It was an honor and a privilege to meet Marilee Rose and chew the life-story fat with her a couple of weeks ago.She is a daughter and a sibling and a mother and a fiancee. She's a years-long entrepreneur, a lover of planning and travel, and a gangster in her own right. She's also my guest for Episode No. 162.Marilee and I talked growing up, being a businesswoman, acknowledging adversity and flourishing in spite of it, and being an artist/creator, a connector, a dreamer, and one who manifests. We also talked a little bit about a few of her favorite albums, which were these:The Very Best of the Everly Brothers (1964)No Need to Argue (1994), The CranberriesEverclear's Sparkle and Fade (1995)All Eyez on Me (1996), Tupac ShakurPost Malone's Austin (2023)Find Marilee on Instagram at @marileerose1. Check out her IG photography page, which is @wildrose.photography.kc. Her Web site is wildrosephotography.com, and be sure to find her Air BnB link on her personal Instagram page as well, as new developments there will be happening soon.Chatting with Marilee was a blast, and my only notes correction would be that I foolishly said "Isley Brothers" when Righteous Brothers was the artist name I'd meant. Thank you to both Marilee and to everyone that supports the show.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio clips contained within this episode. **Content Warning: discussion of sexual assault and cult violence** In the last days of 2020, we got up early, brewed some coffee, and sat down (er, Zoomed) with Maya Azucena, singer-songwriter and cultural ambassador, who has been riding out the pandemic in Turkey. Maya’s inspiring, infectious -- and highly danceable -- music has taken her on a worldwide outreach journey, and we hope you enjoy coming along for the ride as much as we did. We talk about the power of personal storytelling to connect across differences, how to have a global artistic career, and what it really means to be fearless. Afterwards, you can hear Emily and Sarah discuss their respective hair journeys and then switch to the much lighter topic of the riot at the Capitol. If you feel the analysis of last Wednesday’s events has lacked certain insights, as well as fashion critique and a (hopefully mostly accurate) summary of what happened at Jonestown as it relates to the ongoing Q phenomenon (and cults in general), have we got the commentary for you. FOLLOW MAYA http://mayaazucena.com/ Featured music is “Fearless,” “You Matter” and “Prettiest” by Maya Azucena, courtesy of the artist. GUEST BIO Maya Azucena, a magnetically inspirational woman, is known for making music that uplifts the soul. Among several awards for her music and humanitarian outreach, Azucena garnered a Grammy Certificate for contributing her 4-octave range and soul-stylings to a feature performance with Stephen Marley on Best Reggae Album of the Year, “Mind Control.” Critically acclaimed, Brooklyn-native Maya is an avid independent touring artist and songwriter performing globally. Recent concerts include a 17-country tour of Europe in February 2019; Java Jazz Fest (Indonesia), CapeTown Jazz Fest (South Africa), Port Au Prince International Jazz Fest (Haiti), Rio Das Ostras Blues & Jazz Fest (Brazil), Moscow International House of Music (Russia), Pula Arena (Croatia), Delhi International Arts Festival (India), Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles), Blue Note Hawaii, Blue Note New York, and Essence Fest in New Orleans alongside the likes of Beyonce, Jill Scott and Maxwell. For the last 3 summers, Azucena has done concert residencies at Bodrum Marina Yacht Club in Turkey, as well as luxury resorts including Lujo Hotel, Regnum Carya Golf Club, and Six Sense Kaplankaya. Maya performed an exclusive concert with her Turkish orchestra, singing her original songs arranged for Çukurova State Symphony of Adana. She was also included in Istanbul’s 2017 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, performing her song “Fearless” for the finale of Çigdem Akin’s runway show. Maya collaborates extensively on stage and recordings with both national and international stars. Her collaborations have included Marcus Miller, Brass Against, Jason Miles, DJ Spinna, DJ Logic, Fitz and the Tantrums, Vernon Reid, and Bob Sinclair. Maya is well known for her humanitarian outlook and projects around The Globe which include special focus on Women’s & Youth Empowerment and Domestic/Sexual Violence. Based on a personal commitment to help the world through her talent, most of Maya’s songs are anthems that lend a voice to self-worth, empowerment, overcoming obstacles, and stepping into our “fearless” selves

Derek VanScoten is the producer, guitarist, and Emmy-winning musician behind Cloudchord. In early 2010 he hit the scene as a solo artist, merging live guitar with modern electronic production. Ears caught quickly, and within a year he was playing coast to coast for growing audiences. East Forest unpacks a recent interaction between the two artists where an email thread got wildly embarrassing - they're here to digest the episode. Based in Austin, Texas, he has been actively releasing solo material since 2009. In 2011 he released an official remix of Break Science featuring Talib Kweli, and in 2012 he was a featured guitarist and co-producer on Michal Menert's album Even If It Isn't Right. His album, Hit the Clouds Running, was released on Gravitas Recordings in 2013. He has played guitar and other instruments with groups including the