The team behind the Soundcheck podcast series offers their favorite live performances from the WNYC studios this year: including Mexico City-based cellist, producer, and singer Mabe Fratti and her trio; Brazilian composer Amaro Freitas playing the piano's insides; and the soulful mambo of Cuba big band Orquesta Akokán. Plus, Norwegian punk cabaret sextet Kaizers Orchestra, Georgia singer and musician Lizz Wright, and Brooklyn-based Zelenaya with their Eastern European folk songs set to heavy metal (cough...nepotism on that last band...cough.) Also, fiery roots music for everyone by American singer-songwriter Fantastic Negrito, multi-instrumentalist Shabaka's flute-based meditative spiritual jazz, and the saucy multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser of Joan As Police Woman at the piano. There are always some central pillars to a great party playlist - songs that just work. One of those is the Joan As Police Woman song Holy City. The song is always an instant hit at parties, guaranteed to elicit excitable inquiries as to “who is this?”. That instant reaction. The song is a #1 hit in my family - one of those multi-generational family life tracks. But if Holy City is instantly likeable, with a great beat and a strong poppy hook, it's somewhat uncharacteristic of Joan's music, which is mostly the opposite: seductive slow burns that take their time to become loved. It's what Joan herself refers to as the eternal quandary of a life making alternative and original songs in today's music business. “A lot of people are just really busy and they don't have time to figure out what this incredible new music is that might require 10 listens until you're hooked”. Then again, after some time away from Joan's music, it was another of her singles that I was immediately drawn to, the smouldering, unhurried jazzy ballad Full Time Heist, from her new album Lemons, Limes and Orchids. This song, written as a cynical ode to one of life's chancers, is my song of 2024 and enters into the canon of my all time favourite songs. That's two for Joan and makes her increasingly one of my very favourite artists. Joan is the ultimate collaborator - entirely comfortable with creating in the moment no matter who she works with - and some of her collaborators have been bona fide music royalty, including Tony Allen, Rufus Wainwright and Damon Albarn (and also David Sylvian although their recording sessions have yet to see the light of day - something I only discovered after my chat with Joan). But an effective collaborator as she is, Joan makes her own records, literally. Right from the start her 2007 debut Real Life was entirely self-funded, subsequently shopped around to labels that would be willing to take it to market. She had a little bit of help for her first E.P. from - of all places an independent record shop in Derby, England. Indeed, store owner Tom Rose of Reveal Records created his own label just to get Joan's first songs on the market. Tom happens to be Joan's manager to this day. Going back through the catalogue, it is striking just how high the quality of Joan's solo output is, most notably her stunning Sophomore record To Survive (2008), the ultra-cool collaboration with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu The Solution Is Restless (released during the pandemic in 2021). And now Lemons, Limes and Orchids - yet another creative high water mark for an artist whose songs have a classic, timeless quality. The obvious question is how does such an uncompromising, singula artist even survive in today's content-flooded music business?“I practice daily to avoid the whole ‘compare and despair'. Keep the focus on myself and make the best music I possibly can and then I'm a happy person”. If she is happy, we should be too - and lucky to have her making such wonderful music. The singer, songwriter, and multi instrumentalist Joan Wasser, is "not a cop" and has been recording for the past twenty years under the name Joan As Police Woman – a saucy reference to the 1970s cop show that starred Angie Dickinson. She's also collaborated with a huge range of musicians, from the worlds of rock, funk, folk, and experimental music. Her new album, called Lemons, Limes and Orchids, has a mostly nocturnal, understated quality while it celebrates joy and love in the face of extremely difficult times. Joan plays some stripped down versions of some of the songs, including the extraordinary title track, in-studio. Set list: 1. Full-Time Heist 2. Lemons, Limes and Orchids 3. Remember the Voice

TIMO ELLIS is a musician, composer, and producer. He lives and works in New York City, where he was born and raised. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Ellis has appeared on almost 100 albums in total over the past twenty years. He has recorded and toured with such artists as Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Cibo Matto, Joan As Police Woman, and Spacehog, and has variously performed and collaborated with Mark Ronson, John Zorn, The Melvins, Ween, The Lemonheads, Money Mark, and Gibby Haynes. Ellis' extreme versatility has placed him in the company of musical greats of several genres – within his solo work exists an equally vast range of styles. Since the early 2000's, he has composed and recorded more than thirty solo albums under his own name and with his main band, Netherlands. Traversing the realms of rock, punk, metal, soul, lo-fi, folk/ country, electronics, and beyond, Ellis' diverse music is unified by a few constants: impeccable songcraft, blazing technique, quirky experimentalism, and sheer intensity. His solo works have been described with phrases like “an absolute, burning blur of a song” (CMJ), “overridden-in-the-red propulsion” (Noisey), and “gritty, high energy… rambunctious” (BrooklynVegan).

