This week on the show, the great Yuka Honda. She's a New York musician. In the 1990s, she emerged from the fertile New York music underground with Cibo Matto alongside groups like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and Luscious Jackson. She's collaborated with an extensive roster of musicians, including John Zorn,David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon, and her husband, guitarist Nels Cline. Earlier this year, we taped the conversation you're about to hear. Some of it ran as text in the Across the Horizon zine that was available at Big Ears Music Fest. What is Across the Horizon? Well, it's a collaborative series from Bob Holmes of Suss and Northern Spy Records gathering together like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations on August 13th. Under her Eucademix banner, Yuka has explored experimental electronics via two semi recent Farm Psychedelia EPs and her Across The Horizon contribution “A Long Slow Blink Before The Answer.” In this conversation, we get into food, art, language, and much more. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. For decades, Nels Cline carved out a career on the fringes of rock, jazz, and experimental music, balancing day jobs with an uncompromising artistic vision. Then, at nearly 50 years old, everything changed—he joined Wilco, bringing his avant-garde sensibilities into a beloved band and reaching a global audience. But Cline's story isn't one of sudden success; it's about persistence, reinvention, and creative restlessness. In this episode, he reflects on his journey—from growing up in Los Angeles with his twin brother, drummer Alex Cline, to navigating the punk and avant-garde jazz scenes, to his latest album, Consentrik Quartet (Blue Note Records), which explores the tension between stillness and chaos, structure and improvisation. Cline speaks candidly about collaboration, musical identity, and the ever-evolving nature of his work, proving that there's no single timeline for artistic success—only the drive to keep going. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story
"House Of Steam" Putting it simply the L.A.-born Nels Cline's resume' is so deep, to quote Mark Eitzel, it "would make the ocean proud." The guitarist and composer is one of the most respected names in the business and though he's perhaps best known these days for being the guitarist of Wilco, let's not single story Mr. Cline, because his body of work is varied and extensive. Aside from his early jazz work with his twin brother Alex, he's played with everyone from the Geraldine Fibbers to Mike Watt to Thurston Moore. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. Cline has played on close to 200 albums in jazz, pop, rock, country, and experimental music. Let me give you a few of those 200 to play with: Yoko Ono, Henry Kaiser, Firehose, Wayne Kramer, Rickie Lee Jones, John Zorn, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Neil Finn, Lee Ranaldo and Chris Stamey. And belive me when I tell you that's a heavily expurgated list. Over the years Cline has been in bands with his pal Mike Watt Floored By Four, band with his wife Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto and he's had the Nels Cline Singers, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline 4. Now comes The Consentrik Quartet, which is Cline along with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chirs Lightcap and drummer Tom Rainey. Improvisational, experimental and downright wonderful, the band's debut album is a profound blend of rich cycle grooves, unexpected rhythmic excursions, and subtle meter innovations. It's marvelous work. Filled with delicate percussive brushes, virtuoso sax fills, prowling bass lines idiosyncratic sax melodies and Cline's nimble guitar lines moving through each composition with dextrous finesse, it's hard to think of a richer listening experience in recent memory. It's hard to think of a nicer guy as well--Nels is a lovely fellow and now you get to meet him. www.nelscline.com (http://www.nelscline.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG & Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
HAPPY NEW YEAR, CREEK TALKERS!!
PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement. While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave. Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK. Business was good, and it grew. A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known. The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era. After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen. It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers. Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer. Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded. And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal. Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album: PULSARS's Info Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter: https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/
The trailblazing artist, electronics instrumentalist, composer, and producer Yuka C Honda, has made a career of making music that doesn't necessarily subscribe to rules and genres. Widely known for her band Cibo Matto, Yuka's career now spans over three decades. Carmel Holt sat down with Yuka at Wilco's Solid Sound festival in June to discuss her journey thus far, and her brand new EP under her moniker eucademix, Farm Psychedelia, released just before performing at Solid Sound.

TIMO ELLIS is a musician, composer, and producer. He lives and works in New York City, where he was born and raised. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Ellis has appeared on almost 100 albums in total over the past twenty years. He has recorded and toured with such artists as Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Cibo Matto, Joan As Police Woman, and Spacehog, and has variously performed and collaborated with Mark Ronson, John Zorn, The Melvins, Ween, The Lemonheads, Money Mark, and Gibby Haynes. Traversing the realms of rock, punk, metal, soul, lo-fi, folk/ country, electronics, and beyond, Ellis' diverse music is unified by a few constants: impeccable songcraft, blazing technique, quirky experimentalism, and sheer intensity. His solo works have been described with phrases like “an absolute, burning blur of a song” (CMJ), “overridden-in-the-red propulsion” (Noisey), and “gritty, high energy… rambunctious” (BrooklynVegan).