Boulder Philharmonic, DJ Logic, and Devotchka, and toured with Big Gigantic, Beats Antique, Emancipator, and Lotus. “The theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of DJ LOGIC, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by crossing genres and mixing his sound across the map. As one of the world's most accomplished turntablist’s, DJ LOGIC is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip - hop realms and is considered by most as a highly respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. Since his emergence in the early nineties amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene, the New York City based deejay has been amassing a veritable mountain of collaborations ranging from the likes of: MEDESKI MARTIN AND WOOD, CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE, VERNON REID, CHARLIE HUNTER, JACK DeJOHNETTE, JOHN MAYER, BEN HARPER, MOS DEF and THE ROOTS, to name but a few. DJ LOGIC and his role as an electronic-music ambassador keeps him at the top of his game. Whether the scratch artist instructs tablas to flirt with drum 'n' bass (such as on his NINA SIMONE and BILLY HOLIDAY remixes found on Sony Legacy's Remixed and Reimagined volumes) , or while meshing free styling MC's with Afro-Cuban rhythms (such as on 'Share Worldwide Funk' - a remix produced for JACK DeJOHNETTE and Golden Beams Collected, Volume 1 ) , LOGIC can always be found paying homage to his predecessors while contributing his vision to the deejay genre. While the context of his work may vary, DJ LOGIC’S spinning skills are definitely beyond reproach. He works with a phenomenal roster of invited guests, and he knows how to pick his collaborators as well as his samples. With a growing catalogue of recordings under his belt, DJ LOGIC’S supreme musicianship and catholic tastes will allow him to journey wherever an infectious groove may take him.

Seth and Rob give a quick introduction to set the table for a collaborative interview with Mike Wilson of Voodoo Visionary and Nick MacDaniels of Big Something. Voodoo will be performing at the Big Something-hosted-and-curated Big What Festival the weekend after this episode is released. This conversation begins on common ground with a discussion of DJ Logic and Turkuaz as each band has collaborated with each of these artists. The quartet segues neatly into a discussion about selecting and working with producers and then Nick sheds light on the learning curve that goes along with throwing one's own festival and the importance of creating something special with a friendly atmosphere. Nick also opens up about losing his best friend, and one of the chief creative forces behind Big Something, Paul Interdonato....when things get a little heavy Mike steps up and talks about some of Voodoo's biggest non-musician influences. Each of them also speak about the support (and lack thereof) as well as some of their frustrations with local media in each of their markets. The musicians also share a "gig nightmare" story each, and they discuss some of their most recent material (including Nick elaborating on specific songs from their 2018 release The Otherside). Nick also reveals which verse of the brilliant "Sundown Nomad" was written by Mister, who will perform with Big Something at The Big What (Nick also waxes on some of his favorite collaborations over the years). Then we are all treated to solo versions of Big Something songs "UFO's Are Real" and "The Cave" from the 2017 release Tumbleweed delivered by the ever-gracious MacDaniels. Seth and Rob then wrap up the show with some musical world thoughts of their own, including reports about recent shows each has seen (Phish, Patti Griffin, Amanda Shires and others) and Rob's appearance on the Alpharetta version of the Osiris Phish Couch Report. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. Seth and Rob first announce their new live series “wTnS Live” at the Atlanta City Winery. They explain how they will be offering evenings of music, philanthropy and podcasting. While there is a pilot episode on August 9th, the first event is September 19th, and it features DJ Logic and this episode’s primary guest Voodoo Visionary. Before diving into the Voodoo Visionary vision, Seth and Rob take a quick call with Perpetual Groove frontman Brock Butler and find out about how the band is clicking personally and professionally better than they have in years, maybe ever. The trio discuss some upcoming Perpetual Groove gigs and some of their history - and these three will sit down again next month in Atlanta for a more detailed conversation for use in a future Perpetual Groove-centric episode. Then the hosts sit down with Turner’s favorite young Atlanta touring band, Voodoo Visionary. The band relates their unusual beginnings - rising from the world of rugby, playing all-improv gigs in non-traditional music venues, having a singer slam in what the other band members would later learn was his first live performance, finding their horn section in the most organic way possible, and more. Voodoo has a large following in Atlanta, but we get into some of the mechanisms and planning involved in turning the corner to become a national act. Their latest cd “Off The Ground,” is discussed extensively. The interview is conducted at WonderDog Sound Studios in Marietta, Georgia - where this great new release was recorded. The band discusses why they chose WonderDog and some of the unique benefits of that studio. The episode ends with a discussion with the studio’s owner Mark Michaelson and long-time engineer Josh Thane. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds (wonderdogsounds.com) Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

