FROM DJ SPINNA PODCASTS: Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) The whole world knows that I'm a huge Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince buff. But the other beast of a soul artist that I love to death is Marvin Gaye, of course! His music deeply expresses the soul of a man. The most bewildering thing about Marvin that I've come to understand more in my adult years is how he was able express his life experiences so artistically despite all his traumatic upheaval. I mean, his pops was a cross dressing preacher that practically despised his own son. I'll never forget the day I found out his dad took him out, the day before his birthday! I couldn't understand it and I was sad as hell. But life is wild that way. All that pain he endured led to greatness. Check these two youtube clips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUfsI9jJr_I&feature=related (Tom Joyner interview) The most honest interview I think I've ever seen an artist do while they're STILL dealing with their issues, not after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ9FViYsDQA His dad was illmatic! And a suggested read... Divided Soul: The Life Of Marvin Gaye by David Ritz (who actually co wrote Sexual Healing) This book will change your life and have you paying more attention to Marvin's lyrics. I guarantee it! I grew up with his music like so many so I thought it was only right to bless the world with a mix. Included here here in this first episode are some rare releases, B-sides, alternate versions, exclusive re-edits and remixes courtesy of myself and some legendary dj/producer friends. More Marvin heat to come shortly... Enjoy BLOG POST https://soulofsydney.org/2011/04/03/marvin/

In this episode:Listen to a conversation between your host Vivienne Aerts and Amsterdam based saxophone player, DJ and producer Susanne Alt, as they discuss the recording of her New York album 'Royalty for Real' and her work as board member of several Jazz associations About Susanne Alt Susanne Alt is a saxophone player, dj and producer, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She has been leading her own jazz band and playing alongside dj's since 1999. In 2015, Alt was asked by a booker if she's also dj'ing and as a joke she said "yes". To her dismay she discovered that this answer had consequences, she just got her first booking as a dj! Quickly she had to catch up and prepare a set.One thing lead to another, her soulful deep and funky sound immediately got picked up within the Amsterdam nightlife. Performing live sets as a unique saxophonist-dj lead to an unexpected expansion of Alt's career and also her dj-only sets (without sax) are in high demand. Developing these new skills also lead to her new band "Venus Tunes Live", an all-female dj/live act: One vocalist, one percussionist and one saxophonist, all dj'ing and performing originals in the mix with other hot tracks. As a saxophone player deeply rooted in jazz, funk and soul, Alt is embracing the multiple musical possibilities of a dj/producer, stretching out into electronic music, especially everything that's soulful, funky and deep.In 1978, Alt is born in Würzburg, Germany. Both parents are musicians and music teachers. At the age of 18, after classical saxophone studies at Meistersinger-Konservatorium Nuremberg (1993-1996) and winning a Siemens young talent talent prize (1996), she leaves Germany to study jazz saxophone in the Netherlands at Hilversums Conservatorium/Conservatorium van Amsterdam (1996-2000). She continues her studies at Universität der Künste Berlin (2000-2003) and graduates cum laude. In 2004 she debutes as a producer with her 2004 release Nocturne on her own record label Venus Tunes. Releases include several jazz albums and funk album Saxify (2016) which she describes as her masterpiece up to now. Throughout 2016-2018 dance remixes of Saxify are released, ready to be played by Venus Tunes Live and as a dj. Since 2018, Alt has been focusing on her label, producing, her monthly guest mix on radio Freak31 and continuing to perform live as dj and saxophonist. Collaborations, live and in the studio, include Fred Wesley, DJ Spinna, Opolopo, Johan S, Hardsoul, DJ Maestro, Wicked Jazz Sounds and many more. Instagram / Facebook / YouTube About ViviTalks - Interviews with the Women Behind Typuhthâng.Introducing ViviTalks, a podcast hosted by Dutch New York-based musician Vivienne Aerts. DJ Spinna is an anomaly. As a world-renowned DJ, producer, remixer, label head, promoter, curator, and influencer-- Spinna has crafted his artistic vision since the 1990s. His musical spectrum spans all flavors-- from Hip-Hop [as founding member of The Jigmastas], to Soul and R&B [authoring remixes for Stevie Wonder and Mary J. Blige] to Jazz and Funk [reviving productions from Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Betty Carter, Al Jarreau, Eddie Kendricks] to Electronic/Dance and Soulful House [transforming Shaun Escoffery's “Days Like This” into a worldwide dance floor anthem]. His prolific studio work led to his 2002 cult-classic LP, Here To There, released on the iconic BBE label. DJ Spinna is synonymous with ground-breaking, annual tribute events. Since 2001, “WONDER-Full” has celebrated the Guest of Honor, Stevie Wonder. “Soul Slam,” 20-years strong, is the authoritative Michael Jackson vs. Prince party. At Spike Lee's “BK Loves MJ,” DJ Spinna commemorates Michael Jackson's birthday in Brooklyn. In 2001, Motown tapped DJ Spinna for a brilliant remix of Michael Jackson's “We're Almost There.” DJ Spinna's collaborations with Stevie Wonder include remixes for “My Love Is On Fire"  and “Sweetest Somebody.” In October 2012, Spinna performed an opening DJ set for Stevie Wonder's United Nations Peace Concert.  Spinna has blessed global dance floors across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the United States. Every week on Apple Music Hits, DJ Spinna's “Here To There Radio” features two hours of themed selections that showcase his versatile expertise and massive vinyl collection. On Twitch, he has amassed 20,000 followers spinning live, marathon sets and interacting with his chatroom on two weekly shows, DJ Spinna Presents Journey and Galactic Quiet Storm.  DJ Spinna is undoubtedly the master of all genres with over 1200 music credits. Whether spinning the classics or releasing new music, DJ Spinna's passion, professionalism, prowess, and pure vibes are felt with every note.  In this conversation DJ Spinna talks about his history, his early confirmation of him being in music, his first club experience, as well as his view on traditions when it comes to DJing and the advice he has for newer up-and-coming DJs. www.djspinna.com Recorded in Long Island City, Queens on September 13, 2023. Breaking Atoms: The Hip Hop Podcast

