Chances are you've seen the infamous "You wanna play 21?" promo by Jake "The Snake" Roberts from the Heroes of Wrestling pay-per-view. While the promo was not one of Jake's finer moments, it has inspired the topic of this, the twenty-first episode of Music of the Mat Remix. Andrew and returning guest Maura Johnston (Boston Globe, Rolling Stone) play songs that came out the year they turned 21 (2013 and 1996, respectively). Artists featured include Janelle Monáe, Spacehog, Arctic Monkeys, Tegan and Sara, Republica, Ginuwine, Steven Wilson, Bobby Conn, and many more. Episode 042: Grab your slap bracelets and dial-up internet - we're time traveling back to the decade that gave us frosted tips and existential angst! This episode, we're diving deep into the musical equivalent of Tamagotchis: one-hit wonders that defined a generation. Geoff, Russ, and Dave strap on their Jinkos, fire up the boombox, and break down the soundtrack of awkward adolescence with Eve 6, Superdrag, New Radicals, Harvey Danger, Hum, and Spacehog. Bonus: Geoff unleashes a rant that'll make your AOL chatroom look tame, and the guys coin a verb so ridiculous, it might up the ante on language.

Rock and roll still ruled the charts and alternative music was still a thing. We got great albums from Alice in Chains, No Doubt, Mad Season, Oasis, Ozzy, and White Zombie.  SIlverchair, the Foo Fighters, the Deftones, Jewel, Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, and Garbage all released their debut albums.   TLC warned us against chasing Waterfalls. Coolio was living in a gangsta's paradise, and groups also released a handful of songs that we still hear today: Hey Man Nice Shot, Peaches, and those songs by Spacehog, Better Than Ezra, Elastica.  Several members of the Wu Tang Clan released solo albums. R&B kinda sucked with a few exceptions. And there was weird stuff like the Macarena, Scatman John, and Cotton Eye Joe were on the radio. It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a true recording innovator and master of his craft: the amazing Mr. Steve Albini. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace, Steve. This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We're talking about a 90's band that most consider a 1 hit wonder alternative group. SPACEHOG is much more than most give them credit for. They were a unique band that carried the flag more for classic 70's glam and power pop than alternative & grunge. If you are a fan of Bowie, Queen, Iggy Pop, or T.Rex, you owe it to yourself to listen to the SPACEHOG catalog. The countdown has begun, it's 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and baby we're a SPACEHOG!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode covers a band that is clearly in the Forgotten category for most (well, except for that one song). You may think you know them, but you probably don't really know them… Until now. As always, our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Spacehog – “Cruel To Be Kind” from Resident Alien (1995)Spacehog – “The Horror” from The Craft (Music From The Motion Picture) (1996)Spacehog – “Goodbye Violet Race” from The Chinese Album (1998)Spacehog – “This Is America” from The Hogyssey (2001)Spacehog - “Let The Bee Sting You” from B-Side from The Hogyssey (2001)Spacehog – “Remains” from Wreckroom Session (2012)Spacehog – “I Wish You Well” from As It Is On Earth (2013)Spacehog – “Zeroes” from Resident Alien (1995)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

For the first episode of 2024 we're going back almost 30 years to 1995 to completely ignore britpop and talk about much, much better music that was happening at the same time. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - At The Gates, Bjork, Cathedral, Clutch, Dubstar, Faith No More, Fear Factory, Foo Fighters, Fugazi, Garbage, Green Day, Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Low, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Smog, Spacehog, Sparklehorse, Strapping Young Lad, Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub, Therapy?, Tindersticks, Whale, White Zombie, The Wildhearts, & Yo La Tengo. This episode is dedicated to the memory of the legendary music journalist and bloody lovely bloke Neil Kulkarni who sadly and suddenly passed away last week. You may know Neil from the Chart Music Podcast, from his writing for Melody Maker, Kerrang, Vox, The Quietus, Plan B, Metal Hammer, DJ Mag & more, or you may have heard him when he guested on Colin & Ian's other podcast Free With This Months Issue in August last year. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