And this is the stand out track of the ol' cast. buy2) The Field - Fall From A Height (Remix)Tied and Tickled Trio - Aelita 1The much ballyhooed Swedes in rough mix with the post jazz of the trio.3) B.C. Camplight - Soy Tonto!A masterful piece of eclecticity by a man I can really identify with.buy4) Lisa Portelli - A Mon MeubleI don't know French but I know what I like.5 ) Chromeo - Fancy FootworkThe best electro-pop funk educated 2 step duo since the 80's. 6) Vampire Weekend - Oxford CommaAnd their back for a second track. Less Paul Simon more lerft field.7) The Magnetic Fields - Three-WayThe opening track on their new album is this stellar piece of heavy drenched erotic propulsuion. buy8) Enon - Mirror on You  (site not epileptic safe) Need more noise and this time with lyrics? Another opening track.buy9) The Shermans - DumbheadLet's bring it down with this jangle pop series of insults.10) David Vandervelde - Nothin’ NoAnd let's bring in the fuzz with some psychedelic retrospective on the pressing interests of love.11) The Whitsundays - Sorry JamesLet us know put that to the task of age.12) Dr. Dog - Ain’t It StrangeTo close this set let's get a bit of Beatles-esque revival. Oh that is nice - a balm on the frazzled soul it is. 13) Tunng - BulletsIs it a narrative, a survivalist trope on the dangers of forgetting and trying? A rumination on loss and life? A spectacular folksie sing along? yes14) Steve Dawson - Fun Machine OneGet up and jig now. An open plain and ample night clothe this track and bring the guitar a quality of lyrical fire. 15) Miss Li - I’m Sorry, He’s Mine"And it started like love should. I tole him from my best friend." Doesn't get any straighter than that.16) Patrick and Eugene - Postcard From SummerisleOh that is nice piece of weird right there. Electronica can't do no wrong.17) Midnight Juggernauts - Dragonette's I Get Around (Remix) A solid bass bin kick is elemental to any good groove. The vocal samples with additional reworking takes the head bop and hand dance into pure pop infection territory.18) DJ Logic feat. Miri Ben-AriA very ambient track of Logic working with the instrumental hip hop violinist Ben-Ari. 19) Mandragora - La Cumparsita (Tango Christ Superstar)A re-working (orgaicmash-up, jazz riff, etc) of the Cumparsita with Jesus Christ Superstar's bassline. Encore!20) Hungry Marching Band - Gde Si BreThis lively outfit just did a show that I missed. My greatest regret of the year so far. Coincidentally how cool is the album name: "Portable Soundtracks for Temporary Utopias"? 21) Lou Reed - Perfect DayMr. Reed just keeps getting better and by the gods of if this track hasn't aged half as well as the rest than the geometrical growth of goodness shall soon outstrip the entire catalog of crooning whelps of the present day. Saccharine pop bullshit and all.22) Kerkko Koskinen - Sparkling ArsenicA whirlwind orchestral set of the ex-Ultra Bra-ist with the Umo Jazz Orchestra. Sounds like Yoko Kanno with a spy movie OST.23) Mariee Sioux - Wizard Flurry HomeHaunting and hurt - chills all around. But the warm instrumentation and rhythmic lyricism saves it from being a melancholic dirge or sap fest all to common in these tropes.24) Mekons - Dickie, Chalky and Nobbyoh I needed this.25) George Bush - ImagineDon't forget to register to vote people.26) Grails - Silk rdAnd this PDX track to give me a little room to breath before I go claustrophobic shit for brains insane on the closed in breathing that I feel when I think of the next 366 days.27) Emir Kusturica & No Smoking Orchestra - Who killed the D.J.Alas the song is too solid for the fog of memory to be contained in only by the original release and has spawned from the first the denizens of strange continents interjoined by oddity and inspiration.28) MC5 - Kick out the JamsJust what I needed to get the old blood sloshing around these old collapsed and bruised tubes to half aspirated ventricles and world weary capillaries. Join me now for the head long rush into what is bound to be a spectacular year.image from:Dick TracyBacking tracks:Band Of Horses - Is there a ghostBe Mine (Ocelot Mthrfckrs Remix)Pratique - Death for Blushing Roguemini mix nineDigitalism  - Idealism Xiu Xiu - I Do What I Want When I WantBlur - Country House

The colorful drummer, composer, and arranger switches styles as easily as he changes crop-tops. His two new albums under the Context Killer and Diamond Kinkade monikers add live-looping avant funk and ambient piano and synth soundscapes to the straight-ahead jazz and funk he's been known for. Simon has always liked to stretch the boundaries of musical forms and identity. If things get kinky, that's fine with him. After his visit with the Troubled Men, he should feel more emboldened than ever. Topics include weight gain, letting go, the inauguration, a Lil Wayne pardon, DNA evidence, Jen Psaki, an inoculation monologue, new music, a chronofile, a close call, high school, Bobby Campo, Frank Williams, a first record, the drums, Johnny Vidacovich, a symphonic family, David Torkanowsky, George Porter, John Bonham, musical nutrients, critical thinking, ego, Lyrics Born, DJ Logic, Nels Cline, favorite countries, a Joan Rivers haunting, Sandra Bernhard, perception, a noise set, Eno, Phil Spector, and much more.