Buffy is back, with a bad attitude, but fantastic hair. When She Was Bad, the season 2 opener, sets us up for a new school year in Sunnydale. The siren call of Cibo Matto proves too strong for Buffy and Xander, who leave no room for Jesus in their steamy dance, while a vampire resurrection ritual reminds us of the non-pharmaceutical ways we used to get high as tweens...
Our show’s music composer, and member of Chicago bands, Percolator and Rubber Spaniel, Phil Bertulfo, returns to the podcast to talk about the soundtrack to the 1996 film Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. Phils talks about how he discovered Kids in the Hall in the pre-internet era and how excited he was for the movie and the accompanying Matador Records soundtrack. We talk about Pavement, Cibo Matto, Matthew Sweet, Stereolab and They Might be Giants, and some of the Canadian indie-rock bands (The Odds, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, The Tragically Hip) featured on the soundtrack. We dive into the history of the Kids, how the movie caused a lot of tension within the troupe and how they’ve had a knack for connecting with rock bands. We pepper in stories about being fans of the troupe in our teen years and the Kids in the Hall connection to Lorne Michaels and his other sketch comedy show.
In this week's episode, Coop & Dylan take a big bite of that Sharon Apple with Episodes 1 and 2 of Macross Plus. This week is mostly about my feelings on Ghost of... Tsushima, followed by George ranting about Lunar 2 and MS Saga. It's a JRPG about, uhhh... Hold on, let me look at the card. Gun Damns? Gun-- Gundums. Gun... What the hell is this. Who cares. Theme song by David Cassel Outro music: "MFN" by Cibo Matto

He produces a stellar season of inspiring talks and cultural immersions at Pure Land Farms, the Center for Tibetan Medicine situated in the beautiful canyon of Topanga, California. OK, but WHY talk to Simone? Aside from having a soothing voice and a beautiful selection of work which we will be sampling underneath the conversation, I wanted to get a sense of how he keeps his career vital, always moving forward. He and I are the same age and I've done a bit of travel myself. I know how hard it is. But Simone has a way of landing in new places: concert halls and studios all over europe, Asia, New York, LA... and he somehow makes himself at home. We get into a lot of that and more, so THANKS to Simone for opening up his mind and his space with us. I hope you get as much out of it as I did. You can find him on social at "simone giuliani" with two underscores at either end. This episode's guest, Timo Ellis, is an all around musical powerhouse. He plays drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, and sings, and currently fronts the synth-metal band Netherlands. His musical bio spans an impressive and varied list of projects including Yoko Ono, Cibo Matto, Sean Lennon, Joan as Policewoman, and many more. We talked about the "sinister, earth-killing, imperialist, genocidal juggernaut" that is our current political system, made plans for a two-person revolution, and scrapped those plans because we're all addicted to the internet. It's a wild ride. Check it out, it even features some unreleased tracks you won't hear anywhere else. Sponsor: Russia. Opening music: "Merchandise" by Fugazi, performed by Pierre de Gaillande with James Fletcher, drums. Songs: "Breakin' the Law" by Judas Priest, and "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, all instruments by Timo Ellis. "I just Want My Space" by The Carbs. "Warzone" and "How Do You Feel" (unreleased demos) by Yoko Ono. "Beauty Funk" (unreleased demo) by Sean Lennon and Timo Ellis. "Sunday" (live performance) by Cibo Matto. "Keeper of the Flame" (live performance) by Joan as Policewoman. "It's the Rage" by Butter 08. "Negative Likes" by Netherlands. "Winterfell" by Biker Period. "Serf's Up," "Bracchios R' Us," and "No Revenge" by Timo Ellis. timoellis.comnetherlandsband.com shameparty.tv
Emcee, Andie, David and our new co-hosts Jan and Logan dive into Season Two and talk about the moment between Xander and Willow, Cordelia's ability to tell it as it is and Cibo Matto being great clog dancers.
Dearest Radio Ulnites, Apparently February wass the month to release the maddest notes because all these fools came out with guns a-blazin'. I'm not the biggest fan of Xiu Xiu (re: "A Promise" album cover malarkey), but his track was one of the more savage things I've heard in quite a while and I can appreciate these things. Deal with it. Also, a new band on my radar is Cibo Matto, a couple of Japanese dames that can crank out some weird, synth-pop, dancy tunes. Encourage checking them out. Anyway, "new" Phantogram, Sun Kil Moon, St. Vincent -- NEW EVERYTHING! Yup. Thanks for listening, A.B. Radio Ulna Mix 15 - More Original Than Our Own St. Vincent - Bring Me Your Loves (0:00 - 3:11) Cibo Matto - Deja Vu (3:12 - 7:23) Phantogram - Fall In Love (7:24 - 10:50) Xiu Xiu - Stupid In The Dark (10:51 - 13:36) The Casket Girl - Same Side (13:37 - 17:40) Chad VanGaalen - Where Are You (17:41 - 22:38) Yellow Ostrich - You Are The Stars (22:39 - 26:08) Cloud Nothings - I'm Not Part Of Me (26:09 - 30:38) JPNSGRLS - Mushrooms (30:39 - 34:00) Stonefox - All I Want (34:01 - 37:55) The Hidden Cameras - Year Of The Spawn (37:56 - 42:37) Damien Jurado - Silver Timothy (42:38 - 45:51) Sun Kil Moon - Ben's My Friend (45:52 - 51:00) All music purchased legally through iTunes and Amazon.com, and protected under fair use and its application to podcasts.
Ben Perowsky's newest recording, Moodswing Orchestra (El Destructo, 2009), is an experiment is ambient improvisation. Perowsky has assembled an all-star cast of instrumentalists and vocalists, including everyone from Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori and Brazilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto to turntable/laptop artist Markus Miller and tuba player Marcus Rojas. In this interview, Perowsky talks about his desire to embrace the spirit of jazz but avoid "jazz language"; and how the process of the recording was as much about improvisation as was the content. Learn more at perowsky.com and see the band live on Nov. 9 at 10 p.m. at the Nublu Jazz Festival.