I don't care about the first time you heard Spacehog, I don't care about the first time you saw Spacehog, I don't care about what you were doing and where you were when you learned Spacehog were done. I realize these thoughts put me at odds with popular sentiment but I simply do not care. Fuck Spacehog. And fuck you — unless we can talk about something else for once. I'm not kidding. The incredible Royston Langdon of Spacehog drops in on Matt for the latest Bonus Track. This time, they're talking about Royston's new album, President Alien, which will be released on July 14.As one might gather from the title, President Alien is a unique return to Spacehog's 1995 debut album, Resident Alien. Nearly 30 years later, Langdon revisits each song from the original album in an acoustic format. He tells Matt how he arrived at the idea of doing the project -- while also sharing some great stories about the roots of the original recordings as well as the early days of Spacehog. There's also some interesting Spacehog news + other topics to dig to. Our thanks to Royston for taking the time to chat. You can pre-order President Alien on CD, vinyl or digital right here.

In this week's episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Michael Bay's relatively timid dystopian science fiction thriller, The Island! Bay trying his best to restrain himself during dialogue scenes, but going full-destructive-madman during the intense action scenes! A stacked cast that includes a playful Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson at the edge of mega stardom, Sean Bean possibly dying again maybe, and a career-best performance from Djimon Hounsou! All that and more in this legitimately compelling (and possibly too prophetic) story that has a fairly shocking narrative twist if you don't already know what the movie is about! In addition, Tim quickly recommends Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions, while Alex gushes about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. What a long, strange trip it has been! Hayley and Brian both saw Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol.3 and are here to discuss the movie and compare it to what was covered in the multiple primer episodes leading up to its release. There were tears, laughs and much, much more. To quote the great "In the Meantime" by Spacehog, which was perfectly used in this movie BTW, we can only imagine what the sentiment was when the Guardians all went their own ways: "That sounds fine, so I'll see ya sometime. Give my love to the future of the humankind..." Aside from Suede and Spacehog, few bands in the 90s embraced the glam sound as wholly as Lowcraft. Except Lowcraft wasn't from the UK, instead claiming Portland, Oregon in the U.S. as their home. The one and only album, 1999's Manticore, is baked with the sound and feel of Marc Bolan and T. Rex, David Bowie, and Mott the Hoople. How exactly? Can certain guitar chords and riffs sound glam? Sure, but it helps if there is a big vocal from the likes of lead singer Nathan Khyber. But like many 90s albums, the extended runtime of the compact disc gives time for songs to go on too long, and what should have been a tight forty-four-minute LP turns ends up a flabby fifty-seven minutes.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - An Inch Away From Heaven 13:32 - Transcendental Meltdown 19:21 - Pornstar 31:15 - One of Us Outro - Happy in My Pants   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. TIMO ELLIS is a musician, composer, and producer. He lives and works in New York City, where he was born and raised. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Ellis has appeared on almost 100 albums in total over the past twenty years. He has recorded and toured with such artists as Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Cibo Matto, Joan As Police Woman, and Spacehog, and has variously performed and collaborated with Mark Ronson, John Zorn, The Melvins, Ween, The Lemonheads, Money Mark, and Gibby Haynes. Ellis' extreme versatility has placed him in the company of musical greats of several genres – within his solo work exists an equally vast range of styles. Since the early 2000's, he has composed and recorded more than thirty solo albums under his own name and with his main band, Netherlands. Traversing the realms of rock, punk, metal, soul, lo-fi, folk/ country, electronics, and beyond, Ellis' diverse music is unified by a few constants: impeccable songcraft, blazing technique, quirky experimentalism, and sheer intensity. His solo works have been described with phrases like “an absolute, burning blur of a song” (CMJ), “overridden-in-the-red propulsion” (Noisey), and “gritty, high energy… rambunctious” (BrooklynVegan).
