rambunctious” (BrooklynVegan).

Current events have been a bitch for artists the world over but for Brooklyn rockers, Netherlands, it's afforded the opportunity to double down on creating music. Last week the band released their fifth full length Zombie Techno via frontman Timo Ellis's Records and Tapes Records imprint and it's another in a long line that's incredibly hard to pin down but for those of you living under a rock and completely unaware, their sound is somewhere between sludge, pop, avantmetal, and heavy as heck with amazing vocals. It's catchy, entertaining, unique and carries a powerful message. So, yeah...if you like Netherlands, it's time to get excited and if you don't know, it's time to get acquainted. In conjunction with all that, Ellis took some time to chat with our own Josh Stewart about the making of Zombie Techno, how current events have affected them, staying extremely busy making music, and their latest video. And speaking of busy, we get a hint of their sixth full length! They covered all that and tons more in a terrific conversation, which we're thrilled to bring to you here on The Nine Circles Audio Thing. Jump on in and check it out! David Bader is a sweet man. I met him when he was pulling coffee at the Rough Trade Records coffee stand in Williamsburg and we hit it off immediately. We even flirted with the idea of starting a band along with former Couch Riffs guest Timo Ellis but it didn't get past a rehearsal/jam session. He has the enviable job of meeting, speaking with, and writing about all kinds of musicians and guitar heroes which is something I always thought would be cool but know I wouldn't be great at. But, David is and that's awesome. As usual, we cover lots of ground here and talk a lot about Florida, music, cars, guitars, and much more. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did! Most people think of sobriety as abstinence from drinking. But, for anyone in recovery, whether it be alcohol, cocaine, weed or another substance- there's a depth of meaning- undeniably multi-faceted. Sobriety is a way of being in the world that extends to every aspect of who we are. Part of my journey and reason for choosing this topic- I struggled with anorexia and bulimia while thinking I could hide it from others around me. It was coping mechanism of survival and a full-blown addiction that held me hostage during my teens and twenty's. I'm honored to have Timo Ellis and Jill Rowley join me on today's podcast. Their willingness to be brutally open about their journey through addiction to sobriety is incredibly moving.