Bucket list alert! We FINALLY got to speak with the legendary DJ Spinna! Look, fam. People keep throwing around the word underrated all willy-nilly, but this man is a God-level producer who is before his time, of his time and ahead of his time. We chatted about his early life in Brooklyn, becoming a DJ, transitioning into production, the 90s indie Hip Hop scene, working with J-Live and got into some early Jigmastas history. We even talked about the Basement Khemists, so yeah, this is one of those. At the end, we went into full-blown geek mode and talked about some of his classic songs, rare joints and remixes for De La Soul, Big Kwam, Masta Ace, Sadat X, Edo G and more.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Peace family.  Man, don't you just hate it when things just go awry?  Well, we tried to make it all go the previous week, only to have the whole broadcast have to be scrapped due to technical issues beyond our control.  We had a power surge hit us; it knocked some things off-balance, and we couldn't recover for the rest of the show, hence the shutting down of the whole broadcast mid-show.  With that said, we're ever thankful for the opportunity to get a redo. We charge it all to experience. With that said, onward with the show.  In this episode, we get it in with the great DJ Spinna's remix of a Roberta Flack classic, new music from Gene Moore Jr. and India Arie, a great new slow jam from newcomer Chris Walton, plus classics from The Commodores, James Ingram, Lillo Thomas, Bill Summers & Summers' Heat, and the list goes on and on.  We thank you all for the love you've shown us over the years.  If you have a request, by all means, drop us a line at greatsoulradio@gmail.com.  Thanks as always for tuning in, and remember--- tell a friend, to tell a friend, to tell a friend, to tell a friend, all about The Throwback Lounge. Oliver Johnson aka Dorian Concept will release his new album What We Do For Others on 28th October on Brainfeeder Records. It's the third studio album by the Austrian producer and synthesizer savant, famed for his singular, beautifully detailed sonic tapestries and wild, utterly joyful live keyboard jam videos. What We Do For Others is a relaxed, quietly confident and intimate record, founded on delightfully loose arrangements, feedbacked soundscapes and blessed with snatches of cryptic vocals that are presented more as additional instrumentation rather than lyrical phrases. All the elements and layers were recorded without interruptions and deliberately not edited. “I think that's why this record has something of a ‘band sound'” says Oliver. “It's me playing all kinds of different key- instruments, singing and using fx-units to create these freeform compositions.” The title came to Oliver in a dream and stuck with him. “One thing I often find interesting about my creative process is that when I believe to be making something that others could like, it tends to not really connect with people,” he says. “Whereas when I get to that special place and just work from my gut – the music tends to often speak to the outside world naturally.” Johnson says that he tried questioning his internal voice of self-judgment and temper his constant urge for improvement during the making of the album. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Dorian's earliest memories of being introduced to music through film soundtracks such as Batman Returns (1992) Sound synthesis The earliest influences on Dorian Dorian being influenced by Dj Spinna's “Heavy Beats Vol. 2” in his youth Experimenting and improvising with Micro Korgs Dorian learning how to play the piano around the age of 6 Prepared piano The importance of having teachers that can nurture one's individual creativity Connections between music and video games 8 to 16-bit music used in early console games Psychedelics Set and setting Questioning one's perspective on using time The intentionality of decisions made throughout one's life The compulsion for creating art Dorian's reasons for choosing to become a professional artist His new album “What We Do For Others” His track, Survival Instinct being the “heartpiece” of his album Drawing parallels between creating a sculpture and creating music Presenting complex points of view to a wider audience Commercialization vs. arthouse creations Breaking rules and questioning the process Paradigm shifts in one's own unique consciousness Dorian creating lo-fi music videos for himself with the use of archival footage and processed through Blender Artists Mentioned: Dimlite (Musician) Mike Slott (Musician) Tupac (Rapper) DJ Spinna (DJ) John Coletrain (Saxophonist) Edgard Varès (Composer) Aphex Twin (Musician) Little Snake (Musician) artistdecoded.com dorianconcept.com

Enjoy this week's episode of Redolence Radio hosted by DJ INO, one of the Spanish DJs and producers who has most defended the Deep House sound since the mid-90s. His career began in Spain in 1995 with impeccable work directing different clubs such as Telefunken, House Café... Two clubs that were key at the beginning of his career. As a producer, he released his music on labels such as Seven Villas Music, Be Adult Music, KMT Records, Republic Music NYC, House Cafe Music, Objektivity, Open Bar Music, Muna Musik, Café Del Mar Music, Nordic Trax or Seasons Recordings among many others.