Joan Wasser shares her musical journey from a classically trained violinist to a solo singer, songwriter, and rock star known as Joan As Police Woman.
Joan Wasser is prolific. As a musician, collaborator, and instrumentalist, she's one of those people who needs to create to feel alive. Her career began in bands like The Dambuilders, before she lobbed in on records from Antony & the Johnsons and found her own voice as Joan as Policewoman. And what a voice it is; its warm snarl captures everyone who hears it, and it's the same when she talks. There's something very magnetic about Joan. Which is why I will always be excited to talk music with her, and heroes. From Nina Simone to James Blake to Rufus Wainwright, this is a beautiful conversation about the love of art, from a great artist herself. Tony Allen - ‘Go Back [Ft. Tonight we welcome a guy to take over the playlist who has truly been making his own way both in style and substance in the music world while maintaining his secret identity via encrypted Scooby Doo mask. His meld of heavy beats, lo-fi, and indie rock stylings have gained great attention from some important names over the past several months, and he lined up a great playlist of influences and songs he's personally worked on in the studio. As broadcast January 7, 2022 with plenty of extra Joan & Tone for your podcast spirits. Tonight for our first guest artist selector show of the new year, we couldn't be more thrilled to have welcomed Joan As Police Woman to the show to discuss the creative process that went into her latest album with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu. A surprising one night jam session in Paris in 2019 bloomed into the glimmering, brooding flower that is The Solution Is Restless, one of our favorite albums of the year. Joan talked quite specifically about what moved her to create some of the tunes on the LP, and also how she met the late, great father of afrobeat and kind of "took a chance" asking if he'd like to record with her. Not to be missed for fans of the artist or the album.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderGhost Funk Orchestra – Fuzzy LogicOrions Belte – Cherchez La GhostThe Rebels of Tijuana – Et le blizzard s'estompeLeenalchi – Ultimate PrescriptionPart II (30:36)Robert Glasper – So Beautiful (Live at Capitol Studios)James Booker – Black Minute WaltzJ Dilla – Waves Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – MasqueraderTony Allen – Politely Part III (60:43)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Geometry Of YouTony Allen feat Damon Albarn – Go BackKrystle Warren & The Faculty – If It Wasn't For The LakeBaths – Lovely BloodflowMeshell Ndegeocello – Forget My NameHere We Go Magic – Over The Ocean Part IV (99:55)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My BearingsTony Allen feat Theo Parrish, ESKA, & Andrew Ashong – Day Like This ReworkBridget Kearney – Who Are We KiddingThe Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes For YouConnan Mockasin – Momo'sMadlib – The StrollSly & The Family Stone – Skin I'm In

Joan As Police Woman recorded an ambitious and delicious collaboration with the legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and singer Dave Okumu of The Invisible. In 2019, the trio got together for a session in Paris to improvise, free from form or tempo. You can hear how they clicked on “Perfect Shade of Blue.”
As broadcast November 11, 2021 with plenty of rememberance for you podcast pensioners. Tonight we open marking the first time the original members of The Meters got together for a show in 2000, which was the first time since 1977, and we also talked about the creation and germination of one of their most famous tunes in "Cissy Strut." After that, we put on some tropical vibes on a very dour, cold, & wet day here in Gwangju with some tropical vibes from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band along with an old school Rio favorite from 1975 in Helio Matheus. After that, it's all new tunes for the rest of the first hour with Silk Sonic, Joan As Police Woman, Bobby Oroza, Curtis Harding, and Adrian Quesada with Aaron Frazer being highlights along with Neal Francis & Curtis Harding being out with new LP's as of last Friday. Onwards after our opener, we explore all the big new tunes & albums just out this weekend, with great debut LP's out from Hana Vu & MUNYA, along with Radiohead's "Kid A Mnesia" and a fantastic collab LP from Joan As Police Woman with the late, great Tony Allen and Dave Okumu. As broadcast July 29, 2021 with bonus beats for you podcast boppers. We start tonight remembering Idris Muhammad, a stalwart of the jazz drums and a transformational figure in funk, disco, breaks, and by extension hip-hop & electronica. A proud son of Nawlins, Muhammad was the man behind too many samples to count off the top of even an expert's head. For the remainder of the first hour, we have lots of new cuts to check out with Kendra Morris, Arjuna Oakes, Common & many more to check out, with a couple more historical features of The Time's self-titled album, released this week 40 years ago, and The Roots "Do You Want More?!!!??!" which had been slated for a deluxe reissue last year that was delayed due to the pandemic. Cometh the hour, cometh the Dan after we hit the top of the clock again for our weekly AMPED rock feature, with an absolutely shocking Jonathan Davis cover of the Pet Shop Boys, Lucy Dacus speaking Simlish, and what has to be the tune of the week from The Linda Lindas getting their 2nd spin in 3 days' time.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Idris Muhammad – Crap AppleKendra Morris feat Eraserhood Sound – When We Would RideCommon feat PJ – ImagineJoan As Police Woman feat Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderThe Time – Get It Up Part II (30:03)Bobby Oroza – Breakthru (This Love demo)Arjuna Oakes & Serebii – Even When You're GoneAstrocolor feat Caley Thomas – ParadiseMonster Rally – Tangerine LoungeFlamingosis – AuroraThe Roots feat Cassandra Wilson – Swept AwayThe Root – Distortion To Static Part III (57:30)Turnstile – HolidaySlipknot – DualityCoheed and Cambria – ShouldersPet Shop Boys (with a brief snippet of Jonathan Davis) – It's a SinQuicksand - BrushedDry Cleaning – Bug Eggs Part IV (89:17)The Linda Lindas – Oh!Volbeat – Don't Tread on MeLucy Dacus – Hot and Heavy (Simlish)The Joy Formidable – ChimesLindsey Buckingham – On the Wrong Side
After extensive live and radio performances in and around Switzerland in 2019, Sam Himself enters the next decade with a new body of work. “Slow Drugs,” his upcoming EP due out 5/29, represents a stylistic departure from Sam's earlier, more band-driven recordings. Touring and performing solo have inspired tunes that function equally well with a full band onstage or when Sam's all by himself. In the studio, the five-track EP reunited Josh Werner (bass – Iggy Pop; Bill Laswell) and Parker Kindred (drums – Jeff Buckley; Joan As Police Woman) under the direction of mixer and producer Daniel Schlett (DIIV, The War on Drugs), Sam's longtime creative collaborator, first listener and Second Beatle. The EP's lead single of the same name, “Slow Drugs,” is scheduled for release on 4/3. The song features harmony vocals by Sam's frequent live partner Denitia Odigie, a prolific, Brooklyn-based songwriter and vocalist. All songs were mastered by engineering legend Greg Calbi (Bruce Springsteen; David Bowie).* JC got a chance to catch up with Sam to talk about his background and how he's able to do live shows in his native Switzerland. All this and much more on this week's theFIVE10 Podcast! *taken from publicist's site
